The sun was warm overhead " a nice change from several days of rain " while Johnny called across the ordered chaos that currently filled the Southern Glen. It was Friday the 30th of April, at just past noon, and volunteers were moving this way and that, putting the last touch on the decorations for the Beltane Festival. One of those volunteers sported a mop of bright red hair and two inches of extra height from a recent growth spurt, and that was the target of Johnny's holler.

"Val! C"mon over here." He waved his arm over his head in a summoning sweep, and then laughed as he felt a small fist rap into the back of his head when Meg mimicked the gesture. She'd been happily riding in a backpack-style carrier all morning, burbling almost-words that were imitations of Johnny's shouts, interspersed with the occasional and very defiant "NO!" for no reason at all.

Val finished tugging the bench beneath the May Queen's wicker half-tent into place before he ran across the field " dodging a woman carrying a tray of oatmeal-raisin cookies toward the children's craft tent. "Queen's platform is all set, just gotta add some flowers an' such-like to it later. Wha'd"ya want, Mister Johnny?" "Folks'll be showin" up with th' kids any minute, an' I haven" seen Si with Caitir an' Ian ye". Think ya can run on back an' see if she's needin" a han?" Migh' have lef" her a little bi" too much ta juggle while we were over here setttin" up." Johnny grinned at Val while he waved to another volunteer who was setting out piles of flowers for the kids to make wreaths and chains with.

"Sure thing!" Val replied and then bolted off down the path back toward the City. Johnny put his hands on his hips while he watched the boy run, with the classic Smith grin spread over his face. Val had rapidly become much more than "just' an apprentice, and Johnny was proud of how well he was doing. After another moment, he turned and looked back over the Glen.

Tea lights were hanging from the trees along the path approaching the Glen, and colorful paper lanterns hung all around the main gathering area, just waiting to be lit at dusk. Until then, the sun was shining down on rustic wooden tables and benches and small potted herb plants that were intended for guest-gifts. Val had just finished arranging the May Queen's dais, and across the clearing from that, the craft tent for the children's events was set up and waiting. There was the station for the flower wreaths and crowns, another set up for May Pole decorating, and a third set up for painting small terra-cotta flower pots.

Just to one side, a face-painting table was set up, and next to that was a small barrel ring racing course was laid out with all its supplies. Everything looked like it was ready, so Johnny headed over to find someone who could help him free Meggie from her backpack carrier.

Mandy pulled on the older girl, Violet's, hand to get her to move faster. "Come on, Vi. We're gonna miss everything!" She flashed her pointed canines.

Violet sighed a heavy breath that pushed white hair out of blue eyes. "Mandy, I am not intimidated by your teeth, and we are not going to miss everything. Mrs. June got us all ready in plenty of time." The older girl wished Mrs. June had come along, but little baby Victoria was running a fever, and there was just no way. It was left to her and Madeline, a girl about her age with auburn hair as long as a river and cat like eyes of yellow, to look after the eight other children from High Spires House that wanted to attend the family portion of the Beltane celebrations.

"Hey," Sampson came running up, his hawk like eyes wide beneath his shock of white hair. Unlike Violet, his skin was pale counter to her dusky hue. They were not, as every child kept hunting for hopeful signs in each other, related. "Wasn't that Val I just saw running by?"

Violet turned about and paused, which did not please Mandy at all. A firm tug on her arm pitched her a little sideways. "Mandy, if you make me fall and ruin my Beltane dress, you'll hear it from Mrs. June."

"What is going on back there?" Madeline called, her own hands full with Penny on one side and faun-horned Jamie on the other.

"Did you see Val go by?"

"I wouldn't know Val if I saw him. I did see a red-haired boy go by. What does it matter?" She did not wait for an answer, but turned on down the road.

The Glen was not much further. Hearing the sounds and catching glimpses of festoons through the trees only added bounce to all the children's steps. Jamie's hooves clip clopped with excitement. They turned up to the field and smiles faint before broke into glee.

Alfie and Freddy took off towards the barrel ring racing course. "Hold it!" Violet called after them. Heels took little gouges in the dirt as they stopped and turned back with dramatic sighs and slumping shoulders. "Now, everyone let's go over the rules again. Anasta, rule number 1?"

The shy black haired girl with cornflower blue eyes looked up, then lifted her clasped hand with Laura. "Always have a buddy."

"Everyone have a buddy?" Madeline looked over the group. Pairs of hands raised out of the girls and the boys put arms around each other's shoulders — briefly.

"Penny, rule number 2?"

Unlike Anasta, Penny made sure her pointed ears showed. Her blond hair was pulled back in a ribbon and flowered ponytail. "Don't go anywhere with anyone except High Spires group from the glen."

"And Mrs. June means anyone. I don't care if it is your best friend from time ago or one of our favorite High Spires friends. You don't go. Got it?" Violet eyed Freddy, who tended to take on adventures without much need for encouragement.

"I got it. Can we go now?"

All the children looked up at the eldest two and with an exchange of looks, Madeline answered. "Yes."

The children scattered like an explosion of fireworks across the field to partake in the festivities. "So, buddy," Violet teased Madeline. "What are we going to do?"

"My dear," Madeline smiled and pushed back that river length of auburn hair, "we are going to flirt."

Not too far from the main events that the townsfolk had set up for the children's events, Lilliana had set a brightly lit trail of ribbons and tea lights to direct the more outgoing youths towards her caravan. The walk itself was wrought with little magical touches meant to delight and entice them further, and just for safety precautions, the buxom had extended her witchy ways out to guard and ward the trail against any ill influences or creatures lurking about looking for a wayward snack! Magic gobblers and would-be evil doers beware, this witch's power is not to be trifled with; it's rooted to the earth itself. To destroy her wards is to destroy the very landscape.

Down, down, down the brightly lit rabbit hole the kids would eventually find the sprawl of the gypsy witch's caravan. She'd a bright bonfire going, snacks aplenty, a deliciously cool, sweat tea, and a plethora of costume items. It wasn't long before she had a collection big enough to begin with...

"Tha's righ' m' chickadees! Ya' go' i' now! One, t'wo, three, spin! One, t'wo, dip! One, t'wo, three, spin! Oh yer all fas' learners, I hope all the adul's on thursday will cat'ch on this well!" The fiery buxom was amongst a thick of children, though mostly girls, there were a few boys that'd found their way to her little corner of the Glen too. The gypsy tacked that particular bit of luck down to the ideas of young love. What lad didn't want to see the lass he fancies dressed in all sorts of lovely little silks and fancy spring bells?

From the corner of her molten eyes Lilliana could see her theory at work. There was a would be romeo inching closer to one of the taller brunette girls. Laughing softly, the gypsy wheeled about on her bell-jeweled feet and snatched up the boy by his ear and wound him closer to her for a quick, impromptu whirl with the blushing youth. "Ahhh, no' payin' att'ent'ion t'where ya' should be I see!" The gypsy crooned at her squirming 'dance partner' with a grin.

"I wasn't doin' nothin'! Patricia asked for help!" The boy bleated as a few of the other children began to giggle as their instructor was giving their friend a one on one addressing.

"Uh huh....I'm no' tha' old tha' I don' know mischief when I see i'! No smoochin' on m't'ime darlin'! No' unless i's a big ole' kiss fer me as thanks fer the lessons." Lilliana puckered up her lips and dipped in to sneak a kiss at the boy's brow, but she'd also let her arms loose a bit, giving her captive a chance to run away. And run he did, right back into the thick of the giggling youths. A few of the other boys were howling with laughter, while the brunette the other boy had been zeroing in on was blushing with the rest of her friends. With her hands on her hips, the gypsy shook her head, feigning hurt.

"Now ya've gone an' hur' m'feelin's! I don't know if we can cont'inue on a' this rat'e!" Seeing her students' excitement begin to simmer down and recollect themselves, the gypsy clapped her hands and began another whirling set. ________________________________________ ________________________________________

Something for the children, that's what they were there to do. Exactly how does one, rather, a pair of sisters, keep the attention of children younger than themselves? Storytelling, but with visual aids and giving voice to the characters in the story. Their mother often told stories in such a fashion.

Rhi and Nikki had been sewing clothes for the puppets they'd made. The wooden figures had once been a popular pastime in their home, but that changed as the children grew older. Chael and Dee Dee were lending a hand as well. The younger girls built the stage and little theater with plywood and two by fours. Garrick join the mix by cutting the wood. Draven and Mir were set to work painting. Collie chuckled as she watched the youngest of her sons together.

They were few traditional Celtic tales that were appropriate for very young children, so, the girls improvised with using Cinderella as their main story. However, there was one thing most children like watching, animals. Three Billy Goats Gruff was their secondary tale. Rachael played background music on a small keyboard that had been brought along. The six hands of Rhi, Nikki, and Dee started to move the goat puppets quickly, making them dance. The music changed to something lively! Rachael had brought along her violin; she preferred to call it a fiddle especially for dancing tunes. The favorite of the day started out:

High on a hill was a lonely goatherd Lay ee odl lay ee odl lay hee hoo Loud was the voice of the lonely goatherd Lay ee odl lay ee odl-oo

((The lyric is from The Lonely Goatherd.))

She insisted on walking. While he valued her independence the distance from her to the ground was considerably different from the ground to him and after the first hour spent hunched slightly to the left to keep those chubby little fingers in his roughened hand he was beginning to think he'd never walk straight again.

Of course, the other little hand was already muffling a yawn. Whispery blonde strands of hair escaped the braids he had woven in her hair no matter how tightly he clasped them. But at least he had been successful. She was his third daughter and his youngest child and Evey was rambunctious, demanding, and utterly adorable. Getting her to sit still long enough to have her hair tamed was a continued exercise in patience.

Pheobe and Bastian were arguing up ahead over their sugary confections guaranteed to keep them up for hours on a vibrating frequency designed to break things. Blaire had just had her face painted with a vivid design of tied knots and butterfly wings and was entranced by a puppet show.

The men he had dispersed amongst the crowd were doing their best to blend in but anyone with a keen eye could clearly recognize the movements of trained soldiers despite their casual garb.

Evey turned big eyes up at him and pouted, "I'm sweepy."

"Yes, dollface, I know." He smirked at her display of temper at the betrayal of the Sandman and lifted her up onto his hip, his body practically rejoicing in hymn at being upright again. She burrowed into his shoulder and he brushed a strand of golden fleece-y down from her forehead.

"It's all painting, music, songs...and Girls." The disgruntled groan from his right revealed the re-arrival of Roarke.

"From my understanding this festival is dedicated to women." Lachlan explained as humor danced in his golden eyes.

"Well. Hmph. Women like to beat things up and chase things down too." Roarke puffed. "Do none of these people have sisters?"

Lachlan's easy laugh carried through the crowd.

Fia Calriss

It took Fia longer than she'd expected, but, she reflected that she'd had a bit of a late night to go along with her early morning. She'd managed to appropriate a cart, which was currently stocked with flowers. A good number of flowers. She had some roses in shades of red and white, but those were going towards the decorations for the May Queen, along with the blackthorn and hawthorn canes. Meanwhile, in smaller baskets, were the blossoms from aforementioned bushes, along with some of Fia's own treasure trove of force grown lavender, to smell sweet when the kiddies decided to make wreaths. Lavender might not have been a Beltane flower, but it did have a nice fragrance. Not to mention, with little ones running around, it wasn't something that would have someone running to a healer if a fistful was crammed in a mouth.

She'd left those blossoms in the greenhouse.

Luckily, there were a wealth of other flowers and leaves for little hands to make into flower wreaths. Lilac sprigs, myrtle, primroses, sweet woodruff. She'd tried to keep to the flowers of Beltane lore—the lavender was her own single contribution, in shades similar to the lilac, white and purple and blue-violet. To aid in the wreath creation there were also carefully trimmed thin young branches of blackthorn and hawthorn—and the trimmed thorns? She'd saved those, and was planning to make a contribution to the May Queen's Beltane fire later. Laid alongside the basket of branches was a bushel basket of long, trimmed grasses to help wrap the flowers all together.

Fia got out of the way of the major hustle and bustle quickly enough, and after delivering the roses to the hands that needed them, settled down amongst her wares to wait for any interested or merely curious children to wander over.

Ewan Corinsson

With one hand to Kellan's back, Ewan kept the copper headed boy balanced on his shoulders. The array of activities set up for Beltane lay out before the family and their token little one. Taneth and Avery were playing tag nearly the entire way there, which left Storm toting Taneth's toy horse and red headed doll, Lucky and Tara by name. Surveying the glen, he saw the smiles and laughter of other children and families punctuating the air in chorus with the music. The Baroness and family were not yet among them.

Kellan's body swayed one way and then another as he reached for out of reach bunting and sprays of flowers. "All right, all right." Ewan chuckled and swung the little boy down from his shoulders. A big smile and giggle out of Kellan brought a smile to his own face.

His freedom however, was brief, as Avery came over to tug and point towards a booth of treats, then signed, "Taneth and I are hungry!"

"Taneth and you? So the hearty lunch your mother made was just not enough for you?" Ewan teased, tugged at his beard to keep his smile hidden.

"I'm a growing boy." Avery defended himself, puffing up his chest.

"Mmhmm," Ewan set his hands on Avery's shoulders and turned him about towards the tent of treats. "Then we should get you two fed before you waste away. After, maybe Taneth will want to have her face painted or paint flower pots."

Avery wrinkled his nose at the very idea, but then saw one of the children getting a dragon painted on his face and grinned, signing and tugging on Storm. "Want my face painted with a dragon, too! Can I, please??

Kellan was making good time alongside them through the benefit of butterfly temporarily fluttering in the same direction. When it took a dodge to the right, Ewan reached out to take a hand and redirect Kellan's attention to the tables and activities around them.

There was a general sense of peaceful joy he could almost smell it was so thick in the air. With treats obtained and sticky grins in the making, they started their way along the circle of activity stations. Ewan took the toys from Storm so she might have her hands free and join in with the children.

Even with all the general merriment, there were habits that did not break. He was certain they did not break for his wife either. He scanned the area frequently, never less than a reserved smile and sometimes at the sight of a child laughing full with head tilted to the sky, the smile grew.
