What's Happening in the Glen?

Something has settled in the Southern Glen. From the city gates, you can see the gentle rise of smoke from small chimneys, smell the charming mix of pine needles, sawdust, pastry and pies. You may even be able to hear the little taps of hammer on wood or anvil, and the cheerful laughter of little people going about their daily business. Come closer, and you will find a little slice of the North Pole tucked away between snow laden trees and the frozen lake.

No, Santa Claus hasn't come to town yet. But Mrs Claus and a little band of elves have made Rhy'Din their center of operations for Winterfest. The workshop rings with the busy sounds of toymaking, the kitchen is overflowing with goodies that need decorating, the reindeer are restless in their stables, Christmas trees need a good home, and right in the center stands a very special letterbox. The Glen is alive with the sights and sounds and smells of Christmas, and everyone is welcome to visit!

((The Grotto and workshop is open for free play all through WinterFest - enjoy the setting and don't forget to post your WinterFest wishes dropped in the magic mailbox here! Super-special wish letters writers may get a surprise visit!))

Something is happening in Rhy'Din's Southern Glen. A little slice of Christmas has descended upon the snow-covered clearings, and everyone is welcome to come inside! From the little cottage with its fairylit windows and snow-covered roof, to the stables close by where reindeer pass back and forth, to the little forest of beautiful Christmas trees just waiting to be cut and taken home, anyone would be forgiven for thinking that this is where Santa always lives! Why not come along and take part, as Christmas settles in for the short wait, breathlessly anticipating Santa's arrival"

Children of all ages are invited to join Mrs Claus and the elves as they put the finishing touches to Rhy'Din's Christmas. Outside the house lies a thicket of green pine trees, just the perfect shape and size for any house, home, or business. Why not come along and cut your own tree" The elves will see it safely back to your home, free of charge!

http://i849.photobucket.com/albums/ab51/RhyDinLittleTheatre/Christmastrees.jpg

Just past the trees there lies a wide paddock and stables, a little herd of reindeer preparing for their busy work on Christmas Eve. There's Dasher, and Dancer, and Prancer, and Vixen; Comet, and Cupid, and Donner, and Blitzen. But do you recall the most important time of day for these restless reindeer" Come along mid-morning or afternoon to help the elves feed the reindeer, and maybe they'll take you for a sleigh ride!

http://i849.photobucket.com/albums/ab51/RhyDinLittleTheatre/reindeer.jpg

If you can tear yourself away from those greedy reindeer, more delights await! The busy clatter and clang of hands at work will draw you into the elves' workshop, where even now they're putting the final touches to toys destined for lucky boys and girls of all ages across Rhy'Din. They could always use a little help - why not pull up a chair and join in"

If wood and metal and bright paints don't jingle your sleigh bells, perhaps the wonderful smells coming from the kitchen will entice you further inside, where Mrs Claus needs all the help she can get to fill her kitchen with plenty of goodies for the festive season. Cookies and cakes and mince pies abound - if you lose a little while making them beautiful, Mrs Claus will let you take them home!

And, of course, there's one very special place that you simply must stop at. This is where your Winter Wishes can be posted, and we all know, one very special writer this year will have a visit from Santa himself! So don't just walk on by - grab a pencil and put down your wishes, post it in the letterbox, and on Friday, Santa might well be coming to see you!

http://i849.photobucket.com/albums/ab51/RhyDinLittleTheatre/LetterstoSanta.jpg

Have you been a good girl/boy/dragon/thing/mutant-slime-monster" Ah, but have you? Have you really' Do you really deserve time up close and personal with the personification of the Christmas season here in Rhy'Din's Winterfest' Yes, Santa Claus is coming to town for one day only, and he's setting time aside to visit one - yes, ONE - lucky letter writer.

Pop a letter into Robin Redbreast's letterbox until the evening of Thursday 13th December, and by midnight, we'll all know who's on Santa's list for the unique experience of meeting the real thing, in person, on Friday 14th!

((The setting is here for you to enjoy, be it in playing, posting, or random references. Letters to Santa can be submitted below until 10pm EST on Thursday 13th December. Last year, things had been different. Well, this year, Piper was determined to make it very different, especially since her one-year-old was looking more and more like a three-year-old and talking like someone in her teens. Lyneth was buzzing with excitement for Winterfest, and as soon as the bells rang out that the little grotto in the Glen was open, she had all but dragged her mother out of the house.

Hand in hand, mother and daughter made their way down to the snow-covered slice of the North Pole, and almost immediately Piper was rushed into the thick embrace of snow-laden trees, lifting her daughter up to let Lyneth see the vast array of trees grown especially for this time of year. It seemed to take an age for the little girl to decide which one she wanted, and it was beyond Piper to work out what made the one she eventually decided upon so special. All Lyneth would tell her was that the spirit in the tree wanted to come home with them.

From there, they wandered to the stables, where again Lyneth gave Piper something of a minor heart attack by climbing into the paddock with the reindeer, laying her little gloved hands on each lowered head. She'd always known her daughter was special - a Fae child was rarely anything but, apparently - but it was a unique experience to witness the tiny girl talking to animals in what seemed to be their own language.

The toy workshop didn't appeal to the quiet child, but they lost almost two hours in Mrs Claus' kitchen, laughing and joking with the other families there as children of all ages produced the most outlandish display of Winterfest decorations for cookies, cakes, and other dainties as they came out of the huge ovens. Armed with a big box of Lyneth's own workmanship, it was something of an effort to drag the tiny girl away.

But the letterbox, now that caught Piper's attention. She remembered, as a child, writing letters to Father Christmas, laying down her wishes and hopes for the season, and she couldn't help suggesting to her daughter that she might like to do the same.

"But there ithsn't a Father Christhtmaths," Lyneth objected, lisping through her missing front teeth. "Or a thSanta Clauths."

Piper's mouth worked silently for a moment, having to rethink her approach at this point. She'd taken it for granted that Lyneth would believe in Santa or St. Nick. It came as a bit of a shock to discover that the little girl already knew the truth.

"Well," she flailed for something she could suggest instead, "....isn't there anyone you'd like to tell your winter wishes to?"

Lyneth gave her a thoughtful look from under her warm hat, huffing at stray strands of hair as she did so. "Only you," she answered in a solemn little voice, cuddling close to her mother's leg as Piper fought down the lump that rose in her throat. "Doeths Rhy'Din have a Winter King?"

Relieved that her Fae daughter had offered her an alternative, Piper swallowed, moving to crouch down, hugging one arm around the solemn child at her side. "Why don't you write to him and find out' You tell me what to write down, and you can post your letter right here and now."

Seemingly happy with this compromise, Lyneth scuttled over to the big table that had been laid out, flailing her hands toward paper and pens and envelopes as Piper joined her. Settling together, tiny girl on her mother's lap, they set about writing something to post in the special letterbox, dictated by one and set down faithfully by the other.

Dear Winter King,

I have not been very good this year. I forgot that I have a mummy and a daddy, and I made my mummy feel left out. But I will be very good next year, and I will not forget again. Please look after Ollie in your kingdom, and don't let my daddy hurt my mummy. And please can Loki have something big and chewy so he doesn't eat my teddy anymore?

I hope you have a Happy Solstice, and you die happy so that spring comes soon. I don't like the cold much. These are my winter wishes. And I will give you a big pie of something sweet so you don't get hungry, and a little glass of something from my mummy's special box, but not too much or you'll crash your sleigh.

Lyneth Katherine Davidson

The letter done, little gloved hands pushed the sealed envelope into the letterbox and, hand in hand once more, Piper and Lyneth left the Glen, excited at the prospect of decorating their very own Christmas tree together.

Shylah's Wish List to Santa Claus:

Every child receives at least one gift they want for Christmas.

No one goes hungry, or without warm clothing, or without shelter.

No animals are abused or neglected, and those in need of good homes find them.

Faith. Hope. Love. Joy. Peace.

And Snow! Everything looks so pretty blanketed in white during the winter; especially in the evenings when the street lamps or the moon's rays make things sparkle!

Dear Santa:

For most of my life I didn't know you existed. These last three years have been interesting. I've been told you don't really exist. That you are fake. But I've seen you each year.

My wants sort of have not changed. Just a peaceful and safe holiday for everyone. I have enough to get me by and more thanks to my brother so I would much rather things go to the less fortunate. Make them smile..fill their bellies..

For me..a little bit of selfishness. You see...I have a friend who has been missing. If you could in any way help him find his way home....

Be safe on your travels and Happy Holidays to you Santa.

I ain't sure why I'm writing this. I don't really believe in Santa Claus or Saint Nick or whatever you call yourself, but I've seen some strange things since I arrived in Rhydin, so I reckon anything's possible.

You probably can't grant my wish anyway, but if I only had one wish, it would be to see my little girl again. My Maggie.

See, she's back home in Texas with her aunt, and I'm here in Rhydin. It's better that way. Safer for her. I know Emma's taking good care of her, but I miss her.

If I had one wish, I'd wish to see my Maggie, hold her in my arms, and tell her one last time that I love her. That's all I really want. I just want her to be safe and happy and well.

Don't come visit me. There ain't nothing you can give me that I ain't already got. I got a loving wife and a new baby on the way. I got a roof over my head and a family again.

If you gotta visit someone, visit my Maggie, and tell her Daddy loves her.

Sincerely, Evan Lassiter —————————- Enclosed is a photograph of Evan's daughter Maggie: http://i46.tinypic.com/24wx1ua.jpg

Dear Good Spirits of the Winter Season,

I believe in all of you! Doesn't matter what name you have, you are the special beings of good that look after people. Not everyone can have all their wishes. Rick, Catie, and me got what we need and lotsa stuff we want. So, I asked Uncle Paddy if he could make sure all the kids in Rhydin could have a good Christmas dinner, can you help him and his crew with that"

Can you please make sure Doran and Azure's baby brother or sister gets a safe trip into the word" Thanks!

Love,

Maggie Harker

Claus,

You know who this is, so you know there's nothing I need or want. I have money, I have friends, I have family. So I'm pretty much good.

I've done my share of questionable things, and will likely do more, but this season, if you decide you'd like to pay me a visit, I'll be sure to leave you something to take and give to others, rather than you leaving anything for me.

I would wish much the same as many others do - peace, joy, love and happiness for the world - but I know that those things are beyond your ability to give. So I will make my request a simple one.

I have a friend who has been lost for some time. If it is within your ability, I would like your help - in whatever small way you can manage - in bringing him home, or at least in knowing he is safe.

Sincerely,

Ed Batten

On the stroke of 10pm, the little magical letter box faded from view, leaving behind only a faint glimmer of sparkle in the snow. Barely moments later, the news went whizzing through the town. The winning letter had been chosen! Santa's special visit had been decided!

Congratulations to Mairead Harker! Santa Claus is coming to YOU!

When Maggie got the news, she shouted across the house, "MAMA! DA!" She ran to the kitchen all excited about her prize. "Santa's comin'!"

Rhiannon crouched down to get on eye level with her daughter. "When?" Rhi smiled.

"I get to see him on Friday near the Market!" Maggie's eyes were bright and her smile was gleeful.

"Oh, Maggie," Rhiannon frowned, "did you forget' We're going to see The Nutcracker on Friday!"

Maggie sighed and dropped her jaw into her upturned palms. "What can we do, Mama?" We can't disappoint Santa!"

Rhiannon pursed her lips. "I think I have an idea!" She grinned as she remembered how she and her siblings had sent their messages to Santa. "Go get your paper and pencils."

"Ok!" Maggie dashed off to gather up the supplies. She set them on the table. "Ok, now what?"

"Well, Santa is magic, right?"

"Yeaaaaaah," Maggie peered at her mother as if she was about to get bad news.

"Then you write and I'll help you send it." Meanwhile, Mrs. Harker was drawing a map and folding around something.

Maggie wrote:

Dear Santa,

I am very sorry, but I forgot that I'm sposta go to Shanasomething theater for a show with my famly!

"Mama! Can we ask him to come for supper before he goes there?"

"Yes!" Rhi grinned as she lifted the held out the travel stone wrapped in the paper map. "You promise not to be disappointed if he can't come?"

Maggie's lips pursed. "I'll try hard, Mama, but that's not gonna be easy!"

"That's the spirit!" She set the stone down and ruffled Maggie's hair.

Maggie continued writing:

Mama said that I could invite you for dinner before you go see everyone else. I hope you can come! She's sendin a special stone to help you find us and everythin! Will you please come and see us, Santa" I hope you don't mind lots, but Rick and Catie will wanna meet you, too!"

Love,

Maggie

"How's that look?" She showed off her handiwork to her mother.

"It will do nicely, I think." Rhiannon careful folded the letter. "Come on, down to the family room."

"What are we gonna do, Mama?"

"A little magic, my girl, a little magic." She flashed a wink at her eldest before heading down the stairs.

Maggie followed her mother. "Mama, you sound like Gran when you do that!"

Rhiannon murmured something and set the note, map, and stone into the burning hearth.

"You're gonna burn it?" Maggie's eyes widened. She'd never seen her mother do any fire magic. "I better get Aunt Nikki!" The child knew the story of her aunt had come to be called a fire tamer.

"No, no, it's not that kind of magic." Rhiannon's eyes closed and the paper and stone were whisked away to Santa or his current helper. "Now, we just have to hope he gets your message in time."

"Thanks, Mama!" She planted a kiss on her mother's cheek.

((My apologies, Maggie will not be able to make the event tonight as I was surprised by my family with advance tickets for opening night of "The Hobbit."))
