Midsummer Mayhem: The Thinning of the Veil (IC Play Along!)

Across three weeks (beginning Wednesday, June 14th and ending Wednesday, July 5th), the veil between RhyDin and Faerie will be extremely thin and absolutely gone in places. It will start out slow on June 14th, reach a frenzy on the Summer Solstice on June 21st, and then slowly resolve after July 5th. As a result, there will be plenty of mayhem to enjoy! Keep an eye on this thread for board events, vapored events, and upcoming live events.

((Check out the OOC information thread regarding how to play along here as well as the IC story post thread here! If you would like to plan an event related to this SL, please message me and I can include it in this thread! There's a lot of potential for different board and live events during this SL. Note: All the events are just jumping off points and no one is limited to involvement in this SL based solely on these posts/events. It really is open to do what you'd like (within reason).))

The Thinning of the Veil Those sensitive to it will notice that the Veil (separating this world with the realms of Faerie) is already becoming thin over a week before the Summer Solstice and there has been a heavier trickle than usual of fair folk entering the city from different points.

Technology Disruption Although it is a full week before the Summer Solstice, people across the city are experiencing disruptions to technology. In some areas, technological devices and services have been completely cut off and rendered unusable. The disturbances vary in intensity and area of effect, with reports flooding in of the problems afflicting whole neighborhoods yet sometimes only one flat in a building while the one next door is completely fine. It is unclear whether these problems will resolve themselves quickly or become worse.

((The disruption has the ability to affect all "modern" devices/services, but you get to decide what it does/doesn't affect. Not sure what constitutes "modern" and should be included? Neither am I. Anything from the Industrial Revolution onward or things that involve complicated mechanics can be considered subject to trouble as a result of the thinning of the veil. If you don't think it would work in Faerie, it can have trouble working in RhyDin. The technology disruptions should last the duration of the SL but there is more than enough wiggle room that people can continue on with their play, tech undisturbed.))

An Influx of Fae and Faeries There have been reports of fae and faeries of all different sorts crossing into RhyDin in greater number this week. Preliminary reports include an increasingly large number of nymphs luring people into amorous engagements with them; garden gnomes coming to life and biting people's ankles; spriggans and trolls in basements; phouka impersonating household pets or animals in shops; and leprechauns laying claim to pots of gold from local banks. Several ads have appeared in various newspapers offering at home help (notably cooking and cleaning) from an influx of brownies. Shopkeepers and (as well as stay at home wives and husbands) have also noticed that, when they come in each morning, much of their work has already been completed by household elves. Conversely, there have been reports of boggarts taking up residence in different houses and wrecking them each night while the family sleeps. Those who live near RhyDin parks and even community gardens have reported wild, drunken parties thrown by different groups of satyrs occurring every night. Those visiting cemeteries should beware as there have been sluagh hanging around the graves. Bodies of water throughout the city have new warning signs: BEWARE THE FAE. There have been harrowing accounts of kelpies drowning people in lakes and ponds after luring them to ride on their backs. There have also been reports of mer-people and water sprites causing mischief.

((All of these things do not have to happen at once but they are some of the things that will be taking place over the next three weeks. These are progressive problems that will get worse leading up to and following the solstice, and they are just some of the problems RhyDin will be experiencing. These are just ideas not rules anyone has to stick to. Feel free to make up your own issues relating to the influx of fae.))

Pixie Problems Several flutters of pixies have crossed over into RhyDin. Relatively harmless, they have been enjoying themselves by playing pranks and being generally mischievous. Some of the charms/pranks/trouble attributed to them: *Charming people into a variety of different moods (said charms have lasted anywhere from hours to days) *Causing people to lose their memories of the last 1-4 days *Causing people to temporarily turn into stone every time they venture out into direct sunlight *Stealing random items (especially sparkly and shiny ones)

((Feel free to expand on the type of problems one might experience when encountering a flutter of pixies.))

Wishes Granted Different fae creatures are offering to grant wishes to those who encounter or catch them. Many wishes appear to immediately come true but also come with a caveat or are taken too literally: a change of appearance doesn't last or changes another part of the person for the worse (ex: "I want blue hair" grants the person blue hair on their behind); the riches requested are stolen from the local bank or glamoured leaves; the gift of magic comes but the person has no clue how to use it safely.

Midsummer Park Party The Midsummer Party in the Park has been given new flavor with the continued disruptions in technology and the influx of fae in the area. A stronger than usual disruption to technology is rolling through RhyDin on Monday night. People are encouraged to get out of their homes (where the lights aren't working anyway, the AC keeps sputtering out, and the TV is all static) and come out to party in the park instead! The Party in the Park is the place to be to keep cool and be entertained. Games and dueling, friends to chat with (or shoot water guns at), and beer and booze to quench the thirstiest party-goer. At the party, several dryads are seen emerging from trees to join in the festivities; pixies and sprites dash through the air causing mischief; and a troop of brownies shows up to help set up and then clean up the party. Satyrs join the revel, desiring to dance with party-goers and playing merry tunes on their flutes alongside the musicians. Butterfly sprites can be seen fluttering over the nearby garden. Several fae show an interest in learning how to play outdoor twister and the other games available at the party. Unfortunately, helpful, Seelie fae are not the only ones in the park this evening. There's a pack of banshees on the prowl and several bogies making mischief. There is at least one kelpie in the pond trying to lure those who get too close to ride on its back. There are a few tricksy fae tying shoelaces together and attempting to mess with those dueling by jinxing or otherwise distracting them (chances are they likely bet against the ones they are troubling!). ((The Party in the Park is tomorrow night! Come out for live play related to the Midsummer Mayhem SL.))

Summer Solstice: The Faerie Wyldes

The summer solstice is here and the veil has completely disappeared in places! The disruptions to technology are growing, covering a wider area and becoming more severe than before. More and more fae are pouring over the border between the realms, and citizens from RhyDin can easily cross into Faerie if they so desire. The biggest change that the summer solstice is bringing to RhyDin is the sudden growth of the Faerie Wyldes. Forest and jungles are sprouting up everywhere (we mean everywhere; have you seen the roof of the RhyDin Imperial Hotel?) and fields of flowers are appearing in the most inopportune places (like the parking lot of ShopSmart). Additionally, whole parts of Faerie are crossing over into RhyDin while parts of the city are disappearing into Faerie. The Wyldes are growing all over the city, overtaking buildings and roadways, and there doesn't seem to be any way to stop them. Some people have attempted to burn down the Wyldes, but the Wyldes are fighting back! http://tventhusiast.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/korra-vines-1024x577.png

Magic Gone Mad With the failing of the veil, magic has gone a little mad throughout RhyDin. Many citizens are reporting an increase in strength and range of their magical abilities. The very air seems rife with available mana energy in places, and the ley lines throughout the city seem to be supercharged. Mages should be careful with their spellwork over the next few days as the results could be stronger than usual. Even mundane objects and items appear to be infused with a touch of magic. There have been stories of garden daisies singing in the morning and a toaster oven predicting the weather. Mirrors are talking back, brooms are sweeping the floors all on their own, and there was an unfortunate incident involving kitchen knives. We don't know what will happen next! ((This is open to interpretation for people to use/ignore as they would like.))

The Glamour of the Sidhe Not only have the fae been making their way into RhyDin, but the gentry have shown their lovely faces as well. Several groups of sidhe have made their way into RhyDin after the failing of the veil at Midsummer. Some are charming people, leading them back to Faerie for keeps. Others are ensnaring them with their glamour and using them for their own fun, games, and amusement. If you or someone you love has been bespelled with glamour, please seek assistance immediately.

Changelings Hospitals, orphanages, and daycares are being encouraged to set up protective spells, put up iron wards, and line their doorways and windows with salt because some of the fae and faerie visitors in RhyDin are stealing newborn babes and young children. In their place, they are leaving changelings and fetches. One hospital in Old Town reported that sometime last night, the entire nursery of newborn babies had been whisked away. Dawn's first light revealed bundles of sticks left in their places.

The Wild Hunt

The Wild Hunt has been seen racing through the streets of RhyDin pursuing who and what they please.

The descriptions vary with some of the details being chalked up to exaggeration and gossip. The group is made up of fearsome faerie nobles with tall helms, flowing hair, and beautiful armor. They ride the streets of RhyDin on horses who have no parallel, hunting the greatest game: pretty mortals who make such enjoyable sport! They steal them away to Underhill or ride them down on their steeds or let their awful hounds tear them apart as they laugh, bright and clear and terrible.

Others insist they've seen a different group on the Hunt: a half dozen terrible spirits come back from the dead, predicting calamity or causing death for anyone who dares to look upon them.

((There can be multiple groups of the Wild Hunt running through RhyDin. As always, this playable just gives some general ideas on what could be happening.))

Lost in Faerie

Ever since the veil failed on the summer solstice people have been getting lost in Faerie. Some stumble into the Never Never by accident. Others go on purpose. A few never return.

When (if) they return, they may find a few days have passed in RhyDin or even years! Alternatively, some have reported living out lifetimes Underhill only to return to RhyDin and find only a few hours have passed.

Trouble Brewing at Local Gathering Spots

Assorted groups of fae (redcaps, trolls, orcs, pixies, boggarts) have been seen lurking around the Red Dragon Inn, Outback, the Marketplace, and in the shadows of the Arena and Annex. Their intent' INVASION!

Theories as to why they are going to invade vary: they have been deeply insulted by several patrons or have suffered some perceived slight (ex: no one told Bob the Boggart that they liked his new haircut and now vengeance will be his); they think these places look like fun and no one has invited them, according to fae custom, to join in; someone told them there was hidden treasure; a true love for wanton destruction and mischief.

They are only waiting for the most opportune time!

((Room a little quiet' In need of some wacky fun" Have a hero that hasn't saved people in a while" Play out a fae invasion of your favorite RP setting! There are no planned invasions happening at this time, but all these fae are NPCs available to use, abuse, or ignore.

If you would like to play out an invasion by any of the types of fae listed (or ones that aren't) in any of the locations listed (or another location) please feel free and enjoy! You can even make screen names for these characters and attack attack attack!))
