A late spring storm had visited the area and seemed to have decided to stay a few days. As dreary as it had been, the land needed the rain.

Jun stared out of the grand window, watching the raindrop cascade down its panes against the light grey backdrop of sky. It'd been amazingly quiet, even for the House. He sat at the feet of his mother, she on a extravagant vanity stool right behind him, running a brush through his hair.

Part of him hated this, but then sometimes it was the only time he got with her. She never let him cut his hair. As a matter of fact, only she was allowed to trim it. Jun barely listened anymore as to why. He knew the reason was Ancient and about honor and your station in life. Jun knew that his mother never cut hers either. He'd never seen it completely down. Only Ami had and when she washed it or dressed it. He knew it was long and glorious, a river of ebony he was sure that would follow her if she ever wore it without any pins or adornments. Only the most intimate, and trusted of lovers would be allowed to see it completely down. Ami, while she was not allowed to have short hair, was allowed to cut it and style as she pleased. She tended to keep it very mild, dedication to her station within the Clan. All other could wear it how ever they wished, short, long, loose. Any way but a Queue. He did wonder though, about his former Hakase.

Mother was done brushing and nimbly working a braid to keep the snow white hair out of his face. Jun leaned back a little, resting his back against her knees. He must has sighed or thought aloud. His mother's voice filled the empty room even though still soft.

"And what is the matter today?"

He wasn't sure if she was really interested or not. It was hard to tell at times. She had asked, so he would answer. He never feared telling her the truth.

"I hate it here." "Is that all?" "Isn't that enough?" "No." She actually chuckled at him as she finished off the end of the braid and bound it within a gold clasp hiding the loose ends.
