She is gone. All of them are gone.

Then you should return home, my brother.

Is there no reason to stay"

You tell me.

I wish I knew.

There is no correct answer, you know.

Is there ever"

You tell me.

Damnit, stop being so cryptic!

As if that is a possibility.

I don't know. I had thought...I had hoped...

I know, Cooper. You thought there was a chance. You hoped there was a chance.

I love being what I am. You know that. I could never be anything else. But...it gets so lonely...

Perhaps that is our lot. Meant to seek, meant to show, never to truly experience.

I don't believe that. I can't.

Then what will you do?

What I have always done, of course.

As you wish. You know you are welcomed home whenever you wish to return.

Thank you, Gabriel.

You don't have to thank me, Cooper.

~awake~

He opens his eyes, that strange, subtle ache in his temples as always.

"Yes, I do."

He sits up from his bed again, a heavy sigh breathed as he rests his head in hands, waiting for the subtle throb to subside.

Ever to seek, ever to show the way.

Never to truly experience.

That cannot be the way of things.

He knows the love of the Divine, knows that it should be enough for him.

And yet, in his own heart, he has always felt the yearning for something more.

He had thought he had found it...only to have it stripped away, snatched and stolen. The thought of being so close, and yet still so far, makes his heart ache.

And yet all he can do is let it go, give her his prayers, and hope that, perhaps one day, she will return to him.

But that hope is nearly nonexistent.

"Lord...let her find her way. Let her find her happiness, wherever it may lie. Watch over and protect and guide her."

As if in answer, the sun's first rays peek through his curtains, bringing the promise of a new day, though little more.

He stands, dressing for the new day, and heads for the door. Just as he lays his hand on the knob, he pauses, looking up to the heavens once more.

"Goodbye, Sidonie. My heart will be with you always."

He can feel the finality in that statement, and he senses that it is truly done.

Opening the door, he steps through it, into whatever waits beyond.
