Thunder rolled across the plains of Asgard. Thick snow swirled like millions of tornados as the thin flicker of a man moved between them nearly unseen. The man moved quickly on his unknown mission. A howl cut the night air freezing the man in his tracks. "Yes son...this will work...Odin will pay for crossing me.." the thin man's face twisted into a snarl nearly as menacing as the howl heard across the plain. The man made a standing leap across a rift in the plain. The jump so easy for him would normally be deemed impossible. He landed deftly on a frozen riverbed. Below him he could see the shrine, built by the gods themselves. Inside he knew what rested there. His son the wolf, Fenrir the Wolf, chained and punished for the fear that lived in the great god Odin. The doors to the shrine creaked and hissed as they pushed open. Snow swirled inside as if trying to escape the cold that kept it present throughout this area of Asgard. A broken growl rumbled over the marble floor, " Loki" My father....have you come back?" "Yes....I am ready." In the dark the massive wolf could be seen chained to the earth. The chain so unmenacing had been his son's downfall and the end of Loki's plan to assume control of Asgard from Odin. Built by the dwarfs of Asgard it was thus far unbreakable. Shaking his shaggy black body he rose facing the thin, unimposing god. "Father, I want to repay these gods for crossing our family....this must work. The power of Ragnarok I control shall be unleashed on this land and these cowardly gods." "It will work my son.....I will place this crystal on your head. It will draw all manner of good from you. It will push the weakness from your body, once all the good is gone your true evil strength will reign. Break the chains....kill Odin." The great wolf's eyes normally black glowed red. "With pleasure father." Reaching into a sack on his side Loki removed the glowing crystal. As if predicting future events the wind ripped around the shrine, thunder crashing and lighting strikes crackling the air around them. A soft mutter of unintelligible words cause the light to pick up around the stone. Placing it upon the wolf's head Loki stepped back. Raising one hand with a flick of his wrist he ended the chant. The gem pulsed once. With a sharp howl of pain Fenrir collapsed and trembled. The glowing stone sinking into his black fur and skull. Concerned Loki stepped forward, wondering if he had just sealed his own son's doom with poor research. A blast of energy sent the god Loki spinning like a rag doll to the other side of the Shrine. A small marble dwarf statue shattering like glass as the god hit it. The wold writhed on the ground, light emitting from his maw as if the light itself was trying to split him in half. Loki rose quickly in time to see his son lurch forward a wolf cub tumbling from the putrid and yellow jaws. The cub yelped and slid across the marble coming to rest near Loki's feet in a wet mass. Fenrir laid back eyeing the whelp. Weakly he stammered, " Wh...What is this?!" A snarl crossing his features. Loki eyed the pup confused himself. " The....The gem...You should have left the gem. I was supposed to destroy the gem to complete this ceremony." " Then kill this thing now! Just looking at it causes me pain. I can taste the good in it. I feel weaker, and it is because of this beast, I know it." Loki paused looking to his son and then the wolf cub laying motionless at his feet. " Yes, kill it. I will throw it into the divide, I'll let the dwarfs clean up the mess." Loki knew he could not spill the cub's blood in the shrine without leaving evidence of his involvement in this conspiracy. Loki reached down to get the cub as he looked to his son. " In a moment Ragnarok will begin and Asgard will be ours." He swept the cub under his cloak and hurried from the shrine. Fenrir's dark eyes closing as he rested from the ordeal. The snowstorm which had begun was nearly blinding as Loki made his way towards the rift he had previously crossed. As he made his way there he removed his knife to slit the cubs throat ensuring its death should a long fall not do the trick. The movement caused the still wet and small cub to slip from his grip. Once in the snow the cub seemed to take on a life and speed that appeared magically granted. It started jumping up and running from the god. " Blast!" he yelled the cold wind stealing the air from his lungs. He chased the wolf cub along the plain approaching the precipice that led to the land of Dwarfs. Loki knew the fall would kill any god or man. As he chased the cub he himself became blinded by the near whiteout of the storm. He could just see in the distance the wolf cub running. Then just as suddenly he saw the small animal disappear from sight. He stopped looking down into the emptyness where the cub was last seen. Shaking his head he considered going down to ensure the deed was done. Thunder rumbled from the mist beneath him. Concerned one of the dwarven warriors below would see him he decided against following up on the lucky fall of the wolfling. Leaping to the otherside he quickly made his way back towards the Great City. He would need to account for his absence. He could check on his unconcious son at a later time. -=-=- In the mist the Dwarves looked at the cub which had fallen from the skies. " By Thor, it is the spitting image of the Great Wolf, Fenrir." A gold armored dwarf knight stepped forward. " Yes, I see in his eyes, there is great power in this cub. He is important. But he should not share the same evil name. We will call him FenrisWolf. How this whelp survived such a fall I know not. He is strong. Take him to the city and tomorrow I will look into where he came from and why he so resembles the great evil beast." Two more warriors stepped forward bowing, " Yes Highness." The warriors scooped the cub up and hurried it through the cavernous opening to the Dwarf city.

A fire crackled loudly in the Dwarf King's Great Hall. Nearby the shadows danced across the floor to a chair holding the armored King. The reflection of the flames made it look as though a burning body sat motionless in the chair. At the dwarf's feet a wolf cub ate heartily from the night's dinner remains. The two were the only beings in the hall, odd for this city and for this Great Hall. The rumor mill had begun in the dwarven city and many did not trust the new fallen friend of the King. Many believed it to be an omen that Fenrir the Wolf was to break his binds soon. The King did not see quite such dark times ahead. " Here my hungry friend..." he muttered as he leaned down pushing additional spoils taken from the dinner. He leaned back into the chair with a soft groan as the cub sniffed the new offering, before diving in. The sight brought a smile to the King's face. The cub had healed at near incredible rates from it's death defying fall. It also grew faster than he anticipated. Already it was nearly the size of a young dwarf boy. The great door creaked and a dwarf warrior entered. " High Lord Helgrim?" "Yes?" the King said rising from the seat to face the newcomer. The cub only looked with his eyes never ceasing his chewing. "Odin's emissary is here. You requested to be notified." "Very good Halfnirm. Bring him here." The King slid the chair away as to clear a path to the door. As the King approached a single Raven flew into the room through the open door. Cawing loudly it landed on the chair back facing the King. " High Lord, Odin sends his deepest respects and regrets not coming in person." " It is no problem! I wished only to appraise him of a recent addition to my city. I fear though that this "gift" from the heavens is beginning to divide my city. It's been only 3 months, and I have tossed back and forth with what to do." The raven looked about the room then back to the King, " What is this "gift" you speak of?" The King waved his arm and hand in a presentory manner showing the cub eatting at his feet. "A wolf cub Lord" I see no city straining issue with it's High Lord having a pet." The King grimaced, " I wouldn't..." Growling the cub faced the raven bearing rows of sharp and white shining teeth. A tingling caressed the bird's mind causing him to caw loudly and hover off the chair. "...necessarily call him a pet," the King cleared his throat, "More of a guest!" He looked to the angry wolf, " Fenris...calm....he is a friend." The wolf, his emerald eyes glowing with a dull red glow released the raven causing it to flap its wings and re-seat itself. " I...I...I see....You name this...'guest' after the great evil world eater"!" " I thought it suiting...he resembles the monster only in appearance." " And power apparently....", the Raven cawed and landed on the seat of the chair to better look at the animal. " Yes, and this is where I must notify Odin, something is wrong with my friend, and soon I fear I won't be able to satisfy my people unless I kill him. That I fear may do more harm than good." The raven's head cocked slightly and he looked to the King, " There is certainly good in him. I can see only light in his soul. That is what is odd, all persons show the potential for darkness. It is a balance. This 'friend' seems to have none or at least very little in him. He is certainly capable of attaining great power, that I see too." " Will you bring him to Odin?" " I think it best I bring Odin to him. Hold him here Highness, remind your people this is only a temporary guest. Try to limit the chatter in the halls I think there is more going on here than meets the eye. Better we keep things quiet about your Fenris friend." " Aye..." the King bowed and the Raven flew off, disappearing before making it to the doorway.

Helgrim could no longer carry the cub. He walked side by side with the beast now as large as he was. It had only been a little over a month and Odin finally requested his presence. Although the meeting was not at the Great City of Asgard it was out amoung the mountains that preceeded the City from the Dwarven lands. Standing near an icy river was the great god. His massive structure looked more imposing as the wolf and dwarf lord approached. The wolf appeared more distracted by moving snow drifts and flying animals. As the two came before the god Helgrim came to one knee bowing his head. " Great Odin, this is the animal I told your emissary of." " Yes Helgrim, I know. I would surely hope you did not bring some other strange animal." His chuckle was so loud it shook the snowy ground around the two beings before him. " Well, well little wolf. What have we here?" he looked the animal over. " I named him Fenris lord. He so resembles the monster." " Yes I see. I think Loki's hand has been played here." " I feared this as well sire." Helgrim rose to his feet as he spoke. " I can no longer hide him in my city. I know nothing of the affairs in Asgard, but I beg you take your hand in this." " I will, I like this animal. There is much good in him, I can see great things in this cub's future." He patted the back of the wolf motioning for it to come closer. The wolf moved slowly closer to the gentle giant. " Fenris hm' Well Fenris, you don't speak?" A glimmer in the wolf's eyes and what appeared to be a grin spread across the features of the wolf. " I do....no one has asked much of me, just about..." Shocked Helgrim looked on. "Amazing..." it was all he was able to mutter. " Where are you from child?" " If I could answer I would. I know nothing before waking in the bed of the Dwarf lord. He took great care with me. I will repay him." Fenris turned bowing his massive head towards Helgrim. " I am sure you will." Odin nodded. " I think it best we keep you hidden. I will take you to the remote Asgardian Monestary. The monks there have a nack for instruction in some arts you will find useful. After time I will make plans for seeing what else useful you may provide this realm." " As you wish....and what now?" " Well, now say good-bye to your friend son. You will come with me. After I get you situated, I think I need to look in on Loki and his affairs. See if a trail leads to your appearance." The god scooped up the wolf and disappeared in a flash. " Thank you Helgrim...your service to the realm is never forgotten." the voice rumbled from the air like thunder. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Loki cursed and threw items at the walls. Months had passed since the ceremony. Why was his son still imprisoned. The cub killed and the chains still unbroken, the prophecy associated with those soul stones was false. He leaned heavily on the book case when the announcement came. " Loki," the voice was Thor's, " My father commands you to the Aesir Hall." " Commands....yes....thats my lot here..." He turned facing the warrior god. " Well then lets go...neither of us want him angered." The two god walked to the Hall. In the hall Odin sat on a massive chair. Nearby, meats and fruits abound on a table. Eatting some of the meat Odin turned to look at Loki. " Ah! Loki!" he called out standing from his chair. " Yes Great one?" he muttered with a bow. " I wanted you to know that the Dwarfs came to me. They had to bury a wolf that fell from the sky to their kingdom. They called me because it resembled one of your foul offspring. You wouldn't know anything about this would you?" " Oh Great One, you insult me. What furthering would the creation of another wolf be for the realms?" He moved to the food table distracting himself with an apple. " Yes, yes....well I thought I would present it to you. The body was burned. The dwarfs fear it is a sign." " I don't think there is much to fear! I would give my life for the realms. I know my son is a menace." " Very good....I thought I would at least give you this information. Maybe I'll keep a closer eye on Fenrir myself." " As you wish Great one." Loki bowed deeply and slinked off into the shadows before the questions could continue. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=—=—=-

Years passed uneventful as they could be for the Asgardians. Odin stopped by to check on the wolf as much as he could. He had grown very attached to the wolf. He treated it as he would a son. He admired the wolf's power and ferocity. Training had shown he was as fierce a fighter as he himself was. On this particular day Odin arrived in the Monestary and looked to the monks for direction to his adopted son. " Great Lord Odin, at your son's request he wished for you to find him." Odin sighed, " I wish I had the time for this....just direct me to him." " The arena Sire."

Odin made his way to the arena, inside the monks were sparring. One stood centered while several other attempted to attack the lone defender. The warrior held off the attackers, swinging a staff and pushing the attackers off their feet with imposing hand to hand strikes.

" Look, get Fenris. I must speak with him. I don't have time for games."

A voice called out from below in the arena. " A good thing father! I grow tired of playing them." Odin looked down and the able monk dropped the hood on his robes uncovering a dark haired man. His green eyes glimmered and glowed as he looked up to the god. " Fenris....?" " Yes! I've learned a thing or two while here. The monks have interesting abilities." " I..I see...." " Oh you do?" the once wolf man disappeared. Appearing beside the god he grasped him in a hug now standing as tall as Odin himself. " This is amazing...and fitting for what I'm going to tell you." " Yes father?" " I want you to return to the city as my son." " The Great City' I...as your son?" " You call me father out of respect why not justify it and I care for you as much as any son I have." " Thank you father! When do I leave?" " Now if your able....and from what I can see you are." " Yes..." Fenris chuckled looking over to the monk that had escorted Odin. " You and everyone here have cared for me. I will take your teachings with me forever. I don't think it's possible to thank you enough." " No need sire..." Fenris darted down the halls to retrieve his things. " Lord, I must speak with you...about your son." " Yes?" " Well during his teachings we have stressed the importance of staying neutral and calm. He is a ferocious fighter and some powers outside what we have taught him have emerged. Although he feels we taught them to him we did not." Odin nodded and smiled. " I understand, I've not witnessed any shape changing monks in the realms of late." " Yes sire, well as well he controls a destructive power. I lost one trainer to a loss of control on your son's part. He did not mean to cause him harm I don't think he even realized that the damage was so severe until later. It is like the powers of Ragnarok flow through him as they do through Loki's offspring. Fenris is a good being but young, he lacks the understanding right now of what his role in life is or how powerful he is and can be." " I understand, fear not, I have a place for him. I saw the power in him when we first met. I will do what I can to direct it correctly, better that then having him travel Fenrir's path." The monk nodded and bowed taking his leave as well while Odin went to meet his new son. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=-
