"Murelle, this is heavy! What is it?" Borin grunted as he hoisted a large box on to the back of the wagon.

"You'll see! It's a surprise." Murelle replies with a grin. Gwyn bounced up and down on the balls of her feet, a wide smile on her face. She was in on the secret and was excited to be in on her mother's plans.

"Can't you give me a hint?" Borin asked as he climbed up onto the wagon's seat. Murelle followed him and Gwyn stayed in the back of the wagon to 'guard' the box.

"Let's just say it's a tradition I grew up with. It's high time I practiced it here." Murelle said with a sly smile.

Actually, Murelle had a good reason to carry on the traditions she grew up with. It was getting close to that horrible time when Llewyss was killed in the Dark Forest by the Chalkotu and she needed to be distracted rather than fall into depression again.

Borin grunted in reply, then slapped the reins of the horses. In a secluded spot Murelle climbed down and dropped the portal stone, immediately the portal opened to the small realm near Murelle's home. She waited to let Borin through and followed him in, picking up the stone the portal closed immediately. Without the stones, it was a three day trip over the mountains that border Eldicor.

Once at her cottage, Borin reined in the horses then climbed down. Murelle also climbed down then jogged to the cottage where she opened the door then helped Borin get the box out of the wagon. It was heavy; she directed it to be carried to the living room. Once the box was set down, Borin straightened with a groan then stopped and with eyebrows raised he asks;

"Mure". Why is there a pine tree in your cottage?"

Laughing, Murelle just said, "You'll see."

"There."

Murelle stood back to gaze at her work. For a full week she had been busy. The villagers would come and watch as Murelle hung lights and pine garland, festooned with red bows. They would murmur and point at the work. She recruited a couple of strapping young men to help with lights at the peak of the cottage porch. She didn't have electricity, so she picked up some battery packs at the Stars End area to light the tiny bulbs.

A little girl tugged at her jacket. Murelle looked down at her with a smile.

"Yes?"

"What are you doing?" Her wide brown eyes stares at the cottage then back up at Murelle.

"What's your name sweetie?"

"Angelia."

"Well, Angelia, where I come from we celebrate what is called the Yule. Some call it Christmas, but it's the same thing. We decorate and have parties, give away presents and eat too much. It's fun! I'll be having a party." Mure replied with a smile.

She jumped up and down. "Really' Can I come?"

Murelle laughed. "Of course. Everyone will be invited."

"Will the queen be there?"

"Yes. I believe so." Murelle stroked the little girl's head. Her eyes got wider and ran to her friends, declaring what Murelle told her at the top of her lungs.

"A party! And the queen will be there!"

Picking up her hammer and nails she chuckled. This was going to be fun. She loved parties and it had been too long since she threw one. The inside of the cottage had been decorated too. The Yule tree was decorated with tiny white lights, ornaments of different shapes and hues were hung carefully. On top of the tree, a gold star glowed. Gold and silver garland was tucked in the branches. Under the tree were about one hundred gifts that were wrapped. Mostly for the children. They were separated by age and sex. Not expensive ones, but ones from Earth that would be a novelty. Of course she would give gifts to her friends, she was glad she saved all her tips and pay from her time as barkeep.

Murelle stopped to give the tree one last critical examination. She adjusted a couple of the bulbs. Looking around at the doorways, they were lined with pine garland; again lights were woven in the branches. More red ribbons were attached to the corners and center. In the middle of the living room, hanging from the rafters was the mistletoe. It was tied with a white ribbon about 7 feet above the floor. The Yule log sat next to the fireplace, ready for burning.

She sighed happily. It was perfect. The next job would be to send out invitations.

A fresh cup of coffee, her computer and printer set up, Murelle sat at the table. It was one she found these in the Stars End Computer and Artificial Intelligence Store that didn't require electricity, it ran on the most remarkable power pack.

"Mom, what?s for dinner?" Gwyn asked hanging on the back of Murelle's chair.

"What do you want?"

"Hamburgers." She said decidedly.

"You can make those, you're old enough." Murelle says with a smile. "You know how to work the stove."

"Oh boy!" Gwyn squeals and darts for the kitchen. It was a wood stove; Murelle taught her how to light it safely and cook simple meals. Soon the sounds of pans and noise from preparations came from the kitchen. The smell of the hamburgers made Murelle's mouth water. She realized she hadn't eaten all day. The decorating and thoughts of the party kept her distracted from her growling stomach.

She looked at the list of those whom she was going to invite. She didn't want to leave anyone out, friends she made when she was a barkeep, those she knew through Teleperien, spacers from the Stars End....it was a long one. Of course those in the village would be invited, as their Baroness; she wanted to have good relations.

The invitation itself was 5 by 7 inches, cream colored thick paper bordered with holly branches. Murelle sat back and pondered what to say. Gwyn proudly carried the finished hamburgers to the table and set a plate near Mure's elbow.

"Thank you Gwyn." Absently she picked up the burger and took a bite, it wasn't quite cooked all the way through.

"Is it good Mom?" Mure nodded and gave her a hug. Murelle ate it anyway. She was thinking. Setting down the hamburger, she leaned over the keyboard.

WE ARE HAVING A YULE PARTY!

It would bring great pleasure if you could join me and Gwyn in the celebration of the Yule! It will be held December 23rd starting at 5pm at my house in Eldicor. Bring the whole family; this will be a time of fellowship, good food and drink, and presents! Please RSVP by December 20th, you can leave messages at the Red Dragon Inn or by any means you have. If you need directions, please let me know.

In the service of the Queen; Murelle GreyMantle Baroness.

Setting back, she took a sip of her coffee and stared at the screen.

"About as good as it's going to be I guess."

She formatted the text and started the printer. Soon printed cards were piled on the table. She stuffed them into envelopes and started to hand write those who she invited with gold ink on the envelopes. It took some time and she had to stop a couple times to stop her hand from cramping. But finally it was finished. Wearily she gazed at the pile of invitations.

"There. Next job' get them delivered. I'll do that tomorrow."

Sipping her morning tea, Teleperien was reading the latest missive from the Northern reaches of Eldicor. Sighing she looks out the window to see snowflakes gently float down. Tom busied himself by organizing his desk. A knock on the door surprised her. It was Murelle, holding a bag full of envelopes.

"Baroness! Please come in!"

The small woman, bundled up against the weather, walked in. Behind her Gwyn looked up at the queen shyly and smiled.

"Would you both care for some tea?" Tele asked as she walked to the bell rope.

"Yes, that would be lovely." Murelle answered with a smile.

Gesturing to a couple of chairs, the queen says; "Please, take your coats off make yourself comfortable." Pulling the rope, she turned and sat in her own overstuffed chair. Lucy appears at the door.

"Yes M"Lady?"

"Could you bring tea for two more?"

"Yes, M"Lady." Lucy curtsied and left.

They exchanged small talk until the tea arrived. When the door was closed, Tele asks; "What brings you here Murelle?"

Opening the bag of envelopes she pulled one out that was addressed to the queen and handed it to her.

"I am having a Yule celebration, and I would be honored if you and Erwyn would attend."

Taking the envelope the queen carefully opened it and drew out the invitation. She smiled as she read it and nodded. "Of course I'll come. I"m sure that Erwyn would love to attend as well."

At that a quick knock and the door opened, Erwyn pokes her head in. She smiles when she sees Murelle and Gwyn. "Hello! I didn't know we had guests!"

"They came with an invitation to a?" Tele looked at the card again, "Yule Party."

That got Erwyn's attention. "A party! How fun!" She fully entered the room and took the card when Teleperien handed it to her. "Who else will be there?"

"I"ve invited quite a few, I need to get one to Xenograg, and I was hoping you?d help me there." Murelle answered with a hopeful glance.

"I can take it to him." Erwyn replies. Murelle shuffles the envelopes and finds one addressed to the Darelir Clan. Handing it to Erwyn she says; "Thank you. I appreciate the help."

Finishing her tea, Murelle sets the china cup down carefully.

"I hate to rush out, but I have a lot of invitations to deliver."

Teleperien asked one thing of her. "I would like the subjects in the different areas of Eldicor to attend would that be agreeable to you?"

Murelle nodded. "Of course, they would be most welcome." Tele smiled and thanked her. She stood, and watched as they put their coats back on.

"Do you think I can employ a couple of helpers to deliver some of these?" Murelle asked hopefully.

"Of course. There are a few I use for missives and deliveries. I will send them to your cottage. I will also employ some to deliver invitations to the other towns."

Murelle smiled. "Thank you, there are quite a few here and I need help." Teleperien walked Murelle to the door. A last goodbye was said and Murelle left.

Tom the hobbit couldn't stay silent. "A party!?"

"I am sure you will be welcomed Tom." Tele answered with a smile. The hobbit smiled widely and happily set about his work.

Slumping in a chair, Murelle gave a huge groan. She had been gone all day delivering invitations. She stood and went to the computer and printed out more invitations for the outlaying regions of Eldicor. She had one left. Wyheree's. She didn't know her well, but she was friends with Xenograg and Toby. How to get it to her" Perhaps one of those two could help out. Getting up she pulled her coat back on.

"Gwyn, I'm going to the castle. I won't be long."

"Okay Mom." Came the reply from her bedroom.

The snow had started up again, covering her garden with a white blanket. Trudging up the cobbled streets she was greeted cheerfully. The promise of a party had made its way through the village and of course excitement was high.

She was hailed as she walked through the gate and when she entered the castle, Erwyn called out to her. "Baroness! Twice in one day!"

"Erwyn! I wanted to see if you could help me out. I need to see Xenograg, can you help" Also I have extra invitations for those outside Sawrey. Your mother wishes to invite those in out laying areas."

"Yes! Give me the invitations, I'll give them to her and I'll tell mother we're going to see Xenograg. Let me tell mother and I'll take you to him."

She disappeared down the hallway and returned quickly. "Follow me."

Murelle almost had to run to keep up with the long legs of the elven princess. Through the library, up the stairs to a room Murelle never saw before. A large mirror stood against the wall, Erwyn held something against the glass.

"Step through." Erwyn instructed.

Hesitating, Murelle did so. She was astonished to see she stepped into a large paneled room. Erwyn followed her, pocketing what she held to the mirror.

"This way."

Murelle followed, looking around as she went. "This is Xenograg's Dojo. I trained here when I was growing up." Erwyn explained.

They entered another room where she could see Xenograg sitting....watching a group of warriors going through their paces. He must have sensed their presence; he turned and gestured to them to wait. Murelle was a little nervous, she watched as the men practice the art of war. Her mind went back to the battle in the Dark Forest. She had seen them then, and was impressed by their stoic presence. After a few minutes Xenograg halted the exercise and called for a break. Amanda appeared, surprised to see Murelle.

"Hello Erwyn, you brought a guest!"

"I"ve come to speak with your father." Murelle explained. Xenograg had joined them by now and welcomed Murelle.

"Thank you Baron, I have a problem you might help with. I need to get one last invitation to my Yule Party to Wyheree. You know her better than I do and I have no way of knowing how to get it to her."

"I'll get it to her." He replied. Murelle handed him the envelope.

"I really appreciate it. Thank you."

He bowed his head solemnly and pocketed the invitation. "Can we show you around the place?" Amanda asks with a smile. Murelle shook her head.

"I have to get back, but thank you for helping me. I'll take you up on your offer after the Yule."

Polite words were exchanged, Amanda walked with Erwyn and Murelle to the room with an identical mirror to the one in the tower. The two friends hugged, Murelle still looking around.

"Come back soon!" Amanda calls as she leaves the room. Again, something was pressed to the mirror and she was instructed to step through, she was back in the castle. Erwyn followed.

"I have never had an experience like that in my whole life." Murelle exclaimed. Erwyn laughed.

Back at the cottage, it was starting to get dark. Time to make dinner, while she warmed up soup and cut cheese and bread she told Gwyn of her experience. Gwyn's eyes went wide.

"You walked through a mirror and it didn't break?"

"Yes! I was in a totally different place. I still can't get over it." Murelle said as she stirred the soup. "What a strange place we live in. Good, but strange."

It was early morning again, Murelle looked out the window to see it had snowed all night. What was her garden looked like mounds of snow, some branches poked through the drifts like sticks. It was a little depressing. She loved looking at green, flowers and plants. It was part of Eldicor and the snow was a poor man's fertilizer.

Pouring a cup of coffee she turned on her computer and read some emails from home and promises of presents that would be shipped to her. She smiled at an email from her sister telling her of some of the news from home.

Sipping her coffee she looked at her to do list. It was long. There was a lot to do for the party and she had better get busy. First she wrote her sister about the party and how much fun it would be, but a lot of work needed to be done first. Finishing that she looked at the next item to be done. There were a few items already finished, but the next to do was to write to Toby or at least talk to him.

She set her cup down and opened her word processor. She wrote;

Toby;

As you know, I am throwing a large party and would like to use the Stars End kitchen to prepare the food for the party. It is larger than my small kitchen here in Eldicor, Since it's rarely full, I don't think I'll be in anyone's way. And it has more up to date ovens and stoves. I promise it will be cleaned afterward and will be left in good shape. I have a lot of cooking to do.

Sincerely; Murelle GreyMantle; Baroness of Eldicor.

Murelle printed it out, folded the sheet of paper and stuffed it in the envelope then addressed it to Toby. She called out. "Gwyn."

Gwyn walked into the kitchen, carrying a bowl of oatmeal, a spoon in her mouth. She removed the spoon. "Yes"'

"I need to go to Rhydin for a while. Can you go to Eliza's for the day?"

"Sure!" She replies and takes another spoon of oatmeal.

Murelle sighed. "Thanks honey. I'll try to be back as fast as possible."

"Okay." Gwyn returned to the table and continued eating her oatmeal. Murelle quickly ate a bowl herself, rinsing the bowl in the sink, she sets it down and goes to her bedroom to dress warmly. Gwyn was in her coat and pulling on her boots when Murelle entered the living room.

"Did you rinse your bowl?"

"Yes mother." She answered with a roll of her eyes. Murelle pulled on her boots and her coat. Together they left the cottage, locking the door, Mure turns and hugs Gwyn.

"I'll be back as fast as I can."

"Okay, Mom"

They parted ways, leaving boot-prints in the snow.

Up at the castle, Murelle was greeted by the guards and the elves that were performing their morning duties. She stomped her feet to lose the snow from her boots and opened the great doors to the hallway that lead to the different parts of the castle. Wiping her feet on the mat she looked around. Servants were scurrying about with their chores and Lucy caught sight of her.

"Baroness! Welcome!" Lucy called out cheerfully.

"Hello Lucy. Is the queen busy?"

"She is taking her breakfast, I"m sure she'll see you." Lucy replied, "Come, she is in her apartments."

Following Lucy, she unbuttoned her coat and replied to those who greeted her as they made their way through the hallways. She was a familiar sight at the castle and they were always polite and cheerful to her.

The two guards that stood on either side of the door straightened when Murelle and Lucy approached them and watched as Lucy knocked on the door. It was opened by Constance. Murelle was a little intimidated by her; she was very protective of the queen.

Lucy gestured to Murelle. "The Baroness would like to see the queen if she could."

"O' course. Her Ladyship is dressed an' can see ye." Her thick brogue forming her words. Opening the door wider she let Murelle in. Lucy curtsied and hurried away to perform her own tasks. Murelle loved the queen's apartments. It held several rooms, decorated in soft pastels, overstuffed chairs and a fire that glowed. It was a soothing place. The queen looked up from her dresser and smiled.

"Murelle! Greetings!" The queen exclaimed. "Twice in one week! What brings you here?"

Constance was bustling about in the background, listening discreetly. Murelle answered. "I need to get to get a letter to Toby St Germain. Can you help?"

"I'll get one of the elves to take you. They know how."

"Oh, thank you." Murelle answered gratefully.

Teleperien pulled a thickly ornately decorated rope. Soon the door opened and Rose stood there. "Yes M'Lady?"

"Please take the Baroness to the messengers." Tele answered gently.

Rose curtsied. "Yes M'Lady. Come Baroness."

Murelle still wasn't used to be called "Baroness". She grew up without such titles and it felt strange to her. Gesturing to her, Rose led her to another part of the castle Mure wasn't too familiar with. Several elves were shuffling through missives and some were dressing for deliveries.

"Rose! You brought a guest!" It was one of the elves that were close by. He was tall, like the others, but unlike most, his hair was dark. "Yes, this is Baroness GreyMantle. She has a delivery. Can you help?"

"Of course." He answered with a gentle smile. Mure liked him immediately. He wasn't stand offish as most elves were. "I can take you!"

"Thank you!"

"We'll take it right away." He pulled on his cloak.

Murelle turned to Rose. "Thank you."

"I'm at your service Baroness." She curtsied and left with a wave of her hand.

"What's your name?" Murelle asked as they walked down the hallway.

"Halabard. In the queen's service." Out in the courtyard he dropped the red stone. The portal opened to a wooded area, a house in view. Together they stepped through and Halabard picked up the stone. The portal closed and they made their way to the front door. Murelle had never been to Toby's place. She looked around. The forest was quiet and serene, snow on the branches of the trees. The elf knocked on the door. At once dogs barked, voices of children called out;

"Someone's at the door!"

She heard Toby try to quiet them and he opened the door. He looked surprised to see Murelle with the messenger elf.

"Hello Toby, I have come with a request."

She held out the envelope.

Toby

Date: 2017-12-16 19:33 EST
"Someone's at the door!"

Toby had learned his lesson from the previous visit. When the sound of someone's knock sang out this time, he had already moved the small sofa that usually sat near the entryway (for comfort of taking off/putting on boots or other such clothing for anyone coming in or out), so that it formed a kind of barricade. With him standing in the gap, the dogs would not be able to charge the door and terrify the poor visitor(s).

Of course this left him out of reach of the door itself, but that was not an issue for him. A moment's focus upon the door, and the bolts disengaged...the door swung upon from this thought as surely as if he'd grasped the doorknob with his own hand.

"Murelle! Please both of you, come in. Pardon my barrage of door greeters here.." The pups were still not able to get up over the tall-backed couch, though their parents Duke and Duchess *could*....they were just calmer and not inclined to jump over. "All right, all right, settle *down*..."

Once both visitors were inside the foyer and the outer door closed, Toby greeted Murelle and the Elf Halabard properly. If Halabard was startled or unnerved by the small mob of dogs on the other side of the high-backed couch, Toby thought with an inward chuckle, he hid it quite well.

"Well now, what?ve you got for me here." Toby opened up the envelope and perused through it. After reading it through, he nodded.

"No problem in that, the kitchen at Star's End is a lot more modernized and more importantly, a lot *cleaner* than it used to be in the old days. One of the things that Mr. Kane changed when he took over as general manager, and I've kept it going in turn."

Once the dogs had been satisfied (and they weren't until Murelle had leaned over the couch and let each and every one of them nose her hands repeatedly), Toby was able to bring the two in to sit down in the den just off of the entryway. The girls and Tabitha had taken the dogs into the living room on the other side of the hall, which was their de facto 'home space', especially when visitors were there.

Toby returned with a small electronic key, which he handed to Murelle. "Here, this will allow you in the back entryway, the staff door. Much easier than going through the main bar, and that back entry has direct access to both the kitchen and the loading dock so you can move things in and out. I'll make sure all the 'bots know to either help or keep out of the way, and the kitchen staff can have the night off, unless you want them to help out. They can be, um, inventive."

"Also, since you're here...I was going to craft a letter to send over, but this is much easier. We'd love to come, and will be there. The girls are already making plans to go dress shopping with Tabitha and Wyheree." The bemused smile on his face suggested that Toby was happy not to be part of that expedition.

"Is there anything we should bring, or that would be appropriate for us to bring?"

Murelle GreyMantle

"Is there anything we should bring, or that would be appropriate for us to bring?"

Murelle shook her head. "No, thank you. I'm just glad you're coming."

They exchanged a little small talk then Murelle rose to leave. There was still a lot to do. "Thank you again." As she pocketed the key. On the way out, she waved to the girls and looked at their youngest. "You're getting so big!" She got a hug from Tabitha, and then the pair left.

Once outside and out of earshot Halabard started to laugh. "Now, that was entertaining."

"Oh yeah." Murelle chuckled. "It's not a place where you would look for peace and quiet, except when the little ones are asleep.?

Stepping through the portal, it closed and after a few more polite words were exchanged, they parted ways. Murelle had a lot of shopping to do and was glad and grateful for the use of the kitchen. It should make things a lot easier.

Murelle GreyMantle

Date: 2017-12-17 09:33 EST
Shopping was a chore. Some Murelle would buy some things in the village; but most would be bought in Rhydin. The little village didn't have enough and she didn't want to buy them out. There were others who would need supplies. Going to the stores she bought large bags of flour and sugar, flavorings, chocolate, and other essential ingredients were bought. It was expensive. She studied the list and checked off what she needed. She arranged to have most them delivered to the Stars End Bar; she carried the lighter items but the heavier ones she couldn't handle on her own. Looking at list as she went, she made her way to the Stars End Bar.

It hadn't changed a bit, but it was empty. She was kind of sorry about that, she tended there before she and Llewyss married and made quite a few friends. Passing through the common room she entered the kitchen she saw the staff and greeted them and told them her business. Finding out it was approved by Toby, they readily agreed. So she put the perishables into the refrigerators and the other items stored in a part of the kitchen where it not be in the way. By this time the larger goods had arrived and was hauled in, she looked and made sure she didn't miss anything.

One thing she didn't expect was a kitchen staff. They were gracious and welcomed her, and even volunteered to help. Murelle did not turn down their offer and was grateful for it.

"I have to do a bit more shopping, but I'll be back tomorrow with the recipes and we'll get started."

Knowing her little cottage wasn't going to be large enough to accommodate all her guests, she went to a place where she could rent an additional wing. Someone at the market told her about it.

"Yeah! A temporary room! You add it on and it's easily removed and returned." One clerk volunteered this suggestion after Murelle told him of her problem of space.

"No kidding?" She asked her eyebrows rose. "I've never heard of such a thing."

"Sure, the company is in the West End. It's called "Rooms with a View." He answered as he bagged up her groceries.

"Wow! Thanks!"

He grinned. "No problem."

Making her way to the West End she looked through the windows of the different shops. She rarely visited the West End and sure enough there was the company that kind of set apart from the shops and buildings. She opened the door and went in. There were several room types displayed and Murelle slowly walked along and viewed them. A sales clerk approached her.

"Can I help you?" He asked. His sandy blonde hair was combed back. He smiled his salesman smile.

"Yes. I need a temporary room for a party about 9 by 13 ft. Does it come with flooring?"

He nodded professionally and gestured to the selections. "Let me show you what we have. Guiding her to the selections she studied them. "Hmmm."

One stood out to her. It was more like a dome than an actual 13 by 9 room, but looked like it would be spacious enough to accommodate a large crowd. Most of the crowd would be the villagers; she hoped she would get her friends and acquaintances to attend as well.

They made arrangements for delivery; Murelle would have to bring them to Eldicor. So she signed the agreement, made her payment, and a day and time was set for delivery and set up. Last thing was to go to the Space Port. She wanted to invite Charlie and other workers. She had printed more invitations the night before when she thought of them. There were only a few, so she stuck them in her pocket. Also Murelle wanted to send communications to Miles and Will Savage. She doubted Will would attend, but she really wanted Miles there. She owed him her life.

She entered the office at the space port and Charlie looked up. He was from the Orion star system and was blue and had strange antennas on his head. He was a great guy and Murelle really liked him.

"Hi Charlie!" Charlie wasn't his real name. It was beeps and squeals that was impossible to understand. He had a strange accent but that didn't bother Murelle.

Looking up he exclaimed, "Murelle! What a surprise!"

He set down the ledger he was studying and stood. "What brings you here?"

"Two things, to bring invitations to a party I'm throwing a party for the Yule and I need to use the communicator to send messages." She answered holding out the envelope that contained the invitation. He opened it and nodded.

"I'd love to come. But how do I get to your place" You live quite a ways from here."

"I will send word of when and where to meet. I have to be with you."

"Very good." He answered.

She handed him the remaining envelopes. "Could you make sure those on the envelopes get these?"

"Sure." He took the envelopes and looked at the names. He set them on the desk. "I'll get them to them today."

"Thank you Charlie. Now, I need to use the communicator."

Charlie chuckled. "You know where it's at."

"I do. And again, thank you."

She left the office and went to the communication building. Sitting at a console she entered her security code and opened a channel. She sent word of the party first to Miles:

Hey there! Murelle here, just wanted to let you know I'm throwing a Yule or Christmas party if you prefer. It'll be the 23rd of December at my place in Eldicor. I'd love to see you again. If you wish, bring your wife and kids. It's for the whole family. Let me know" Murelle

Sent a similar message to Will. She made sure they were sent and she sat back with a sigh.

Time to go home. She was exhausted. First she'll stop at the Red Dragon Inn for cold sodas and get dinner from one of the small take out places scattered about Rhydin. Wearily, she stood and left.

Miles looked down at the message again and smiled. A Yule party, havn't had one of those in years. It would be nice to see Murelle again. She was like a sister to him, and her daughter Gwen is great.

"Murelle, Come hell or high water i will be there. You may need to put me up for a few days....Do you need me to be anything" Garden stuff, parts that you can't get' Also, How old is Gwen and what would she like for the Yule?

Your Brother, Miles"

He clicked on send and left his quarters to find his CO, he need to request off. He reached for the door and stopped as his hand started to shake. Closing his fist tightly to stop the shakes he left his room.

Murelle's invitation had been received with great joy and the RSVP return with a yes. After the craziness of the annual Governor's Yule Ball was over, she acquired some potted cuttings of rare herbs from Eregor. He had an amazing garden at the tower. These would make a perfect gift for Mure. She had no idea what to get for Gwyn, but she was sure something would come to mind before the day of the party.

Abby and Madison, the youngest of her children, were curious about the invitation their mother had placed on the kitchen cork board. It was where Colleen put all the reminders for family related events like birthdays.

"Mama!" Abby pointed to the card. "What's this one for" Who has a birthday?"

The younger of the pair of twins, Madison, rolled her eyes. "Abby, Rick and Catie have the next birthday! The twenty five on the calendar is their day."

"That, my girls, is an invitation to a Yule party from an old and dear friend named Murelle." She smiled thoughtfully.

"I thought you already went to a Yule party!" Abby's auburn brows furrowed.

"I did, but there's no law saying you can only go to one a year." Colleen looked a bit amused at her daughter's comment. "Besides, this one is for families. The Ball is a more formal event."

Abby suddenly looked pleased. "Does this mean we don't have to wear fancy stuff?"

Maddie scowled at her sister's question. "I like wearing dresses!"

"You can wear what you like, but you better remember it will be cold on the way," Collie said as she started preparing their supper.

Abby laughed. "No bathing suits!"

"Does your friend have children?" Madison climbed up on stool at the island counter to watch her mother work.

"She does, a daughter named Gwyn." Colleen looked thoughtful. "She's about Mir's age, I think."

The questions went from there, but the girls were excited about the party.

One afternoon, Murelle was busy wrapping gifts for her friends. If they don't show up to she decided she would send it to them anyway.

"I really should go to the Space Port to see if Miles and Will replied to the communications I sent." Murelle was speaking more to herself but Gwyn heard her and asked.

"Can I come?"

Murelle looked up from her work and smiled. "Sure, I'm just going to the Space Port. I can introduce you to Charlie. Time for a break anyway, let's get our coats on and go." So they bundled up, it was colder than usual this year in Eldicor, when usually it's mild. Out the door, Murelle locked it and the portal stone was dropped, RhyDin appears. They step through and picked up the stone. Immediately the portal closed. They walked through the town and reached the Space Port. Murelle first stopped to see Charlie.

"Hiya Charlie!" Murelle called out as she walked into the office. Charlie stood up and smiled.

"I'm here to check if I have any messages."Gwyn, shy by nature was taken aback a little when she saw the blue spacer. Murelle drew her next to her and said, "But first, let me introduce you to my daughter Gwyn."

"Hello Gwyn, I'm Charlie." He answered in strange accent.

Gwyn gripped Murelle's hand and replied softly; "Pleased to meet you." "I first met Charlie years ago when I still piloted my space craft." Murelle said gently. She had sold her beloved craft before she left RhyDin years ago. She and Gwyn traveled back to RhyDin by a transport vessel. That was a long trip. Took almost a full week. Gwyn only nodded trying to be polite.

"Well, I'd better check those messages." Murelle said and turned to go then remembering something.

"I will be here at 4 pm on the 23rd try to be at the Red Dragon Inn. I will take you to Eldicor."

Charlie nodded. "Very good. I'll see you then." They parted, Murelle and Gwyn went to the communication building. Once inside, she asked one of the employees if a communication came in for her.

"Name?" "Murelle GreyMantle."

He sifted through the pile of messages that was awaiting for someone to claim. "Murelle".Murelle" he pulled out the message. "Ah! Here you go." He then handed her the sheet of paper with her name on it.

"Thank you." Murelle murmured then opened the message. I was from Miles. She smiled to herself as she read it. "Murelle, Come hell or high water I will be there. You may need to put me up for a few days....Do you need me to be anything" Garden stuff, parts that you can't get' Also, How old is Gwen and what would she like for the Yule"

Your Brother, Miles"

Murelle went to one of the consoles and opened a channel. She responds,

"Miles I am delighted you will be here! You are welcome to stay with me, I have a spare bedroom. As far as what Gwyn wants, it really doesn't matter, she's 14 now and perhaps a nice sweater from home. Just a suggestion. I really don't need anything, but thank you for asking me. I will meet you at the Space Sport to take you to Eldicor, I have to be with you to travel to my place. I am looking forward to seeing you again.

Your Sister; Murelle

She sent the message. "Do you remember Miles?" Murelle asked Gwyn.

"I think so." She replied thoughtfully.

"Looks like we'll have a house guest for a few days." She said as she stood up. ?Come, let's go get some root beer at the Inn.

Time passed and the day of the party was growing near. One morning Murelle went to Rhydin to get the temporary addition to her house. She and Borin took the wagon to the store, halted, then climbed down. Once inside the salesman looked up and greeted them.

"We've come for the" addition. Can you send someone with us to set it up?"

"You'll need more than one. Let me round them up and we'll load your wagon." He answered smoothly. He picked up a radio and asked for "Steve and Roger to come to the showroom." They arrived a few minutes later and was told them they were to go with Murelle and Borin to set up the spare room."

So the parts were loaded into the wagon, the two workers perched on top of the load with tool boxes and other items needed for construction. They passed through the portal and the men were amazed at this. The one named Steve (his name was on his shirt) asked. "What did we just pass through?"

"We use a tool to open a portal, or it's a three day trip over the mountains. Very handy." Murelle answered as she climbed down. The walls, parts and other items were hauled to the back of the cottage to attach it to the back door. Quickly Steve and Roger got to work. It took several hours, but it was completed. Murelle entered the room through the door and admired the work. It was perfect. Steve and Roger needed to be returned to Rhydin so Murelle brought them back through the portal. She was as discreet as possible, trying not to show how the portal opened. At the store she thanked them for their work, they parted and Murelle returned home. She was pleased with the room, it would be large enough to hold the tables for the food and drink quite well.

The next day she shopped in the village for candles, ordered more firewood, and other incidentals that would be needed. The owners tripped over themselves to serve her. General invitations had been distributed throughout the village and surrounding farms. Excitement was everywhere. She was greeted constantly and quite honestly was glad when she returned home. Setting her purchases on the table, she picked up her to-do list. She needed to go to RhyDin to rent tables, extra sconces for the candles, large platters and other items she would need.

Speaking to herself, "I'll go tomorrow. I'm done for the day." She poured herself a cup of coffee and sat in an easy chair with a sigh. "Boy this has been work."

Miles took a moment to re-read the message again.

?Miles I am delighted you will be here! You are welcome to stay with me, I have a spare bedroom. He smiled, one of the few lately. He had requested and it had been approved for time off for the Yule. After a small yelling match with his CO about weather it was a vacation or medical leave he wasn't sure who won. He had gone on a "shopping' trip through the supply offices and his personal storage from his time under cover with Mars Security Services.

He had also managed to get a glance at his latest medical review.

`Extreme PTSD." Like they knew anything. He put the small injector to his wrist and hit the button, the medication would keep the shakes at bay. They couldn't do anything for the nightmares though.

He was lucky if he got an hour or two of sleep before he woke up in sweats, reliving his past missions, only the worst ones though.

He tapped at a computer sending a message to Mure.

"Sis, I will be at Stars End, staying in room 6, just come and get me or let me know when and where. Looking forward to seeing You & Gwyn. Got a storage crate awaiting transport when we get to your house. I just need to drop a beacon.

Your Bro. M."

It took all day to cook for the party even with help from the kitchen staff at the Stars End Bar's kitchen. Mounds of cookies, gingerbread, the promised ginger snaps, thumbprint, sugar cookies cleverly decorated; fudge brownies, chocolate chip, peanut butter and oatmeal raisin.

Candies were made as well, cocoa fudge, peanut brittle, chocolate covered potato chips, white chocolate peppermint bark, and lollypops. Also they made small meatballs in savory gravy, small sausages in a tangy sauce, several meats, cheeses, small sandwiches and shrimp cocktails.

In the common room Gwyn and a couple of friends from the village glued eyes, a nose and tiny antlers on candy canes. The party was three days away, so the perishables were stored in the refrigerators, but Murelle carefully filled plastic boxes with the sweets. Those would be stored at her place. She decided to gather the rest the day before the party.

Finally finished she thanked the staff with invitations to her party if they so desired to attend.

"I could have never have finished this without your help." Murelle said. She handed them invitations. "You would be more than welcome. I will be here to take you to Eldicor; I have to be with you."

"When?" Asked one of the cooks who was name was Jonalyn.

"4 pm on the 23rd. We will meet in the Red Dragon and will leave from there."

"I'd love to come. I don't have family; it will be nice to have something for the Yule." Jonalyn answered with a smile.

"You will be most welcome. All of you."

With that, the boxes were loaded on the wagon. The candy canes were carried in boxes. The girls all climbed into the back of the wagon to keep everything from sliding around.

Piling the sweets in Murelle's room, she went to the spare room. She opened the window slightly to air it out some, took off the blankets and changed the sheets to fresh ones. Making the bed again, she went into the closet and made room for Jeff's clothes. After gathering dusting gear, she wiped down the dresser, end table and candle holder. She looked around to make sure all was in place.

It will be great to have Miles around.

Again, Murelle and Borin arrived in Rhydin by the usual method. First stop was at a rental store near the Stars End Bar. There she got the tables, sconces, platters and other items needed. They were loaded on the wagon and they stopped at the Red Dragon. She had bought three barrels of ale and several bottles of wine. They were waiting for her and they were loaded onto the wagon as well. Hobbits would be attending and they are quite fond of ale and good food.

"Is that it?" Borin asked.

"One more stop. I need paper plates, plastic cutlery and napkins as well as cups, mugs and the like. In a couple days I will need to come back to get the food from the Stars End Bar's kitchen. They will need to be thawed and warmed up."

"Very well." He answered and slapped the reins on the horses. Lurching forward they found a store that sold the paper products. She selected ones decorated with poinsettias. Large and small paper plates, several boxes of plastic cutlery and colorful napkins. Again, the wagon was loaded and they climbed back on to the wagon.

Back in Eldicor they unloaded the wagon, Gwyn helped. "I really appreciate your help Borin." She says, squeezing his arm.

"It's my pleasure." He answered her with a whiskered smile. They wrestled the tables into the room and set them up. Then she had Borin place the barrels on stands and he carried the box of wine bottles to the room. Borin took his leave and returned to the castle.

Murelle covered the tables with white tablecloths she bought in the village. She placed the sconces in the temporary room and inserted the candles. The sconces were decorated with holly. She could see through the small windows that it was growing late.

She made dinner and after it was washed up, Murelle went to bed. Gwyn went to her own room and closed the door. "I hope this turns out well." Murelle muttered as sleep took her.

Murelle walked briskly into the communication building to see if any messages were waiting. And there was.

"Sis, I will be at Stars End, staying in room 6, just come and get me or let me know when and where. Looking forward to seeing You & Gwyn. Got a storage crate awaiting transport when we get to your house. I just need to drop a beacon. Your Bro. M." Murelle smiled to herself. Made a quick reply;

"Miles, I will be there on the 23rd to bring guests to Eldicor. I will see you then. Can't wait!

She sent the message and left to a very patient dwarf.

Murelle had returned to town to pick up a few items for Mile's stay, of course coffee, extra groceries and a nice present. A hand made sweater, it looked like some she saw in Ireland on Earth. Cable knit with local wool. She smiled as she paid for it and had them gift wrap it for her. Tucking the gift under her arm, she went to the loaded wagon where Borin was patiently waiting. He got a few stares and not daunted, stared right back. She hurried to the wagon.

She got Borin a gift earlier, she grinned to herself. A handsome, custom made battle axe. She couldn't wait to give it to him.

"I think we're done here Borin, let's go home. Tomorrow, we'll need to come back to get the food from the Stars End Bar. I'm afraid I'll need your help again."

"Any time Mure" you know that."

Murelle gave him a warm hug. "You're the greatest."

He chuckled and slapped the reins.

The day of the party finally arrived. Murelle stepped through the portal into RhyDin, she was already dressed for the party, she wore a dark red dress with a black sash around her waist. Her hair was braided down the back, tied with black bow. First she went to the Stars End Bar to get Miles. Stepping into the bar, she looked around for Miles. Finding room 6, she knocked on the door, her smile widen as the door opened.

"Miles! It's great to see you!" Hugging him as she said it.

Murelle GreyMantle

At the Red Dragon, Murelle gathered up all who were attending the party. There was quite a crowd there. A couple of the cooks from the Stars End Bar, Charlie and a couple of workers from the space port as well as several she knew from her days as a tender in the Stars End Bar. Miles had accompanied her, he tried to be cheerful, but it seemed forced. Murelle was a little worried. Something was wrong with him, but she couldn't put her finger on the problem.

"Is everyone here?"

She had already dressed for the party, a dark red dress with a black sash around her waist. Her long dark brown was braided and tied with a black bow. She also had the silver circlet that was given to her when she became a baroness.

Leading them to the back alley where she dropped the portal stone on the snow covered street. The portal opened to her cottage, she ushered them through. When all were through the portal, she picked up the stone and it closed immediately.

To those who came she welcomed them warmly. The porch was lined with live garland, tiny little lights that twinkled. The living room had a tree in front of the large window that faced the street. It was covered with the same tiny lights that was on the porch, silver and gold garland was woven within its branches. Under the tree, gifts were piled high, just waiting to be opened. The stereo was softly playing Christmas carols; the Yule log was in the fireplace burning cheerfully. Charlie, stood out with his blue skin but he was so easy going, people took to him immediately. He was entertaining as well. He was well spoken and made everyone feel good when he spoke to them even with his strange accent.

Murelle looked around to make sure she had everyone; she led them to the addition through the kitchen, to back door. Candles filled the room with a comforting yellow glow. Portable heaters warmed the room, large rectangular warming pans, kept the food warm with the sterno she found in RhyDin.

Gesturing to the buffet table, this was laden with the fare. "Happy Yule! Please make yourselves at home!"

By this time the villagers and farmers were arriving, as well as those from outlaying areas of Ravenswing, and those from the Northern reaches of Eldicor. Soon the cottage was filled to capacity. People talking all once, plates were loaded with the Christmas goodies. Little ones held the candy canes that Gwyn and friends had decorated with the eyes, nose and tiny antlers. By this time, the St Germains and Xenograg's family had arrived.

Murelle hugged them.

"Welcome! Please make yourselves at home. There's plenty of good food and drink."

After about hour into the party, Murelle decided it was time to open presents.

"Listen up!" Called above the din. "I want all the children to gather in the living room." Excited little voices cried out with delight and excitement. "Okay' everyone one listen up! I want children from infancy to those are five to come forward."

Mothers carried little ones, the excited children gathered around Murelle. Gifts were passed out. Delighted children chattered excitedly at the gift inside. Soft stuffed animals that with the ability to emit little tunes when squeezed.

"Now I want those are six to ten. She shooed the little ones to make room for the additional children. Boys got what on earth is called "Legos." The girls received got "Barbies", complete with tiny dresses and other items that were needed to dress up their dolls.

The din was rising" Murelle watched as Miles quietly went out the front door. Her eyebrows knitted together. Glancing at the door she called for those who were 11 to 16.

The boys got hand held games that could be played when bored. Girls got makeup kits for their age group.

At this moment, the door opened, Borin stepped in. In his loud baritone voice. "I announce Her Majesty Queen Teleperien and her Highness Princess Erwyn!"

At once all talking ceased. The children put down their toys and stood. All bowed and curtsies to the pair as they walked in. The queen was beautiful in a dove grey gown, a brooch at the neck, her crown, woven silver strands, that held the three stones, Narya, Nenya and Vilya upon her head over an elegantly arraigned braids. Erwyn was in a cheerful green gown; her own crown was a simple gold with a single white gem over her bright yellow hair that glittered in the light.

"Good Evening my good people. Please carry on. I am delighted to be among you."

Murelle stood and greeted the queen. The talking resumed but it was a little quieter.

"Lady, it is good of you to attend my party." Murelle said nodding her head. "Please make yourself at home. Would you care for wine?"

"That would be lovely."

Murelle looked at the children. "I'll be right back."

Leading the queen to the back room, she showed the selection of wine. The queen chose a nice white Riesling.

"Baroness Murelle, your house is lovely." Teleperien said warmly.

"I thank you Lady. I must return to the children. Gifts for the adults will be handed out soon."

The queen bowed her head, then started to mingle with her subjects, talking softly moving from person to person. Murelle quickly returned to the gift giving. She kept looking at the door hoping Miles would come back inside. It was getting cold out.

To the rest of those under 18, it was more general, not so much connected with gender. Writing kits for journaling and writing letters. She stood up and excused herself from the crowd, slipping out the front door to find Miles. She spotted him on the front lawn looking up the stars. Murelle waded through the snow drifts, snow getting into her shoes as she approached him.

"Miles are you okay?"

Miles looked at Murelle. He looked at her but did not reply. Murelle laid a hand on her arm. Very softly she asked what the problem was. "I love you like a brother and I know something is wrong. Can you tell me what?s up?"

Meanwhile in Eldicor

Colleen arrived with several members of her family huddled up in horse-drawn sleighs. There was crisp feeling in the air and one could see their breath hanging like icicles. With the exception of the youngest pair of girls, all of Colleen's children had been across the border into the Elven kingdom of Eldicor. Representatives of three generations were present among the party goers.

Maggie Harker, wearing a Santa hat with silver bells on it, started singing, "Jingle bells, jingle bell, jingle all the way!" She was joined by others as they rode along. Alinar, perched in his father, Eregor's lap, did his best to sing a long. Colleen, the younger, was busy pointing out every deer and rabbit to her aunt, Rhiannon Harker. The little girl's mother had little lap room these days as she was due to give birth not long after the new year began. Dennis Harker and Albert Hall lent their voices to singing.

Catie Harker was practicing her sign language with Madison Fenner. While Madison's hearing had improved some, she often had difficulty keeping up in large groups. Abby Fenner, on the other hand, was chattering away with Rick Harker.

Given that Colleen and Teleperien were long time friends, some of the formalities were relaxed crossing the border. The troops still did their necessary duties which took a bit of time. A guide was provided to the closest point to Murelle's place. They would meet her or her representative there to lead them to the party. The family had brought juices, teas, and Colleen's famous brownies to add to what Mure was already serving. The Harker children brought a sack full of small gifts. They were at an age where they liked being Santa's helpers.

They hugged warmly. "How have you been friend" Is all of your family here??

Now that the gifts for the children had been handed out, she gathered up the gifts for the adults. She first went to the queen. "Lady, please accept my Yule gift." It was wrapped in elegant silver with a white bow. Upon opening Tele smiled. It was a necklace that was crafted with silver and turquoise.

"This was crafted on earth, turquoise is a tradition used by the Navajo. They not my tribe, I am in the Fox Tribe. But I thought it was lovely."

"Thank you Baroness!" Tele exclaimed as she held up the necklace, it glowed in the candlelight. "It is just beautiful." Seeing a second item was in the box, a silver bracelet with a turquoise inlay. "Oh my Murelle this is so generous."

Murelle smiled brightly. "I am glad you like them. Please excuse me; I have more gifts to distribute." Leaving the queen, she found Collie and handed her a gift wrapped box. Upon opening, a nice set of hat, scarf and gloves woven with white angora wool.

"It should keep you warm." Murelle said with a smile. She gave gifts to the Harkers, all elegant sets of hats, scarves and gloves like Collie received, but different hues and shades. All of the children that had arrived with Collie received the same gifts she distributed to the village children. Looking for Erwyn, she was talking to Amanda. She was glad to see them and greeted them warmly.

"I am so glad you are here! I have presents!"

They opened them to find a cheerful necklace and bracelet set; gold with white gems that glittered in the light. Exclaiming over them, they hugged Murelle and thanked her. She Murelle excused herself and looked for Borin. He was talking to one of the farmers, both with ales in their hands. "Please excuse me gentlemen. I need Borin."

Borin excused himself from the farmer and Murelle gleefully lead him to the Yule tree. She drags the battle axe from behind the tree. The dwarf's eyes opened wide. "Murelle! I love it!" He picked it up and studied the axe.

"You really shouldn't have. This must have been expensive."

"It's a thank you for all the help you give. I couldn't have pulled this party off without your help."

He gave her a bear hug. They really weren't too different in height, so they weren't off balance.

To Xenograg, she gave a knife with an ivory handle. Amal got a necklace set like Amanda and Erwyn received, but it bore green gems. Finding Toby and Tabitha, she gifted Toby a knife like Xenograg, but with a handle of polished wood, Tabitha received a necklace set like Amal but with red gems.

She wondered if she missed anyone.

When he opened the door to his room he hadn't expected to be hugged that quickly, but a hug from Mure is and was always welcomed. Things went quickly as they gathered up everyone and went through the portal.

He helped where he could, but Mure had everything well in hand. He stayed for a bit and watched as the kids started to open the presents, and smiled softly. He felt his hand starting to shake as he stood up and quietly walked out the door. He stopped as the queen walked by he gave a bow as she passed.

He sat on a stump and just gazed at the stars, he didn't know how long he was out there for.

"Miles are you okay?"

Miles looked at Murelle. He looked at her but did not reply. Murelle laid a hand on her arm. Very softly she asked what the problem was. "I love you like a brother and I know something is wrong. Can you tell me what?s up?"

He gave her a little smirk as she asked that question. What was wrong with him. He clenched his fist as he felt a shake coming on. If one was to observe his arm they would see think white scars running up and down, moving to his shoulder, neck and down his back and spine. Unmistakable signs from torture using high currents of voltage.

"I can tell you what is wrong, but i don't think i really know myself." He took a breath in. "I close my eyes to sleep and all i see are the demons of my past....I wake up at night, and i am drowning in a sea of blood."

He looks up at the sky. "I look up and instead of seeing the majestic of it all, i see the eyes of those who have died, and those i have killed. My past haunts me in my sleep, and when i am awake."

He looks down from the sky and to her. "I will be fine..." He offers a smiled, not a full one, but one none the less. "Go in and tend to your guest. I will be in a few minutes. Just need to collect myself."

He pats her hand..

Murelle felt her hand patted. Concern filled her soul. He must have suffered a great injury. "I'm glad you're here. Perhaps you can find healing here in Eldicor. The queen may be able to help. But please don't stay out too long, it's cold."

With that she squeezed his shoulder and returned to her guests. Worry about Miles grew.

Invitation in hand, Wyheree, Roran, and little Shanni arrived at last - a bit late, as Wyh not entirely familiar with the location, but late was better than missing a wondrous party.

With smiles and waves all around, Wyheree led her family through the crowd, Shanni's silvery fur reflecting the lights almost as brightly as her wide eyes. This was more people than she had ever seen, so the most Murelle might see of her was a small nose peeking around her father's broad leg.

Presenting a small box wrapped in pale blue paper topped wiith a white bow to her host, Wyheree beamed at Murelle.

"Thank you kindly for inviting us, Murelle. I trust we are not too late?"

"Thank you kindly for inviting us, Murelle. I trust we are not too late?"

Murelle received the gift with a grateful thank you. "No, you are not too late, I'm glad you made it. I have a gift for you." Gesturing for her to follow, Murelle reached a diminishing piles of gifts. Sorting through them, she produced one wrapped with a cheerful red wrapping with a gold bow. Upon opening, it reviled a necklace and bracelet set with blue gems that shown in the candle light. Murelle opened her gift to show beautiful hair combs, they were intricately designed.

"They are lovely, thank you. Please, make yourself at home. There is food and wine plenty. Oh, and make sure you have your children see me to receive a gift. I still have a few left and I don't want them left out."

Wyheree

Murelle's gift, once opened, showcased a pair of delicate haircombs, seemingly carved from crystal - feathery wisps like spun snow suspended within them. Wyheree immediately donned her gifts, Roran helping fasten the necklace under her hair.

"So lovely - thank you, Murelle. I will cherish these always."

A sudden whoop caught Shanni's ear, and she brightened upon hearing, and then seeing, Keith barging away from his sisters, grabbing her hand, and spiriting the tiny A'Taran pup into the throng of children. At first Wyheree worried, but a reassuring touch from Roran and a knowing nod from Tabitha soon had the Ice Mage relaxing, knowing Shanni was in good hands. She and Roran mingled, sampling the various exotic treats, sipping a glass (or two) of heady wine, and enjoying the company of friends, new and old.

QueenTeleperien

Date: 2017-12-24 08:22 EST
Teleperien gracefully moved about the cottage stopping to speak to her subjects. She wanted to know their concerns, needs and of course the good things that were happening in their lives. She first stopped to speak with the Dwarves of Ravenswing. Of course taxes were brought up and they discussed how they could cut their taxes without damaging the economy of the realm. It was a productive discussion and Tele excused herself happily. For once they agreed on that subject. Tele then sought out the elves from the northern reaches of Eldicor. They gave her the news she wanted to hear. They were prospering. But she was still concerned about outsiders appearing in their area. After the kidnapping of one their young elves to sell as a sex slave Teleperien kept elven guards a continual presence in their area. The elven guard would rotate their personnel so not to wear one group out. This seemed to work out well for them so would continue the practice.

"They are stern of face and do not allow strangers to enter our lands." They exclaimed. They supported themselves by growing produce and selling it to nearby towns. Some produce was even sold across the border into the northern countries. They prospered at this for their produce was of excellent quality and was in high demand. They also kept chickens and sold eggs as well. They were happy and content. Tele was pleased to hear of their lifestyle and complimented them on their way of life. Those who where there glowed with pleasure at her praise. There was some concern at the colder than usual winter, they had a lot of snow on the ground. But Tele reminded them that snow helps produce grow in the spring at a greater rate. They agreed at this, but they were still concerned at the amount that was available. Tele said she would look into sending goods to them from RhyDin. They thanked her for this favor. She also suggested that hot houses be built to grow produce during the cold winter. They liked the idea and they would send some of elves to procure what was needed to build them. It was agreed upon with a great deal of happy exclamations.

Tele excused herself and moved on to a group of farmers that were standing together speaking of their prospects in the winter. They were glad the queen was there to hear their concerns. With the amount of snow on the ground the cattle, horses, hogs, pigs and chickens were forced to remain within the barns. This put a strain on the hay and grain stores and the cold froze the water cisterns making it difficult to water the livestock.

"I will go to RhyDin to see if I can procure some hay and grain. I will also get some heaters that run on power packs to keep the cisterns thawed. You will have to pay for these items, but I will do what I can to get them for you at a good price."

To this the farmers agreed. They had their pride and did not want a handout. Just help. With a graceful farewell she moved on to the hobbits.

They were cheerful and content for the most part. The cold winter was affecting them as well. The young ones had a hard time with the large drifts walking to the portal to RhyDin to go to school. Those who work in RhyDin was affected as well. It was difficult to walk as the young ones. Again Tele said she would look into sleds that they could buy to slide over the snow banks. This was accepted with great happiness. They had too much pride to accept a handout from the queen. She looked after them, but they had to be responsible for themselves. Those who held small farms had the same concerns for their livestock and stocks of food. They require a great deal of food and provender for their young ones. Again Tele promised to get supplies they could buy from RhyDin. There the winter was not as cold, and supplies were in plenty. The hobbits were grateful for the help. The queen excused herself and moved on to the clerks and shop owners. They were doing well enough. They had to go to RhyDin more often for goods to sell. Unfortunately they had to raise some of the prices of the goods because of cost of procuring the goods in Rhydin. Tele sympathized with them and promised she would help with lowering some of the taxes so they could make a profit to support their families. They were grateful for this promise. They also informed her that Murelle and Gwyn supported them on a regular basis and was happy for their business. Murelle was filling her role as Baroness quite well it seemed. This pleased the queen. Murelle was proving to be a good choice as Baroness.

Teleperien made sure she spoke all of her subjects, and it seemed she had done so. She wondered if she missed anyone. She couldn't think of anyone else. The people from Ulls and Raptor did not come to the party. She wondered if they were just forgotten. This concerned her. They were human settlements and she made a note to herself to visit their area soon to make sure all was well.

She found Xenograg and Toby, she said to them. "It's time for me to return to the castle." She sighed. "I spent a great deal of time speaking with my subjects and I'm drained. Amaltea and Tabitha overhear her and expressed how happy they were to see her.

"You must come to the castle sometime for dinner." Tele exclaimed. "It would be a grand time."

To this they agreed. Within the month they decided to gather together for a dinner party. Of course Murelle would be invited. The queen was growing quite fond of the small woman; she was an excellent addition to her realm. And Gwyn was a sweetie. She sought out Murelle and gave her good nights. "It's time to return to the castle."

Murelle turned from her conversation with Borin.

"Thank you Lady for coming to my party. I appreciated and am honored by it. I hope you enjoyed yourself."

"I did. We must get together for dinner sometime. I have invited Xenograg and Amaltea and Toby and Tabitha as well. We could have a small dinner party."

"That would be excellent Lady. I will certainly attend with Gwyn if I may."

"Of course Gwyn would be welcome."

With that Teleperien found Erwyn with Amanda talking to a group of young humans and elves. They were laughing at a joke that was told and they stopped talking when the queen approached them. Bowing and curtsying they acknowledged her presence. She smiled.

"Having a good time?" Tele asked happily. They cried yes and told the queen how much they enjoyed themselves. Tele expressed how happy that made her. She spoke to Erwyn. "Come, it's time to go home." Erwyn turned to her friends and said good bye. Tele could see that a couple of the younger elven males were disappointed, as they were smitten with the young princess. They tried not to show it to the queen. The queen grinned widely at their admiration of her daughter. Taking their leave of the small group they walked together to Murelle's room and retrieved their cloaks from the mountain of coats on Murelle's bed. There were a few others who where retrieving their cloaks or coats as they too were getting ready to leave. It was growing late.

They took their leave of Xenograg, Toby, Amaltea and Tabitha. They called out their good byes and Teleperien and Erwyn left the cottage.

It was strangely quiet after the chatter and loud noise of the party. They spotted Miles still sitting by himself; a small fire was burning keeping him warm. Tele called out to him. "Good night Miles! You can go in now; it's not so crowded and loud." She guessed he was oppressed in some way by the noise and chatter. He stood and called out his thanks and sat down and held his hands to the fire. Tele moved on, walking up the cobbled street. They would have taken the carriage but the queen didn't want the horses to stand in the cold awaiting her. Walking into the gate she was greeted by the guards.

She called out "Good night good gentlemen!"

"Good night Majesty! Good night Highness."

"Good night!" Erwyn cried out. They entered in the great door and separated to go to their own apartments after they hugged and said good night. Tele walked past the two guards they stood at attention and saluted her as she walked by. She bid them good night and entered her apartment. Her room had been lit by a single candle left by a servant. She lit the lamp that sat on her night stand; it filled the room with a soft glow. Blowing out the candle she walked to the rope she pulled it to summon a servant. Lucy appeared at the door. She was unhappy and asked in a quiet voice how she could serve the queen.

"A pot of tea if you would. And some crackers. I didn't eat that much at the party and I need a bit of a snack." Lucy nodded unhappily. Tele asked her what was bothering her. The servant hesitated to complain, but finally told her she really wanted to go with Rose to the party. But she was required to remain behind to keep up her duties for herself and Rose. Tele was sympathetic.

"I understand. Tomorrow you can have the day off. It won't make up for missing the party, but you will have some time to yourself.?

Lucy brightened a little at this promise. She went to fetch the tea and crackers. Returning with the requested items, she set it on the table next to Tele's overstuffed chair. She then put a couple of logs on the dying embers in the fireplace and poked the fire to life. Soon a bright fire was burning. Tele said good night and Lucy left.

Tele poured herself a cup of tea and sat in her chair with a tired groan. It drained her speaking to all of her subjects of problems and solutions. But that was her job. To look after those she was responsible for. After drinking a cup of tea and nibbling on the crackers, she felt exhausted. She got up out of her chair with a groan and undressed, and took off her crown setting it in it's place in the wardrobe then hung her gown up. She pulled on a soft flannel nighty that reached the floor. It was cozy and warm. Pulling her hair from the elaborate braids, her long hair fell down her back. She went to the bed and lowered the lamp light. The room was softly lit from the fire in the fireplace. Tele pulled back the covers and crawled into bed, pulling up the covers back up; she gave a soft sigh "This was a good day." And fell into a deep sleep.

Between them, Toby and Tabitha had managed to shepherd the kids and the presents they'd brought through the portal and into the house. Maurin (now 9), Reinette (7) and Selene (newly 6 years old) were all decked out in brand new dresses (Maurin in green, Reinette in red and Selene in white), and Keith (who was just shy of three) had on the most adorable little suit and was eager to get into everything.

They'd wandered about for the first part of the party, greeting people they knew and being introduced to quite a few they didn't, while the girls ran off to join the other children (Maurin kept Keith in hand, so that her mother for once didn't *have* to.)

When Murelle called for presents, Keith was left with Tabitha with his new stuffed animal while the girls raced over - and promptly began to swap with each other (Maurin gave Reinette her doll, while Reinette gave Maurin the Legos she'd managed to talk someone out of), and banter with the other kids about what they'd gotten.

When Roran and Wyheree arrived, Keith caught sight of little Shanni and immediately forgot about his gift (which Tabitha neatly caught and tucked into a pocket), and raced over to her. For the rest of the night, the two would be nigh inseparable.

Miles had gotten the fire going to fight off the chill that was settling into the air. He nodded to the queen as she let him know it was clearing out inside.

He was looking around, the area, the moon had already started it's journey into the night sky. It was a great night. He heard a snap from behind him and turned around.

A smile crept up on his face as Gwyn and a couple of her friends had traveled out to see who had the fire going.

"Hello Gwyn, you enjoying the party?" He smiled at them and motioned for them to join him around the fire.

She watched him for a second, a smile forming on her face as she watched him pull out a bag of something.

"Well since i wasn't at the party, i guess i will fill my duty with a fireside story. But we can't do that unless we are properly prepared."

He held up a bag of Marshmallows in one hand, Chocolate and Gram crackers in the other.

"Now, where I come from, My family and i would make S'mores around the camp fire on the Eve of Christmas. If you arn't sure what they are or what to do, just watch."

Miles carefully picked up a long stick and proceed to show them how to make s'mores. After he had watched them make one and was sure they would be safe, he let out a small smile and leaned back a bit.

"Growing up i was always looking up at the night sky, dreaming of the day i would be able to travel to all the stars in the sky. They have names of course, but i had to put my own names to them. My sister and I would point out constellations and tell the other the real name, but then make up a new name for them, It was a fun game. Our parents for Christmas had gotten us start charts, Blank ones for us to put in our own names and map the night sky from our backyard."

"When I enlisted, my sister saw me off to my transport, it was dark out. We said our goodbyes with tears in our eyes, and sorrow in our hearts. I pointed to the sky, and spotted the North Star. I told her every night i will took to the sky no matter where i am at, and look to that star. Every night you must do the same, no matter where i will be i will always be watching you."

He took a sip of water, looking at the kids. "No matter where you are in life, On this planet or another, the stars will always light up your path, all you have to do is look up."

He watched as they brought there gaze skyward to the heavens. "My heritage believe that our ancestors are up there, the stars are there souls. Always watching us and guiding us on our journey."

He heard someone call for one of the kids. He looked up and saw several people standing just beyond the light of the fire, listening to his story.

"Sorry if i kept them out to late..." He looked down at the ground...

Gwyn stood listening to Miles as he talked about the stars and his experiences in life. She was fascinated by his story. She roasted a marshmallow and made a smore. She ate one and exclaimed, "This is good."

She sensed someone behind her, there were a few others gathered listening to Miles. Gwyn recognized the villagers. Gwyn greeted them. She smiled at Miles after he noticed them He said. "Sorry if I kept them out to late..." He looked down at the ground.

"I love listening to your views and thoughts Master Miles. It's interesting." Gwyn said quietly. Those who had joined them agreed with Gwyn. They questioned Miles of his origin and where he came from. They were fascinated by this 'spacer". They rarely met spacers, living in this protected realm. They didn't travel to RhyDin often so their experience was very limited.

More wood was produced and they stoked the fire. The snow was melting around them forming pools of cold water. The fire hissed when the rivulets of water hit the flames.

"Miles, can you show me some of ....what you call spacecrafts?? Gwyn asked eagerly. She leaned forward to look at Miles. She gave him a charming smile.

Murelle looked around for Gwyn. She was nowhere to be found. "Gwyn?" Mure called out. Someone said she went outside. Murelle's eyebrows rose. She grabbed her coat and went onto the porch. She saw a small crowd surrounding Miles. Gwyn was among them. Murelle walked through the snow drifts to see what was going on.

Gwyn was questioning Miles; the villagers that stood around the small fire seemed fascinated with Miles. She smiled. This is the good experiences Miles needed. She joined the small group. They greeted Murelle.

"Baroness! Hello!"

"Hello. I was just wondering what was up."

"Miles has been telling us of his life." Gwyn replied happily.

Murelle chuckled. "Well, don't stay out here too long. It's cold and I don't want you catching a cold." She smiled at Miles and returned to the cottage. She was encouraged by this. Miles was opening up.

A few children rushed over, and while the little dragon smiled, never once did a fang show. Horned head bobbing to her sister, and Toby, and his company, before slinking to sneak a ginger cookie or two. They were her favorite.

With Keith's gift safely tucked first in her pocket, then under her arm, Tabitha kept a watchful eye on the children - making sure the littlest ones had as grand of a time as the older ones. Selene kept to herself, in her own Nutcracker dream starring her Clara doll, though she did chime in several verses of carols when she heard familiar melodies over the bustle. Reinette and Maurin staged an impromptu variation of Romeo and Juliet, complete with a grand Lego balcony. Keith shepherded Shanni all around the hall - protecting her from a clatter of boisterous boys playing soldier, even procuring a pair of little cakes for them to share.

The adults eventually found the pair cuddled in the corner of a couch, holding hands even as they slept. By this time of the night, Selene was drowsing in her godfather's arms, Reinette was yawning, and Maurin was certain she wasn't tired, even as she rubbed her eyes. Keith fussed and Shanni whined as their mothers bundled them up. Roran helped herd the St. Germain sisters as the adults made their rounds of goodbyes, then they journeyed home - warm and happy after spending time in the company of friends.

"Miles, can you show me some of ....what you call spacecrafts?" Gwyn asked eagerly. She leaned forward to look at Miles. She gave him a charming smile.

He looked up and smiled at her.

"I am sorry to say i don't have any with me, but if your mother would permit me, maybe i can take you back to the space port and show you my shuttle. You actually flew in it a couple times when you were a baby."

He watched her face as her eyes got wide. "Only with your mother's permission, she might need to come along as i need supervision." He stopped and thought for a moment.

"I can show you something you might like." He looked around for a rock, finding one about the size of a walnut. He handed it to her. "When i tell you to, i want you to throw the rock that way into the clearing as high & far as you can, ok?" She nodded as she took the rock.

"Nothing will harm you, but there will be a small noise and a flash of light." He nodded to Gwyn.

"1...2...3...." He watched as she threw it as hard and fast as she could, within a second of her throwing it, he reached down and grabbed his weapon. I tube about 3/4 inch in diameter, and almost a foot long.

Miles brought the weapon to bare on his target and pushed the trigger that his thumb was resting on. A small whoosh was heard with a bluish light leaving the tube. Then the sound of cracking as the rock was hit and disintegrated.

There were gasps from the sudden noise and how quickly the rock was killed.

"He turned to Gwyn, this is what is know as a Force Lance, or F-lance. It is a long range, or close quarters weapon."

With a flick of his thumb on a switch around the ring, the tube extended out to almost 6 feet long.

"Now it is a very well balanced quarter staff. It can still fire in this mode, but..." He took some swings with it showing some basic moves...

"It's also used for close encounters..." He smiled to Gwyn. "Again with your mother's permission i can show you how to use the staff function..."

He noticed Mure and gave a smile. He always did like teaching.

Gwyn was amazed at the weapon Miles demonstrated. She would certainly ask her mother if she could operate it. She doubted her mother would object if she was properly supervised. She was excited. But she was getting cold and was starting to shiver.

"Master Miles, I like you. No wonder my mother thinks well of you. But I'm getting cold. I'd better return to the cottage." She stood and walked over to the spacer and gave him a hug. The small group broke up for they too were getting cold. The temperature was falling rapidly. Snow clouds were covering the rising moon. Soon it would be snowing again. Gwyn turned and hurried to the cottage. Murelle looked up as she came in.

"Gwyn, stand by the fire and warm yourself." Murelle walked over and stoked the fire to a larger blaze. "Your lips are blue."

A shivering Gwyn was glowing. She was fascinated with Miles.

Toby

As the evening had gone on, Toby had a quick aside with Murelle, and then found his way over to her well-tended upright piano, while Tabitha called the girls over (Keith and Shanni stayed together under Roran's watchful eye.)

After the general bustled died down from Murelle's calls to attention, Toby began to play a series of Terran Christmas carols and standards - he'd picked up the music some weeks before to practice. Not everyone there would know these songs, of course, but a few of them were actually *from* Earth, and for the rest Tabitha and the girls would be singing to guide them along.

After the last of the carols (Silent Night), the girls moved over to sit next to Xenograg while Tabitha stood alone by the piano. She paused a moment to ready herself, and then Toby began to play....and she began to sing.

(( This is the song, for reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch"v=L8_475FKJWQ ))

I have traveled many moonless nights Cold and weary with a babe inside..

And I wonder what I've done, Holy father you have come, And chosen me now to carry your son..

I am waiting in a silent prayer, I am frightened by the load I bear.. In a world as cold as stone, Must I walk this path alone"

Be with me now.. Be with me now..

Breath of heaven, Hold me together, Be forever near me.. Breath of heaven..

Breath of heaven, Lighten my darkness, Pour over me your holiness, For you are holy.. Breath of heaven..

Do you wonder as you watch my face? If a wiser one should have had my place.. But I offer all I am, For the mercy of your plan..

Help me be strong.. Help me be.. Help me..

Breath of heaven, Hold me together, Be forever near me.. Breath of heaven..

Breath of heaven, Lighten my darkness, Pour over me your holiness, For you are holy.. Breath of heaven..

Breath of heaven, Hold me together, Be forever near me.. Breath of heaven..

Breath of heaven, Lighten my darkness, Pour over me your holiness, For you are holy.. Breath of heaven.. Breath of heaven..

Breath of heaven..

Tabitha fell silent as Toby's fingers moved quietly over the outro, and then she smiled and stepped away from the piano.

Tabitha sang often at home, but this was the first time since walking the path into RhyDin a decade prior she sang in front of a crowd. Clear and bright, her delicate soprano projected warmth and comfort, intertwined with the lyrical doubt and wonder - her notes dancing with Toby's deliberate arpeggios.

Perhaps it was this that sent Keith and Shanni into sugarplum dreams as they nibbled their treats.

They hugged warmly. "How have you been friend" Is all of your family here"

Colleen smiled at Tele's question and the hug they shared, "No, not all of them, but quite a few!" A little grin flickered on her lips. "At this rate, one might be arriving while we are here!" An incline of her went to Rhi, who was settled in a comfortable chair and, at the moment, being fussed over by some of the older women among the guests. "She's not due until January, but she hasn't slowed down other than not participating in dueling competition."

That was when the beaming eleven year old Maggie put her two coppers in. "I'm doing the dueling for now!" On the young girl's right ring finger rested one of the seven baronial rings. She had followed in the footsteps of her mother, Rhiannon Harker, and her aunt, Rhiannon Brock T"r Gaird?n. Maggie dashed off to join the other children for the opening of gifts.

Murelle smiled brightly. Leaving the queen, she found Collie and handed her a gift wrapped box. Upon opening, a nice set of hat, scarf and gloves woven with white angora wool.

"These are beautiful, Mure! I'll enjoy them very much while riding this winter!" Collie had a thoughtful expression on her face as she pressed the soft woolen scarf against her cheek.

When the presents were all handed out, Maggie gently took her fiddle from its case and attempted to play a bit of dancing music. She made a face at the rough sounds she was making and handed off the instrument to her grandmother. "I'm not ready for public hearing, yet, Gran!" She laughed began dancing to the merry tune Colleen had begun to play.

The T"r Gaird"n family arrived at Murelle's cottage in Eldicor—Rhi (with passenger), little Colleen and Alinar, and Eregor bringing up the rear with gifts. Since Collie had prevailed upon him to supply some rare herbs for her own present to Mure, he and Rhi decided on a multi-tier plant stand of black metal scrollwork, to give her a place to let those herbs grow. Selecting a present for Gwyn was harder, but a few discreet inquiries led to a shopping trip in Rhydin's garment district and a stylish new all-season outfit plus a fleece sweater to warm up the winters.

"Thank you so much for inviting us, Murelle," he said to her, flashing a warm smile. "I don't think I've ever been to Eldicor myself, but I've heard many a tale. It's a lovely country, and it's clear that you do well by your folk in this barony."

The party was a success. Murelle felt honored by the turn out and she accepted the gift from Eregor with a happy, "Thank you! This is lovely!"

Listening to Tabitha sing warmed Murelle's soul. The chosen song was appropriate for the gathering and added a special feeling to the party. She led a round of applause when the song was finished. She stood and gave Tabitha and Toby a warm hug.

"That was beautiful. Thank you."

Murelle bid good night to those trickling out with sleepy little ones as they left the party. She stood at the door and was surprised when Miles walked in during a lull of traffic going out the door. He looked less stressed out and Murelle suggested he sit by the fire to warm himself.

"I'm ok." He answered. He squeezed her shoulder and went into the living room. Murelle watched him; her face showed she didn't believe him. But she didn't say anything. She would wait. She was determined to get him some help. He would find out she would be persistent. It was obvious to her that it was fate that brought him here, to find help with what was bothering him. It had to have been very traumatic. He didn't give her too much detail but the result of his trauma was apparent to her.

Her thoughts were interrupted by another good night to a family that was leaving. Murelle put her thoughts on hold for the moment. But her concern for her friend was still in the back of her mind.
