Topic: A Christmas Commission

Tyler had breezed back into town, eager to have a painting done, and rather quickly. Christmas was but a week away and with what he had planned for Andre; time was short. In Rhydin there was magic and he laid all of his eggs in that basket. Maybe, just maybe, the artist that he offered the commission to could have it ready by Christmas morning. It was a long shot, but he remained hopeful.

The Market was full of the usual vendors, their booths and carts decked out the the festive holiday spirit. Tyler asked these vendors who was the best painter in Rhydin. The answers varied slightly, and one name kept being repeated more than the others: Oliver Granger.

So, with the tally in check and an envelope in his hand, Tyler followed the directions to the small studio that displayed the work of the artist and his sister. When Tyler arrived, nobody seemed to be there. This dimmed his hopes, but only slightly. He left the envelope, with a note attached.

Mr. Granger,

I know that I am not giving you much time, and for this I do apologize. Please find the photograph and five hundred gold within the envelope attached. As closely as possible, please recreate the photo: oil on canvas. I will come calling again, with the remainder of the gold you require to finish the painting and frame it.

This is a Christmas gift of highest importance to me. Please accept this commission, I plead of you.

Sincerely,

Tyler Redfield

Tyler left contact information at the bottom of the letter. His name, cell phone number and address were all listed. And as he walked away from the studio with that envelope slid under the door, he smiled.

Ollie was very late in returning the commissioned painting to Mr Redfield. He felt horrible for his tardiness, but he had a very good excuse. Being a newly-wed as well as a new father with a very unusual child were reasons enough to get anyone out of the dog house...especially when one considered the fact that he was the one who took care of Her Highness whilst Piper was getting her much needed rest at night, as well as painting and attending to other familial duties during the day. His nightly ration of sleep had been halved, but when he watched Piper with Lyneth, he knew that his state of perpetual sleep deprivation was worth it.

The painting was finished at last, and since it was so late, he only took half the commission, leaving the other 250 in a sealed pouch with the painting at Vanima Gallery, under the care and keeping of his agent, Fallon Quinn. In addition to the money, there was a brief note in the pouch.

Mr Redfield-

My humblest apologies for the tardiness in the delivery of this painting. I'm sure you understand how crazy the holidays can be, and with the addition of a brand-new wife and our brand-new baby, this Christmas was even crazier than normal.

Since I could not deliver the painting until well after your deadline, please accept the work at a discount. I have kept only half of the 500 coins you sent and will take no more, unless it is on a new commission.

Happy belated holidays to you, sir, and I hope this work is acceptable.

Sincerely,

OH Granger III
