On the final stretch of the race, with glitter and powder flying through the air, one camera in particular zoomed in on the top three contraptions hurtling toward the finish line.

The Harker Mobile burst free of the final cloud of glitter and crossed first!

Very close on the Harker Mobile's tail was none other than....Ketch Creeley!

And in third place, with furry critters scampering madly behind Ketch, came the Squirrel Chariot!

Koyan finished dead last and had used up every ounce of ammunition on the racers and the crowds. He congratulated the three winners with handshakes and, of course, the mystery prizes.

In recognition of the Need for Speed, the prizes had been chosen accordingly:

1st place: Mairead Harker A Yamaha V-Max. Custom leather seats, purrs like a kitten. Koyan was a little hesitant to hand the keys over to a bunch of kids! http://o.aolcdn.com/dims-shared/dims3/GLOB/legacy_thumbnail/800x450/format/jpg/quality/85/http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2010/10/web630-5053913013f609eb46bcb.jpg

2nd place: Ketch Creeley Dunebuggy! Koyan admitted he hated to see this prize go. But if Ketch was ever up for a real race.... https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/7b/56/65/7b56654b5a032a6e3b00f1e05eccd1ec.jpg

3rd place: Thorn A shiny new...Vespa! He handed over the keys to Thorn with a cackle. Her squirrels were probably faster! http://www.totalmotorcycle.com/motorcycles/2016/2016-Vespa-Settantesimo-Primavera1.jpg

Koyan made the rounds with the other racers as well, passing out more handshakes and words of gratitude for the support while taking a much closer look at the contraptions owned by each. He teased the 'skeleton man' mercilessly, of course. After all, Mesteno was the entire reason the race existed in the first place.

He capped the event with a stunning display of fireworks to be enjoyed by all.

A week later, thanks to entrant fees, spectator tickets and donations (cash, wheelchairs etc), video sales and Ransom's Starlight Theatre promotion, Koyan was able to write a rather large check to benefit the Children's Hospital.

((Thanks so much to everyone who entered and/or spectated! It was fabulous to read all the creative posts. :) ))

Mairead Harker

A chorus of thank yous was given to Koyan as the Yamaha's keys were turned over to the trio. Maggie looked at the keyring in her hand then to her younger brother and sister in turn; grins and nods were exchanged. They had been in the race for the fun and to help the charity, but never expected to win! This prize had solved a little dilemma for them. The keys were turned over to their safety crew, Albert Hall.

Bertie had a puzzled look on his face as he stared at the keys. There was no denying he was happy to get that sweet machine to show off, but why him and not their father?

Catie giggled. "He lost his words!"

Rick chuckled. "Remember to wear a helmet!"

"Happy birthday a little early, Uncle Bertie," Maggie said with an impish smile.

"Righto! We're going to need an extra helmet!" Bertie grinned as he hugged each child in turn and thanked them.

The Redneck

Thorn may have broken a rib laughing. And though that was a distinct possibility with the way she was holding her belly and sides, her happy butt-wiggling-dance-of-victory was no less triumphant.

Sheer and simple stunned delight soaked every line of her, painted across her face.

The squirrels were, one and all, loosed from their traces to go scampering back to their forests and woods and lanes, except for the couple that decided to hang around for a ride.

Traces work very well as a momentary hitch you see, and the wheelchair soon enough became a trailer bedecked with few giant assed squirrels while the redneck put-putted her happy ass off for home. With princess waves and pin-up smiles .

Ketch Creeley

It'd be hard for even Ketch to say whether he'd attribute his placement to those last minute boosters or not wanting to be shown up by a bunch of squirrels and their merry blond ring-leader. (Not to mention that being trailed by rodents of an unusual size in the first place can cause a man to test the abilities of his machinery.)

Ketch didn't whoop or make a lot of commotion for his win, but there was a satisfied curve to his mouth, and he congratulated the other winners too, eyeing the prizes as they were awarded. In that regard, he'd not known what to anticipate. Maybe a watch or a gift certificate to a local eatery. So when Koyan presented a dune buggy instead, Ketch served the guy with a vehemently skeptical look before a "No shit?" filled in as expression of thanks. He walked the length of the buggy, checking out the set-up, and he left one of his business cards with Koyan, gladly taking the bait on the possibility of a future race.
