The moon outside his window had not changed, it would wax and wane every month like always, surely the tides would rise and fall, the sun rise and set as ever it had. No, nothing in the world he knew had changed except for his vision of himself in it.

The rum bottle that sat upon the tiny table beside his single bed was now nearly empty. His cheeks and his eyes burnt from the hours he had spent in silent tears. Reaching over to find a old worn out, dirty sock he blew his nose into it. The final bit of rum was disposed of, warming his throat and belly so that he could compose himself.

For months his strength, his will to rise yet again had been slipping away slowly. All of the mistakes, the poor choices in judgements that had led him to this point weighing him down like a sea anchor so that he could only tread water, yet make no movement of his own design save to be blown and cast about by powers other than his own. The decline had picked up steam over the past few weeks to the point that he wondered if he would even have the strength to get up and dress himself for one last walk down the docks.

The docks were quiet now save for the dull echoing of his own booted footsteps over them. He passed the slips were The Pride and Fury, and The Fallen Angel were moored, but he gave them not even a passing glance.

There was no grand ceremony, no words that he reflected on as he slipped the pistol from his belt and pressed it to his temple. There was no pause to reflect upon his family...There was only the final relaxed breaths of a man ready to end his own torment.

A single shot ringing out in the night down at the docks did not even warrant a second glance from the watch, or any who might still be about thier business in this section of town.

And that was that. The end of Robert Kidd, in a way so quiet none might even notice, save for the note he left for his brother.

Dearest Stephen,

I will be leaving now. Do not frown upon my chosen fate, for these were my demons and never yours to battle. You could not have done anymore to save me than you have already done. Light a candle if you must, but watch it fondly with the memory of how I loved you.

With all my love Robert
