Kara Blau

"Do you suppose that she will not be too angry with us?" The shorter of the two men spoke as they looked at the rapidly multiplying assembly of strangers in the area that Kara had told them to keep clear of any strangers. The sense of growing dread that had been sneaking up on Rolf all evening seemed to be racing with the sunrise to outshine everything else and explode over the horizon with, what Rolf imagined, would be his fate when Kara came back and found things the way they were at present.

The taller of the two was biting his nails as he squinted down at the men and women. "That Kara's best mate down there being dragged by a metal leash?" Harold did not have much of an imagination, not like Rolf, so his dread was more the calm, ordinary sort where you were sure that bad things were going to happen but lacking any of the grisly details that were currently working at sending Rolf into catatonic state of terror.

"What?" Rolf said as he scrambled up on a crate to get a better view. Seeing a man being dragged along by a chain he immediately pulled out his communicator and searched for images of Maximilian Schwarz. "No, no I do not think that is him." His voice was rising in pitch as he spoke, he'd never been a good liar and he was the worst when it came to lying to himself. "Or...if it is, I am sure that he is here of his own free will."

"I really think you lads should reconsider, you know Kara and she isn't the forgiving type." The man's words seemed to reach Rolf and Harold with the same effect that bullets might have on lesser creatures. Both men staggered visibly. Those holding the chain did not seem to care, mocking their prisoner and pulling hard in an effort to make the man fall to his knees.

"Do....do you suppose we can go somewhere Kara cannot find us?" Rolf said with the tone of someone that knows the answer but wanted that last confirmation before he found a high cliff to leap from, because if you were going to die why not fly for the last few moments of your life"

"We should call her now. If we call her right now we can say that they all showed up ...right now. How do you suppose they got him' He is a good fighter, saw him in the Sunshot Bar take out many falling down drunk men." Harold was pulling out his own communicator device.

"If they were already falling down..." Rolf started but opted not to continue, the nuance would be lost on Harold, who was his twin, even if they did not look identical and was older by four and a half minutes. That four and a half minutes of extra womb time seemed to have done Rolf a world of good as he got most of the brains.

By the time Rolf thought to protest Harold had already sent the first communication. "Great and wise goddess of the night, keeper of the sacred trust, holder of the chalice of wonder, breaker of the bones when disobeyed, benevolent mistress Blau, it is Rolf and Harold reporting in from Upper Talos, most dutiful and adoring of all your subjects."

A minute later a reply posted. "Rolf, Harold. I have told you that I am not a Goddess, I am your employer. Have you something to report or is this just a reminder that you are dutiful and adoring?" "Great and wise employer of the night, keeper of the sacred trust, holder of the chalice of wonder, breaker of the bones when disobeyed, benevolent mistress Blau, we have news to report. The place that you forbade the presence of strangers has been ..." Harold thought, this was a painful process, Rolf decided to just rip off the truth like a band-aid that had been adhered to the flesh with superglue. "Filled with strangers and they seem to have brought Mr. Schwarz, your faithful and loyal sidekick, along. Perhaps it is that he likes to be leashed?" Rolf added hopefully, there were stranger hobbies than being lead about on a leash, and his imagination was providing him with images of what Kara would do to them if she found them at fault.

By the time Kara sent her reply Harold had distanced himself from the communication device as far as his arms would allow and still have hold of it, as if he expected it to do Kara's bidding and smite him on the spot. "Send me the specifics. Get me numbers, and photos. If you can find out why they have Max all the better but do not get yourselves caught. Have I made myself clear?"

Both Rolf and Harold let out shaky breaths as they took this to mean that she was not going to smite them, or at least not yet. "Yes, great and wise employer of the night, keeper of the sacred trust, holder of the chalice of wonder, breaker of the bones when disobeyed, benevolent mistress Blau, we hear and obey. We will report in shortly with the information you have requested. Signing off, your most dutiful and adoring subjects, that's me, Harold and Rolf."

And because they shut the communication link down they did not get the sigh that Kara sent with a great deal of energy.
