Lore sighed softly as she braided her daughter's hair. Karmalore was big now, almost seven years old, and so worldly and clever for her age that it still shocked the mother. She was learning her role as the next Teller quickly. She knew many languages and spoke and wrote Common better than Lorelie could...But she missed her father. Lore poked into Rhydin on occaision to ask around about Toby per a promise to her child. But she dreaded it. Loathed it. She was terrified of seeing Toby again after so long. However, it was nice to see familiar friends, and to make new ones. Her friend, Hawk, visited her and Karma and it made her feel so childishly giddy. She loved him, she always had, and with Toby out of the picture, Hawk could stay with them. But was it fair for Karmalore to want to ruin the perfect picture by bring Toby back in their lives" Was it fair for Lore to keep a child from knowing her own father" Lore sighed and tied a ribbon on the end of Karma's chestnut colored braid and turned her around to look into the child's wide violet eyes. "I love you, Little Girl. You know there's nothing I won't do for you. You know that, don't you? You're my world" Karma blinked and smiled her gaptoothed grin. "I know, Mama. I love you too. I love you more than icecream" Lore patted the girl's freckled face affectionately, then followed her downstairs for breakfast. And just like that, the decision was made. Her visits would continue for her child's sake. ...But she would pray she never found him.

Lorelie walked into her house, smelling pancakes. After such a miserable night, breakfast was just what she needed. She heard her brother and her daughter talking in the kitchen. "Mommy?" Karmalore called. Lore wandered in and hugged the little girl where she sat working on her school work. She picked a bite of syruppy pancake off the girl's plate and sat beside her, looking at her school work. She reached to take it with one hand while licking the syrup off the fingers of her other hand. "Let me check your work, Sweetheart" But Karma snatched it away without looking. "Mommy, It's Common. You can't fix these problems. You wouldn't recognize the mistakes" Lore's brother, Haven, poked Karma in the arm and scowled at her. Karma just shrugged. Lore put her face in her hands and stared off dully, stung. "I've got the whole day to myself, Little Girl. How about you stay home today and we'll go somewhere fun" Just you and I?" Karma put her pen down and looked at her mother, her violet eyes studying the woman like a bug. Lore hated when she did that. She felt a pressure in her head and was about to tell her to quit when the child spoke. "Not a chance. You saw Hawk. I told you he wasn't dead." She paused, filing through Lore's thoughts like they were pieces of paper. "Only he isn't in love with you anymore. And he's going to avoid you. " She frowned. "No, if we went anywhere you'd only talk about him" She looked back at her papers. Lore and Haven both stayed silent. "Karma, you know I hate it when you pry into my personal thoughts..." She said wearily, then she plastered on a smile. "Besides, we can plan your birthday party! With all the time threads you've encountered lately, its so hard to believe you're eight years old already! I want to celebrate how grown up you are. Its my privilage as a mother. It'll be fun, Honey" Haven groaned and covered his eyes and Lore almost heard her daughter's neck squeak as she turned slowly to study her. The room cooled down and Karma's expression was hateful. "Had you been here a little more, instead of off having your little 'adventures', Mother" You'd know I already planned it." The girl said softly, her voice icy. "In fact, had you made time for anyone else in your life...you wouldn't be so upset and miserable all the time. But you wander in and out of everyones life at will. You can't just show up and expect people to wait for you!" She stood , up and handed Lore another piece of paper, then walked to the door. "I'm going to class now. You have the itenerary for my party but I don't want you there, Mommy. You don't care about the effort it takes to love anyone so you lose all the privilages of love. " She walked out the door and slammed it. Lorelie felt tears brimming in her eyes and she looked at Haven, expecting sympathy. "You're always gone, Lori. She needs her mother. I'm sorry." She stood slowly and studied the paper, her daughters neat, perfect hand. 'Karma's 10th Party' It said in bright red letters. How much time had she lost' And was it too late to make it up to the ones she loved?

Karma's birthday had been a success. Lots of little girl's running around and trashing the house. Lots of food and games and a ton of gifts. Best of all, Lorelie thought as she got ready to leave, She had made amends with her daughter and got to enjoy the party. She grabbed her bag and her book and quill. Time to do her job and if there was enough time before Karma got home from her Aunt Succi's tomorrow, she might get to visit the Red Dragon and see her friends. She had to talk to Mayu, fix a few things and maybe have a little fun

Lorelie sipped her beer and looked around, bored. She hoped Mayu would show up. It'd been days and she'd checked at the Red Dragon as often as she could, but no Mayu. She sighed as Toby Aradam gave her the stink eye. Gawds, what WAS that kid's problem' She smiled sweetly and raised her middle finger to him as she sipped her beer. She had always thought he was a nice guy but after their little confrontation....well...to hell with him. She would try to stay out of his way because he was Mayu's friend but really! She hadn't done anything to him and she resented his dislike for her. He made her short tempered and irritated but she couldn't quite get to anger. She gave him a small shake of her head and let her amythst eyes wander around the room, impatiently. After a few moments she zoned out, occaisionally watching the antics of the other patrons to amuse herself. After a few impatient hikes behind the bar for another beer, Mr. Know It All spoke up. "She's not going to show up, you know. You're wasting your time." Lore frowned. She considered ignoring him but couldn't help it. "Any time spent waiting to see her isn't wasted" she said with a curt nod. She sat down and tried to avoid eye contact. .....But his mouth was already in motion. She knew that this kid was never going to leave her alone. She settled into her seat to have a night long smack talking competition. Ah, the things we do for love.
