Loxley

The day had been dreadfully long. Too long, and in fact, was only partially over. A lord's duty was never done- even if he so wished it was. The exhaustion wracking through Loxley's body made him feel as if he had run all over creation itself. Twice, even. The lectures, the lessons, the paperwork, the problems- they all started to run together, blurring at the edges to become one enormous burden the young lad simply couldn't shoulder on his own. Sure, there was Gabriel, the guards, and the staff but if they were really there would he feel so completely and utterly....alone and overwrought"

Loxley hadn't even bothered to change when he collapsed into his bed. There was no point really, as the respite would be short lived. Then there would be another seeking him out, there would something else to do. He had on his shoulders more to bear than any fourteen year old ever should, but could he really complain" There were so many others in such worse states than he and all he did was....complain. He longed for the freedom he saw in other children, for that right to be so carefree (not that he'd ever voice such a thing). But he had a shelter, food, clothing- necessities others did not.

Still, rational thought was not the forte of many fourteen year olds, if any. Loxley could try and think as logically and reasonably as he wanted. He could try to rationalize things, but it didn't change the fact he'd still rather be anywhere else than where he was at right now. Riding Cheska through a field far away from it all. At the Duels with people he could almost consider friends, who treated him as one of their own and not as if he were on a pedestal above them. Or maybe even with-

"Loxy!"

The shrill, melodious and familiar shout jolted him from his near sleep. Sitting up he rubbed at his eyes briefly before peering around his room to seek out the source. There was no one else there though, and nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Frowning and shaking his head, Loxley was just about to try and lay back down before hearing what sounded like tapping upon his window. What could have climbed up the balcony" To his feet, the young lad cautiously wandered across his bedroom and towards his drape covered windows.

Then came the tapping sound, more furiously this time.

For a moment Loxley contemplated retreating his room to seek out the aid of one of the many guards on duty. Or perhaps even Gabriel....but there was no one in Rhydin that would seek to do him harm was there" No, only in Asteria. It would be such a waste of time and resource for anyone to be sent to kill an exiled lord. Besides, if he wanted his freedom he could not act as a child. He had to be more assertive. So with a sharp exhalation of air he grasped his drapes to pull them aside and peer out at-

-nothing"

"Loxy!!"

The voice sounded yet again as the small pixie flittered aside in front of his window. Beaming smile in place as always on the familiar red head, she lifted a tiny hand to tap upon the window again. "Are you just gonna stand there or are you goin' to let me in?" Hands moved to rest on her hips as quick wings kept her afloat, then the pixie regarded Loxley impatiently.

His mouth agape in surprise, Loxley seemed ready to ask the pixie quite a few questions. Instead, he simply shook his head and reached over to unlatch one of the windows and pulled it open. Just as he expected when there was enough room for her to enter she shot through the opening to flutter about his room quickly and at random, seemingly looking over every detail.

"You have lots of nice things Loxy! And your room is so neat! I thought boys were messier than this! Oh! This is pretty..." Ever the enthusiastic one, she spoke quickly as she darted hither and thither.

Quirking a brow Loxley couldn't help but chuckle some. He couldn't exactly deny that her presence had something of an uplifting effect on him. While not sure how she knew where he lived, he wouldn't put it past her to have followed him at some point, but it was nice that she was there. "I have never cared for disorder, but I am afraid I cannot quite take credit for the condition of my room." He gestured around as if reiterating his point. "The serv- staff keeps it up as they do the rest of the chateau." And the grounds. And the stables. And the court yard. And the gardens...

Taking note of the pixie's interest in one of the Sol crystals he had out, Loxley approached the mahogany bureau she hovered over. "That is a Sol Crystal- it is a relatively recent import from Cadentia and..." The lad trailed off realizing how dreadfully boring he must sound and seeing the pixie's attention wander already, so he opted for a more direct approach. "What is it that brings you here, Trinala?"

Silvery-green eyes cast their way back towards Loxley as Trinala smiled brightly to him then fluttered over to perch herself atop his head. Leaning over, she peered down at his face. "You of course!" Sitting back, she grabbed a few ebon strands of his hair and set to work immediately on braiding those strands together, looking rather content in the process.

Loxley however, looked ever so slightly less content about how his hair would look when she was done with it. Cheeks warm at her words he started to speak up in an effort to get her to cease the braiding of his hair but he was cut off by a few knocks at his door.

"Lord Loxley, are you in?"

That seemed to catch Trinala's attention as she paused and leaned back over to peer down at him, curiously this time as she giggled. "Lord?"

He sighed.

Loxley inwardly cringed as the knocks at the door continued then tilted his head back just a little as he glanced upwards in an effort to see the pixie on his head. His words came with no small amount of hesitation and regret. "Trinala, it is probably best that you leave now."

Releasing his hair, she took flight once more to hover in front of Loxley's face and spun about to face him looking rather wounded. "You don't want me around?" Shoulders seemed to sag as she frowned and her gaze lowered making her look so very....sad. It didn't seem quite like her.

"No." Quick to interject, he shook his head. "That is not it at all. I-" Cut off by more knocks at the door, louder and urgent in nature this time, Loxley grit his teeth in annoyance before turning towards it to call out. "I shall be there in a moment!" The anger in his words surprised even him as he fell quiet.

Seeming to perk, Trinala hovered away from him towards the door- where the knocking had indeed stopped- to look it over ever so carefully. With a thoughtful look on her face she turned again to face Loxley and suddenly grinned, big and bright. "You don't want to be here!"

Was he truly that obvious" That ought to not come at a surprise then, that the pixie was able to pick up on his true feelings. Looking beyond her and towards the door he simply shook his head. "No, I do not. I would rather be elsewhere."

"Lord Loxley, is there someone in there with you?"

At a loss for how to answer, the lad just didn't offer one. Lucky for him (or not") Trinala was happy to do so. "Lord Loxy's just talking to himself!"

With a shake of his head Loxley raised a hand to his face to hide both the look of amusement and dread on his face. He didn't want anyone at the chateau to see Trinala. Not because he was ashamed of her, but he wasn't sure how she would be....taken. And what would Gabriel think" What would he say' Loxley wouldn't put it past him to forbid him from speaking to 'the likes of her' anymore.

He wasn't left to his thoughts for long, before feeling a tug on his sleeve. Brow quirking, he took note of Trinala urging him back towards the windows. Given the choice of there or back to the knocking door- he went with the pixie. "We can leave this place!" She was full of enthusiasm as she flittered to the open window and through it, watching Loxley expectantly.

Eyes growing wide, Loxley opened the window further to step out on the balcony, peering down. It was a good climb down....but why would he even consider such a thing" "Trinala, I-I cannot just-"

"Milord" Is there a problem?"

Gabriel's voice cut through this time over the sounds of him trying to open the locked door.

"Why not!?" Looking both angry and dejected, Trinala set her hands to her hips. "You're not happy here Loxy, why not go somewhere else?"

"It's not that easy..."

"It is!" Huffing, arms moved from her hips to cross in front of her chest. "I'll be waiting for you at the bottom!" With that, she darted down and out of sight leaving the lad with a decision.

One last look was given over the balcony in hopes of catching sight of the crimson haired pixie again before Loxley turned back towards the door, a frown forming and deepening as the knocking grew only louder and louder.

Loxley ran in spite of the exhaustion that wracked through his body in nauseated waves. The burning sensation in his legs weren't letting up nor was it easy to draw breath in his state- still, he ran. Even when the world started to blur and spin and he felt as if the ground was rising- he slowed, but he ran. It was only when the chataeu was far out of sight and he reached one of the few dirt roads entwined in the expanse farmlands of Concordia did he slow. Hunched over, legs wobbled beneath him, feeling as if they'd give out from beneath him at any moment.

He heard the *pop* and the light footfalls drawing closer, but he did not look up. Not until he felt a delicate arm slip around his waist to assist in hoisting him up. "I don't think you're in very good shape Loxy..." Trinala's voice, though lower in pitch in her larger form, was still soft and filled with concern. "I thought you dueled" That should keep you in better condition than this."

Though Loxley wasn't in the best physical condition he could be he was still far from having a poor constitution. It wasn't the running that had exhausted him, but the combination of that while already being so drained from the day. Taking a few moments to catch his breath, he then responded to Trinala. "I do not duel nearly as often as I would like."

"How come?" Her inquiry came quickly as she hoisted him up a little more, having to exert some effort to do so. He did have a few inches on her, even in her bigger form. "You're always stuck at that place aren't you?" She started to walk down the road, slow but sure, leading the boy along.

"It....is something like that, yes. I have much that needs to be done- I ought to not even be here now." The words came quietly, but still he made no move to pull away or resist being lead down the path. Even if he felt he could pass out from exhaustion Loxley still preferred where he was as opposed to being stuck at the chataeu. Grey-blues turned aside to Trinala, regarding her with curiosity. "Where are we going now?"

"Away." A simple response from her as she continued onwards. Loxley accepted the response with silence.

Not too long in their walk a horse drawn wagon started passing by on the same road they walked upon. Away from Concordia and towards the city, which seemed where Trinala was leading them. Pausing, she lifted her free hand to flag down the man perched on the wagon, reins in his hand. He was tan, and densely built- quite obviously a farmer or farm hand of some sort, someone used to hard work. With a tug to the reins horses and wagon came to a halt as he turned to regard the peculiar duo. The beautiful woman with the crimson hair and red dress and the exhausted lad dressed far too finely to be a native to the small hamlet they were in.

"Where are you heading mister?" Ever upbeat, Trinala smiled broadly to the man.

Dark eyes took the pair in before he turned his gaze back to the road ahead of him. "Headin' to the city. If you two be wantin' a ride there I can accommodate." He thumbed behind himself towards the wagon. "Just be quick about gettin' on."

"Thank you!" Trinala exclaimed her thanks verbally, while Loxley nodded his appreciation towards the man. Quick steps and shuffling carried the duo behind the wagon where they both took a seat on the end, legs dangling off edge. Mere moments after they settled the wagon driver snapped the reins to get the horses moving yet again.

Loxley leaned so his back pressed against a crate, absently watching the fading scenery. With a sigh he tilted his head back and allowed his eyes to close so that he might take respite in rest. If only for a short time. He didn't even stir when he felt Trinala rest her head against his shoulder.

At some point Loxley had dozed off. It wasn't until Trinala tugged at his arm quite a bit that he started to stir once more. "Loxy! Wake up!" The cry had also assisted in getting the boy to awaken, making him jolt upright. He wiped at his eyes briefly before surveying his surroundings. No longer in Concordia, they had arrived in the city of Rhydin. Judging by the beautiful, well kept buildings and homes that surrounded them and the hint of salt in the air he presumed they were in New Haven- definitely one of the nicer parts of town.

Taking notice that the wagon he sat upon had stopped and Trinala was standing on the ground rather than sitting next to him, he slid from his spot at the back to drop on the ground as well. Loxley still felt a little tired and sluggish, but the rest had done him much good. Now, he felt he could function at least. He smiled sheepishly towards Trinala, an apologetic gesture for falling asleep, then took a few steps around the wagon to regard the man who had been generous enough to give them a ride.

"I thank you for your kindness sir." Approaching the man, the boy pulled out a couple silver coins from a pouch on his belt and handed them over. "For your trouble."

The man took the money hesitantly, eying it briefly before slipping it away in a pocket, lopsided grin on his face. "Thanks lad." He tipped his shoddy hat to Loxley and Trinala both before lightly snapping the reins he held, then continued on towards his destination. Likely to drop off the 'fruits of his labor' from farming somewhere to be shipped out elsewhere.

Loxley barely had time to turn and face Trinala again before she clasped her hand around his and started down one of the main roads. With no time to object, he was tugged along with her, cheeks reddening some as he regarded their hands. Though, any sort of urge to object was not yet present in him.

"Where are we going now?" Grey-blues lifted from their hands and back up to her, his tone more curious than anything.

Turning to glance over her shoulder to Loxley, her eyes seemed to twinkled mischievously as she grinned in an impish manner to him, offering little to answer the question. "You'll see!"

As he had already done so often in the past, the lad followed the pixie without rhyme or reason.

It was amazing to Loxley how fast Trinala could run. He ran, just as fast as he could, willing himself to keep pace with her, but her speed and endurance were winning out over his own. It wasn't long before her grip on his hand was broken, though she didn't slow or pause, even as he grasped out for her- she just kept running. Down sidewalks and roads, through twisting paths and alleyways.

It wasn't long before the lad was left on his own.

Pixie now entirely out of sight, Loxley finally stopped to gain his breath. Bent over, hands on his knees, he breathed deeply and quickly. He was exhausted, feeling as if he could slump to the ground right now and fall into a deep sleep. Such a thing didn't need to happen so he forced himself to straighten and trudge forward, taking the time to look over his surroundings.

He wasn't sure where he was, honestly, but it was a change from Concordia and New Haven. The buildings seemed....dingier, somehow. More broken down. Windows were dark, whereas windows on the eastern sides of town were brightly lit, and made for far more welcoming homes than these. Something foul lingered in the air, causing his nose to wrinkle a bit. It wasn't a scent he could place his finger on. Familiar, for certain, but what was it"

"Trinala?" Loxley called out, no longer wanting to be in this unfamiliar territory. It felt unsafe to him, somehow, and it worried him to be there. It worried him that Trinala was out there. But why would she have lead him to such a place" "Where are you?"

Giggling. It definitely caught his attention, being something of a beacon of light in this dark place. With a frown he glanced around, gaze settling on a nearby alley. He was certain that was where he had heard it from, but something inside him nagged, telling him he should turn around and walk away. A feeling of foreboding....but he couldn't leave without finding Trinala first. He'd not leave her in this place alone.

"Trinala!" Loxley called out again, as he wandered towards the entrance of the alley. There was certainly hesitation, as a stronger scent hit him, carrying power even in the stagnant air. For a moment he thought he would be sick, but the scent seemed to pass relatively quickly. "Trinala...?" It was called out again, softer this time.

He stepped forward, one foot slowly moving in front of the other as he wandered further and further into the alley. Goosebumps ran over Loxley's arms and neck, combination of the dread in the pit of his stomach and the chill that seemed to linger in the air. The alley seemed so long to him, never ending in a way. Even peering ahead, he couldn't make out any sort of exit. What he did see, however, was what appeared to be a fallen form.

Panic came rather easily to him, as he started to sprint forward, feeling tears stinging at his eyes. Dread grew stronger, now accompanied by guilt. If he had stayed with her....perhaps....perhaps...

No.

Loxley slowed as he drew closer to the form. It wasn't Trinala, but whoever it was didn't seem to be in good shape. Wrapped in tattered clothing the man appeared to be some sort of derelict vagrant, aged well beyond his middle years. He was skinny, overly so, and grey hair covered only part of his gaunt, pockmarked face. The way he was slumped against the wall, Loxley thought him dead at first. But as the man heard him draw closer, he inclined his head to face the boy, eyes dark and devoid of emotion and soul. He seemed like nothing more than a run down shell.

He couldn't help but take pity on the man. When was the last time he had eaten" Did he have a home? Did he have a family' Loxley felt as if there was little he could do for him, but he had to do something. Several gold coins were pulled from his pockets, and without counting them out, he knelt close to the man, who stared wordlessly to him. Reaching over, he carefully settled the coins in bony, leathery fingers before pushing his hands close to his body.

"That's not going to help him, Loxy."
