Reserve XI: The Truest Characters of Ignorance

An English novelist named Samuel Butler once said that the "truest characters of ignorance are vanity, pride, and arrogance." This is not entirely correct. Vanity, pride, and arrogance, while flaws of the ignorant, can also be strengths of the corrupt. For vanity, pride, and arrogance provide a convincing veil for an otherwise faithless face of debauchery.

Take Mikhail Crowlinn— the face of Reserve XI, whose mission statement is "the research of medical advancements, weapons, and security for the betterment and safety of life as a whole." This so-called "family' company was founded by a coven of witches several hundred years ago, or so a gruesome introductory video describes at the beginning of a tour of the facility. The facility's front is that it specializes in a new and exciting form of technology, known as technomancy.

"Technomancy is a blending of magic and science to achieve incredible results," Crowlinn said. What kind of results he did not specify, though his director of human resources, Natasha Ra"al, kindly brought along a few gadgets they claim to be developing. The devices mainly specialized in defense and protection— from a fluorescent smokescreen to a fiber-optic web-like construct that doubles as a retractable lamp and an adjustable warming blanket. Fine inventions, indeed, but what else does Reserve XI back in its secretive vaults"

When asked about the mysterious collapse of an NUI building (located a few kilometers away from Reserve XI's headquarters,) Crowlinn was quick to deflect with a rote response smelling strongly of a blanket statement:

"It was a building dedicated to product testing," Crowlinn said. "The NUI building was working on a project' and experienced a leak in the central arcana core. This caused a series of explosions which reduced the compound to rubble."

How odd it is that NUI was coincidentally an active protesting site of Reserve XI and its abhorrent industrial activities. And the board executive expects us to believe that NUI voluntary collaborated with Reserve XI on a dangerous and potentially lethal experiment"

It appears Crowlinn needs to reexamine the word "voluntary."

"I can assure you personally, that there isn't a soul at Reserve XI who hasn't come of his or her own accord," claims Crowlinn. "We're a corporation dedicated to the betterment of life everywhere, not tyrants."

Alejandra Munez, mother of a current employee, believes otherwise:

"My son was a good, kind boy, who took care of his mother and worked very hard. One day, I wake up and he's nowhere to be found. I get a letter from him a few days later, explaining that he's gone and "applied" to Reserve XI. Not a word before or after that. He always valued my opinion before, and suddenly, he's a completely changed person. It's not right! They did something to him, I know it!"

Munez isn't the only one who believes brainwashing is on the organization's orientation schedule.

"I saw it, you know. Up in Odious City. They were trucking in living cargo in the middle of the night and marching it in lines into the facility. It had to be humans. They were so organized?" a recent immigrant to RhyDin, who wishes to remain anonymous, said.

So with the huge, albeit questionable influx of employees, where does all the money for the Reserve XI come from"

Grecianite Industries— a company notorious for under-the-table black market weapons dealing— is currently being associated with Reserve XI. Just last year, Glenn Frye was indicted and soon suspiciously acquitted for charges of fraud, embezzlement, and reckless endangerment. Naturally, he and Crowlinn get along famously.

"While I'm well aware of the rumors surrounding Grecianite Industries," Crowlinn said, "Glenn Frye, GI's CEO, and I have undergone months of lengthy discussion regarding these rumors, with investigations taking place both ways. I trust Glenn fully, and his company. The public may not believe at first, that Glenn Frye is a good and honest man?"

Good and honest' As honest as Crowlinn, who keeps his product developments under such tight wraps that his own sister isn't even aware of them"

"Brother hates telling me what he's working on. I think he just like to see me beg," claimed Ra"al, soon after Crowlinn hastily refused to discuss a 'super secret project' he happens to be working on.

But where does the future lie for Reserve XI" According to Crowlinn and Ra"al, with the children.

"Young minds thirst for knowledge. We hope to provide them with the means to obtain that knowledge. Education is an important part of Reserve XI" And the current board won't be there forever. We hope in this, that when we pass on, minds suited for the task will be available to the company?" Crowlinn explained.

That's right: Indoctrination, obligatory enforcement, delusion, and now dictatorial plans. Oh but they can get away with it. As long as the Reserve buries itself under a mountain red tape and hosts the occasional (questionably) documented fundraiser, local law enforcement is none the wiser.

Mikhael Crowlinn— vain in his vision, prideful in his dangerous work, and arrogant of the Reserve XI's transparent front— is the epitome of what makes, or more likely has made a corrupt autocrat. But as long as he keeps law enforcement distracted and industrial tycoons happy, he won't be touched.

A word to the wise: If you insist on running a black-market dealership in the middle of a suburban city, at least put on a smile. The children are watching.
