ABOUT THE STARLIGHT THEATRE The Starlight Theatre is a unique Rhydin treasure with a vibrant past stretching back more than seventy-five years. After closing its doors in 2007, it sat empty until it was bought at auction in 2014. It reopened in early spring 2015, fully restored and with new management.

The Starlight's fa"ade reflects its heritage with a carefully preserved 1940s-style marquee that stands more than three stories tall. The interior continues the retro theme with lush red velvet seating, restored woods, geometric carpeting and tile, and gilt accents.

Koyan chose a most unusual time to visit the theatre. He picked the dates with the Japanese thrillers, prepared to lounge, drink and overdose on blood and gore.

Heavy emphasis on drink. He imbibed one after the other, until all the dialogue ran together in a perpetual blur.

Of course he sat all the way in the back, sunglasses over his eyes, boots propped up on the back of the seat in front of him.

By the time he departed, he'd consumed more drinks than he could count and was, mostly, walking in a straight line.

Mostly.

Minoko Funaki

It wasn't often that the two sisters did much of anything together outside of the occasional hostile dinner. But once Minoko heard about the Starlight Theatre's Nightmares in Japanese event she thought it would be just the thing for a fun night out that didn't involve fighting about husbands or any mentions whatsoever of the legendary Void.

She picked up Motoko around five, and the twins made it to the theater just in time to pay the matinee price. They settled into their seats with Minoko holding a themed cocktail in each hand. Motoko would have normally been one to judge, but it wasn't often that she got a night away from the kids so she did something similar, picking out two of the theatre's draft beers to try. They made it through Ringu wide-eyed and captivated, both picking up on the message that seemed to hint at a fear of technology. More drinks were ordered during the gap between movies. Next came Ju-On: The Grudge, and by that point the sisters were too drunk and restless to take any movie seriously. Motoko cackled at inappropriate times. Minoko tried to shush her in between laughs of her own with little to no success.

Various glares were ignored when they left the double feature as soon as that second set of credits started to roll. Minoko's cheeks were red with embarrassment, but Motoko couldn't have cared less. Some Japanese was mumbled under her breath. Minoko smiled. It translated roughly into, "Japanese people are allowed to laugh at Japanese movies."

Shortly after the first film started, Ransom came to sit down next to Koyan. He didn't speak, but he kept the Turk company through the ghosts and gore, and like Koyan, he drank ? and drank some more. He drank enough that his metabolism started having trouble keeping up and he ended up with a decent buzz.

When it was all finished, he saw Koyan out'still with minimal conversation. How much was said was up to the Turk. Ransom just knew that sometimes it helped to have someone to drink with and sit with.

On his way back inside, he gave the twin sisters a wink as they were coming out of the double-feature and wished them a good night and a hope that they would someday come back to the theatre.
