Get'cher Irish On! The RhyDin Post Pub Crawl! March 17, 2011

Top o"the afternoon to ya!

Here's to hoping that by the time you read this you'll have realized it is Saint Patrick's Day. Otherwise, chances are by now you're a pincushion. You can't say you didn't have fair warning. Every other RhyDinian no doubt looks forward to this day as yet another excuse to drink heavily on a weeknight.

What's that' You feel like getting your Irish on, but don't quite know where to begin"

Rest assured, RhyDin! In honor of the Terran holiday, a handful of folks here at the RhyDin Post have been doing some professional drinking for you lately in order to put together a fabulous list of places to party for St. Patty's. Moreover, we've lined up a fun Pub Crawl for you to participate in that starts early in the evening and ends at none other than the Red Dragon Inn, just in time for Risa's shift.

But wait! There's more!

At each of the following locations, the Post will have different drink coasters available and contest entry forms. If you collect every coaster and mail it in, you will have a chance to win a trip to Earth to see the REAL Ireland! Hotel and shuttle fees included!

Excited" So are we!

Just one last thing. If you see any of us out and about tonight, pictures better not end up on your RhyFriends page!

Without further ado, we give you the 2011 Post Pub Crawl!

Stop No. 1: The Stars End Bar and Grill

Yes, yes, we know Stars End isn't necessarily a pub or tavern. But as RhyDin is occasionally a little fuzzy when it comes to cultural experiences we thought we'd let you dip your toes before we throw you straight into the pool. And no disrespect, but real pubs aren't that plentiful in RhyDin! Stars End is everything a spaceport bar should be: industrial, gritty, and naturally, full of sexy alien dancers that appeal to both sexes. Though they aren't running any specials for St. Patty's Day, Stars End has more than enough drinks on their menu to make your experience unique, with new recipes added every week. A word of caution, though! While Stars End is the only place within sane traveling distance of RhyDin that sells Batarian Brew, we strongly recommend either splitting it with a friend or going without tonight if you plan on even making it to the second stop!

Stop No. 2: The Bunker

Our next stop is still pretty gritty, but at least we're back home in RhyDin. Yes, yes. West End really is our home away from home. No, really! It is! And why shouldn't it be with retro, post-Apocalyptic underground bars such as The Bunker" Yes, The Bunker is indeed one of many living testaments to the zombie outbreak of 2007, having been previously named Curly's until Curly himself was" Well, we'll just say Curly doesn't work there anymore. But don't let the boarded-up, ominous appearance from outside fool you. The interior oozes a retro counter-culture vibe, with vintage arcade games and old shuffleboards dating back decades lining the walls. We must advise you, however, to hold onto your wallets at all times. Because of its prime placement right smack outside of the electricity network in West End, The Bunker is susceptible to brownouts and rolling blackouts. So when patrons talk about 'redlighting," rest assured it has nothing to do with losing your job or being thrown off a moving train. In the case of brownouts or blackouts, red emergency lights illuminate the establishment and every drink you order is half off (provided that you finish the one you have)! Also! In addition to keeping one hand on your wallet, we strongly recommend keeping your zombie impressions to yourself. Rumor has it the barkeeps still keep a stash of shotguns next to the cash register.

Stop No. 3: The Great Helm Tavern

If you aren't feeling like a king (or at least acting like one) but the time you get to Great Helm's, you certainly will be once you leave. The Great Helm is the step back in time RhyDin always craves that doesn't have to include birthing babies in the middle of happy hour. Virtually everything about this place is warm and friendly (never mind the angry-looking dueling vets that get their drink on there), but more importantly the tavern employees at Great Helm don't have the word 'small" in their vocabulary. Every pint served may as well be a gallon, and prices of refills are often overlooked unless you are exceptionally impolite. And that includes your drink order! The words "Badsider" or "Silver Mark" best not be leaving your mouth while on the premises, unless you anticipate getting water from the horse trough delivered to you. At Great Helm it is Red Orc or nothing. And make sure to order the Bane's Brew for" oh, no reason in particular.

Stop No. 4: The Silver Mark Pub

If it was owned by Alain DeMuer at any point in its or his life, chances are it is imbued with some kind of godlike heavenliness. The Silver Mark Pub is no exception. Currently run by Atalanta Trenoweth, Silver Mark is the epitome of an English pub smack dab in the middle of RhyDin's Dragon's Gate district. The interior boasts warm wood paneling, and offers cozy, intriguing little eating areas in various places. Constructed out of a two-story brick home on the street corner, Silver Mark is known for its wide selection of locally brewed beer (with much of it brewed right on site). But despite being a managed pub, the managers still maintain the character of a freehouse, offering a wide range of guest ales, beers, and lagers. The environment is that of what you will find at just any English pub: billiards, darts, big fireplaces, and roaming knights. Hey, RhyDin ain't perfect.

Stop No. 5: O"Malley's Irish Pub

O"Malley's may as well be an authentic Irish pub that was built in Dublin and shipped on over to RhyDin in one piece. With live music and dance, great food, and cheery (albeit in-your-face) Irish hospitality, O"Malley's is one great big institution that occupies only a little amount of space. The pub is nestled in the city not far from the Tourist Information Center, and truthfully might be one of the hardest pubs in RhyDin to locate, with only a tiny banner of a clover giving away its position. Though it is slightly a contradiction in and of itself (with a dungeon-like bar setup and pretty waitresses in skimpy plaid uniforms), O"Malley's certainly does the trick in terms of authentic experience, from the Guinness on tap to the hearty colcannon they serve up in heaping helpings. Courtesy of Emmet Bane and the Gossip Column, anyone who makes out at the bar gets an Irish French Kiss on the house. Limit one per customer, please!

Last Stop: The Red Dragon Inn

Because let's face it! Anything that involves alcohol or any kind of excitement RhyDin generally centers around the Red Dragon Inn! By this point " assuming you're doing our crawl correctly " as long as it is green, it should look Irish to you. How very fortunate that RDI tender Risa fully plans on gearing up the place with enough pseudo-Irish paraphernalia that you might be questioning that last absinthe shot you took. The Red Dragon Inn is the ultimate institution in RhyDin, and if you do not plan on ending your crawl for the night here (or if you crawled home already), you must make a point of going at least once in your life. With diverse tenders and excellent people watching, the RDI is truly an adventure every single night. And if you are new to RhyDin, our very own Emmet Bane suggests that you make certain to visit the Inn on a night when either Risa, Lilliana, Harold and Scotty (only if they are together), Keaton, Eless, or Amber are present, as they make the experience infinitely more entertaining and infinitely more welcome.

Go get"cher Irish on!
