A tale of two very different people and their journey to find their true heart's desire.

"Hey, Mike..where's Vinny' I want to walk with him to the fight. Haven't had the chance to see him in the arena or annex or whatever it is yet. Has he left the tower yet?" She'd been so busy trying to put the finishing touches on a couple of important projects, that Kenzie hadn't stuck her head out of the apartment for awhile. She'd took just enough time to take a quick shower, put on a pair of tight blue jeans, a red sweater and a black leather jacket since it was so cold out now. All of which took less than ten minutes. "I'll hurry and catch up with him so we can go together."

There was a short, silent pause as if the AI did not know the right answer. 'The fight has already taken place, Miss Quinn. I'm sorry to inform you that he has lost the match.'

"No, no, that's not possible. I looked at my watch and still had over an hour before it should have started. I couldn't have missed it.." When painting, one does have a way of losing track of time; but, could she truly have been so focused that the entire match was over" "Oh god, he must hate me now." I am unable to confirm or deny the answer to said question, Miss Quinn.

"I know you can't, Mike. That's OK. I'll go try to find him at the tower."

I shall see that the door is open for you, Miss Quinn.

Her mind was spinning. How could she be so stupid as to let this happen. She had to be the worst girlfriend..or potential girlfriend ever! Luckily, she had a good pair of running shoes on to get her across town. But, she'd be out of breathe upon skidding through Mike's open door. "How much trouble am I in, Mike?"

I am unable to ..

"Never mind, Mike. I'll find out soon enough."

He had kept the lights off in the penthouse, choosing to stew over in a chair looking out the window with a strong drink. It hadn't been a fun night for him and his team. It was probably the worst loss of his career, or at the very least in the top 5. The plan was to drink and brood all night until he heard the door open. Which meant it could only be one person.

"Lights. One quarter." He didn't want her to trip over something. That would've made a bad night worse. She'd be able to spot the bruises right off. He'd picked up quite a few tonight. "I'm actully glad you didn't make it. I got my ass kicked and would've felt even worse if you had to witness it."

Walking up to a place which was once full of light and now sat eerily dark felt a bit unnerving. As if a shroud of death now encompassed the place. Maybe Kenzie didn't fully understand the importance placed on these bouts. In her world, where she'd trained and competed in martial arts, you win or lose. Losing was painful; but, time didn't allow her to brood overly long over any one competition. Life has a way of moving forward even if you want to go back and make corrections.

She remembered the sting of losing a few matches very clearly. Just as clearly, she remembered her father's words that always followed. "If you've got time to sulk, you've got plenty of time to muck out the barns. I suggest you choose the latter." Hard labor made you sweat and made you forget because it changed the focus. Her father used the sweat equity method to keep life in perspective and it worked more than most other ways of disciplining his hellion of a daughter.

Sounds like Vinny could use a different perspective about now.

Before she could say a single word to Mike, the AI had already opened the door. "Hey, Vinny.." Kenz had a pretty good nose on her and instantly detected the smell of alcohol. He didn't seem like someone who might lose his temper after soaking in the drink; but, she'd tread lightly at first just in case. As her eyes focused more easily in the low light, he would see her wince at the bruises. "Oh wow, yeah that has to hurt. A little ice can make it feel better." Before she'd leave him to grab it, her first stop was to take a seat beside him for a better look while leaning in, speaking softly. "You know what? I've fought fights and lost more than once. It happens. No one is indestructible. Life is more about how you get up than how you fall down." Pressing a kiss to his cheek.

Vinny

Date: 2017-11-24 10:09 EST
Her presence was a welcome distraction from his bruises and brooding. "Oh, I've lost quite a few in my time. And I'll get over it eventually. I just don't like losing." A small smile starting to appear on his face as she gave him that kiss.

As she got up to get an ice pack, he shifted a little in his chair. "Now that you're here, I'm hoping you could spend the night, or at least keep me company for a while." It would be a welcome distraction for him. Some nice conversation and a chance to get to know her a little more.

Kenzie

Date: 2017-11-25 21:22 EST
"I'm pretty sure your stance on losing is pretty high up there with anyone else's opinion of doing so. But, it still happens." Heading towards the freezer to get an ice pack or two. While there, Kenzie discovered the ice cream. One chocolate and one vanilla. Whether he indulged himself or maybe it was a member of his staff, those two cartons would still be 'borrowed' along with the spoons while balancing the ice. She'd even make him scoot so there was room for them both.

The idea of spending the night earned an arched brow. "It's possible. I'm fairly good at keeping people company."

Vinny

Date: 2017-11-28 17:13 EST
He slid over to the side of the chair, which left her a little room, though she would still be half in his lap. The ice pack being applied to his now quite black and blue eye. "You're pretty good at keeping me company. I'm certainly not going to complain about it."

He gave a small grin as he looked over the ice cream. "I see you found a little stash. Are we going to raise my spirits with sweets? I'm also going to suggest a good movie if we're going to relax a bit. Mike! Play Casablanca for me. A good Bogart movie is always good for my spirits. If we're still awake, follow it up with The Maltese Falcon, The Big Sleep, and the African Queen. In any order you see fit."

His gaze focusing back on Kenzie. "I hope you don't mind my choosing the movies tonight. If you'd rather do something else, I can change things around. "

Kenzie

Date: 2017-11-30 13:37 EST
"If you were to complain, I'd just shove a huge ball of ice cream in your mouth. Though, I doubt you'd stay silent once that cold bite gave you a headache." Kenzie was sweet enough most days; but, she also had quite a bit of devilry to keep life interesting.

As she settled beside him on the couch, both brows raised at his taste in movies. "I've heard of only one of those movies; but, never seen any of them." The last movie she'd watched had been a Thor movie in a huge theater. "So it's best that you choose which ones and in what order."

Vinny

Date: 2017-11-30 17:01 EST
He smirked and poked her nose. "You keep up that sass and you may end up getting thrown into a tub full of cold water." Not that he had any intention of doing it, but it sounded kind of tough. "I've got a thing for the classics. Things were better then. More good dialogue and plot, less of the fancy explosions."

As the movie went on, he found himself playing with her hair in between bites of ice cream. "Hope you're enjoying it so far. I know I'm a little more relaxed now. And less broody." Which was true, and he knew what would happen to him if he wasn't. "Anything else I can get for you, or are you all set?"

Kenzie

Date: 2017-12-01 20:19 EST
"I go in, you go in." Arching her brow right back at Vinny. Kenzie may seem like a wispy little thing; but, he shouldn't let that fool him. On the bright side, with her around, he wouldn't find too many times where he'd have the chance to be bored.

When it came to his love of the old..old movies, she'd be way out of her element. "I watch It's a Wonderful Life each Christmas. That's about the oldest movie I've seen. My own favorites are somewhat newer. A Knight's Tale and The Replacements. The latter had lousy reviews; but, it's so funny that I'll stop and watch it every time."

Once they had settled in and the first movie started, he'd find she did have the ability to be quiet and that she seemed fascinated with the movie Casablanca.

Vinny

Date: 2017-12-04 15:33 EST
The thought of the two of them going into the tub got a small laugh from him. "I fail to see where the problem with that is." An arm going around her, just in case he had to send her into the tub, she could grab ahold of him and pull him along.

He was quietly happy that she seemed to be enjoying the movie. They didn't quite make them like this anymore. "It's a Wonderful Life, eh' Classic one. Before Christmas, I always try to watch A Charlie Brown Christmas, Die Hard, and some years Gremlins if I remember. Three of the best Christmas movies out there. We can sit down and watch some of yours next time. It' only fair." He wouldn't knock any of her movie choices. Everyone had those quirky guilty pleasures, even him. But if she asked him to watch Titanic or Avatar, she was going to have to bribe him pretty hard.

As Casablanca was beginning to come to a close, he looked over at her, smiled, and asked her if she wanted anything, or if she wanted to go into the next movie, or do something else. Movie marathons were a hard thing sometimes, even for him.

Kenzie

Date: 2017-12-06 13:47 EST
She did enjoy the movie; but, watching more than one might be a bit much. Especially after the yawn which followed the movies ending. There was an almost cat like stretch from head to toe before an idea came to mind.

You know, it's almost Christmas and you don't have a tree. Here you are in the big space with no lights, no decorations..nothing.

Have you ever had one?

Vinny

Date: 2017-12-06 15:13 EST
There was a moment of silence as he had to think for a moment before replying. "You know, I don't think I've ever really celebrated Christmas here before. I usually think of it as a kids thing, and where I don't have any and no one else is normally around to celebrate with me, I tend to play Scrooge and ignore it."

He had a feeling about where this conversation was going, and he decided to beat her to the punch. "Want to go help me find one tomorrow and we'll spruce up the place?"

Kenzie

Date: 2017-12-06 23:00 EST
"I've never celebrated Christmas here before either. Guess we'll both be on the same page." There's nothing like brightly strung lights on a tree and spread around a room to make the holidays come to life. It would give some semblance of home.

"It'd be nice if you won't be playing Scrooge this year. Even if it's just for one night. No presents required.." Kenz didn't want to ever give him a reason to think her motives for being with him were dishonest. She was pretty sure he'd been stung enough by those with bad intentions in the past.

Seems he was reading her mind when Vinny just happened to suggest they add a tree to make his place more festive. "Sounds like a great idea to me."

Vinny

Date: 2017-12-08 12:36 EST
Christmas tree, lights, egg nog. What was he signing himself up for" It seemed like it could be a fun time, but it was still uncharted territory for him. "How crazy are we going to go with it' Just a few decorations, or are we turning this place into Santa's village?"

A big yawn coming out of him. Thinking was hard work. "And what are we going to do about sleeping arrangements tonight' As comfy as we are now, I'm not sure we'll be thinking that after a few hours of sleep."

Kenzie

Date: 2017-12-08 16:47 EST
What was he signing himself up for? Glad he didn't say that out loud or she'd be highly disappointed. Christmas was one of her favorite holidays. The tree, the lights and the snow on the rare occasion that happens.

"It's just a small tree.." Gauging his interest or lack there of. "A few lights on it. Maybe some ornaments. If that's not to your liking, I'll just put one in my apartment." Which is also where she'd sleep so he wouldn't have any need to figure out who goes where. Obviously they were both two very different people with very different views of the holidays.

"How long has it been since you celebrated a holiday of any kind, Vinny' You don't have to be a kid to enjoy yourself. Besides, I'm not really tired at the moment.."

Vinny

Date: 2017-12-08 17:14 EST
Her question caught him a little off guard. He stopped, thought about it, and got a funny look on his face. "Not since I've been here. So about twenty years, at least. I'd kind of forgotten what it was like to do that." A light sigh coming out of him. "I just never was able to get into the festivities, other than occasionally running into some stuff on the street. Lately, I've just been too much of a recluse. The holiday season isn't very fun when it's just you and an AI to keep you company." Who knew though, maybe she'd pull him out of his shell a bit and help him be a little more festive.

"We can put one in both places. And maybe make some egg nog. That is one thing I do like about this time of year." He liked snow too...maybe some other things if he thought hard about it. Playing with her hair as he looked up at the tv. "Mike! Change of plans. Put on The Charlie Brown Christmas special. I'm going to watch it with someone other than myself this year."

Kenzie

Date: 2017-12-08 20:45 EST
"So, what you're saying is that you've forgotten what it's like to live a real life. Sure, the AI is great for many things in this tower; but, think of how much you have missed out on in twenty years of hiding away here." While it suddenly dawned on her that means there is rather sizable age difference, living in a place like this seemed to have a way of freezing time. Even if they were miles apart in age, she didn't mind. However, he'd have to be accommodating to getting out more. It was important for her to have friends and a social life so it'd be nice if Vinny would be a part of it.

For now, baby steps.

"How about we start over with the basics. Tomorrow we can get a tree and a few lights in your place or mine."

"Tonight, You can share your favorite drink with me, we'll watch the Charlie Brown movie. When that's over, we can play some nice music.." Growing up with grandparents who loved records, she'd be familiar with songs from his era pretty well. "If we happen to fall asleep on the couch, so be it. I'll try not to take up all the room." Draping her arm over his chest while resting her head on his shoulder. "This is a good movie by the way..I love Woodstock."

Vinny

Date: 2017-12-13 00:19 EST
"What is life?" he philisophically asked. Even though she was right and he had spent a fair amount of his recent years hiding away up here. "I think it starts with getting a tree, for both our places, and finding a few cutesy ornaments to put on them. And no, I won't try any funny business."

He opened up a small portal next to them, reached in, and pulled out two London sours. Handing her one with a smile. "My favorite drink. If you don't like it, I'll be happy to drink it for you." Eyes going back to the movie. "In my opinion, Linus' speech is criminally underrated. Says a lot about life, the universe, and what people should act like."

Kenzie

Date: 2017-12-13 20:46 EST
What is life? That was a deep question. "Life is what?s spinning around you every single day. All those things you've not left your tower long enough to notice. The moon, stars the beauty of the universe itself. Drinking a cold beer on a hot day..snuggling in a warm blanket on a cold night. Sledding down a hill at break neck speed. Give me a few weeks, I'll make you remember."

Envisioning the scene in her mind.

"Buuuuuut, it starts with a tree, a few ornaments, some hot chocolate and mistletoe. The later may be the hardest to find."

When he pulled out those London sours, she'd pop the top on hers and offer a clink to his own glass before taking a sip. "Oooo..that's pretty good." chuckling at he statement about the universe. "Well, you can't control the masses. But, you can watch a peanut's movie.."

Vinny

Date: 2017-12-15 09:32 EST
She was right in that he had been fairly detached from things as of late. He'd seen world, been to several places in the multiverse, but hadn't really lived the little things that made life enjoyable. The thought of doing so was itself almost a foreign concept to him, but one that he was looking forward to doing. Likely without the cheats and shortcuts he had at his call. Which would probably feel...normal. A concept he hadn't had to experience in years. Would that make a paradox about normal being extraordinary considering is was the less common of the occurrences"

"Mistletoe" That's easy enough to find, if we want Mike to do our shopping. But, I think you'd have more fun if we went and did it ourselves." He had been leaning on Mike a lot lately, more from convenience than anything. It was probably a good thing for him to do his own work for once before he became soft and complacent about it.

Taking a sip of his drink, he went back to watching the movie with her. "Snoopy is also a jerk. A lovable one, but still a jerk. Still, I'd probably have him as a dog if I ever wanted a pet."

Kenzie

Date: 2017-12-18 15:53 EST
Sometimes the crux of the problem is you're just thinking it through too much. That's what she believed anyway. It's often better to undo the shackles and burdens of life and just remember what it's like to live in the now. Put up a tree, put on some lights and a few ornaments, get out in the snow and remember what it's like to be five or ten sliding down the hills on a trash can lid or whatever you could ride on.

"I think Mike needs a break now and then don't you? We can get our own little tree, put on a few strands of light and find our own mistletoe." Hopefully, he'd find some fun in the whole adventure. "Probably too early for you to get a real dog; but, I bet you could build one. Might be more your style."

Vinny

Date: 2017-12-20 10:47 EST
What was left of his drink was being swirled as he thought about it. "Do you know a good place to get one, or are we going to cut down out own?" He wasn't sure how she planned on getting one, but he was certain he knew how to use an axe without chopping off an appendage. It'd be more fun that way, anyways. Just walking up and paying for a tree was like hunting a deer by walking outside and paying someone for one that had already been shot. Unsatisfying, really.

There was a bit of blinking as she mentioned him getting a dog. "Ha. I've avoided getting a pet so far because I'm always worried about spending enough time with it and I don't want it to be the responsibility of the staff. A mechanical one would work, but it just wouldn't feel the same." He didn't mention that he could engineer one to his exact specifications and weed out some undesirable traits down in the lab, but that would kind of defeat the purpose of enjoying a pet for what it was.

The late night was making him a little philosophical. "Want to play a game" It's like truth or dare, except it's truth or truth."

Kenzie

Date: 2017-12-21 17:04 EST
"My family always got a tree the tried and true way. By walking through two feet of snow, or more, to find the perfect one. By that, I mean it was usually more of an imperfect tree. Not the Charlie Brown tree so much; but, pretty close. Even those trees that most see as ugly can beautiful with some tinsel and a few candy canes. It was always a cedar because my dad would create things from the heart wood once the wood had been left to season good enough. It has the best smell of any tree around." Made her smile just thinking about it.

As far as animals go, you either love them or you didn't. "I grew up with plenty of animals around. Chickens, ducks, bulls, turkeys, horses...lots of horses. I always had a dog. Not big on cats. They can be unpredictable. A dog can be trained. But, I guess you can train a mechanical one much easier though." Giggling softly. He was a different kind of guy.

Her head titled a bit at the idea of a truth or truth game. That doesn't leave much room for much. "And if you don't like the answer?" Everyone has a side they'd rather not talk about.

Vinny

Date: 2017-12-27 13:23 EST
"Hey, don't knock the Charlie brown tree. It works just fine with a little sprucing up." He thought for a minute on the merits of various woods. he wasn't a woodworker by nature, but he had come across a few trees in his day. Usually from a safe distance. Who knew what they would do to you if you got close enough. "I'll take your word for it about the cedar. Maybe you'll show me once we're done with the tree."

A little shrug and grin given as she wondered about his game, a finger coming out to poke her nose. "Truth is, it's nice having company to relax with. And as much fun as it would be to keep you up all night, we should probably attempt to get some rest if we're going to be out and about in the morning." He knew she wasn't the type to ask pointed questions, but he was the type to make an occasional bad joke.

Kenzie

When it came to sleeping arrangements, he'd find she was amicable to share the bed; but..and it was a big but..if Vinny was expecting to have a romp, he hadn't earned the goodies yet. Would he ever" Perhaps. The age difference does make a difference. Couple that with that fact that, despite the tattoos and red hair which most men seem to believe is an open invitation for her to be loose, Kenzie had a family. A family that hammered a certain amount of moral values into her head.

She could also hear her mother's words on replay in her head every time she was about to go out on a date. 'If there's an 'oops' and you pregnant all of your dreams will be ruined.' Which seems a little harsh since kids are kind of cute. But, Kenzie had never aspired to have children. At least not until she was forty or more. There was a whole world..actually, more than one world as she knew now. Being latched to a kid would surely put a kink in her personal aspirations.

But, she didn't see Vinny as someone who wanted to tie her down or be heavy handed. Could she claim to know him enough to be sure"

______________________

Once the holidays were over, Kenzie had picked up a few jobs and stayed quite busy in her own apartment to do her work which took place in the span of about three weeks. If he wanted to come over, the door was always open for Vinny. Then he'd find her trying to complete a few paintings which would probably leave him bored. But, when they were apart, she'd always manage to send a little note his way..with Mike's help of course.

It was always just a short quote so he'd know she was still around.

"Life isn't about finding yourself. It's about creating yourself." George Bernard Shaw

Vinny

It was a quiet night once they decided to settle in. He'd just gone about his regular routine and helped her find anything she needed. He knew she wasn't ready to have those kinds of escapades just yet and honestly, it didn't matter to him. Her company was enough. By the time they both got into bed, he'd let her enjoy most of it while he stayed near the edge, and was out cold shortly after giving her a goodnight kiss.

The next few days were among the best he'd had in a while. Cutting down a tree, finding some ornaments and mistletoe, being a generally normal and cheerful person. Even Mike got in on it by singing a few songs and pretending to get drunk off spiked egg nog. With her Christmas present, he tried not to go too overboard. He knew she wouldn't go for some extravagant gifts, and she was the kind of person who'd prefer something from the heart. So he went with a stained glass heart, handmade down in the lab with some help from Mike and a few instruction manuals.

After the festivities had quieted down, they had settled slowly back into their regular lives. She had been busy with projects. He was up to no good down in the lab. He'd visited a few times, and enjoyed watching her work on the paintings. Just to provide company and keep the two of them from shutting out the rest of the world. It was easy for them to get absorbed into what they were doing. But anytime spent with her was good time.

After a few days of this, he decided to respond to her little notes with one of his own- "How about I create ourselves up a nice dinner and we enjoy a night out?"

Kenzie

Date: 2018-01-05 20:51 EST
Smart move. A very smart move on his part. Though it left Vinny barely hanging on to his side of the bed most of the night after sharing a smooch or two. Hopefully, he'd be pleasantly surprised to wake up the next morning with her back pressed against his own. To turn ones back on someone, especially before falling asleep, meant putting a great deal of trust in that person.

Kenzie was proud to see how Vinny threw himself into the holiday decorations. From the tree to the lights, mistletoe and decorations, there was no one complaint. If she didn't know better, Kenz would swear he might even be enjoying himself a wee bit. After going through all that trouble to create their own little winter wonderland, she was perfectly content. Then he slipped a present into the mix as well. The stained glass heart was stunning. "That's not fair." Admiring the gift all the same. "I didn't get you anything."

_____

As the holidays wound to a close, she'd done well with her paintings and made enough to pay the bills and put a bit away. So his suggestion of a night out was perfectly timed.

Sending a message. "Sounds like a great idea. You fix the dinner and I'll bring dessert."

Vinny

Once they'd settled on a time, he was excited to see it finally arrive. He'd thought about what to cook and eventually settled on a salad to start, followed by pad thai that had just enough spice to add flavor, but not enough to burn her taste buds off. All made from scratch because he thought she would appreciate it more than if the hotel chefs cooked it up for them. However, the one thing he did leave to the chefs was the cheesecake, because he couldn't bake worth a damn. Some candles, a little light music playing in the background, and the ambiance was all set for a nice, relaxing dinner.

"Mike! Kindly warn Kenzie that I'll be opening up a portal in her living room if she's ready to come over. I don't want to just pop in and scare the dickens out of her."

Kenzie

Date: 2018-01-22 12:14 EST
It would be nice not to be surprised and suddenly put a fist to his face. That would be a bad start to a what should be a good night. She was quite surprised how he went all out for the occasion. Was sweet of him to put so much effort into it.

Once the portal opened to her apartment, she was ready and, for once, not dressed so casually. In fact, she'd taken that the long gown from the auction and turn it into one that stopped just below the knee. More comfortable and now reusable. A win-win.

"Wow..this place smells wonderful. ..hi, by the way." Giving a sheepish little wave.
