"Okay, so ..." Lucy sat down in front of Natasha, glancing toward the door. "The blood tests showed up that yes, they did use a version of the serum on you. It heightens your reflexes and endurance. It also suppressed your fertility."

Natasha frowned at her best friend's wife. "Why is that in past tense?" she asked warily.

Lucy sighed, rubbing her neck. "Because you're pregnant," she said bluntly.

There was a pause, and then the Storm house on the Grove erupted with a yell that must have been heard a good three houses away.

"What the hell"!"

It wasn't just most of Maple Grove who heard that yell, but most of the dogs in the area who started barking in unison, as if to alert the entire population of some impending danger. There was the sound of footsteps thudding through the house and then the door to Lucy's office opened with a slam and Steve stood there with Colin right behind him. He looked from one woman to the other, a little confused at not seeing anyone in any sort of danger.

"Uh, is everything okay' We heard someone scream and ..."

Colin peered past Steve at Lucy and Nat, with Coco pushing past his ankles and wandering uninvited into the room to hop into Nat's lap.

Nat was white as a sheet, rigid where she sat, glaring at Lucy as though this was entirely her fault. Her only movement was to open her arms and hold Coco when the dog jumped up into her lap.

Lucy was wincing as the men came in, her expression smoothing out into speechlessly careful blankness. "Um ..." She hesitated, and took the plunge. "You know what, Colin, you need to be in here and talk to your wife," she said, moving toward the door. "Steve, I need a drink."

"A drink ....in the middle of the day?" Steve asked, looking perplexed.

First of all, Lucy didn't really drink very often and secondly, it wasn't even noon yet. Behind him, Colin arched a brow, still getting used to the idea of being the Black Widow's other half. It wasn't all that unusual that Nat and Colin were there; after all, Nat was like a sister to both him and Lucy and an aunt to the kids, and Colin was working on getting better acquainted and finding his own place in the strange menagerie they called a family; but there was something else going on here besides that.

"Did you see a spider or something, love?" he asked Nat from the doorway, only belatedly realizing the absurdity of his question.

"In a manner of speaking." That was all Lucy was saying, taking her husband by the hand and pulling him out of the office.

Steve shut his mouth, looking a little confused, but confident Lucy would explain it to him once they were alone, leaving Colin alone with Nat to find out for himself what was going on. This left Colin alone with his new wife, who was still looking a little like death warmed up.

"Is everything okay?" he asked gently, stepping closer to crouch down in front of Nat while Steve and Lucy stepped out, closing the door behind them.

"Uh ..." Well, it was a sound, if not an actual word. Nat drew in a deep breath, rubbing her fingers through Coco's fur. "I just, uh ....just got a bit of a-a shock. Something I thought I knew turns out to be ....totally wrong. You can't get more wrong."

He furrowed his brows, unsure what it was she was trying to tell him. "Okay, well ....what is it' Is it something bad" Are we secretly related or something?" he asked, trying to add a little bit of levity, a small smile on his face, though his eyes still looked worried.

She huffed out a short laugh, her eyes grateful for a little levity. "I, uh, I don't know if it's bad, but ....it's big," she told him. "You remember I told you about the Red Room' About the graduation ceremony' Turns out they didn't do what I thought they did."

There went that brow of his again. "What did they do then?" he asked, unsure where she was going with this. It couldn't be what he thought it was, was it' No, that was impossible.

"They injected me with a serum," she told him. The only reason her voice was calm and she wasn't shaking was because her voice and her body were in the firm grip of her mind. "It heightens my reflexes, makes it easier to endure trauma and stresses. And, uh ....it suppressed my fertility."

"Right," he said, remembering what she'd told him before they'd gotten married, as if it might have mattered to him whether she was physically able to have children or not. "So, what didn't they do?" he asked, more pointedly.

"They didn't sterilize me," she blurted out, looking down fixedly at Coco's back. "Col, I'm ....I'm pregnant."

There was a moment of silence where Colin said nothing, only gaped open-mouthed at Nat, as if trying to decide whether or not this was some kind of mistake. "Nat, are you sure?" he asked, as gently as he could, before jumping to any conclusions.

"Lucy did the blood test," she said, glancing further down at herself as though studying something. "I guess I'm just ....not showing yet." She closed her eyes. "This is my fault. I should have been taking precautions."

"You did warn me that anything is possible on Rhy'Din," he reminded her, a soft smile on his face. He touched her chin to lift her face to meet his gaze. "I'm not upset, if that's what you're worried about. Surprised, but not upset."

"I just ..." Her eyes met his, searching his gaze for any hint that he might not mean what he was saying. "Things don't shock me. At least, they didn't, not until ..." Nat sighed, releasing some of her tension. "We never even talked about a family. I didn't think there was any risk of this happening without us knowing."

Colin frowned, wondering if she regretted what had happened - if she didn't want to be pregnant. "Nat, maybe you should just tell me what you're feeling. I know you didn't expect this. Neither of us expected it, but if you don't want the baby ..." He trailed off, not wanting to make any assumptions. He needed to know what she was feeling besides a sense of shock. Was she happy about the prospect of being a mother or was it just too soon for her to believe it yet"

"Col, I don't know what I'm feeling," she admitted, letting the facade crumble so he could see how shaken and lost she was. "I thought that this wasn't possible for me. I thought that, if we wanted a family, we'd have to adopt. I've never taken precautions against getting pregnant. I can't even remember the last time I had a period. Because I thought I didn't have the goods to do this with. And now I'm pregnant, and ....and that's a good thing, but ....I have no idea what to do."

"Nat, you're not alone anymore," he reminded her gently, reaching for her hands, even if Coco objected. "We're in this together, remember" That's what this means," he said, indicating the single circlet she was wearing on her left ring finger.

Another low huff of a laugh answered him as he reminded her of the vows they'd taken not that long ago. "I'm trying," she promised him. "I know I'm not alone. So what do we do?"

"Well, for starters, what do you think about moving to Rhy'Din?" he asked her abruptly, trying to hide the smile from his face. It made sense, after all. Most of the people she cared about and that she considered family lived here, not back on Earth, and with Hydra defeated, there wasn't much need for her in New York right now. Maybe it was time for the Black Widow to retire - or at the very least, to take some well-deserved time off.

"Really?" But it wasn't disbelief or rejection of his idea on her face or in her voice ....it was hope. Nat had quietly been holding onto the idea of maybe moving to Rhy'Din, to be closer to the people she considered family. She knew Clint would be a little put out, but he was well-settled and it was only a portal hop away. "You'd really do that for me?"

There wasn't much he wouldn't do for her, even if he didn't say so out loud ....yet. "It might take some getting used to on my part, but yes. Why not?" His smile softened as he turned serious, giving her hands a soft squeeze. "Nat, I love you. There isn't much I wouldn't do for you. Don't you know that?"

She stared at him for a long moment, her gaze softening all the while until there was the woman he'd uncovered on their honeymoon - the girl still inside her who didn't show herself often, but who drove everything with a gentle hand. "I love you," she answered in kind, her voice barely a whisper. "I really do, Col, I love you."

He smiled in response to her declaration of love. "I know," he replied. He didn't have to hear her say it to know that; he could already see it in her smiles and kisses and caresses and even in the way she looked at him when she didn't think he noticed. He proved his own point by brushing a soft kiss to her lips and nudging her nose with his own. "Whatever we decide, we'll decide it together."

"Sure, Captain Solo, let's do that." The wry warmth had returned to her voice as he kissed her, despite Coco's mild complaint about being wedged between them as they shared a kiss. "I guess we talk to Steve and Lucy and find out where we can buy a house around here, then."

There might not be much call for spies in Rhy'Din, but he was confident they'd find some way to earn a living here, and in truth, that was the least of his worries. "I guess we do. The question is do we want a house big enough for a family, or just for the two of us?" he asked, half-knowing the answer to that question already.

There were few things that Nat couldn't get complete control over before they registered on her face, but the sudden fall of her expression from a smile to a horrified frown should have been all the answer he needed. "You ....you don't want it?"

"Do you want it?" he asked, turning the question back around on her. Of course, he wanted the baby, but did she" He was offering her a different kind of life than that of a spy and assassin, but was it what she wanted" He had to be sure. He didn't want to force anything on her that she didn't truly want for herself. "Nat, I love you. I want to be with you, whether we have a family or not. I know it's a shock, but do you want the baby' Do you want to be a mother?" he asked her point-blank.

"Yes!" It was a blurt, but it was a definite response. "Yes, I want this baby, our baby! I'm going to be a terrible mother, but that's fine, because they'll have you to stop them being a screw up!"

Colin laughed, but he wasn't so much laughing at her as he was at her response to the prospect of being a mother. It was just so Nat. Everyone else around her knew how amazing she was. Why couldn't she see it for herself" "Okay, okay. No argument here. I never thought I'd be a father either, you know. We'll fumble through it together," he told her, like they did everything else.

"We're gonna have to," she said, absently rubbing Coco's ears. She paused, glancing toward the door. "I guess I should apologize to Lucy. I think I might have scared the doc a bit."

"I'm pretty sure she's heard worse," he said, chuckling. "So, a house for a family then. Do you think they'll have us at Maple Grove, or should we look elsewhere?" he asked further.

"I think we have to ask the Grangers if we wanna live on the Grove," Nat mused. "And probably actually buy the house, too - I doubt they'll extend the honorary Grangers thing to us just because we know the Storms. But, uh ....I think I'd be happier living closer to them if we can?"

"I'll talk to Steve about it later," he said, though Steve would likely refer him to Johnny who would refer him to Jon who would refer him to Humphrey. The Grangers took their peace and solitude seriously and rarely let anyone who wasn't family move in without serious consideration. Then again, there was an open invitation to any and all who were in need of a safe haven, but that hardly defined Nat and Colin.

"Or ....or we could go and talk to the Old Man ourselves," Nat suggested warily. She'd met Humphrey once or twice; he knew who she was, at the very least. It seemed like a more respectful idea to talk to him directly, than to use their connections to add an emotionally manipulative element into their pitch.

"We could," Colin agreed. "We'll need his permission if we're to move here, and perhaps he'll have some insight into how we can earn a living," he said, though there was no real hurry. It would presumably be some months before their child was born, which was plenty of time to sort things out.

"So it ....it sounds like we have a plan," Nat said quietly, relief coloring her tone. "And an explanation as to why you have been all over me since we got back from Malta." This was said to Coco, who simply licked her cheek happily.

Colin chuckled. "Sometimes I think she loves you more than me," he said, though it hardly mattered. He was glad Coco had taken to Nat so well and vice versa. He wanted both his girls to get along with each other, after all.

"Hey, girls gotta stick together," was Nat's reply. She scooched Coco off her lap, rising onto her feet to pull Colin up with her. "So ....I guess my figure's gonna go to hell pretty soon."

Colin smiled, his arms going around her waist as she pulled him to his feet. "I doubt that will change my feelings about you," he assured her, imagining a pleasantly plump and pregnant Natasha in his head. Somehow, he found that image in his head almost as adorable as the vision in his arms. "I love you, Nat," he told her again, for perhaps only the second time since they'd met. It wasn't that he didn't love her; only that he had trouble properly expressing that love in words.

"It had better not change your feelings, because you're stuck with me now," she reminded him in a slow drawl, rising onto her toes to brush a kiss to his mouth. "I'm sorry I freaked out. It's a big thing to find out that I'm not the way I always thought I was, you know?"

"Nothing will ever change my feelings for you, love," he assured her, before returning her kiss with a tender kiss of his own. He smiled at her apology, looking more amused than upset. "I expect it would be a bit of a shock," he said. More than a bit really. "But hopefully a pleasant one?"

"Ask me again when I can't see my own feet," she suggested impishly. "C'mon, I should apologize to Luce before she drinks herself into a stupor and worries Steve."

"Somehow, I think Lucy is made of a little stronger stuff than that," he remarked, with another kiss, this time to the tip of her nose before releasing her. "Congratulations, Nat. You're gonna be a Mama," he told her with a soft smile.

"And you're going to be a Papa," she countered, sliding her fingers between his. "Think you can handle the screaming and the crying and having a baby to look after as well?"

"Are we talking about the baby or us?" he teased, regarding the screaming and crying. Considering everything they'd both been through in life, he thought raising a family would be a piece of cake.

She laughed quietly, squeezing his hand. "We'll just have to wait and see, won't we" C'mon, Coco, where's Thor" Find Thor!" As the beautiful spaniel scrabbled across the wooden floor and out through the door, Nat tugged on Colin's hand. "One of these days, we should introduce her to the real Thor."

"Or introduce Thor to the canine version," he said, chuckling again. The thought of the Norse God meeting his canine namesake was an amusing one. Would he be honored or annoyed"

"Oh, I hope I'm there to see that," Nat chuckled, leading the way through the house toward the kitchen. It was generally a safe bet to assume Lucy and Steve were in there. "Marco!"

"Polo!" Steve replied from the kitchen, where he and Lucy were sitting at the table, apparently chit chatting. Probably about them, Colin realized, though Steve was too polite to say so.

Lucy's expression was worried and wary as they stepped into the kitchen, more concerned for them than any fear for herself. Nat met her gaze with her familiar rueful smile. "Sorry for the yelling, doc," she apologized. "I don't do shock."

"I'll try to remember that in future, then," Lucy answered, her own smile reappearing in relief.

Colin grinned upon realizing that neither Steve or Lucy seemed to know whether he and Nat were happy with the news she had given Nat. It was even possible Captain Rogers didn't know yet, and for some reason, Colin found that amusing. For once, it was possible he knew something about Nat before Steve did.

Almost in proof of that fact, Steve turned to the couple, looking a little confused. "Did I miss something?"

"A little something," Nat told her friend, glancing up at Colin as her grin grew. "Do you wanna tell him, or shall I?"

At the table, Lucy bit down on a low laugh, rising to her feet to fetch out the pitcher of iced tea from the fridge.

"No, I think you should tell him. It's mostly your news, after all," Colin replied, pulling a chair our for Nat, like the perfect gentleman that he was, though Nat was certainly independent enough to do it herself.

"What news?" Steve asked, looking from one to the other. His gaze moved to Lucy, just barely catching what looked like a smirk before she got up and went to the fridge. The couple was already married, so that certainly wasn't it, and he'd read Nat's file, so he knew she couldn't possibly be pregnant. Had they decided to adopt"

Easing down into the seat Colin held for her, Nat smiled as she waited for him to join her. He was the only person she allowed to be a gentleman in direct confrontation with her independence, which said a fair amount for the way she felt about him. But now it was time to have a little fun with Steve.

"How do you feel about being an uncle again?" she asked her friend casually.

"An uncle?" Steve echoed, as Colin claimed the chair beside Nat. "Are you two thinking of adopting?" he asked, still under the assumption that Nat could not have children. They hadn't been married long, but he didn't think that mattered.

"No, that's a discussion we might have in the future," Nat told him, enjoying the opportunity to drag this out a little. "You know you keep saying anything is possible on Rhy'Din" Well, now you've got proof. We're having a baby, old man."

Steve didn't even blink at being called an old man, but he did have an incredulous and slightly confused expression on his face at the news that they were having a baby. "A baby?" he echoed, looking between them again. "You mean ..." he started, gesturing vaguely at Nat. "....you're ....you know ..."

"According to your wife, I am," Nat nodded. "Ever known her to be wrong?"

Lucy snorted with laughter as she returned to the table, pouring out iced tea for Nat and Colin. "That's a slightly unfair question, you know."

Steve smirked at the question, which was a little too open-ended for even him to resist. "On occasion, but not when it comes to medical matters," he admitted, that smirk aimed at Lucy before turning a more serious glance back at Nat and Colin. "You're serious," he said, knowing this was not something Nat would ever joke about. "That's ....I mean, it's nothing short of a miracle."

"Kind of is, isn't it?" Nat agreed, linking her hand with Colin's affectionately. "No idea how it happened."

Lucy took the opening offered to her. "If I had to guess, I'd say it's the effect of the Nexus working on your system when you pass through the portals to get to and from Rhy'Din," she offered. "There's a standing joke here that the water gets you pregnant, but it's far more likely that the process of passing through the Nexus re-establishes connections in the body that have otherwise gone astray."

"I'm not sure I understand what all that means, but we can't argue with the results," Colin interjected.

Steve smiled, taking the news in stride and genuinely happy for them, especially Nat, who he knew adored children more than she'd ever admit. Though surprised, he had seen stranger things happen. "I guess congratulations are in order then. Luce, where's that bottle of champagne we've been saving for a special occasion?" he asked, getting to his feet. He looked back at Nat a moment, a thoughtful expression on his face. "Are pregnant women allowed to drink champagne?"

Nat blinked, her eyes automatically turning toward Lucy. After all, Lucy was the doctor - more than that, she'd been pregnant more than once by this point.

Lucy chuckled. "One glass won't do any harm."

"Do you remember where we put it?" Steve asked again, once Lucy gave the go-ahead for a little champagne.

Colin lifted Nat's hand to touch a kiss to her fingers in a brief display of affection, as if to give her courage.

Lucy considered this for a moment. "In the cupboard only you can reach, I think," she said thoughtfully, holding her husband's gaze. Thank goodness all the children were elsewhere today, though - that cupboard was a secret from them, since that was where Christmas and birthday presents were secreted away. After all, if Lucy couldn't reach it, they definitely couldn't.

As for Nat, she was slowly relaxing into more of herself, leaning trustingly toward Colin as he kissed her fingers with a tilted wry smile.

Steve knew exactly which cupboard Lucy was referring to and went to it with a triumphant, "A-ha!" as he located what he was looking for. He pulled up a bottle of champagne he and Lucy had been saving for a special occasion - one given them by Tony Stark from his private wine cellar.

"I thought you were saving that for Martin's graduation?" Nat teased in amusement, not bothering to correct her stance. She was comfortable leaning against Colin, and to be honest, she'd seen Steve and Lucy in any number of strange but endearing positions over the years.

"Martin isn't going to graduate for a while," Steve pointed out. "I'm sure we can get another bottle to replace it," he added, knowing all he had to do was ask Tony for one or buy one himself. "If this isn't a special occasion, I don't know what is," he said, as he searched the kitchen drawers for a corkscrew.

"I won't argue with that," Colin agreed with a grin.

"How far along do you think we are?" Nat asked Lucy quietly.

Lucy blinked, rubbing a hand through her short hair. "Oh, I don't know," she admitted. "I don't know when you two started sleeping together, do I" But if I had to guess, going by the levels in the blood test ....somewhere between twelve and sixteen weeks."

Colin coughed at Lucy's blunt remark. He wasn't about to share the details of what they did in private or when they had started sleeping together. If one did the math, they could figure it out for themselves, after all. They hadn't known each other very long, but long enough, apparently, to make a baby.

Steve smirked at his wife's bluntess, too, but made no excuses. She was a doctor, after all.

"You said it probably had something to do with the Nexus," Colin pointed out, knowing Nat had been traveling back and forth from Rhy'Din for years before she met Colin.

"I don't mean the Nexus impregnated your wife, Colin," Lucy pointed out with a grin. "That's all you. But the Nexus is kind of sentient. It might have just decided to fix the fertility issue when the two of you first came through together. It has whims sometimes."

"What I mean is, perhaps the Nexus ....fixed the issue before we met," Colin suggested, though it was probably a moot point. "There's no chance the bloodwork is wrong, is there?" he asked further, not wanting to get his or Nat's hopes up for nothing.

"I ran the samples four times," Lucy assured him. "Mainly because I know that if I got it wrong, Nat might possibly try to remove my brain via my nose."

Natasha snorted, rolling her eyes. "I wouldn't do any permanent damage," she pointed out.

Lucy chuckled. "True. But no, you're probably right, Colin. I don't know much about interdimensional physics, so I couldn't say."

"What does it matter when it happened?" Steve asked, the question followed by a loud popping sound as he got the cork out of the bottle.

Colin shrugged. "It doesn't really. I'm just curious about this Nexus of yours," he pointed out, not that it mattered.

Steve procured four glasses from the cupboard and started to pour. "The Nexus is how I ended up here," he told them.

"Whatever it is, it has a somewhat whimsical sense of humor," Lucy mused, passing the glasses to Colin and Nat as Steve poured them. "Although I'm not sure even the Nexus could have predicted what would happen in throwing Steve at me. Almost literally, as it turned out."

"How'd that happen?" Colin asked, having heard bit and pieces of the story, but not all of it in its entirety. He was still learning about Rhy'Din and the Nexus and knew he had a lot to learn if he and Nat were going to move here.

Steve furrowed his brows at the question. "I'm not sure exactly."

"All we've got to go on are anecdotes, finding the patterns in the stories people tell about being picked up by the Nexus," Lucy explained. "That pattern would suggest that the Nexus responds to need - the majority of people who have ended up on Rhy'Din unexpectedly have found something here that makes their lives better."

Steve smiled at Lucy's explanation. "As for me, I found Lucy. It was only later that we learned she was related to Peggy," he explained, before realizing Colin probably had no idea who he was talking about. "Sorry, it's a long story," he said, apologizing. "Anyway, what Lucy says is true. The Nexus seems to somehow know what people here need and sort of gives it to them."

"Or at least it puts them in a position to find it." Lucy shrugged. "We can't really complain. Without the Nexus, Steve and I would never have met."

"We might have ....eventually," Steve pointed out. What with Tony Stark being Liv and Lucy's half-brother and Peggy their great aunt, but it certainly would have taken a lot longer, if it had even happened at all. "I gave up trying to figure it all out a long time ago," he admitted with a shrug. He lifted his glass of bubbly to toast the couple's good news. "Shall we?"

"Absolutely," Lucy agreed, raising her own glass. "To Nat and Colin - congratulations on the whole married with children thing."

Nat laughed as she raised her own glass.

"I'll drink to that," Colin said, lifting his own glass with a sideways smile at Nat.

"To happily ever-afters," added Steve, showing his old fashioned preference for stories with happy endings, especially where his friends were concerned.

There was a multitude of clinking noises as glasses touched, and silence for a moment after as everyone sipped. Then Lucy, who loved to be in on everyone's business anyway, piped up again.

"So what are you going to do now" You can't raise a baby in the A.E.G.I.S. H.Q."

Colin arched a brow at Lucy's continued bluntness and turned a glance at Nat, feeling it was up to her how to answer that question. They weren't entirely sure what they were going to do yet, but they had seemed to have decided not to raise their child on Earth.

Steve looked between them, sensing something had already been decided, though he wasn't sure what that was. He knew Nat well enough, though, to feel comfortable in making a suggestion. "You could always live here. On Rhy'Din, I mean. New York is only a portal hop away if we're needed."

Nat caught Colin's glance, smiling gently. She knew Steve and Lucy would be all over any hint of what they actually were hoping for, but this was something she actually wanted to try and achieve without their help. A surprise for them, as much as a reward for herself and her new family. "We're thinking about it," she said carefully. "There are a lot of things we have to talk about and plan for, and ....well, we only found out less than an hour ago. Cool your jets, doc."

Steve knew better than to try and convince Nat to move to Rhy'Din. If and when she made that decision, she'd do it on her own and with Colin. It was only right, as he was her husband. "You know you're always welcome here," he said, looking to each one in turn. "Both of you."

Colin smiled, getting the hint that Nat didn't want to divulge their plans just yet - not until they were sure anyway. He appreciated the way Steve and Lucy had made him a welcome part of their family, though they hardly knew him. "We appreciate that, but we have a few things to sort out before we make any final decisions," he said, reaching for Nat's hand to link his fingers with hers.

"Well, if you need any baby things, we have plenty to share," Lucy pointed out. "Including a vast amount of clothing for little boys and girls. That doesn't need worrying over for a while yet, though - your first doctory thing is to get yourselves a dating scan, so you know how long you've got."

"A dating scan, right," Colin echoed. "Can we do that here?" he asked curiously, wondering just how good the medical care was here. He hadn't seen a lot of Rhy'Din yet, and most of what he'd seen had been pretty primitive, aside from Maple Grove.

"Oh, yes." Lucy nodded confidently around another sip from her glass. "There are a few medical advancements here that they consider normal, but on the whole, the care is very similar to the care you'd get on Earth. Just don't go into the Spaceport looking for medical help - you'll end up with body scans and bacta treatments."

"Bacta treatments?" Colin echoed, a puzzled expression on his face. "Spaceport?" he added, a questioning look to Nat.

Steve had a sympathetic smile on his face. "Yeah, with spaceships and everything. It's like something from a science fiction movie," he said, having seen a few in his day, not to mention the more modern films.

"Anything is possible," Lucy reminded him gently. "What we would think of as futuristic is an everyday occurrence in that part of the city. They tend not to mix, though - the more contemporary parts of the city are a little backward for them."

Nat rolled her eyes. "Just, you know, a basic baby doctor would be a good start for us."

"Rhy'Din General would probably be a good start," Steve suggested. "I mean, if you want someone here." There were plenty of good doctors back on Earth, but he wasn't sure if that was what Nat was asking for. "I'm sure Lucy could give you some names."

"Or there's the independent midwife we used with the twins," Lucy added. "But Steve's right - you need to decide where you're going to be looking at care before you start making connections with people."

Nat nodded thoughtfully, glancing at Colin. It looked as though they were going to be talk to Mr. Granger at the big house sooner rather than later.

Steve got the feeling there was some unspoken understanding between the couple, but he wasn't the type to pry. "Rhy'Din's a strange place, Colin," he said in an attempt to explain the place a little better. "It's a unique mix of cultures, races, and technology, thanks to the Nexus."

Colin nodded, understanding that much at least. "I suppose it will take some time to get used to it."

"But enough about the boring sensible stuff!" Lucy declared suddenly. "Boy or girl, what are you hoping for?" She grinned enthusiastically at the pair of them, unsurprised when Nat burst out laughing.

Steve pulled out a chair for Lucy and topped off three out of the four glasses of champagne, taking Lucy's statement seriously about Nat only having one glass.

"I haven't had much time to think about it!" Colin admitted, echoing Nat's laughter with a chuckle of his own.

"So long as the baby is healthy," Steve pointed out.

"Well, yeah," Nat agreed. "I guess we've just gotta hope that the serum doesn't affect the baby badly."

Lucy shook her head. "I'm fairly sure it won't," she said confidently. "You might have a baby with good reflexes, but everything the serum did heightened your own instincts in motion, Nat. It didn't actually change you in any way."

"The serum hasn't affected Jamie or the twins, so far as we can tell," Steve said, though he knew the serum used on Nat was different from the one used on him; and the kids were still too young to tell if they'd exhibit any special abilities when they were older.

"Is it the same serum?" Colin asked. He'd read both their files, but he wasn't too sure whether the same formula had been used on both of them. He'd been under the impression that the formulation of the super serum that had enhanced Steve had been lost in the First World War.

"No." Nat answered for them. "The serum used on Steve is unique. Every other serum has been an attempt to recreate it, with varying levels of success."

"Hydra's been working on a serum for years in an attempt to make an army of super soliders," Steve explained further. He didn't bother to point out that the kids had been tainted by such experiments or that Nikolai had been one of Hydra's test subjects.

"But Hydra aren't a problem we need to worry about any longer," Lucy said gently, reaching over to touch Steve's hand. They'd fought hard to put Hydra down for another generation - it would be someone else's problem when they resurfaced.

"Not for a long time anyway," Steve added, smiling at Lucy. He'd struggled almost all his adult life to defeat Hydra, and now that they'd succeeded, he wasn't quite sure what to do with himself.

Sensing that this could easily devolve into a private moment between husband and wife, Nat cleared her throat. "Where did you put the munchkins today' I would have thought this place would be in chaos getting ready for school and stuff."

For now, Steve was content to focus on being a husband and father, and people knew how to contact him if they needed him. "At the treehouse. Where else?" Steve replied, smiling at the mention of munchkins. At least, the older ones were at the treehouse, including Jamie. "The twins are taking a nap."

"Which will be over in the not so distant future," Lucy warned with a grin. "Your choice if you want to stay for dinner or run away and celebrate your news yourselves."

Colin chuckled at Lucy's warning. "I'll leave that up to Nat," he said, unsure how she felt about that. As far as he knew, she wasn't exhibiting any signs of pregnancy yet. He hadn't noticed any sickness or tiredness yet, but maybe that was still to come.

Nat considered it for a moment. "I think," she said slowly, "as much as I love your munchkins, we should probably get away before they drag us in for the whole evening."

Lucy smiled - it was easy to understand that wish. Big news needed time to sink in, after all. And they needed time to discuss it and decide what to do, though there was no rush.

"We'll have you over for dinner another night," Steve said. There was no rush on that either. Nat came and went as she pleased, and he assumed Colin would accompany her.

"Yeah, you will," Nat predicted with easy confidence. "But thank you, both of you. This is ....big, but we'll work it out together. And we wouldn't have known without you guys, so ....thank you."

"Nat," Steve said, with that big-brotherly tone of voice. "Remember, Hydra is defeated. You don't have to save the world all by yourself. Take some time off to figure things out," he said, in an attempt to offer advice that he'd had a hard time getting used to himself.

The redhead hesitated for a moment, but this was a decision that didn't need much thinking about. "I, uh, I think I'm going to resign," she said thoughtfully. "Stay as a consultant, not a full-time member of the team. Because I'm ....I'm married, and we're going to have a baby, and ....I don't want to neglect my-my family just because that's what I've always done."

"That makes two of us," Colin said, smiling at Nat and giving her hand a reassuring squeeze. It wasn't like either of them was hurting for money - at least, not for the time being - and they had a lot to think about and sort out.

Steve looked over at Lucy, a small smile playing about his lips. "I think Hell just froze over," he teased, though he looked pleased by Nat's decision. "Does this mean we'll be seeing more of you?"

Reassured that Colin had independently come to the same decision himself, Nat relaxed, squeezing his hand in turn. She smiled, tilting her head toward Steve. "Could be, yeah," she said, though she wasn't making any promises. But if she got what she wanted, Steve might be seeing a lot more of his friend.

Lucy's smile was quietly proud of their friend. "Well, one thing I do know," she said confidently. "That child is going to want for nothing with you two in charge of it."

Colin chuckled at what Lucy was saying. "Maybe, but we don't want to raise a spoiled brat either," he said.

"Not spoiled," Steve pointed out. "Just loved." He wasn't sure what Colin's childhood was like, but three of the four of them there had had less than happy childhoods and seemed determined to make sure that wasn't repeated with their own children.

"Hey, I can break up a fight between Thor, Ironman, and Captain America," Nat pointed out. "I think I can handle a kid." Which was a world away from what she had initially said about her prospects as a mother.

Steve laughed at her remark. "The kids adore you, Nat," he reminded her. "I'm sure you're gonna make a great mom," he said, believing in her even when she didn't believe in herself. "Come here," he said, moving to his feet and opening his arms for a brotherly hug.

"Oh god, you're gonna be all over the bump when it appears, aren't you?" Nat drawled, but she was already rising to take Steve's hug with a grin.

Lucy looked over at Colin. "Don't worry, I'm not going to hug you," she assured him. "Yet."

Colin chuckled, looking both relieved and alarmed all at once, not because Steve was hugging Nat, but because Lucy seemed to imply he was getting one from her sooner or later. "Thanks for the warning," he said, moving to his feet. He got the feeling they were being very gently kicked out to celebrate in private.

Meanwhile, Steve was whispering something in Nat's ear while he offered that hug. "I'm happy for you, Nat."

Wrapped up in Steve's hug - because, damn, that man gave good hugs - Nat shuddered just a little, letting him understand how scary the idea of being a mother was for that one brief moment. Then she drew herself under control, squeezing him gently. "I'm happy too."

"Anything you need, we're here for you, okay?" he added, for her ears alone, though he knew Lucy would concur, and Colin would probably appreciate the gesture. She was family, after all, and family took care of each other.

Nat nodded, smiling as she drew back. "I'm lucky to know you, Steve," she said quietly. "Thanks."

"The feeling is mutual, Nat," he said, pulling away to give her space. Though neither had any family of their own, they seemed to have claimed each other as part of their chosen family. Steve turned to Colin, not forgetting him, and offering a hand. "Congratulations, Colin. I expect we'll be seeing more of you."

"I expect you will," Colin replied, returning that handshake.

While behind the men, given permission tacitly by the mere fact that a hug had already happened, Lucy dragged Nat into a hug of her own, murmuring a little advice about heartburn into her ear in the process.

Once the hugs and handshakes and congratulations were through, Colin reached for Nat's hand to reclaim her. "We'll be in touch," he said. "Thank you both for everything," he added, waiting for Nat to head toward the door.

"You're family," Lucy said easily, walking with them toward the door with Steve's hand firmly in her own. "That's all there is to it."

Nat chuckled, rolling her eyes. "Thanks all the same, but don't tell Stark that," she suggested.

Steve laughed, knowing Tony meant well, even if he did grate on his nerves most of the time. "Mum's the word," Steve replied, locking his lips with an imaginary key and throwing it away. Whether she was talking about his remark about family or the news that Nat was pregnant, she could be sure Steve wasn't talking. He might be honest, but he knew how to keep a secret.

"We'll see you 'round," Nat told them, drawing Colin out through the door and into the sunshine, just as a whining voice from the upper level announced that the twins were awake.

Lucy sighed, laughing. "Perfect timing."

"You knew the peace and quiet wasn't going to last forever!" Steve said with a laugh, as he tossed a wave to their departing friends and turned back around to check on the no-longer napping twins.

As the door shut behind them, Nat turned to look up at Colin. "So, Mr. Prescott," she said curiously, "how do you feel about visiting a grumpy old man?"

"I thought we just got finished visiting an old man," Colin teased back, though he didn't think Steve grumpy in the least.

She laughed, looping her arm about his waist, her other hand busy getting a decent grip on Coco's leash. "He's only technically older than me," she pointed out.

"You two are pretty close," Colin said, more an observation than anything else. There wasn't a jealous bone in his body, at least where Steve Rogers was concerned. The man was obviously devoted to his wife and children and seemed to think of Nat as a sisterly figure.

"Yeah, I'm not entirely sure how that happened," she admitted as they headed for the lane. "I guess because we worked together so much at S.H.I.E.L.D., we got to know each other pretty well. He needed a friend."

"And you didn't?" Colin asked, nudging her arm gently, a soft smile on his face. He knew she was close friends with Clint Barton, too, but he hadn't seen her with him as much as he had with Steve.

She huffed out a quiet laugh. "I guess I did," she shrugged. "Clint has Laura and the kids, he has done ever since I've known him. Steve was all alone, and so was I. It made sense. And no, I have never wanted to get in his panties, so shush on that score."

"No, you two don't seem to have that kind of relationship," Colin said, having noticed that right away. There were some who believed men and women couldn't be just friends, but he wasn't one of them. "Just so you know, I'm not jealous. A little envious maybe, but not jealous."

"Envious?" She tilted her head to look up at him. "You know ....you haven't introduced me to any of your friends. It's all been friends on my side."

"I have colleagues, not friends," Colin pointed out, though that was hard to believe. He seemed a friendly enough sort not to have at least a few friends, but he also had a tendency to keep to himself a lot.

"Yeah, I used to do that," she told him. "It helps to have friends, Col. Even just one person you can relax around is enough."

"I thought that was you," he teased further, though he understood what she was trying to say. "Honestly, Nat, I'm fine. Maybe I'll make some friends here. Would that satisfy you?" he asked, that smirk on his face again.

She smiled, leaning into him affectionately. "You being happy in yourself and with our family would satisfy me," she told him firmly. "Our relationship isn't all about me."

"I know that, Nat, but it's important to me that you're happy, too," he told her, sliding an arm around her shoulders and leaning in to brush a kiss against her cheek.

"I am happy," she promised him, smiling again as his lips brushed her cheek. "A little shocked, a little overwhelmed, but ....for the first time in my life, I'm happy with who I am and who I'm with. That's all you, you know."

"I'm happy, too, Nat. That is not all me," he replied, insisting she had as much to do with his happiness as he had to do with hers, but not in so many words. "So, what are we going to do' Tender our resignations, move to Rhy'Din, and live happily ever after?" he asked, only partly teasing.

"I think that sounds like a good place to start," she countered, more serious than teasing but warm with all of it. "C'mon. Let's go and at least make an appointment to meet Mr. Granger. He's got a bit of a reputation as a grumpy old man, but a good head for business."

"Is this a business deal, then?" he asked, wondering how much it would cost them to live in this place. It couldn't cost as much as it did to live in New York, could it"

"We're not family, and we don't work for the family," Nat reminded him. "We're friends of friends of the family. I think we're probably looking at buying a lease here on the Grove for a fixed term - maybe a hundred years or something like that."

"A hundred years?" Colin echoed. "That's a long time, Nat. Do people live that long here?" he asked, knowing very little about Rhy'Din, but slowly learning. Very few people on Earth lived to be a hundred years old.

Nat tilted her head toward him curiously. "A lot of leases on Earth are for a hundred years," she pointed out to him. "On protected buildings, mostly, but I think the same sort of thing applies here. I don't know what the average lifespan on Rhy'Din is, but I doubt either of us is going to stil be spry at one hundred."

"You never know," he said, smirking as he hip-bumped her gently. He hardly cared if he lived to be one hundred or not, so long as they were together. He had promised to love her 'til death do them part, though he hoped that was later, rather than sooner.

She laughed at this optimistic reply. "Honey, if you can still get it up at one hundred, I'll give you a dollar for every year of your life," she told him teasingly.

"I guess we'll just have to wait and see," he said, still teasing, though he knew it was unlikely. They'd probably both be lucky to live to ninety, much less one hundred, though he wasn't too sure what effect this place might have on either of them.

"I guess we will," she agreed. "And by then, this kiddo will be in their sixties, so it'll be their problem anyway." She grinned up at him, jumping suddenly as Coco let out a joyful bark and began straining at her leash. It appeared that the loveable collie up at the big house was in.

Colin chuckled at her remark, before turning his head toward Coco, alarmed for a moment at her barking. He relaxed as soon as he realized it was her happy, friendly bark. "Someone or something has her excited," he said, stating the obvious. He assumed it was probably some person, though he wasn't sure who. He and Coco were both pretty new to Rhy'Din and didn't really know anyone yet, except Steve and Lucy.

"There's a collie at the big house," Nat warned him. "He's ....very friendly." Coco certainly seemed to think so, bouncing on the end of her leash in hopeful excitement.

"Oh, that makes sense," he said. She was sensing the other dog and hoping to make friends, or so he assumed. She'd always been friendly, too, and he hoped Nat was right about the collie.

It wasn't long before an echoing bark could be heard coming from the direction of the big house they were approaching. The front door opened, and a man stepped onto the porch with the collie on a leash. He laughed at the sight of the couple with the eager-looking cocker spaniel.

"Oh, that's what you're all excited about," he said, mostly to the collie.

"Mr. Granger?" Nat called to the man, assuming this was Jonathan Granger. She wasn't a big movie-watcher. "Sorry, we weren't expecting her to get so excited about meeting your dude there."

It was indeed Jonathan Granger, the so-called "movie star", though he hadn't appeared in a movie in a few years. Back on Earth, he was thought to be a recluse, but that was only because he was rarely there, too busy living his life here. He lifted a hand in greeting before moving down the stairs to greet the couple.

"Hello! I've seen you around. You're friends of Steve and Lucy's, aren't you?" he asked, as if he was a little uncertain.

"Yeah." Unhooking her arm from about Colin as Coco and Cosmo investigated each other, Natasha offered the man her hand. "Natasha Roma- Prescott. Natasha Prescott. This is my husband, Colin."

Jon stepped forward, smiling as he took her hand in a firm but gentle grip of his own before doing the same with Colin. "Nice to meet you both. I'm Jon, and this bundle of hyperactive fur is Cosmo," he said, introducing himself by his first name, as well as the collie.

"Likewise," Colin said, returning the handshake and the smile. "I have to say, I'm a big fan. Triple Dark, Murder of Crowes, Swan Song. Belated congrats on the Oscar," he told the actor.

Jon chuckled and shrugged, as if it was nothing. "Thanks. All in a day's work, you know?"

Nat smiled as she watched them, keeping a firm grip on Coco's lead. She might not know exactly who Jon was, or have seen any of his movies, but it was nice to see Colin enthusing over something that wasn't her, Coco, or a computer.

"I assume you're here visiting," Jon said. "How do you like Rhy'Din, so far? It's a lot different from Earth," he said, assuming they'd been just out for a stroll with the dog and had wandered by.

"Yeah, we've just left Steve and Lucy," Nat told him, glancing at Colin for a moment before plunging on. "Actually, Mr. Granger ....we were wondering if it would be possible to speak to your, uh ....grandfather" The elder Mr. Granger?"

"Jon," he insisted with a friendly smile. "And you mean my uncle. Great Uncle, actually. Humphrey." He arched his brows curiously. "What's this about' Nothing too serious, I hope."

"Actually, we were hoping to talk to him about the possibility of leasing a home here at the Grove. It seems a safe place, and it's close to friends," Colin offered, though he wasn't sure just how much Nat wanted him to say.

"We don't have anyone but friends," Nat added quietly, glancing down as Coco followed Cosmo around Jon's legs, threatening to tie him up in both leashes if he didn't pay attention.

Jon's attention was distracted momentarily by the dogs, as he worked to untangle himself from the leashes. "Cosmo, sit!" he commanded, and the dog did just that, though his tail was thumping against the ground in excitement. Jon rolled his eyes. "He's like this every time there's another dog around," he said, making excuses for the dog. "My uncle is home, but I'm not sure if he's up to visitors. If you want to wait a few minutes, I'll go check," he offered.

"If he's not up to it, we can come back another day," Nat assured him with a nod. To be honest, she hadn't expected even the possibility of meeting with Humphrey Granger today.

"It's okay. It'll only take a minute. Would you like to keep an eye on Cosmo for me?" he asked, offering Colin the leash, since Nat had hold of the other one already.

"Uh, we can do that, sure," Colin replied. "He seems friendly enough."

"Oh, he's friendly!" Jon said with a chuckle. "A little too friendly sometimes." He crouched down to ruffle the dog's fur, his face very close to his. "Cosmo, be good for these nice people. I'll be right back," he told the dog, as if expecting him to understand and obey. He got his face licked for his trouble.

Nat chuckled gently, crouching down beside Coco to ruffle the beautiful spaniel's fur. "Made a new friend, huh?" she teased the chocolate dog affectionately.

"I won't be long!" Jon promised, wiping the doggie kisses from his face and he sprinted back up the stairs to the door. Cosmo barked once as his master departed before turning to inspect his new friend again.

"Well, that was interesting," Colin said. "He seems friendly enough," he said, though whether he was speaking of Jon or Cosmo was unclear - maybe both.

"I didn't know you were a film buff," Nat commented in her husband's direction, gently pushing the friendly Cosmo away before he could lick her face. One thing she did not allow was face licking.

Colin shrugged. "Not sure I'm a film buff, but I enjoy a good film now and then. Don't you?" he asked curiously, an almost embarrassed smile on his face.

Nat shrugged, shaking her head. "I haven't sat down and watched a movie since ....oh, since I was in training," she admitted reluctantly. "I am woefully out of touch."

"Swan Song is a great movie. A little sad, though. Do you prefer comedy or drama?" Colin asked curiously, as he crouched down beside the dogs to make sure they didn't tangle themselves up again.

"I don't know," she admitted. "I guess it would depend on my mood, wouldn't it' I don't even know if I can sit still for long enough to watch a movie without fidgeting and talking and driving you insane."

"We'll make it a short movie then, the first time," he said, offering a smile, mostly for her sake. It saddened him to think she had been too busy to enjoy such simple pleasures in so many years. Maybe now she'd have time to do all the things she never had time for before.

"Well, I've got a few months to get used to it," she considered in a mischievous tone. "Apparently kids watch a lot of movies."

Colin chuckled. "That's what I hear. Should I resolve myself to liking Disney movies?" he asked, with a grin.

"Tolerating them for the next decade, probably," she laughed back to him, tilting her head away as Cosmo tried to give her another face kiss. "You, my man, are far too familiar with ladies you don't know. You have no idea where I've been!"

"And you have no idea where he's been," Colin reminded her with a grin. Of course, the same could be said for Coco, but she was his dog, so he didn't mind her doggy kisses.

Nat chuckled, moving to straighten from her crouch and stretch. Now she knew she was pregnant, her tiredness and aches made a little more sense, though she had written them off previously as little more than the effects of her hard-wearing lifetime on her body catching up to her.

It wasn't too long before Jon returned to rescue them from Cosmo, who seemed happy to be getting acquainted with a new canine friend. He smiled as he approached, which was probably a good sign. "He's in the study. He said he'll see you. I'll show you inside," he told them.

Surprised, Nat glanced at Colin with a half-smile. "Should we leave Coco out here?" she asked Jon, not wanting to upset Old Man Granger if they could possibly help it. They wanted him to at least approve of them, after all.

"He doesn't mind dogs. He and Cosmo are great friends. Sometimes I wonder which one of us he really belongs to," Jon replied with a chuckle, though that wasn't much of an answer. "I guess it's up to you. You know your dog best. She's a cutie though, isn't she?" he asked, as he bent down to ruffle Coco's ears. "I don't mind watching her for a while for you."

Again, Nat glanced to Colin. He knew Coco best, after all. "Where do we go?" she asked Jon curiously. They might use the portal in the basement of the house, but that didn't mean she knew the layout of the house itself.

"Are you sure you don't mind?" Colin asked, uncertainly. It wasn't so much that he didn't trust the man with his dog as he didn't want to be a bother.

"Not at all!" Jon replied with a grin. "I was just taking Cosmo for a walk anyway," he said. "The study is on your right. Just go inside, through the dining room. The study is on your right. If you get lost, ask someone and they'll direct you," he said, alluding to the fact that his uncle wasn't alone in the house.

"Thank you." Nat relinquished the leash, snorting with laughter as Coco bounced in a circle before working out who was in charge of her now. "Be good, mischief."

"Be a good girl. We'll be right back," Colin told the dog, with a scritch behind an ear before reaching for Nat's hand to lead her up the porch stairs and inside the house.

Hand in hand with Colin, Nat walked into the big house of Maple Grove, feeling te first sense of unease in her stomach. She had no idea if Humphrey Granger would even consider their request, and until she had truly thought about it, she hadn't realized how much it would mean to her to live close to Steve and Lucy, away from Earth among friends. Through the dining room, to the study door, and she paused, swallowing as she looked up at Colin. "Well, here goes nothing."

She knocked, and a moment later, an elderly male voice called out, "Come in!"

Colin wanted to reassure her and tell her he was just an old man. Even if he rejected their request to live at Maple Grove, there had to be other places they could live nearby that weren't too far from her friends. But it was too late for that. The old man was inviting them inside. The worst that could happen was that he'd say no. Colin pushed open the door, allowing Nat to enter first, his hand at the small of her back.

Humphrey Granger was sitting in an armchair by a large bay window, glasses on his nose and a book in his lap, a walking cane resting against the windowseat within easy reach. He lowered the glasses from his face as they entered, raising a brow as he looked the couple over. "And you would be the Prescotts," he said. "Newly-weds, huh?"

"Yes, sir," Colin replied, well acquainted with authority figures and how to converse with a modicum of respect. "We were wed just last month," he informed the man as they stepped closer before coming to a halt a few feet away. "We're friends of Steve and Lucy Rogers," he explained. They were acquainted with the Storms, too, but to a lesser degree, so he didn't bother to mention it.

"So I hear." Humphrey considered them for a long moment, his eyes shrewd despite his age. Then he gestured to the seats around him. "Please, make yourselves comfortable. I'm Humphrey Granger, though I think you know that."

"Natasha," Nat introduced herself politely, easing down onto the window seat.

"Colin Prescott," her husband introduced himself, as well, leaning forward to offer a hand to the older gentleman. "It's a pleasure to meet you, sir," he added, waiting for the man to return his handshake before joining Nat on the window seat.

The hand that gripped his was gnarled with age, but still strong. Humphrey nodded to him. "Natasha and Colin," he repeated their names thoughtfully, setting his book and glasses to one side. "And what can I do for you?"

Colin exchanged a glance with Nat, presuming he'd be doing most of the talking here. "We know this is a very unusual request, but we'd like to move here - to Rhy'Din - and were wondering if it would be possible to lease a house here at Maple Grove," he said, point-blank, seeing no point in beating around the bush. "Steve and Lucy can attest to our trustworthiness. We do not wish to cause any trouble. To be honest, we are looking for a quiet, peaceful place to settle down and raise a family. A safe place."

Humphrey let him say his piece, nodding slowly to show he had heard and accepted what he heard. He leaned back in his armchair, considering them both, not wholly unaware that the Rogers' friend Natasha was one of Earth's Avengers and therefore extrapolating that the man she chose to marry must be exceptional in his own way.

"Well, now, that is a very good start," he told Colin. "I like blunt, plain speaking, and it reflects well on you that this is the first I've heard of it. I would have thought less of you if the way had been prepared by Steven or Olivia."

"They are good friends of ours," Colin explained. "Especially Steve and Lucy. I think they'd like us to live close by. They are practically family, at least to Nat." He glanced at Nat a moment before taking her hand and giving it a reassuring squeeze, almost as if silently trying to tell her everything would be okay. "To be honest, Mr. Granger, we just found out that we're expecting a child, and we think it's safer raising a family here than on Earth."

"And in your line of work, a safe place to raise a family is of the highest concern." Humphrey nodded once again, those shrewd eyes still looking them over as he made his assessment of the couple. "Maple Grove has been the private estate of my family for several centuries, Mr. Prescott. You are not family to me. How do you propose to overcome this?"

Colin frowned thoughtfully. He'd been considering this question already, before it had been asked, but then he'd been with Intelligence a long time and usually knew how people thought. Steve and Lucy were not family either; nor were Johnny and Liv, and yet, they had made Maple Grove their home. Colin didn't think pointing that out would help win their case though. "I'm sure we can reach some sort of agreement. Perhaps if I were in your employ," he suggested.

"There is a precedent for that," Humphrey conceded, enjoyment of the intriguing conversation flickering in his gaze. "What can you offer me" What are your skills, young man?"

Colin shrugged, as though he was trying to be modest. "I'm in Information Technology these days. Computers mostly, but I have a background in Military Intelligence," he said, letting Humphrey make of that what he would.

"The security systems that cover both this estate and the business properties in the city have been in need of an expert hand for a long time," Humphrey mused. "Though that is a conversation I would have to have with my granddaughter, who runs the company."

Natasha squeezed Colin's hand. "Sir ....if this is not a path we can tread, there is an alternative," she offered. "We could buy a lease on one of your properties here on the Grove, with the strict understanding that our family only has a claim to that property until the lease is up."

That was almost precisely how Colin had started his conversation with Humphrey, and so they had circled back around to the possibility of leasing a property once again, with the understanding that it might only be temporary. "Sir, neither of us has any family to speak of, except that of our friends. There is very little for us back on Earth. We would very much like to live here, but we don't know anyone but the Rogers' and the Storms' families. Perhaps we could sign a short lease, and at the end of that time, you can decide whether or not we will be permitted to stay. A test period, perhaps."

Humphrey leaned forward. "I have a counter-proposition for you," he suggested, that business head of his still as sharp as ever. "A short term lease of, say, two years, on a property of my choosing here on the Grove. I would not deny you the opportunity of finding work you consider fulfilling merely for the sake of securing a home for yourselves near the closest you have to family. If, at the end of those two years, you and we are happy with the arrangement, it can be discussed with a view to making it permanent. And I would still suggest you ply to Caroline Granger for an interview to overhaul our security systems."

Colin looked to Nat, as if for confirmation that she found Humphrey's proposition agreeable before he could go on.

It was just as well Nat had trained as a spy, able to keep her expression collected even as she met Colin's eye with an obvious glimmer of hope in her own. Those terms were more than she had expected from the old man, if she was honest, inclined now not to believe his reputation as a grumpy old curmudgeon.

Colin turned back to Humphrey with a small smile on his face, though he was not entirely ready to accept his offer just yet. "I believe that will be acceptable. There is only one thing - we would ask that the property you choose is large enough for a family. It doesn't have to be big or fancy. We just need enough room to raise a family. That's all."

Humphrey raised his brow again, leaning back in his chair. "Young man, I chose for them the majority of the inhabited houses on the Grove," he said archly. "Give me a little credit in knowing how much space is required for a young family."

"I appreciate that, sir," Colin said, taking the slight scolding without even batting an eye. He'd been scolded by far more intimidating people than Humphrey and survived it. He respected what the man had to say, not only because he did not have to agree to their request, but because the man had earned it and deserved it by sheer age and experience. "That is all we ask."

"Well, then ..." Humphrey nodded once more, and this time it was a decisive gesture. "Allow me a few days to speak with the relevant people and have an appropriate house made ready. We will contact you when everything is settled, to finalize the details of this lease of yours."

Nat felt a rush of relieved gratitude sweep through her. "Thank you, sir."

"Yes, thank you," Colin said moving to his feet to offer his hand to Humphrey a second time. "How can I reach your granddaughter?" he asked further, regarding Caroline and taking the suggestion of possible employment to heart, as well.

"Young man, she is the CEO of the GrangerGuild Conglomerate," Humphrey informed him in amusement. "But perhaps you should move into your new home before you start shopping for a job. You have ties to unbind on Earth while you wait for the paperwork."

"True," Colin replied, with a thoughtful frown. He didn't think they'd ever not be part of A.E.G.I.S., but that didn't mean they couldn't have lives here on Rhy'Din when they weren't busy with A.E.G.I.S. If Steve Rogers could manage it, he didn't see any reason why they couldn't, as well. "Well, I suppose that's all then," he said, looking to Nat, as if to make sure.

"I guess it is." Nat rose to stand beside Colin, not even trying to hide the gratitude in her eyes from the old man looking up at them. "Thank you, truly. It means a lot that you would trust us with a home on the Grove."

Humphrey smiled, nodding to them both. "I know your connections, and I know your former purpose," he said, speaking to both of them. "Such dedication deserves some reward."

"Thank you again. I promise you won't regret it," Colin said, mirroring Nat's smile of gratitude, not only because the man was giving them a chance to live here, close to their friends, but because he'd presumably recognized the sacrifices they'd made to keep Earth safe. It went without saying they'd try to do the same for Rhy'Din, if the need arose, especially where Maple Grove was concerned. It seemed the Grangers were about to welcome yet another pair of orphans into their fold.

In just a few days, when the contract was written and signed, they would have their own place on Maple Grove, chosen for them by an old man who shouldn't have given them the time of day. But then ....stranger things had happened. Maybe having a family of their own would make them a part of the wider Granger family, blood ties or no blood ties. Two years was a very good start.
