Smallpox Outbreak at Local Orphanage March 28, 2011

SHAMBLES, RHYDIN —- Several staff members and children taking up residence in a RhyDin orphanage were diagnosed this month with an infective case of active smallpox, which led to the deaths of at least five to ten children and adults, sources said Sunday.

According to neighbors, the Rose House, located in the Shambles district of RhyDin, entered a state of quarantine at approximately seven AM on January fourth, 2011. The first patient who contracted the disease was reported to have been one of the younger children taking up residence there. He was examined by a physician from the adjacent Shambles Clinic, who quickly called for the isolation and quarantine of the building and its residents following a positive diagnosis of smallpox. Nearby homes were also evacuated and a cordon was set up around the area, preventing access to or from the facility.

Mataru Frondaya, director of the Shambles Clinic, confirmed that the adapted strain of smallpox was indeed diagnosed at the beginning of January this year.

"As of March 28th 2011, Rose House is undergoing decontamination, and will be inspected by a highly trained team before the isolation and quarantine is fully lifted," Frondaya said in an interview with the Post this morning. "We are hopeful that by the end of the week, those inside the orphanage will be out of any danger."

Staff members are hopeful that the quarantine will be lifted by April fourteenth, following a vigorous decontamination process that involves disinfecting the quarters and burning furniture, soft furnishings, and fittings. Staff members not officially part of the quarantine assure the public that Rose House will not open its doors until a team of representatives from an independent organization inspect and verify that all traces of the disease have been eradicated.

The Rose House Orphanage and school opened in March of 2000 under the ownership and care of Rowena Millard, and has the capacity to house seventeen children under the age of seventeen. At the time of the incident, eight children between the ages of three and thirteen were living there.

Smallpox is a serious and contagious disease that causes rash on the skin, and can lead to fatal complications such as fever, encephalitis, bone and skin infection, and pneumonia. Anyone experiencing any of these symptoms is urged to contact their primary healthcare physician immediately.

Though Rose House could not be reached for comment, neighboring sources claim that every effort is being made to make the home safe for children again.
