Forsaken We Stand

It was never easy once the war started. Everyone had to hide out and hope that their home wasn't bombed next. Hope that their sons or daughters weren't taken to fight for a cause none of them believed in. It didn't matter how much you hid though. One day you would get the knock on your door to go fight in the war and die for an unjust cause. The day the knock came on my door was the day I decided I would change things. I wouldn't be just another no name, no face casualty in this war. I would be Feliks Bezukladnikov, the one who ended the war at last.

That was all fine, but as I answered the door I was scared. "Feliks we need you for the war." Those were the words that came out of the mouth from a face I would never forget. Burn scarred so badly with pale blue eyes shining through. "Refusal means death." Of course I knew that. Everyone knew that, but would death be so bad? The war would be over for me. I wouldn't have to hear the screams of dying men and women anymore. I'd be free from the cruelty of this world, but I couldn't refuse. I couldn't refuse because I didn't want people to have to keep on living this way. I wanted them to be free to live their lives and only join a war that had a just cause. Not a war that was only for power.

"I will come with you." I regretted those words, but they had to be spoken. "I'll be the best damn soldier you've ever had." I vowed this to him as we walked from the small shack I was living in. He just laughed at me and nodded. He'd probably heard this a thousand times over, but he didn't know this time it would be true. This time he would have a soldier fighting for something that could be believed in. A soldier fighting for peace, not power. For the world, not just for Russia.
