They say that through destruction, new life, a living orgasm can be born through the rubble. Like a phoenix, born from the ashes. Like a wildfire, consuming and eating a forest. One sprout can push through, a new beginning from the catastrophe. Creation, rebirth. The Natural Order.

"Don't forget the Stars."

She didn't remember the plummet. Spindly, coiled limbs wrapped in a safety blanket of pure, uncontainable energy. Galaxy eyes kept squeezed shut against the lashes taken from twilight hair that spun, lashed, moved through the wind like a living creature atop her head. Close your eyes, it'll be over before you know it. The airy, whispery tones of a woman's voice rattled inside her head, heard over the rushing and crushing of the fall. Curling into a ball of flesh and energy, like a fetus inside of a womb, her fingers sunk into the soft flesh of bruising biceps.

Falling farther and farther, holding a breath she didn't need as the Earth's crust drew closer and closer. Keep your eyes shut, it's almost over. The anticipation summoned a soft whimper from her lips, her eyelids crinkling with the effort to keep them shut tight. If she curled into a ball any further, she'd swear her spine would snap under the pressure.

And then it happened. The drop, the climax of the plummet that cratered the Earth in a spray of dust and debri. A meteor drop that was indistinguishable to the naked eye as anything but, a light burning bright against the night sky.

Thomas saw the meteor hit in the distance from his set up on a tall hill, sprawled on a blanket set against the damp grass. A way to pass time on sleepless nights, the man had been enjoying the twinkling of stars, one occasionally shot through the sky before it burned out and disappeared. This, however, was something different. He could see it coming from the hill, the smoldering ball that had broke through the atmosphere's barrier and was rocketing down toward the Earth.

As it neared, his shoulders pulled away from the blanket in his ascent to sitting up, eyes wide and mouth agape to the meteor that shot toward the Earth. Past a thin lining of trees that broke the field, he scrambled his lanky frame to his feet and took off at a full sprint. If anyone was going to discover this meteor first, it would be him. Running, and nearly tumbling down the hill like Jack from that old nursery rhyme, he let out a grunt as his long legs almost entangled and betrayed him. Catching his balance, he skidded toward the base of the hill and through the field toward the crater. His smile was etching high on his clean shaven cheeks, anticipation and curiosity twinkling in his eyes at the endless possibilities. The unknown data of space...What if I discover something new" I could be marked in history. I could get an award for my discoveries" Recognition in the scientific community, his utmost goal.

As he came up on the crater, with the dust slowly dissipating from the impact and the smoke clearing, the tree branches closest to the crater smoldering from the burning comet. Bending at the waist as he climbed the ridge of the crater. He was panting in short, clipped breaths as his muscles threatened to give up on him. He was a scientist, not an athlete of any caliber. Gripping the edge of the gaping hole in the ground, he peered slowly over the edge, squinting through the settling dust in the air.

".....What the?" He whispered, awestruck at what he discovered in that crater. "No?" His eyes dragged up to the sky, with the twinkling stars that the darting meteor had plummeting in a searing bright ball of flame toward the ground. "That's impossible," he whispered, lowering his eyes to the being centered in the crater. Realizing then, he winced. She's dead" there's no way she could survive that.. And that was when the panic began to set in.

* * * *

The She in question stirred. Nude flesh still coiled into a ball, scorched but unharmed against the heat of the impact and drop, leaving streaks of dust and dirt, debri from the collision of body and Earth.

Open your eyes, it's over.

"No, no, no?" Thomas whispered over and over, his hands lifting to each side of his head as it shook back and forth. This was not the kind of discovery he wanted to find. A dead body wasn't what he wanted to be remembered for. It was the stirring of the being at the base of that crater that had him stilling completely, oceanic blue against the twilight hour orbs that locked onto his. The meeting stole his breath as panic turned to pure shock. "She's" she's alive.."

Swan Song

The girl wasn't moving, apart from the slow closing and opening of lash lined lids over nearly black irises surrounded by midnight blue. Specks of light came from them, like glittering diamonds among the twilight. Curled into the fetal position, with dirt and dust as the only clothing she wore, Thomas was on the brink of panicking once more.

How is this possible" It's not. It can't be. A fall like that' she'd have not only been burned to ash, but' how"! Perplexed beyond recognition, the scientist was without a theory to fall back on. It was purely impossible. More than once, he even had to ball his fists and rub his eyes to make sure she was really there. A cliche gesture, but he was at a loss for anything else. Every time he opened his eyes, those glittering eyes stared back at him. Her only movements that slow blinking.

Clearing his throat, the scientist tried to speak up with a hoarse and timid voice. "Are" are you alright?" She shot to the ground like a torpedo, and made a massive crater. I'm sure she's fine. Shaking his head against his own sarcastic thoughts, he slowly climbed over the edge of the crater to embark on the dangerous slope downward. "Can' can you say something" Let me know you're okay?" He called down timidly, unnerved and shaking to his very core.

She didn't speak. Only blinked. Her eyes following his every move as he climbed down the steep slope of the crater's wall, his feet sliding as he almost lost his footing, just to catch it at the last moment. He was cautious in his approach, his hands shaking like a disease of the nerves as he reached the base of the hole. Swallowing hard, he glanced up and hoped he could get out of there. This is the end of it. I'm going to have climbed down here, and some space monster is going to eat me. This is it. I'm done for. Against all logical reasoning, he continued to approach the girl.

Is it safe"

He won't hurt you.

The Star Child's eyes stared intently on him. His movements, the ragged breaths he took as his heart threatened to leap from his chest with every step taken. At one point, she could've sworn she heard it. Felt it. Sensed it.

You're sensing the organism's life force.

Finally, she moved. As close as the man was, keeping eye contact proved to be a task in her position. Her head slowly turned to look up at him, her lips growing thin as she studied him drawing into a crouch next to her.

"Jesus?" He whispered, looking down the length of her with incredulous confusion. "How.." His eyes returned to hers, perhaps out of realization of her nudity and he held his hands out to her. It must've been the realization that she was truly there, that she wasn't a hallucination brought on by the scientist's insomnia. His expression grew serious, forcing himself to remain calm. "Miss, my name is Thomas Mitchell. I'm a scientist."

Scientist.

A curious human. Let him help you. Learn from him.

"Can you...stand" Move" Speak" I?" He was at a loss, completely, but he put forth the effort. "Here." The girl's studious eyes squinted as he worked out of his navy blue knitted sweater, leaving him in a pale grey v-neck tee shirt that had seen better days. "Can you sit up for me, miss?" Setting the sweater on his lap, he reached his hands out slowly and cautiously to assist her.

Her eyes followed his hands, breaking the eye contact but she didn't flinch away or object. Even as his hands slid under and over her shoulders, when she realized what he was doing, she worked herself into a seated position herself with his guiding hands. Lifting her chin to look at him, he looked astounded that she could move at all. "Fascinating," he whispered, blinking rapidly with a short shake of his head before he collected the hem of the sweater in his hands. "Let's cover you up," he suggested, holding the opening of the sweater out to her. "Can you hold out your arms, please?"

Thin lines of brows furrowed on the girl's dirty face as she looked at the cloth in his hands, at her arms when he spoke of them. For a moment, he didn't think she understood him until her arms rose to do as he asked, straight out and forward before he worked the cloth over her arms then slid it over her head. "This should keep you warm," he muttered, pulling the sweater down over her.

The girl's eyes lowered down to the blue sweater, her arms retracting in to tentatively touch the fabric with her fingertips. She looked confused at the unnecessary article of clothing, just to lift her gaze to his shirt. Before he could say or do anything, she was reaching for him, touching the grey fabric of his shirt with one hand while touching the sweater with her other. Making a connection, finding it's purpose.

To cover your modesty.

Her hands lowered from their clothing to her lap, looking up at him. His eyes locked onto hers, having watched the way she touched the clothes, like fitting a puzzle together in her mind. "We" can't just run around nude here.." He tried to explain, his own brows furrowing as he considered some head damage from the fall. "Can' you remember what happened?" She nodded. "Can you tell me your name?" She shook her head. "Where you're from?" Another shake of her head. "Can you tell me anything?" She stared at him for a long moment before her head slowly turned from side to side. He sighed, slowly nodding as he rose to his feet and held out his hands to her. "Can you stand?" He rattled off his last question before she nodded, reaching up to grasp his hands and he pulled while she pushed, rising to her bare feet.

Standing straight, she was no more than five-foot-two, a wisp of a creature with spindly thin limbs and hardly any weight to her at all. It perplexed him completely. This girl is what caused this crater" He shook his head before looking over his shoulder to the tall crater wall. "That's going to be a task to climb over," he muttered, but when he turned his head back to look at her, she was standing unnervingly close to him.

Her glittering eyes stared up at him, standing no more than two inches from his own mass as she seemed intent to tell him something.

"....Close your eyes," she whispered, her hands rising to press her fingertips to his cheeks as he instinctively closed his eyes upon flinching.

A second, a drop of a pin, a fraction of time.

When he opened his eyes, he stood at the mouth of the crater in the same position with her as they'd been at the base. She still stared, he still stood, her fingertips still pressed to the narrow slopes of his cheeks. What changed was the soft smile that made the dirt on her cheeks peek patterns among her pale skin, indents made into the flesh that he couldn't make out what they were. "It's over now," she promised, her voice soft but no less timid than his as she pulled her fingers away from his face.

His head turned with his gaze, wide eyed and surprised. Confused. Unsettled. "How did you?" He couldn't seem to form a coherent sentence, and he circled his eyes back to the ones staring up at him. "We need to get out of here, can I take you somewhere safe?"

Should I?"

Trust him.

She nodded slowly, her eyes lowering to the hand he held out for her to take and she grasped it with more trust than the stranger deserved. "Okay, I have a place not too far from here, just a few miles,? he told her, turning away from the crater before someone else found them. Before someone else took his discovery away. His hand tugged hers as he started away, but she was only seconds from following him, her head tipping back as she looked up to the night sky, twinkling as if nothing happened at all.

Goodbye, Star Child.
