13 April 2018 AM - Setting Up
"Maggie, I could run this booth," Pearl said with a bright grin on her face.
"Thanks, Pearl, but you're already on making change detail," Maggie said as she wrote down a few notes. "Besides, you have the band stuff to keep up with.” She adjusted the brim of her hat. It sported an embroidered kelly green clover on it. The t-shirt she wore was emblazoned with Clover in Chief. "Besides, I want to be here to talk to people and sign a few pictures. Mama, Aunt Rhi, and Gran said they would help, too."
"Aunt Rhi is a few steps ahead of you. She already signed some pictures. You did remember that she's also working the Gardenhome Booth, too, right?"
“Of course, I did.” Maggie nodded.
“You could have had the concert and all today.” Pearl adjusted the Sports Memorabilia sign over the booth.
“Have you looked at the calendar"” She gave her elder counterpart an incredulous look with one brow slightly lowered. “I’m not tempting fate on that one. No, thank you!” Her ponytail shook along with her head.
“What’s going on over there"” Pearl gestured to a large tented area on the other side of the square.
“That’s for Miss Eden to set up her dueling rings when she’s ready. I’ve got a crew on hand when she needs them.” Maggie smiled brightly. “Tahlia’s handling betting on duels.”
“Maggie, you normally don’t have dueling tied to Children’s Day, why this year"” It was Pearl’s turn to do the eyeballing.
“Because, it ties everything together. Lirssa was the Baroness of Old Market and helped the kids in Rhydin. I got the idea of having betting to raise money when I was over at The Hold. She had lots of friends, grown ups and kids, so that’s a good way to include more of them. Lots of things have betting and all”
“It’s not a bad idea.”
“There’s at least one new kid dueling this year. Niko, Kruger Allen’s son.”
“How does it feel to not be the youngest anymore?” Pearl smiled thoughtfully.
“Pretty good, actually. That’s what I’ve hoping for. I broke some barriers that Mama and Aunt Rhi didn’t. I can’t wait to see what Niko does.”
“He might opt to only do things like Madness, you know.” Pearl had a challenging expression on her face.
“That’s his choice to make and his chance to take, “ Maggie countered. “The doorway is open and he walked through. That’s what matters to me.” The conversion faded into the buzzing of other voices.
