Two Years Ago

Tap. Tap tap. Taptaptap. Tap. "Don't know why you bother knocking, but come in!" She belted over her shoulder, keeping her eyes glued to the television screen.

The soft, shifting glow of the screen illuminated the dark living room. It scrawled light over the girl curled up on the corner of the couch, leaned against the armrest with her knees pulled up. A bowl half full of popcorn was now room temperature from having been waiting before she gave in to the buttery scent was cradled between her chest and knees. She was dressed in a large and worn sweatshirt that dwarfed her slender body inside it, flannel pajama pants that were drawn tight around narrow hips. Her feel were bare.

The door opened after the beckoning call, her sister's raspy tone was drowned out by the screams on the television screen, much as the sound of the door closing and the woman's steps drawing toward the couch. "What?" Leilani blinked, tearing her eyes away from the syrupy gore flashing over the television to the older sibling standing at the end of the couch with her arms crossed. She reached over to the remote and jabbed the button to lower the volume so she could hear her.

"I said you know I always knock. And what the hell, I told you I was only gonna be a few minutes," Ryleigh gestured to the movie that had already started without her. Her disheveled hair was an absolute mess. Her leather jacket covered a tattered grey tee shirt, and her jeans were just as torn up. Her boots were worn and could stand to be replaced, but she couldn't be bothered with it.

"Yeah....I know. I got the text," Lani said dryly, scooping up another handful of popcorn. "...a half hour ago," she grumbled into the handful as she shoved it in her mouth. "Fo, whu rook roo fo rong?"

"Dude," Ryleigh wrinkled her nose, casting her a look while she removed her jacket and haphazardly draped it over the back of the couch before folding herself heavily into the cushion on the other end of the couch. "Don't talk with your mouth full. Didn't catch a fucking word you just said," she scoffed, leaning and half-sprawling over the cushions to reach for the bowl in her sister's lap.

The younger of the two chewed and swallowed, her arms wrapping possesively around the bowl as she turned away some to block that reaching hand. Her eyes narrowed slowly like an animal protecting it's food dish. "I said, what took you so friggin' long?"

"C'mon," the reacher whined. "Ugh," she groaned, scooting across the cushion to get closer. "I was....busy," she shrugged one shoulder nonchalantly, reaching again. "Don't worry about where I was, m'here now. What's the difference?" She sighed, both narrow faces were now glaring at the other.

"You're always busy," Lani drawled. "But you never tell me where, and you're always late. For ev-ery-thing. You'd be late to your own funeral," she scoffed, rolling her eyes before she relented and handed over the bowl. "Here, it tastes like crap 'cause I made it when you sent that text," she shot her sister a look before crossing her arms over her chest.

Bowl in her lap, Ryleigh sighed. "Okay, I'm sorry, I'll send you a warning text if I'm gonna be late next time. Okay?" Her head fell back against the couch, head rolling to look at her sister before she tossed a kernel of popcorn into her mouth. "Okay"" She lifted her head as her face scrunched. "Oh, man - that tastes like shit," she muttered, tipping her head forward as she spat the partially chewed piece back into the bowl.

Lani grumped it up against that armrest, not believing those words for a second. "Yeah....right.." She muttered. She looked over in time to see that satisfying face from the cold popcorn, and she huffed to the bowl being ruined. "Ew! Ry! You're disgusting!" She yelped, taking the bowl from her sister to peer into it. "You've got your gross spit all over it," she grumbled, leaning forward to put the bowl onto the coffee table.

"I got your gross popcorn in my mouth, that's far more offensive," Ry told her, working herself to her feet. "It's burnt and cold, that's like....the worst fucking combination," she scowled, heading for the kitchen. "You got any beer?"

"Fuck you, my popcorn is awesome - when it's hot." She wrinkled her nose, but she knew it wasn't. It was awful. She always burnt the popcorn. "You should stop drinking so much," she told her, watching the woman heading for the fridge.

"And you should get off my case," she retorted, yanking open the door and bending to peer into the illuminated cold box. "And get beer next time." She sighed, settling for a soda and she took two from the door shelf, nudging the door closed with her boot before she returned.

Soda passed off, the younger sibling scrunched her face. "Beer is nasty. Whatever, you're forgiven," she shook her head, flapping her hand. "As long as you shut up, 'cause you're ruining this movie."

Ryleigh was quiet a moment, aside from the loud cracking of the can and the obnoxiously loud slurping of the beverage as she waited.

"GOD, FINE. I'LL RESTART THE FRIGGIN' MOVIE," Lani barked, grumbling up a storm as she snatched up the remote.

Ryleigh smirked. "Atta girl."
