They say the sense of smell can be extraordinarily evocative - bringing back pictures as sharp as photographs of scenes that had left the conscious mind. Not many can remember exactly what their homes looked like as a child, but strangely enough, a multitude of people can describe the scent of it.

"My grandmother's kitchen always smelled like fresh brewed tea. She drank it so often" Now whenever I get a whiff of tealeaves or tea itself, I become just' oddly content. Almost euphoric," claims Wendy Carriek, a literature teacher at West RhyDin Elementary School.

It's stories like these that provide the unique basis for product design at the Heart Notes Parfumerie in the New Haven District of RhyDin.

Elessaria Devabriel, owner and parfumeuse extraordinarie, takes pride in her personal approach to customer care.

"What makes Heart Notes different than most other shops is that I custom craft signature fragrances for my clientele. If I do develop one, then that scent is a unique blend and will never be duplicated for anyone else," Devabriel said.

But if humanoids can detect thousands of different odors, and canine and reptilian species upwards of ten thousand, exactly how can that number be reduced to a mere handful"

"In our meetings, and it could take several depending on how well I know the person, I would ask thee about what smells dost thou like," explains Devabriel. "What flowers dost thou like" Or what is thy favorite scent memory' A person's mood is also important when developing their signature fragrance. I like to know what sort of emotions or moods thou wouldest like to evoke when thou wouldest wear it."

According to Devabriel, a signature scent is comprised of three "notes," or three stages that a fragrance goes through after application. The pungency or concentration of each note depends solely on the client. What happens if a client is more enthusiastic about out-of-the ordinary scents"

"I try to educate my clients and guide them to a fragrance that will smell appealing both to them and on them," Devabriel says. "For example if oil smell thou didst prefer was more camphorous.....I might lean towards a fragrance dominated by woody scents....rendolant of the resin of trees. If thou dost like fish, then thou wouldest most likely not be adverse to notes of amber gris."

The available number of scents runs the gamut from common to highly unconventional.

"Almost anything can be used....flowers, herbs, minerals....sometimes a plant can give different forms of related smells?" claims Devabriel. "Some perfumers will like the sharpness of a vinyl accord right off the bat. A synthetic smell is pretty exotic?"

With unique scent derivatives like vinyl and tobacco and a hands-on, personal approach, it is no wonder that Devabriel has an ever-growing clientele. On a weekly basis, the Heart Notes Parfumerie serves roughly six to eight clients desiring a custom fragrance; over fifty seek out the shop for general fragrances. And that number has been growing since its open in February 2009. The satisfied word is traveling, and the influx of customers is on the upswing. So how are the books doing"

"I would have an easier time explaining the taxonomy of olfactory senses than I would be able to quote thee figures," claims Devabriel.

Here's hoping she has a good accountant, at least. But one can hardly fault an artist for technical details - especially one who is so thoroughly passionate about what she does.

"I decided I would be much happier if I did something I like for work. Hence the name Heart Notes hath not just the literal meaning behind it."

Confucius said, "Wherever you go, go with all your heart." Devabriel certainly sets the bar, and RhyDin would do well to follow her example. Friends describe her as one to always stop and smell the roses.

Or, in this case, freesia.
