"Seaside Beach, a haven for families out for a little sea and sun, but not this day. I'm Marlena Simmons, and this is News 5."
"In the early hours, officials cordoned off the popular beach at Seaside turning away ocean enthusiast and surfer alike."
"Something was wrong with the water..." said Sargent Nathan Jakowski a twenty year veteran of The Watches shore patrol. "Wave after wave rolled in red as a jar of Maraschino cherries."
"Red Tide." Marlena intones as the camera zooms in on the waves breaking red on the beach.
"I got the call early, the sun had barely hit my window." A bearded man appears on camera, the words beneath his face name him as Professor Robert Pullman, Marine Biologist. "I called my team together, fortunately they're used to be woken at ungodly hours. But by the time we got down here we realized that there was more going than an Algae Bloom."
"It...it was horrible..." Angeline Moffat was the name on the screen, below a face that was clearly no stranger to sun, or time. "I live down a bit, in one of the little cottages that have been here since I was a girl. So when I saw the watch, and the tape...well I snuck down a side path, just to see. The...everything is red." Eyes wide, she pointed a veined hand toward the still rolling waves. "Pieces everywhere...just this massive...thing..."
Marlena appeared on the screen once more. "That massive thing which Angeline saw..." The camera panned past her went out of focus for a moment before clearing up on a large torpedo like form. "A humpback whale, and that was only the first to arrive. They kept coming....for another forty five minutes." The camera pans further to reveal rows of beached whales from varying species.
"We've seen this kind of thing before, though usually it's all one kind and never all juveniles, even the rare Albino Orcinis Orca is far from adulthood." Another face appeared on the screen along with the name Rosemary Deter, aquatic researcher. "At first we thought it was just a matter of them needing to be aided back into the water. I had Bill on the phone with a number of large equipment leasing companies. This...this was not what we expected."
"It's carnage...sheer carnage." The face of Bill Harris was now framed in the camera. "There's more than two dozen bodies laying out there, but it's clear there's more going on. There are still pieces washing ashore...I've never...There's just no words. Keep your eyes on the water, you can see easily at any time a dozen dorsal fins in the surf...who knows how many more out there that you can't see."
Once again the camera pans over the water revealing a number of triangular shaped fins.
"We know it's the seasonal migration, the whales are just doing what they've always done, no....the erratic behavior is in the sharks." Robert Pullman was back on camera. He turns and points along the horizon. "The feeding is good for the whales along this stretch, and they stay close to shore in order to avoid the large predatory fish. This season....for now at least it isn't safe out there. Can you imagine if that scene was full of people instead?"
"Gruesome...grizzly." Tom Clemens third shift watch commander. It'd be a lot worse if we let folks down there. Hel...eck, right now it's bad enough. I don't think you could do more damage by driving a riding lawnmower through a Royal Donald's Play Place at lunchtime....on a Sunday."
Marlena was now centered in the camera. "Officially the Seaside Beach has been closed. Experts in Marine behavior believe that as the migration moves northwards, the shark population will diminish, and likely their ferocious tendencies."
The Camera stays on Marlena, but there's a voice over going through the speakers. "There's just too many of them, the competition for survival has reached a savage pitch and their taking it out on anyone or anything that dares enter their water."
"I'm Marlena Simmons, News 5, at Seaside Beach. Back to you Matt." The image on the screen pulls back and Matt Cavanaugh, news 5's anchorman comes into view.
"Thank you Marlena..." He turns to look at his co-anchor Chelsea Long. "Wow....I mean....Chelse....that was a whale of a story...More after these messages."
