http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab276/kattstrife/Events/writing.jpg Winter brings the cold of snow. The blustery whistle of chilled winds, nights illuminated by the moon in a clear, lonely sky, turning the land covered in white to a blue fantasy children delight in. And maybe too, the children trapped inside of us all.

THE PATHWAY TO THE GREAT HALL http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k497/Pinkisnotevil/Winterfest2011/ED_Winter-Decor-wLED-lighting_Full.jpg With this in mind, the Great Hall has been dutifully and carefully transformed into a winter wonderland for the Governors Yule ball. Upon approaching the Great Hall, a guest can note that the walkway leading to the Hall's doors has been thoroughly cleared of snow and ice, making the journey for ladies and lords less dubious. As carriages or other means of guest transportation arrive, men and women in livery of blue and white appear. These blue and white helpers trained to handle all manner of RhyDinian transport wait to assists guests out of vehicles.

The walk to the Great Hall doors are decorated with bare trees that stretch toward the cold sky have been hand painted brilliant silver or metallic blue. Their branches have been hung with grand crystals in multitude of shapes. Below each tree soft white light has been placed to illuminate both the path and the crystals.

THE DOOR & JUST INSIDE http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k497/Pinkisnotevil/Winterfest2011/2267334697_73269d34d1.jpg Guests might immediately notice that music is being piped in to every area of the Great Hall. There are of course, many more liveried men and women in blue and white to take coats, cloaks, mittens, gloves, scarves and anything else guests wish to have taken and held onto at arrival. There are also decorative bins placed about the entrance way. One is marked: Coats & Jacket donations for RhyDin Coats for Kids, another is marked Non Perishable food donations to the RhyDin food bank, another reads: Thank you for donating your children's used mitts, hats, gloves, booths and warm winter clothing for the RhyDin Orphans!

Guarding most of the sights of the Great hall is a magnificent wall of miniscule Swaroviski crystals, beaded and strung together to mark the start of a magical evening. Glittering mischievously and promising rich delights to those who walk through them, they chime and tink together cheerfully, tossing about the warm light as guests pass through them.

THE MAIN ROOM http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k497/Pinkisnotevil/Winterfest2011/whitesilk.jpg There are many sights, sounds and smells to be gathered once guests have crossed the crystal curtain. First, one may note the Great Halls ceilings and rafters have been draped in dazzling white silk. Behind the silk, soft lights flood the floor below in intimate light. Swatches of frosted blue and creamy white silk supported lightly from the ceiling also fall to 'separate' the main room for dancing and mingling, from the two 'wings'. To the immediate left, the smells and sounds of food and drink. To the immediate right, darker, royal navy silk denotes a room for more privacy for family gatherings and those who may need a moment to collect them from the wild winter of the evening.

http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k497/Pinkisnotevil/Winterfest2011/sno_ani02.gif Speaking of Enchantment, the illusion of softly falling snow just at the right jovial, languid speed can be seen falling at random within the hall. No chances or worries about blizzards here. Of course, these snowflakes won't chill anyone. The only disadvantage is they do not melt on eyelashes or stick to noses, simply disappearing on contact.

Large circular tables decorated in blue and white or silver dot the great hall to the sides, spaced well apart to leave ample mingling room and a clear path to the dance floor. Candles that faintly give off the smell of fresh pine needles or just-snapped-candy canes burn low and light (for those sensitive to too much scent, several tables have candles that give off no scent.) Baby's breath in crystal vases also brighten up some of the tables, others are decorated in elaborate sculptures made of ice or crystals. So alike, the only way to tell if one sculpture were ice or crystal would be to wait for melting or by touch.

House Faern'elgg'ur and DarkStar Recovery Group's donated centerpiece for tables, complete with exotic flowers and greenery native to Faerun and lit by faerie fire can also be easily spotted. Each piece was hand designed and crafted by a mage affiliated with House Faern'elgg'ur or the DarkStar Recovery Group with amazing detail and care.

Also upon the tables, donated and crafted by Shylah, are julbock to stand watch by the Christmas tree and guard the packages under it. This little fellow is made the traditional way with bundled straw and red ribbon. It is approximately 7" tall. Guests are encouraged to take them home to have a keep sake by which to remember the Ball by.

http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k497/Pinkisnotevil/Winterfest2011/tree_3.jpghttp://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k497/Pinkisnotevil/Winterfest2011/manzanita-crystal-tree-4.png Miniatures of the trees which lined the pathway to the Great Hall outside exist inside the hall as well. In accordance and respect of druidic law and recycling efforts as well as the long sleep the Ents go into for winter—no live trees or Rhydin Ents were used in any decoration. They too, have been hand painted white, silver, metallic blue or left grey and natural. Their bare spiraling branches adored with hand-cut, multifaceted crystals that chimed in the errant breeze and made patches of reflected light appear on passerbys tables, floor and silk: a moving tableaux of starlight.

FOOD & DRINK While the evening's servants dressed in blue and white will carry silver trays of fine wines, sweet meads, dark ales and bottled water, every guest is encouraged to visit the bar settled to the left from the main entrance. http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k497/Pinkisnotevil/Winterfest2011/frontbar.jpg Here, a great mammoth construction of ice is being used as in place of a traditional wooden bar. Many experienced bar tenders in blue and white man the bar made of ice, holes and crevices of various sizes—perfect for cups and glasses and tankards—have been carved out from the top of the bar so that guests may settle drinks within them. Here at the ice bar, several frosty shots in addition to custom drinks for the winter season can also be ordered in glasses made of ice should daring guests with the power to not mind the cold can order.

http://i871.photobucket.com/albums/ab276/kattstrife/Events/foodstuff-1.png Across from the ice bar on the other side of the room grand tables in spotlessly white linen are bedecked with Yule, Christmas, Winterfeast inspired food as well as a surprising selection of foods found from all realms and places. The tables are kept clean, the food does not sit out long before being replaced and there is no such thing as an empty selection. Hot or cold drinks or food of all shapes and sizes can be found here, and more tables are nearby for those who do not wish to carry their food back to the main room.

It seemed maybe that the Bon Bon Boutique might of even had a hand in the catering as there are a number of delicious treats among the feast. Decorating the tables are a number of centerpieces creations carved from fruits and vegetables. As beautiful as they look they are eatable.

MAKE A LASTING MEMORY http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k497/Pinkisnotevil/Winterfest2011/Wedding-Decorations-Ottawa.jpg To the right of the main room, darker silks pulled taught to mimic real walls create a much more intimate and private experience. Here in this area, a change of pace from the white and silver and frosted tints of the dancing and drinking can be found.

Within the room one will find a fantastical contraption build big enough for two—perhaps four at the most—people to slide into. Recently acquired from a reputable off-world source, Mannie's Magnificent Memory Maker is a large block with a dark curtain pulled across a small seat. The instructions on the side tell guests to open the curtain and enter.

Once inside a small scroll unfurls. Within the scroll the words appear: Please stare ahead at this magical dot while a red swirling dot appears on the scroll. Smile, and wait twenty seconds. Please feel free to laugh, move about, talk, or do whatever you like. Thank you for choosing Mannie's Magnificent Memory Maker! After a brief flash of light, guests can leave the strange booth to note a slot on the outside ejects a long, thick piece of blue paper. Upon picking it up, one may ooooh and aaaah— as they behold a charming, moving portrait of themselves! Twenty seconds of their lives captured and framed in dark blue with silver accents, theirs to keep for free and for as long as they like.

THE DANCE FLOOR & STAGE http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k497/Pinkisnotevil/Winterfest2011/dance_floor.jpg The dance floor and stage are the largest areas. The dance floor, specially made by the DCS (Dwarven Crafts Society) is—at least to the bare eye—the exact picture of a small iced over pond. Oval in shape, 'ice' steps lead upward to the main dance floor, its edges decorated by sparkling piles of snow (which, if dancers too full of festive merriment were to tumble on, would find is incredibly soft, safe, and not really snow at all) to keep dancers from slipping off the edge.

Of course, the stage isn't ice at all and is craftily textured minute enough not to be caught by naked eye and just enough to ensure shoes, heels and delicate lady's slippers are kept slip-free.

Below the dance floor are various soft rainbow hues of lights. They swirl, bob, zig-zag, spell out holiday words as well as pulse and respond to the beats of the various music being played by the hired band.

The stage where the band and DJ are nestled in is raised further above the ice-pond looking dance floor. Half-hidden behind diaphanous curtains of tiniest crystals and blue and white curtains, the music they play seems happily enchanted thanks to the hard word of the IAPP to be the right level for each and every guest: loud if they want it, soft if they wish it so conversation can be held.

There was not a single detail overlooked, a single spot not decorated in silver, blue, white, snowflakes that glittered in warm light. Truly, winter's magic had embodied itself inside the Great Hall for a night of unforgettable magic.
