By definition, government has no conscience.

Albert Camus said that, and given the staggering displays of atrocities and apathy all around the multiverse, it is becoming more and more self-evident. Set aside the fact that RhyDin itself has its own share of problems with democracy. Any fool with a pen can criticize a governing body. But can that fool also lay his pen into the gashes on his feet' Can he present some proof of rehabilative effort' When a "long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object evinces a design to reduce under absolute despotism," is it not their right to throw off such government'

The K"neah have every inherent right to. Or at least what is left of them.

The K"neah, as they are known to RhyDin today, are native to a fruitful planet a few warp jumps away from RhyDin. Unfortunately, that planet no longer exists. Where there was once a thriving home bursting with life, there is naught but a lifeless asteroid belt.

What cataclysmic event triggered such a tragic loss" A loss that cost the K"neah over half the planet's population, and forced the inhabitants into a nomadic life on space flagships" No cataclysm, unfortunately, but murder, death, and corruption by their own hand.

According to Krajiinkt Vakntah, a conciliatory mediator between RhyDin and K"neahn derelicts, the destruction of their home planet and extermination of its citizens can be attributed to what the native K"neah call the "Zorheg." The Zorheg share much in common with the K"neah: habits, former home, and DNA.

Zorheg, according to Vakntah, were originally ostracized criminals. Early forms of punishment in K"neahn government included the exile of said criminals to a remote planet infested with treacherous forms of life. A circuitous method of capital punishment, if ever there was one.

Was it not Sir Thomas More who said, "You first make criminals, and then punish them?"

It is little surprise that the Zorheg found each other, and poor judgment on the part of the K"neahn government.

Vakntah would have you believe that the Zorheg are the enemy. And while this may or may not be true, I ask you this: Which is the bigger criminal" The murderer, or the murderer who condemns the murderer to death"

That aside, the attack on the K"neahn homefront occurred almost fifteen years ago. So what have the survivors been doing until then" Creating a base elsewhere" Establishing a new colony to ensure the survival of their race"

Judging by the fact that the survivors are still in orbit on those same ships from whence they fled destruction, likely none of the above.

According to Vakntah, the governing "council" aboard those flagships is hesitant to establish a colony on RhyDin because this will mean the end of K"neahn aristocratic rule. Meanwhile, supplies are almost out aboard these ships. Food and water is scarce, and survivors have been forced to salvage spare pieces of scrap metal to create homes and perform repairs within the huge shuttles.

And the situation has been thus for over three months above RhyDin now. No conscience, indeed.

"Some are isolationists, they've seen the crime that takes place in the city and seek to keep us safe from it. Others are aware that the sooner we intertwine with the society here, the safer we will be," Vakntah said.

While Council members are content to sit around and twiddle their thumbs coming up with a decision on settlement in RhyDin, their people are starving. One thing is for certain, though. If the K"neah expect to make it to next winter, they will need the help of RhyDin.

"The Council doesn't expect help with no promise of return," Vakntah said. "We have currency, though it is different from your own, we have art, and we have technology that compares with what we've seen in the Stars End sector."

Commerce between the K"neah and RhyDin folk is stagnant at best, due to the intense distrust on both sides. Until a proper settlement is established, RhyDin vendors hesitate to sell. And until the K"neah learn to trust RhyDin, it is unlikely a settlement will be established - if they can even make it that long.

What is left to be done, then, until RhyDin finds itself a home to a new people" While the K"neah do not claim to be looking for handouts, donations are most certainly welcome. K"neah diet is not unlike a human one - small portions of beef, of grains, and of fresh fruits and vegetables are tolerable. Repair supplies are needed as well for the fleet itself.

This policy, however, this is only a stopgap. While supplies are needed, what is more crucial to the K"neah is a reality check. Unless something is done about a permanent colony, and soon, the K"neah will be nothing more than a page in a history book.

Take a lesson from a few Terrans, and set your resolve, K"neah. If the government no longer serves the people, it no longer serves a purpose.
