Stark Tower was huge, apparently not because it was supposed to be intimidating, but because Tony Stark wanted the best views of the city from his apartment at the very top. Lucy, suffice it to say, wasn't impressed. To her less than forgiving eye, it looked as though Howard Stark's only son - playboy, entrepreneur, genius, moron - had erected his very own phallic symbol, right in the heart of New York. And to think, this is my brother, she thought to herself as she joined the crowds that seemed to be constantly moving in and out of the building. Shouting out what a massive manhood he has with architecture. She smirked to herself; how on Earth could this man possibly be related to her quiet twin"

It took her a few minutes to find the main reception desk, but she was pleasantly surprised to find that the women working that desk were polite and sunny in their outlook, quickly ascertaining that, yes, she did have an appointment to see Ms Virginia Potts, though she was a little early. Noting the prominent mound of Lucy's pregnancy, one of the security men was called to escort her to the elevator and see her safely to Ms Potts' office, where apparently Ms Potts' P.A. was waiting for her. She was a little nonplussed by this, since she was only here because Pepper Potts had written to her with an invitation to come to the Tower. Lucy had assumed this was because Tony was either too proud to actually contact his half-sisters himself, or because he was dragging his heels about coming to any decision at all. By all accounts, Pepper ran his life for him; why shouldn't she mediate this, too"

The ride upward in the elevator was more than a little unnerving. For one thing, half of it was glass, letting her see a little too much of the ground floor that was dropping away at an alarming rate; for another, it seemed to be taking a minor ice age to reach the appropriate floor, giving her far too much time to think. She had a feeling Steve wasn't going to be very happy with her for doing this without him. He'd been staunchly on the side of getting Tony back in contact with his half-sisters, almost from the word go, but Lucy had chosen to come and meet Pepper on her own. That was probably going to hurt her husband's feelings, but at the same time ....what if Tony was there" She'd heard enough about him to know that he was bound to insult her at some point, and she really didn't want Steve to jeopardize his albeit uneasy friendship with Tony just because he couldn't keep a lid on it.

When, finally, they reached the right floor, she found herself escorted to a modest office suite, where a P.A. who was almost as efficient as Liv assured her that Ms Potts would be with her in just a few minutes. She was told to make herself comfortable, which she did, sinking gratefully into a couch that was set against a windowed wall. She loved being pregnant - far more than she'd ever expected to - but it was becoming a bit of a burden to keep on her feet these days. She couldn't believe she still had at least 6 more weeks before she was due. How much bigger was she going to get"

"Doctor Rogers" I'm Pepper Potts. I'm ....I'm very pleased to meet you."

Drawn out of her contemplation of her belly, Lucy looked up to find herself addressed by a tall blonde woman with kind eyes, a warm smile, and what had to be the most business like business suit she had ever seen. Momentarily, she glanced down at her comfortable pants and top, aware that she hadn't really dressed to the nines, but Lucy wasn't the sort to worry over what she was wearing. No doubt Liv would have dressed up, but Liv was infinitely more careful with her appearance than Lucy had ever been. She smiled, making the effort to get herself off the couch without grunting or groaning, and offered her hand to Pepper, who took it with a smile of her own, inviting her into the office beyond.

"I haven't had a chance to contact you before now, I'm afraid," Pepper apologized as she settled them both into comfortable seats away from the desk that dominated the room. "Congratulations on your marriage, again, and on the upcoming birth." There was an infinitesimal pause, and she suddenly blurted out, "Do you know what it is yet?"

Lucy couldn't help it; she laughed, already pleased with Pepper Potts. They'd met, albeit briefly, at her wedding, and she was very glad to note that her initial impression of the woman had not been wrong. "Thank you, Ms Potts," she smiled through her laughter, shifting her weight to be a little more comfortable in the chair she'd been ensconced in. "We do, actually. We're expecting a son in July."

"Captain Rogers must be very excited," was Pepper's answer to that, her own smile touched with laughter now. They were both nervous, it seemed, and that was coming out in wide smiles and just a hint of hysterical giggles.

"He is," Lucy assured her, making an effort to calm down. "Please, just call me Lucy. I'm still getting used to being Doctor Rogers. Oh, and I wanted to thank you - and Mr ....Tony - for arranging our honeymoon. It was beautiful."

Pepper seemed to relax as this offering was made, drawing in a deep breath of her own. "I'm very glad you enjoyed it," she replied warmly. "It was Tony's idea. And please, I'm Pepper. After all, we're ....well, I suppose you could say we're almost family."

Lucy tensed just a little; she hadn't been expecting the gentle segue into the meat of the conversation so soon. But she kept up her smile, glancing around a little awkwardly. "Should I offer you congratulations on your engagement, then?" she asked, still avoiding coming right out and saying what had actually brought the two women together.

Pepper's smile softened for a moment, her eyes flickering down to the ring on her left hand, but she didn't answer the question. It was something, it seemed, that was going to stay very private, as suited the CEO of Stark Industries. "Lucy ....I wanted to apologize for how long it's taken for you to have any kind of response to the package you sent to Tony," she said, uncomfortable but apparently blazing onward in spite of it. "The contents were shocking, especially to a man who has believed himself to be all alone in the world for decades."

"It hasn't been any easier for us." Lucy had to stop herself there. She could feel herself already growing annoyed with the implication that somehow the great Tony Stark's feelings on this matter were more important than those of herself and her sister. "We're not expecting anything, Pepper. We thought he had a right to know, that maybe he might like to meet what?s left of his family. But he needs to make a decision, soon. The silence is really hurting my sister, and I won't let that go on."

Pepper almost winced, evidently a good deal more empathetic than she liked to let on. "I can understand where you're coming from, Lucy, but Tony's a difficult personality to work around sometimes," she tried to explain. "Just because he isn't open to meeting you or your twin right now doesn't mean he won't change his mind a few months down the line. I'm finding it hard to predict in this case just which way he's going to go."

"He doesn't know I'm here, does he?" Lucy felt a tiny bit of hope she'd been trying not to nurture crumble away at the guilty expression on Pepper's face. "Pepper, you shouldn't feel as though you have to smooth the way for us. If he's going to be an arse, let him be an arse. I'm more than capable of handling myself in the face of moronic pride, and frankly, I would rather he took whatever it is out on me than did it anywhere near Olivia. And that's more for his protection than hers."

A faint frown appeared on Pepper's face as she absorbed this, not quite following. "I'm not sure I understand what you're implying there."

Lucy sighed. "My sister is very important to me," she explained, deciding to set things out plainly, unaware that the door behind her had opened to admit the one person who wasn't supposed to know she was there. "She's very sensitive, and very eager to meet Tony as our brother. We're all very protective of her - not just myself, but Steve, too, and her husband, Johnny Storm; even our great-aunt, Peggy Carter. If Tony upsets Liv, there will be a queue of people who will quite happily punch him, suit or no suit."

Before Pepper could answer, Tony walked in, seemingly having only caught the end of Lucy's little monologue.

"Punch who' Who's offering punches" To me" Well, it can't be in this suit, this is Armani - Potts, you promised me lunch -" There was barely a pause as he recognized Pepper's companion, his eyes widening with defensively comical dismay as he looked back to his lover. "Am I interrupting some kind of family reunion here, because I don't recall saying she could come here - nice bump, by the way, try not to give birth in the Tower, your insurance wouldn't cover the clean up - Pepper, lunch."

Lucy's eyes narrowed as she looked up at Tony Stark. This was supposed to be her older brother, the boy she and her sister had been left abandoned for to protect his interests and keep his mother from removing him from Howard's influence. She hadn't been sure about him when she'd first met the man, and this latest encounter wasn't sweetening her opinion at all. Pepper rose to her feet, noticing the storm clouds and hurrying to intercept them.

"I invited Lucy here," she told her lover pointedly. "I thought she deserved an explanation as to why you haven't answered her letter."

Tony looked at her with carefully constructed blankness, utterly ignoring the third person in the room. "What letter" Oh, that letter. You mean the letter and the files and the DNA results that Fury fabricated to try and get me to hand over the specs to the suit, that letter." He passed toward the desk, just barely glancing toward Lucy. There was almost a flicker of curiosity in his eyes, but that was not going to excuse him his rudeness.

Lucy pulled herself to her feet. "Okay, I think I've seen enough," she said, refusing to give him even the benefit of the doubt since he wasn't even going to afford her the courtesy he would give to a stranger. "Ms Potts, thank you for giving me the chance to see how clear the situation is. My sister and I won't be bothering Mr Stark again."

"Oh, you mean the sister's real?" Tony, it seemed, couldn't read a room to save his life. He just had to interject again. "I remember two of you at Captain Boring's funeral - wasn't the other one sorta quiet' Well, who wouldn't be quiet, dating the Human Firework. Thought maybe she might be a little defective -"

Pepper only just had time to let out a mild protest that failed to be coherent before Lucy struck. Tony Stark - genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist - turned at the sound of footsteps advancing, straight into the path of a small, determined fist. He staggered back, hit the edge of Pepper's desk, and thumped down onto his backside, holding his jaw and looking genuinely surprised. Lucy glared down at him, fury radiating from her in menacing waves.

"Don't you ever talk about my sister like that again," she warned him. "She is the best person I know, and you'd be f*cking lucky to know her, too. You don't want to know us" That's fine. Because there's no way in hell that you will ever be a good enough man to be able to call yourself my sister's big brother, and I'm going to make damn sure she knows that. And another thing?" She crouched down, not even slightly amused by the exagerrated way Tony shrank back against the desk. "My husband would like to be your friend. I suggest you make the effort not to be a complete wanker; he's the best friend you'll ever have."

Straightening, she swept her bag off the floor, and turned to Pepper, shaking the other woman's hand with as polite a smile as she could manage. "Thank you, Ms Potts. I apologize for any damage." With barely a backward glance, she stalked out of the room, steaming with anger at that short meeting. How dare he talk about Liv like that, about Steve like that' He was just a product of too much time and too much money, and Lucy was absolutely certain in that moment that she was never going to let Liv within a hundred yards of Tony Stark.

Behind her, the office was silent, both pairs of eyes staring toward the door in varying degrees of astonishment, admiration, and - in Pepper's case - definite amusement. There was a groan as Tony pulled himself onto his feet, still holding onto his cheek. He pointed toward the door, a forlornly quizzical expression on his face.

"Did I just get beat down by a tiny pregnant woman?"

Pepper turned to look at him, one brow rising to imply quite firmly that she was in complete agreement with what had just happened to him. She knew he was defensive, and that his mouth ran on auto-pilot when he was trying to think of something appropriate to say, but he'd gone just a little bit too far this time. Especially since she knew for a fact that he had heard Lucy's warning against saying or doing anything insulting toward her sister. "Yes, you did," she told him coolly. "Shall I clear an appointment for Captain Rogers to make use of sometime very soon?"

Tony was still staring at the door, a very faint twitch in his expression readable only to Pepper. He was impressed. Blinking out of his thoughts, he looked over at her. "Yes, you probably should," he agreed eventually. "But first ....lunch." He prodded the new rising bruise on his jaw and winced. "Ah ....and some ice."

((All failings in Pepper and Tony's characters are entirely my own fault, but this scene has been begging for months!))
