The Adventures of Jake and Si — Provo Harbor

Jake had thought Sienna to be a kindred spirit from the first time he saw her with a mustache of black and tan ale foam gracing her upper lip; but he was surprised just how similar their life lines ran.

He had stopped eating while she told her story; letting the fish stew cool in the bowl. Now it was his turn to pick up the wine bottle and fill his glass, he topped off hers too and the bottle was empty.

"I'll never make y'do anything that y'don't have a mind t'do, Si. Iffn' y'want t'give Provo a try, then I'm happy t'have you 'round."

He smiled warmly; and what a sight to see! The harsh lines around his mouth smoothed out and his eyes didn't seem all squinty and shifty. The look was gone before it could make itself comfortable on his face though. He looked down at the congealed stew and grimaced; stuffing his bowl into the pot along with the spoon and crust of bread.

"Never been a big fish man, m'self."

He raised his glass remembering a toast he'd heard recently.

"T'Fate, it makes f'strange bedfellows."

He clinked his glass against Si's and drained off the dregs.

It was a tired Jake and Si that stood on the deck as the ship entered Provo Harbor. They had just finished the inventory count when the call of Land was heard. Jake couldn't have timed it better if he'd tried. The sun was just rising over the shoreline and by the looks of the painted sky, it was going to be a glorious day. The water was as calm as he'd ever seen it and the harbor was still asleep. Only the gentle rocking motion of the moored ships and the call of the seagulls welcomed them.

It was a cold morning and he wrapped Sienna in his arms to keep her warm. Leaning his head down to enjoy the scent of her hair, he whispered.

"Welcome to Provo, Sienna."
