Eternal Rhapsody

Rhapsody awoke, mouth dry as a desert, and throat as well. She moaned softly as she rolled, smelling incense and wet paint. She cracked an eye and winced as the ligt from the room cut deeply, stabbing at her already throbbing head. Where was she" This was not her room...

She heard humming and the sounds of movement in the room. She smelled a woman's scent, perfumes and such, beneath the smell of paint. Her voice was raw, hoarse, as she spoke. "Where am I" Miss" What happened?"

Sitting up made her head spin, or was the room doing that' She covered her mouth, gulping back a wave of nausea, and quickly lay back down. Oh, her head! She remembered playing that drinking game with that vampiric woman, and that was the last thing she recalled from the night before. What had she done?

It had been weeks since that fateful night when she took Rhapsody back to her room. They became friends, then lovers.

Val returned home to thier adjoining rooms at the Inn, and sank back onto the bed with a sigh. Rhapsody was still off at work, she'd been staying with that songwriter while she helped him out. Val was comfortable with the silence that hung over their rooms.

She expected Rhapsody home any day now, and she was going to ask her to move in with her. Well, they were already living together in a sense, but, they were living together in an Inn. She had recently bought a house, near where her studio and home had once stood.

Valentine was restless, she paced, sang to herself some, and then set at her easel. She stared at the painting of Chiana, and talked to it for another hour. She missed Chiana, terribly, for some reason. She had hardly known the woman, but Chiana had befriended her and had been kind to her when she was at her craziest. She felt a longing that she couldn't explain, a regret. Perhaps when Rhapsody came home, she could help her understand it.

Rhapsody returned in the dead of night, exhausted but pleased. Her work was done with the song writer, and she was eager to return to Valentine.

Creeping in the door, she was startled to find all her bags, as well as Val's, packed. Valentine was perched atop a stack of trunks, swinging her feet and grinning at her.

"Val, hun, what?s going on?"

Moving to her, she slid her arms around her girl's waist and kissed her cheek. "Did they kick us out' Was it that duck, again? I told you to keep him quiet at night. Did the neighbors complain?"

"Nope. We're moving. I bought a house, and I want you to come with me."

Hopping down from the stack of trunks, she kissed Rhapsody and drug her to the window, pointing out. "Over there. With the windows open, we can hear the music from the taverns and bars at night. It's closer to the musician's district."

She grinned, tossing a cracker from her pocket to the softly quacking duck at their feet. He was as eager to get on with the move as Val was. He'd been promised free reign on the backyard pool.

"Rhapsody, will you move in with me?" She got down on one knee, grinning like a cheshire cat, and holding up a golden key on a silver ring.
