If anyone told you the scenic views weren't the best part of space travel, they were lying.

The view you get right after breaking through the atmosphere is breathtaking. It will literally rob you of any breath. Your heart skips a beat, the hairs on your arm prickle, and it's as though time stands still.

It was Duci's favorite part of being a spaceship pilot: the views. You can't replicate them or find them anywhere else.

This was a large part of why Duci easily fell back into it; it made her happy. Flying through space gave her a kind of zen where she felt at peace. Like being in paradise with no problems and endless opportunities.

The universe, or multiverse depending on how you see it, is full of endless beauty. Each planet has its own appeal. Some she loved arriving in more than others, but Rhy'din was home. Her breath caught in her throat every time she flew back, a moment's hesitation to admire it from above before docking at port.

Yeah, Rhy'din was home.

In the constellation Cygnus, rests a planet called 'Zeus.' The only sunlight it gets is similar to dusk, never too bright, but it's a quaint planet. Time passes quickly there, but the inhabitants are delightful and the views unforgettable. Nearby is the planet 'Leda,' a ringed planet that is beautiful to behold in the night sky when you're swimming in the resort lake. Both planets were colonized, so to speak, by aliens full of Greek mythology many moons ago. As you may tell, they primarily choose to worship Zeus.

White columned buildings dominate the densely forested land, ringing pockets of lakes. The weather is cool year round, but the water warm from the internal temperature of the planet. The population is small and diverse, and most properties are communally shared between people.

While Duci hasn't spent much time on Zeus, she knows the Ledans (as they like to call themselves) are simple people who make sacrifices to the gods and believe in the perusal of knowledge. Their appetites for learning are vociferous, and they're extremely accepting. However, throwing parties is their specialty. It is part of why she chose to vacation at Olympus, their only resort. While they hold regular celebrations year-round, Olympieia is their biggest event. Celebrated in the Spring, this festival is held in honor of Zeus, combining religious festivities with athletic events.

Coming for Olympieia made her think of home. Essentially it was the Terrans version of the Olympics, but it was still done as if in Ancient Greece. She spent all day cheering and indulging in the festivities before she quietly returned to Olympus. Drinking oinops, the local wine, she dropped her toga to her ankles and gingerly stepped out of it. Headed for the water, she waded out until water lapped at her calves. The water was so warm and inviting that she dropped down, easing into a reclined position where she propped herself up on an elbow. Water tickled at her shoulders and she smiled to the nearest patron and newfound friend, Kyleah. Kyleah was a beautiful, lithe local, but she was also blue and had appendages protruding from her skull and down to her ankles. Her husband was something else entirely, a large, rocky man. They were nice and companionable though, and she would miss these quiet, pondering evenings when she left in a few days.

Duci's hometown had a limit to the green grass. It was part of why aerodefense was so popular out of the Colony; it had the perfect terrain and weather conditions. Adorjan was one of their neighbors and also one of her best friends. They used to run to the northern-most edge of the fields, long after the town had tapered off and the dusty, rocky desert began its vast expanse to fly kites. Out here there was no light pollution, no towering columns of ivory, no adults telling you to get back to your studies...There was only the howl of wind, or dead silence on a rare day, and you could see stars and galaxies beyond the haze of dust. Here, they shared aspirations, fears, secrets....and their first kiss.

It's also where he died and her first dreams of piloting away from that glimmering oasis were hatched.

It was getting colder in Rhy'din, so she took a detour. Someone had been smuggli— er, transporting goods of questionable nature to the Andromeda gaalxy. She dropped the buyer and his stuff off at an undisclosed location before setting back for Rhy'din. She hesitated, though, remembering Mirach in Andromedae. She could use soaking rays at the beach, couldn't she?

So she redirected, rerouting her flight coordinates.

Mirach was also the name of the sun, a star in the Andromeda constellation, but the picturesque beach town was on the planet Pflieorgh that orbits it. Pflieorgh was mostly water with only one large landmass and thousands of islands dotting the blue expanse. Mirach was on the southern most edge of the continent, exposed to the most sunlight year-round. The temperature was always a moderate 78 degrees, though it dropped to the 50s at night with a warm breeze. Days were longer here and nights were short. Sometimes rain and lightning would burst from the suddenly blackened sky, but only lasted for 30 minutes before dispersing to sunny, aquamarine skies tinged with blood.

Everything here was high-tech. Small, glass buildings dotted the beaches, higher up where they were isolated for privacy. The windows doubled as electronics, and in the kitchen all you had to do was select what you wanted to eat and it would appear like magic. Anything you desired was instant and that almost made her ache for the familiar home cooked meal. There was something about a freshly cooked meal by an individual that touched her to the soul.

She didn't know who originally inhabited this planet, or if anyone did at all before colonization. Now, it was a thriving mecca with an eclectic mix of races. The planet had lots of volcanoes, which meant it was rich in the jewel business. Many came to mine, and many struck rich. Perhaps one day the jewel business would be sucked dry, but that didn't appear that it would happen anytime soon. With cutting edge technology, they could detect jewels with expert precision and without harming them. It always pleased her to hear they tried to leave things the way they found them with their specialized world-building devices...whatever that meant.

Hovercrafts provided tours and led patrons to the the bustling capital Fieros, several miles north of the sleepy resort. Duci did not indulge in the finery of the capital this time, though. Instead she grabbed the Helping Hand device and a towel before heading to the beach. Parking herself in a lounge, she hit the screen for a daiquiri.

It was certainly paradise, or at least an escape from responsibility.

Here, hidden among the fronds, was where she decided she would relax for a few days. Maybe months...Maybe forever.

Or until she gets too lonely.

Duci loved the grungy, space-age feel of tropical Sin City. In a futuristic version of Terra Nova, the Casinos reach the sky. Literally. Paparazzo flash their cameras left and right and everyone feels glamorous and glitzy while they drink their money away. That's also literally. When you walk into a casion, you're required to set up a bracelet that syncs to your bank account. With each bet, each drink, your bank is automatically charged. Makes it real easy to rack up a fortune in under an hour.

She was helping a client unload crates of questionable background, but refrained from commenting. If she got nosy with everyone she worked with, she would probably find herself dead. The space station was just a few steps away from a casino, and her client, who went by the name Alonso, offered her a drink.

"Alright," she agreed with a smile, but not before continuing with a wag of her finger, "As long as you promise to be good." This wasn't their first rodeo and he rarely behaved, but that was half the fun.

He took her to his place, the penthouse suite of the Venetian. It provided a beautiful view of their very own Louvre, and with a setting sun, she allowed him to make dinner before taking her own a sinful tour of the town....He lost a lot of money, but she didn't.

A friend of Duci's from Koch Holdings, Lyssandra, was getting married and Duci had been invited to her bachelorette back at her home in Terra Nova two days before the wedding. She immediately fell in love with the modern planet, enjoying the sunshine and shopping available.

The party was being held at a strip club, aptly named 'The Cockpit.' The blonde was buying drinks and they reserved all the best seats in the house. The groom paid for lap dances for all and then Duci added in a special private dance for all the ladies who wanted one, too.

They even got to touch! It was safe to say the Bride and her entourage, as well as the blonde, all returned to their rooms that evening (morning, whatever) very happy.

Duci's spine was rigid as she sat on the edge of the bed and stared out the window. She heard the rustle of Heath's clothes as he pulled them on, the clattering and hushed swears as he stumbled to collect everything and get dressed in the semi-darkness.

She felt dirty, polluted. Sleazy. Easy. Her lips thinned into a fine line and she closed her eyes when he put his hand on her shoulder. His mouth opened and closed, followed by a sigh of disappointment.

It wasn't until after she heard the door safely latch shut behind him that she loosened, tipping over and pooling across the bed to rain.

Space the only witness to her anguish.
