Spring has sprung and Beltane is upon us! To celebrate, the city is hosting a week-long Beltane Open Air Festival! Check in for events, vendors, arts & crafts, activities, street performers, games, and sporting events. All events are taking place in Elsewhere Park unless otherwise noted.

Vendors/Booths/Events: All Week Long

Le Carnaval de la Vie (Monday-Friday; 12 PM to 2 AM)

'Special-teas' by Panacea Selling fresh flower garlands and crowns, seeds for your every need, and Aoife Duggan's specialty tea blends.

Faerie Fusion Faerie style cuisine made by Nina, the owner of Faerie Fusion in Little Elfhame.

wisp #6.1: Hats Off to Beltane! Andressa Sugimoto Moraes and the rest of the wisp crew will be bringing back some of their limited edition hats and caps from past wisp collections, as well as an exclusive baseball cap dedicated to Beltane!

WestEnd Medical Services The clinic's festival booth will be open throughout the week staffed at all times with a medical professional including regular visits from founding doctor, Eva Luna. Staff will be available to answer questions on all medical topics including those particularly germane to the Beltane festival such as interspecies safe sex or how to avoid unwanted love spells and potions. The booth will also be offering free condoms and contraception, drug safety checks, and bottled non-Rhy"Din water.

Feygarten The beer hall and garden will be serving a mix of local standards, crafts beers, and foreign spirits in their booth for the week. There are picnic tables around the booth for those who want to sit, enjoy, and watch passing entertainers while they drink.

Face Painting From the simple to the elaborate, face painting. And face painting how-to.

Matadero Meats Pig roast, ribs, and pulled pork.

PUBLIC: an Art Gallery Festival attendees are invited to join PUBLIC in a Beltane-themed art project! Several local artists will be on hand to demonstrate and guide participants in a paper-cutting art project, including a kid-friendly option. Participants can choose from flower, fish, or butterfly patterns in a multitude of colors. For a suggested donation of three coppers, the resulting project can be enchanted to bring the paper flower, fish, or butterfly to life for the duration of the Beltane festival. All proceeds will be matched and donated to the Rhy"Din Artists Collective. In addition, the booth will feature paper art by the on-hand artists available for purchase.

Upcycling For Home and Fun Along with a few demonstrations, and a couple of hands on projects, pamphlets are available. Each pamphlet has 222 glossy photos, and step-by-step instructions on the projects shown, as well as tips and pointers for branching out. Projects: suitcase table, orange rind oil lamp, paper roses; paint sample clock; pillowcase garment bags; wine, or booze bottle chandelier; denim bangles; tee shirt skirt; globe bowl; cool tee bag; book page garland.

Container Gardening for Small Spaces From pallets transformed into a pick-as-you-go salad, to soda bottles arranged as rain chains, to ninety-nine cent store flip flops and margarine tubs wrapped in twine. From just a few herbs in a window box, to a forest of edible vegetation, this hands-in-the-dirt how-to with easy to remember and follow instructions and ideas can really get the juices going.

Hair Braiding Booth Grace Cassidy of Hair or Dye Salon in the Marketplace will be setting up a Hair Braiding booth.

My Blooming Head Hear ye, Hear ye! Come one, Come all! Be sure to stop by Matilda's 'My Blooming Head' booth and learn how to create a floral hair wreath for Beltane! Not artistic you say' No worries! Once again Matilda will be selling beautiful pre-made head wreaths for men, women and children during the Open Air Festival!

Special hand fasting and/or wedding head wreaths and bouquets also available!

Cost: Accepting donations of any amount. All proceeds go to the Rhy'Din Fire Brigade!

Bandages and Bottles Stop by the booth for a wonderful (and somewhat strange) assortment of items. Bandages and Bottles will be your one-stop-shop for just about anything you can think of: mundane items, gag and prank items, pets, pet supplies, trinkets, rings, weapons, armor, miscellaneous magic items, potions, candy, brews, and food. Check out the full list of items available at the booth!

Kites Ebon and the Stardreamer fosterlings (the older ones, at least) will be selling paper kites. There will be pre-made kites available as well as the materials for people to make (and fly!) their own.

Make Your Own Flower Jewelry Workshop Hosted by Flora and Blossom from The Salon at Little Elfhame. The ladies will be teaching a workshop on how to make fashion accessories from freshly cut flowers for people to wear to the festivities on Sunday and Saturday.

Horse/Pony Rides Governor Ebon is offering horse and pony rides, courtesy of the stables at Stardreamer Manor.

Orchids Eregor will have epiphytic orchid "air plant" baskets available for sale in a myriad variety of colors.

Wind Chimes Hephaestus will be selling hanging wind chimes and clockwork flowers.

Glassware Ciarth Whitemane will have handcrafted glasses and goblets available, with images of trees, flames, or fairy wings etched in the glass.

Wandering Musicians Velen and Doran Ilnaren will be wandering the festival playing tunes, with the former on guitar/vocal and Doran playing a tin-whistle flute.

Weddings by Wendy Wendy of the Multiverse Chapel will be available all week long at the festival for any weddings or handfastings. Missed your chance Sunday night' Worry not! Wendy has you covered.

On Sunday, the redneck definitely joined the festivities.

Barefeet in the greening grass, she danced 'round the May Pole with everyone else, her sunny smile and warming laughter unrestrained and merry.

The evening saw her at the Fires, celebrating in her way with wicked delight.

Monday, she made the most of the afternoon in one trip, and one stop. The Kissing Booth. The Empress' endeavor for helping those youths who fall through the many cracks in Rhy'din is one very near and dear to Thorn's heart. As such, the woman paid her coin (quite a lot of it) and took her place in line.

When it was her turn she gave a back-room smile and leaned in. Let the tips of the fingers of her left hand rest, soft as a butterfly's breath at the hinge of Jewell's jaw and kissed her. Far from chaste, the kiss brought to mind the slow, tantalizing sip of a favored wine from a gem encrusted chalice. Savoring and deep and thorough. Tender and cherishing. With no aggression or possession. Hints and half-made promises. Smoke and building heat.

At their parting, she pressed the tip of her tongue to her own lips, as though to seal the fae woman's taste to her skin and memory.

With a wink and another of those smiles, she wandered off to the PUBLIC booth.

Monday. May 2, 2016.

Eye witness reports claim to have seen an elusive Salvador Delahada stopping by to watch the Fire Whip Sword Show, and reportedly holding up a horrifically bedazzled phone to record some video with. In his possession was also a giant stuffed dragon, won from the Carnaval de la Vie, which he was reported to have been seen carrying off to the east of the city.

Later he was spotted checking in on the Matadero Meats booth to grab some ribs to-go and see how things were going before heading back to the carnival.

Scrambling to get there on time after a most unforgettable Beltane at the Fire-Lighting Ceremony, Grace arrived with her own newly-aqua locks pulled up in an elaborately braided style. She immediately got to work representing Hair or Dye Salon in the Braiding Bar Tent.

Though she spent most of the day crafting gorgeous braids for the Festival Goers, Grace was able to slip away for a little while to check out some of the other booths. She picked up some delicious smelling tea from Panacea, picked up lunch from Matadero Meats and even stole a little time to make herself some flower jewelry with Flora and Blossom.

As day faded into night, Grace met up with a certain Gypsy King to catch, among other things, the Paper Lantern Send-off at Carnaval de la Vie.

On Tuesday the redneck skipped and danced her way 'round the Festival after dropping off her entry for the baking contest.

With great enjoyment she visited the Costume Craft Stall to play at putting together a head-dress and wing ensemble. Probably wound up inciting a glitter/doo-dad/decoration fight, and definitely hung around to handle the clean up.

When evening came, she headed for Twilight Isle to watch the Tournament.

With two of her children grown and moved out of the house, another on the cusp of womanhood (and wanting very much to spend as little time around her mother as possible), Charlotte was left with only Megan as her companion for the day. And what better way to spend it than to visit town for the festivities?

The mother/daughter duo woke up bright and early to bake some treats for the contest (blackberry and cherry pies, respectively) and after delivering them for judging, spent the rest of the day walking around.

They got their lunch from Matadero's booth, then buzzed like bees on over to get their faces painted, hair braided, and rounded out the afternoon with a pony ride for the ten year old.

May 3rd!

Some people have purse dogs. Dris has a bird he carries tucked under his arm. On the second day of Beltane, he was seen strolling through Elsewhere Park with his best crow Handel in his company.

The very first thing our dear bard did was stop by the Panacea stall again for some of Aoife's special-tea. He also picked up a collection of flower crowns, many in number. Afterward, he swung by the Feygarten to drink! He hopped on at least one of the Hay Rides, possibly more, and stopped by the Baking Contest just to get a whiff of what was good.

He and Handel were seen pausing to watch and applaud all the various entertainers. At one point he even challenged the jugglers to a juggle-off, taking part in the show himself. Once he'd exhausted himself on all the fun to be had here, he and his crow were seen heading off to the Carnaval de la Vie.

Though her nights were busy with the Spring Gala, Josie made sure to stop by the festivities to visit the Shanachie's Costume Craft Stall to show her support for the hard working ladies in the costume department. Without their dedication and tireless hard work, the shows at the theater could not possibly come to life in such a beautiful way. Before her visit was over, they made sure she did not leave without a flower head piece and a pair of wings!

Thorn showed up bright and early to put her name down for the mud wrestling. In between bouts she cheered in a bright, spirited manner for the other competitors. During her bouts she wound up an unabashed muddy mess, and loved every moment of it.

Dressed more "gypsy" than either of the days before, Grace was delighted to see Jewel, Sapphire, Claire and Claire's adorable twins, and Eden in the booth today.

It seemed like a lot of people were getting dressed up for the Vivant Showcase at Carnaval de la Vie this afternoon, so Grace found herself putting together some more elaborate braids for the occasion.

On her break, she stopped by the Facepainting Booth to have a butterfly added to her cheek, and My Blooming Head to get some pretty red flowers for her hair. She also bought a couple of kites for the Camp Kids.

Then she met up with Mark to go take in the Vivant Showcase for themselves. After all the buzz she'd heard from the day's patrons, Grace couldn't wait to see what all the fuss was about!

Another day of Beltane, another day of sneaking out of work early!

Her first stop was to Grace's braiding booth to get her hair done, SO PRETTY! She could barely keep still for the braiding but she loved the finish product.

Next it was on to Panacea to get herself a flower crown which she promptly bobby pinned into place so it wouldn't fall off while she went bouncing around.

She happened to just be in time to see the Shanachie Theater Company's Chorus flash mob, her eyes wide and excited!

Then after eating her way through the rest of the Festival, she headed on over towards Carnaval to catch the Showcase!

Thursday. May 5, 2016.

Though he spent most of his time at the Carnaval de la Vie in Cane's company, there was about an hour of the day in which Salvador broke off to wander on his own. He ventured over to Elsehwere Park and spent some time making a paper kite. While he was there, he checked in on the Matadero Meats stall again to make sure everything was still running smoothly. On his way out, he stopped to watch the knife thrower's show.

Azure accompanied her mother, a few of the teachers, and some students to the festival. First stop? Why Hair or Dye Braiding booth, of course. Azure sat very still while getting the fancy fishtail braid done. As still as she could with Olivia breaking away from Phen every few minutes to climb on her big sister's lap.

A few of the kids took part in the pie eating contest, and Azure just giggled to see them covered with sticky sweet. From there, the group moved on to the carnival for the afternoon.

As one of the volunteers from the Shanachie, Yasmin visited Rhy"Din's orphanages on May 5th and 6th to perform and teach on behalf of the Shanachie STARS program. Being her wild and fun loving self, she didn't exactly show it, but speaking to the orphans was very important to her. Though she didn't publicize it as much as she did other aspects of her life, Yasmin was somewhat of an orphan herself before she was taken in by her kind and crazy circus family. It was no wonder she turned out the way she did.

The Hair or Dye Booth experienced a veritable flood of lovely visitors on Thursday.

First there was her friend Saila. The long legged teen with the vivid locks had done some hair modeling for her in the past, and was all too happy to show off Grace's work for her while she manned the Kiss and Tell booth over at the Carnaval de la Vie.

Grace was thrilled to meet and do braids for Thorn and Dia, Elena, and Azure. Such lovely ladies, all, and a joy to work with — even with a smaller child continually climbing on Azure!

On her break, Grace stopped to watch the Wandering Musicians for a time, and then made her way to Public to make a cut out butterfly. She also bought a beautiful piece from the gallery while she was there. Heading over to the Panacea booth again to purchase herself a fresh flower garland crown, she then got lunch from the Matadero Meats Booth, and engaged the Improv Court Song Composer to give her a song about hair braiding while she ate.

Then it was back to the booth to finish off another lovely day of braiding.

Friday—Jewell

Jewell attended the festival without Sapphire on Friday since the teen felt sick from eating too much pie on Thursday. She dragged Rayvinn along instead to volunteer at the Kids of Summer Dunking Booth for part of the afternoon.

Then they visited the booths serving alcohol. All the booths serving alcohol.

Arriving on the Festival Grounds a few minutes late, Grace rushed to get the Hair or Dye Braiding Bar as quickly as she could.

About mid day, her most awesome pizza fairy Serah stopped by the booth as promised. Grace used some of the blossoms she'd purchased from My Bloomin' Head to whip up a gorgeous braided design for her candy-floss pink hair.

After promising to come see her at the Sassy Owl, Grace bid goodbye to her new friend.

The tiny stylist was temporarily starstruck when, for a heartstopping moment or two, Grace thought she might actually get to do a braid for one of the stars of Wednesday's night's Vivant Showcase, but alas he was pulled away at the last second.

Her disappointment was short-lived, however, when a certain not-King made good on his promise to come visit her at the Festival. Together they checked out some of the booths Grace hadn't gotten to yet, marveling over Eregor's epiphytic orchid "air plant" baskets and the lovely stemware in Ciarth Whitemane's glassware shop. Finally they headed over to wisp, where it's possible Grace got a new hat.

Then it was off to get in line for a wildly romantic sunset hot air balloon ride. Neither of the gypsies had ever been on one before or even really seen one up close, so it was an especially gorgeous first experience for the both of them.

Once the balloon ride was done, it was time to head back over to the Carnaval de la Vie one last time to see the fireworks display.

Friday was likely the day that Claire was looking forward to the most out of the entire week. Hot air balloon rides for Beltane and fireworks thanks Carnaval de la Vie? Double score.

A day off! Benjamin showed up with Star in tow, the big Vanner stallion following him around like a dog. Garland making was a bust, as Star would rather eat the flowers than to let Benjamin make anything of them.

But they'd cheerfully join the hunt, though Star wasn't wearing anything more than his Batman collar, and Benjamin in jeans, boots, and a t-shirt. Star was well able to keep up with the pack, but they'd break away from catching any foxes.

They might even facilitate the escape of the foxes....

Thorn might be able to keep the pair out of trouble.

The last day of the Festival was an especially busy one for Grace. Lots of people at the booth getting ready for the Good Faeries Ball that evening.

She watched the people racing past for the Scavenger Hunt, and dutifully gave out rubber bands for those who asked.

Because Grace had a real hard time saying no, she stayed until the very last person who wanted their hair done for the ball was complete. Then it was off to get herself ready, catch up with the Gypsy King, and head over to the festivities, too!

Rena spent part of each morning this past week wandering the booths and events set up for Beltane, getting inspirations for ideas for the shop-from candle colors and scents to stained glass kits.

The last day of the Carnival, she spent talking to the vendors-some placing orders for her candle shop.

Friday, May 6th (morning/afternoon)

Josette took some time to wander the booths of Beltane Friday morning before her volunteer visit to the Seven Towers Orphanage. Her first stop was the Panacea's 'Special-teas' booth to inquire about a good tea for fatigue and one for calm. Several beautiful blends were purchased as well as some flower crowns for a few of the girls at the Shanachie who were not able to make it over to the festival.

Her next stop was the Hair or Dye Salon's Hair Braiding Booth to pause and admire Grace's finesse with the lovely locks of its visitors. She saw the booth was very busy, so Josie complimented her on her beautiful work and plucked up a card, while making a mental note to visit the salon in the near future.

She was especially excited to visit the PUBLIC gallery's booth to donate and create a colorful array of paper butterflies, and could barely contain herself when she was told they could be enchanted to come to life.

Later that day, rather than teaching the children of the orphanage how to relev?, the afternoon was spent listening to them talk about their dreams and fluttering freely with the butterflies as she encouraged the children to dance to the music in whatever way moved them. She was more than happy to teach them some specific ballet moves if they asked, but in the ballerina's mind, the butterflies were far better teachers than she would ever be.
