May 1st, from 10:00 am until dusk

Childrens Day

During the day the Southern Glen is no less magical than it was the eve before. However, some of the more grown-up attractions, tastes and dalliances were closed for the day or unavailable on May 1st for Children's Day. The Beltane festival takes on a softer note, welcoming the children of Rhydin and their parents to take in the many attractions as well.

The Holi Festival, or Fesitval of colors is celebrated by throwing colored powder and colored water on one another. Children and parents interested in the Holi fun should try and wear white to show off the brilliant colors!

Doran Ilnaren

Date: 2011-05-01 15:52 EST
Doran let his sister Azure get a head start in the race down the path to the Southern Glen before heading after her, with the fosterlings of Stardreamer Manor close behind him and his parents, Phen and Ebon, trailing after. Amusement danced across the adults' faces as they watched their children and charges enter the Glen and pause, taking in the sights and sounds of Beltane's Childrens Day.

"I'm going to see the amimals!" said Doran as he headed towards the petting zoo. Once inside, the boy marvelled at the creatures all around him, playing with a pair of dragonettes one moment, then gently stroking a griffonling while he fed it the next. He didn't think it could be any more fun.

Then he saw the Pegasus race track.

"Oh, like Nightwind! Can I, Papa" I want to ride by myself!" Sapphire-blue eyes looked up at Ebon, who had caught up with him.

Ebon looked at the tracks for a moment, then nodded. "Of course!" And so Doran stood in line with the other children, waiting their turn for the next 'race' to begin.

Once his turn came, Doran mounted the pegasus with surprising grace, and patted his steed on the neck. "Hi! I'm Doran, and I'm happy to meet you!"

The pegasus whinnied in answer, while the handler looked on, more than a little impressed. "This is Featherflight, and he appreciates the greeting. Not all of you kids show that courtesy."

"Well, my dad has a pegasus too, and horses as well, so I know that they have feelings too. I've never ridden one by myself, though." Doran leaned forward a little. "You're not gonna drop me, I know that." The pegasus shook his head from side to side....and then the handler, seeing that all of the children were mounted and ready, raised the flag for a moment before dropping it down.

Doran whooped with glee as his pegasus took off at a run and then kicked off in a jump, bringing his wings down with a powerful beat that took them into the air. "Wheeeeeeeee!" Though they weren't flying all that high or fast, the boy didn't care; he was beyond joy now. Then they reached the turn and, with a graceful arc, headed back towards the finish line. All too soon Featherflight backwinged and settled down to the ground, trotting around the final turn to where the handlers and more children waited. Back at the start, Doran dismounted and then patted the pegasus' cheek. "Thank you for carrying me, and keeping me safe!"

Off to one side, Ebon smiled as his son ran over to him. "Did you have fun?"

"Yeah!" Doran looked around the Glen. "What else is there to do?"

That got a laugh from his father, and a chuckle from one of the Green Men nearby. "What isn't there?" the latter replied. "This is Beltane! There are wonders all around! Would you like something to drink, my lad?"

Doran took a cherry limeade, while his father had a raspberry iced tea, and together they set off through the Glen in search of more wonders to enjoy. Suddenly a call from one side caught their attention, and they looked to see Azure approaching, Phen close behind her with a juice glass in hand. "Doran, Doran! Look what I got!" The girl held up a basket with brightly-coloured eggs inside! "Come help me find more!"

Needing no further prompting, the boy took his sister's hand and they headed back to hunt for more eggs. Behind them, their parents grinned and shared a gentle kiss before following, hand in hand.

Lirssa Sarengrave

Date: 2011-05-02 17:54 EST
A passel" A gaggle" A herd" Twenty-three children arrived to the festivities from foster homes. Lirssa had made the plans for the group, and with Fionna's encouragement, included Nissa's family in the outing. To the outside it may have looked astounding and perhaps overwhelming the mass of chattering children ascending the low rise of the hill to the grounds. But like a well trained military troupe, they split off into three and fours, each with one of the older children as supervisor.

Lirssa had Raza in a hip sling, keeping him close but also keeping her hands free to guide four other children along as they visited the much cheered about petting zoo. A particularly expressive dragonette drew Raza's attention. With a smile and bow of her head, Lirssa held out her arm for the dragonette to land. With a flutter of delicately veined wings, the dragonette landed. "I think it is a girl, Raza." To which the dragonette snorted and a small puff of smoke curled from a nostril. "Or not."

The scales shifted a blue-indigo spectrum as the dragonette babbled squeaky noises to Raza who babbled back. Lirssa loved the way Raza laughed, always with a sigh at the end as if his belly was tired and very similar to Siva's purr.

"Lirssa, can we go to the slides and races area now?" Anasta asked. Her fingers were still in the fur of a direwolf pup.

Looking around the group, Lirssa accounted for all in her charge. "Is everyone ready to go' You don't even look like you're ready to leave that pup alone." With a lift of her arm, she sent the dragonette off to make dragon-eyes at another child.

"Yes, we're ready." Anasta nuzzled her nose against the direwolf's muzzle and then waved her hand above her head that gathered the other children close.

In passing groups, some children traded out with others so they could have just the day they wanted. When by the end of it, half the children had themselves covered in colored powder and everyone was laughing in past-exhaustion giggles, Lirssa knew it was time to head home. Raza snoozed up against her with a little paw drawn on his cheek, and the chattering group gave waves to the jugglers and started home.
