The pit fires were dug on Thursday night and started in the early morning on Friday, just about dawn. Cows and wild boars were to be a large part of the Beltane festivities. Screened tents were pitched at the four corners of the Glen. It would give people the opportunity to choose their food without being bombarded by the local insect life. This was also done so the odors of the cooking fires wouldn't overpower the main area where the May Queen and her court would be assembling.

While Beltane was generally a Celtic festival, there was real no reason the food had to be limited to just one culture. Colleen was most familiar with the cultures of Earth, so, she started her plans with that. Each tent had a variety of appetizers, salads, side dishes, entr"es, and desserts. Many hands made the work lighter.

"Mother, what are you doing" Shouldn't you be separating these things by what belongs where or came from where?" Rhi asked. She was sixteen, tall and lovely.

"No, better this way." Collie shook her head and pointed at her youngest daughter, age 10, when she started diving for the dessert table. "You're here to help Diana. If you're going to be a hindrance you can go home before you were supposed to."

Diana gave her mother a grumpy look and the typical, "Aw, Moooooooooom!"

"We don't have time to waste! Let's get this finished."

Nicole, an eighteen year old redhead, was preparing menu boards in carefully scripted penmanship. She'd been taking a class in calligraphy and was showing off her skills. She hummed while she worked; it was the same tune that they had sung earlier in the day for the children.

Rhiannon peered over her sister's shoulder. "Shrimp, flounder, trout, oysters ....Nikki, you called in a favor, didn't you??"

"It's Beltane, oysters are an aphrodisiac." Nikki grinned at her sister. "Besides, I saw the ambrosia and the venison. You called in at least one!"

Collie listened as the girls bantered back and forth. It was times like this when she missed her own sister. It wasn't long before the menu boards were ready.

An assortment of soft drinks, wines, and liquors are also available.

Once everything was in place and people at their stations, Colleen went off to set up her own little corner of the festival. Having a large family had always been a blessing to her, especially on days like this.

((A note on the ambrosia. This is was a gift to Rhiannon Brock from her Olympian relatives in honor of the Beltane festival. The ambrosia was given a two fold blessing from Rhi's aunt, Aphrodite. It's an aphrodisiac as well as carrying a blessing of fertility. Just something to toss in for more play! :) ))
