The doctor was middle-aged. He had served the youth of the city since starting his own practice. Children he treated brought their children to him. He lived only to practice medicine.

The past week had seen the good doctor very distracted. He had been seen in the company of a young lady, dining after his office closed, long walks in the park. Those who knew him best were happy to see him enjoying life outside the doctor's office. She was young, but she was bright, witty, and very attractive. She fit in well in the doctor's upper-class world. He was the envy of his peers.

The day came when the good doctor failed to show up at his office for scheduled appointments. The parents thought he'd gone on a trip with his lady friend, and simply was having too much fun to return.

The truth was not far off. He had gone off with his lady friend on an extended trip. She told him of a Tower where they could spend their remaining days together, without any distractions to separate them. The temptation was too much for the good doctor. He went with her like a lamb to the slaughter. His practice was abandoned. He was never seen in the city again.
