Topic: A Family BBQ

An unexpected family barbecue wasn't always a surprise on Maple Grove, but it didn't usually expand into these proportions. What had started as an idea for a little bonding time between cousins who were still a little awkward around each other had grown into a real little family gathering. With the barbecue itself still working its way up to cooking temperature, watched over by the men who had thus far arrived, Humphrey was in his element sat on his own patio, watching a small collection of children playing on the grass. Between Gabi's twins, and Jon and Vicki's pair, it was a wonder Cosmo wasn't fiercely defending his own tail. But the collie was delighted to have four children to play with, three of whom were walking ....sort of.

Jon was understandably nervous, but excited, too. When he'd woken up that morning, he had not been expecting his day would end up quite like this. He hoped Cian and especially Leilani wouldn't be overwhelmed by all the people, but they were as much a part of the family as anyone. Gabi's George seemed nice enough - a man from another century who had seemingly impeccable manners - a trait that had easily won over Humphrey's approval. At the moment, he was chatting amicably with Jon, while Vicki and Gabi swapped toddler tales.

Swapping toddler tales was one way of putting it. Another way was necking gin and tonic before husband and lover caught them. As Gordon confiscated Gabi's glass, he got pulled into an earnest debate with Vicki and Humphrey over whether or not a busy mother should be allowed to drink while operating toddler machinery, which in turn allowed Gabi to slip away to the barbecue. "Is the fire sufficiently fascinating, gentlemen?"

"Sufficiently is an understatement, Gabi," Jon remarked with a grin, coughing as he waved a waft of smoke away from his face. He was not much exactly a master at barbecuing, but that didn't stop him from trying.

George was no help either, as barbecuing was something that was still fairly new to him. "Is there a limit on drinks?" he asked, lowering his voice so he wasn't overheard by anyone but Gabi and Jon. He'd obviously noticed Gordon nabbing Gabi's drink.

Tucking herself under George's arm, Gabi smiled, shaking her head. "No, Dad's just got views about me drinking when I'm in charge of the boys, which is most of the time," she admitted softly. "That, and I don't drink much anyway." She eyed the barbecue thoughtfully. "Is it supposed to be quite that smoky?"

"No!" Jon exclaimed sounding like he was nearing a panic attack, waving a hand at the smoke and fiddling with the nob that controlled the flame. Why had Vicki put him in charge of this anyway'

Gordon to the rescue. They didn't call him Flash for nothing. "Problem, Jon?" he asked, inserting himself between the small group to save the meat before it was nothing but a charred lump of coal - or the fire brigade arrived, whichever came first. "You want to cook it slowly on a low flame. And there's nothing wrong with a drink or two, so long as you know your limits," he remarked, obviously having overheard what had been said.

"I'll be the ....what do they call it' Designated Driver?" George volunteered, raising a hand. He wasn't much of a drinker anyway.

Gabi blushed, a little ashamed to have been caught talking about drinking by her father, but Humphrey was the one who interrupted. "You can walk back," the Old Man declared with a chuckle, toasting them with his own glass of martini. "Speaking of designated anyones ....aren't we expecting someone else?"

"A couple of someone elses, actually, Humph," Vicki reminded him with a warm smile, one hand reaching out to catch Jake as he tripped over his feet in his hurry to show Grampa Hump'y the spider he'd found.

"The Designated Walker, then," George corrected himself with the ghost of a smirk. The man had obviously become much more comfortable around the Grangers the last few months.

Jon looked relieved to have been rescued by Gordon, and clapped the older man on the shoulder. "I think you just found your calling," he told him with a grin.

"I knew I'd been invited for something!" Gordon replied with a chuckle. He really didn't mind - he wanted dinner to be edible, after all. "I hear Dom is seeing someone again?" he asked, to no one in particular.

"Two someones, if you count her daughter," Vicki offered, and promptly burst out laughing at the horrified gasp that erupted from Gabrielle on hearing this. "No, no, no, not like that," the redhead hurried to clarify, over Humphrey's loud guffaws, rolling her eyes as a small voice spoke up behind her.

"Um ....are we interrupting anything?" Only one person could put that amount of innocent confusion into a single sentence - the unassuming, unsuspecting guests of honor had arrived.

"No, of course not! We've been waiting for you to arrive!" Gordon said, a welcoming smile on his face for the young woman who had very quickly found her way to his heart and become like a second daughter. He nudged Jon with an elbow and whispered, "Go say hello."

Jon cleared his throat, that nervousness creeping back up on him again. "Right," he muttered before stepping forward to greet the unsuspecting guests of honor. He hesitated a moment before leaning close to touch a kiss to Leilani's cheek. She looked absolutely lovely, though he didn't say so. He'd leave that to Miranda. "Hello, Leilani. I'm so glad you could make it."

Though a few years among society had rubbed the edge off Leilani's shyness, it was still there in the way she held tight to Cian's hand, and the way she waited nervously to be greeted before her smile blossomed into view. Gordon and Gabi were given a full sight of that smile before Leilani found herself being kissed by Jon. Slightly bemused, she tilted her head as she looked up at Cian's cousin. "We haven't been invited to a ..." The unfamiliar word caught on her lips as she glanced at Cian curiously. "A queuing bee? One of these, for a long time. Your young are very active, Jonathan."

Near Jon, Vicki chuckled. "Our young are getting bigger by the day."

"Not as active as Gabi's boys," Jon replied with a chuckle.

"Barbecue," Cian whispered beside her, with a warm but slightly anxious smile, well aware of the awkwardness between himself and his cousin.

Jon made the first move, reaching to take Cian's hand and greet him properly. "Nice to see you, Cian. It's been too long." The last time they'd have a conversation that consisted of more than a few words was Frank's funeral.

"Yeah, it has," Cian replied, his smile warming as he took the other man's hand in a firm grip. "We haven't been around as much as we'd like," he explained. It was pretty common knowledge that he and Leilani were often off adventuring somewhere, though no one quite seemed to know where.

"Bar-be-cue." Leilani repeated the word a couple of times, jumping as a small sticky hand inserted itself into hers to pull her attention to Jake on Humphrey's lap. She giggled as she was pulled away to say hello to one of her nephews and the Old Man, unfortunately abandoning Cian to his cousin.

All was well, however, since Gabi chose that moment to hike Theo off the grass and come to greet her brother herself. "Oh, pish, you're just too busy being all loved up," she accused him fondly, secure in the knowledge that she was pretty loved up herself. "Look at you. You practically dribble every time you look at her."

"I'm not dribbling!" Cian laughed, swiping at his mouth to make sure. He had changed since Jon had seen him last. His hair was shorter - a lot shorter - and he was clean-shaven, but most importantly, he looked both healthy and happy, and that, more than anything else, gave Jon hope. The actor turned a little bit shy as Gabi joined them, knowing how close the siblings were and feeling a little like the odd man out. "We've been busy!" Cian argued further. Busy traveling and having adventures and gathering treasures the likes of which only Dom would appreciate. Maybe someday, he'd tell them all about it, but for now it was his and Leilani's little secret.

"Well, I'm glad you could make it," Jon said, getting ready to excuse himself before things got more awkward.

"Busy with adventures and all sorts," Gabi agreed with her brother. "Here, have a nephew." She handed Theo into Cian's arms. "I'm going to find out if there is any fish to grill before 'Lani asks this time." She patted Jon's arm, denying him his own excuse to escape as Leilani moved to rejoin them, a small jammy handprint on her hip.

"What are you doing with your acting, Jon?" she asked, as though reading off a script in her mind. Social interactions were still a little difficult for her.

"Vicki made sure of that already, Gabs," Jon assured her, but she was already patting his arm and moving off, leaving him there alone with Cian once again, but only until Leilani joined them. "My acting?" he asked, taken a little off guard. "Oh, we're doing Shakespeare in a few days. A Midsummer Night's Dream ....I don't supposed you've ever heard of it." He frowned for a moment as he mentally searched for common ground. "It's about fairies and magic and uh ....It's hard to explain. You should come out and see it. I think you'd enjoy it." If she understood it, that was, but she had Cian for that.

"At the Shanachie, right?" Cian asked. He hadn't been to one of Jon's plays since they were boys. "I think we'd like that, don't you, Lani?" he asked, hooking an arm around hers.

"Was it not midsummer last month?" As much as she tried to integrate with the world around her, Leilani had a lifetime of isolation to overcome, and had a tendency to take things very much at face value. "I know a little about magic. And your acting is ..." She considered it for a moment. "What is acting" And what is a shanachie?" Sea green eyes flickered between the two men, much to the amusement of Vicki nearby, who was blatantly eavesdropping while sharing a plate of salad with Emily and Ben.

That could have gone one of several ways, but Jon caught his wife's eyes a moment before turning back with a smile. "Tell you what, you have Cian bring you by the theater one night, and I'll give you both a backstage tour, complete with front row seats. Sound like a deal?" he asked, looking from one to the other.

"Deal," Cian replied with a grin. Whether it was because he wanted to please his cousin or because he thought it might be fun was uncertain, but he seemed agreeable enough.

"Deal," Leilani agreed, and then demonstrated that she and Cian had visited at least one rather disreputable place in the not so distant past. She spat into her hand and held it out, obviously expecting Jon to shake it in order to seal the deal.

There was a splutter from where Vicki was sitting, accompanied by the not so subtle sound of Emily hitting her mother repeatedly on the back to the tune of, "No choke!"

"Uh ..." Jon arched a brow as he looked to Leilani's hand, knowing she was full of good intentions, but Cian rescued him before things went too far.

"It's okay, Lani. You don't have to spit into your hand to make a deal here. We're with family," he reminded her gently. It wasn't that Jon minded so much as it was just a little unexpected.

"Um, if you two would excuse me, I need to check with the cook a moment." And with that, he was disappeared to check on the fish, leaving the guests of honor momentarily alone.

"Was it something I said?" Cian asked aloud, to no one in particular.

"Oh." Without thinking, Leilani wiped her hand on her dress as Jon made his escape, leaving Vicki to field the possible upset in his wake.

"No, it wasn't anything anyone said or did," she promised Cian with a smile, handing Emily a tomato to make her stop slapping her mother on the back. "He's nervous around you, but he'll get over it. You guys just need to spend time together."

At least he was polite enough to excuse himself and not to mention that Leilani was wearing a grimy handprint on her hip. "Why's he nervous?" Cian asked, turning with Leilani to face Vicki. "I'm still the same old Cian I've always been."

"But he's not the same Jon you've always known," the redhead pointed out, snorting with laughter as Ben rose onto his wobbly feet to present Leilani and Cian with a small piece of lettuce each. As the Syreni knelt down to thank the little boy and ask him where it came from, Vicki smiled gently at Cian. "He's scared you're never going to forgive him for the things he doesn't remember doing, Cian, that's all."

Cian offered the small boy a princely bow and reverently took the piece of lettuce from him. "Why, thank you ....Benjamin, isn't it?" he asked before straightening. Cian watched as Leilani did the same, frowning thoughtfully over at Vicki. "Forgive him for what? None of that was Jon's fault. I forgave him a long time ago," Cian said, looking a little flabbergasted.

"Forgive me for intruding," George broke in, a glass of something clear and bubbly in his hand. "If I understand correctly, Jon has amnesia?"

"He's still afraid people are judging him on who he was, not who he is," Vicki tried to explain, rising to her feet as Leilani was swamped by all four small children. The non-parent had made the unwise choice of kneeling down, and was therefore fair game. Vicki glanced up as George joined them, sparing a flicker toward Jon briefly before she answered. "He was shot in the head, about five years ago. Almost complete amnesia from that moment."

George winced at the news of that. Gabi had told him some of the family's history, but not all of it. "Five years and he doesn't recall anything at all? We used to see this sort of thing in the war," he explained further. The Great War, he meant, though only Cian might know that. "Trauma to the brain. I'm not a specialist in that area, but if he hasn't recovered those memories by now, it's likely he never will."

Vicki hesitated briefly, knowing that Jon hadn't really shared his personal adventures into recovering his memory with his family. "He ....recovered some of them, temporarily, a few months afterward," she told George, aware that the doctor wouldn't be able to keep himself from asking further anyway. "With the help of vampires, whom we eventually had to deal with. He hasn't remembered anything else since before he was shot, though." Her eyes turned to Cian gently. "It's his biggest concern, that people he loves, people he trusts, still can't see past the stupid things he did when he was younger. He's not the man he was, and I don't think he's quite brave enough to trust everyone to take him on face value."

"Good lord!" George exclaimed, quietly enough that his voice didn't travel much farther than the small group of three. He'd lived in Rhy'Din long enough to know that vampires - and other such things - were real enough and extremely dangerous. He had to take a minute to process that - first the man had been shot somehow - God only knew why - and then he been tangled up vampires. It was a wonder he was still sane, much less amnesiac. The trauma alone could have caused it, without the bullet.

Cian seemed to take it a lot better than George, a strained smile on his face as he touched Vicki's arm to reassure her. "I'm sorry he had to go through all that. I wish I'd have known." Cian sighed, tossing a brief glance toward Jon, which thankfully went unnoticed by the other man. "No one knows this but Gabi, but ....Frank wasn't exactly right in his head. Most of the things Jon blames himself for were Frank's doing. He really has nothing to be sorry about."

Vicki couldn't help teasing George a little further, though, her personal streak of mischief perfectly calculated to appeal to almost everyone. "Don't get me started on the ghoul," she told him with a wink, gentling her expression as she looked to Cian once again. "I didn't know until after he'd dealt with it. That was how he met Shen Lei and Rufus, actually, long before Miranda revealed Bethany and got married." She paused, letting Cian offer her a small insight. "I see. Do you want me to tell him that, or would you rather do it yourself?"

"Ghoul," George echoed softly, realizing there was a lot more to this story than even Vicki was letting on and suddenly feeling like he was intruding. "Oh, no, Theo ....We don't eat frogs!" he exclaimed, catching sight of the boys getting into trouble again, or pretending to.

"No, I ..." Cian frowned again, as he looked over at his cousin, sympathizing with the pain and guilt he must be feeling for something that wasn't his fault. He'd felt that way himself for a long time before the truth was made clear. "I think I should tell him myself."

Vicki couldn't help laughing at the sight of Doctor George and Gabi chasing around after the twins, trying to get whatever it was they had caught off them. "I have no idea how your sister managed those two by herself for so long," she said admiringly, gently squeezing his hand. "Family gathering. Let's keep it light, shall we?" And because she could not resist dropping a bomb when she had one all prepared ...."Why aren't you married yet?"

"Mmm," he murmured thoughtfully, before turning back to her with a look of shock on his face as she dropped that bomb on him. "Married?" he echoed. "What makes you think that we're not?" he asked, just a little defensively. He and Leilani had spoken their vows to each other privately and with no one to witness but the sea and the sky. Neither of them had thought anything more was necessary, but that was before he'd brought her to Rhy'Din.

"Because Gabi didn't get to stand up with you," Vicki said, as though this was perfectly obvious. She shrugged. "I'm not judging you, Cian. It's just that, if you're going to settle, or at least stay on Rhy'Din for long periods, maybe it's time to give Leilani your surname, as well as everything else you've shared with her. A thought to ponder, perhaps."

Thankfully for Vicki, at this point a wild yell went up from the woods behind the garden, and Dom came lumbering into view, one small girls over his shoulder, growling like a particularly badly dressed bear.

There was that thoughtful look on his face again, as though this was something he hadn't really considered before, but before he had a chance to respond, they were both turning to find Dom arriving with a small giggling girl over his shoulder and a strikingly attractive woman in tow. "Who is that?" he asked curiously, distracted from his conversation with Vicki.

"That ....is Elle," Vicki told him, waving to the woman as she came into sight behind Dom. "And the small person on Dom's shoulder is her daughter, Daisy." She watched as Dom deposited Daisy on the ground, and promptly went down under Cosmo's momentum, much to the amusement of the children. "I think he may ask her to marry him soon. There's something there that is as special as what any of us have."

"I didn't know Dom was seeing anyone," Cian mused quietly, not the first to remark on it that evening. Where had he been that he'd missed all this" Hiding under a rock" There was that word "marry" again, and Cian swung a glance back at Vicki with an arched brow. "What do you want me to do' Get down on one knee in the middle of a barbecue?" he asked, doubtfully. "She doesn't even know what marriage is all about."

"Well, he is a registrar," she pointed out with a faint smile. "And all Leilani really needs to know is that it would make your bond, your mating, something multiple worlds and multiple cultures would understand at a glance. It wouldn't change anything, would it?"

Cian smirked a little, eying her suspiciously. "Did you set this all up in hopes we'd get married today?" he asked, gesturing with the wave of a hand to their surroundings and all the people gathered around. Everyone he cared about was there in attendance and then some. He knew Vicki well enough to know he wouldn't put it past her.

Innocent was something Vicki could do surprisingly well, when she set her mind to it. Admittedly, this time it lasted about as long as it took for her to meet Cian's eyes before she started laughing. "God, I used to be so much better at subterfuge," she complained cheerfully. "But yes ....if you want to do it, we can do it. Once Miranda gets here, though, or she'll strangle me with her twinset and pearls, or whatever she's wearing today."

Cian exhaled a huff of breath and rolled his eyes. "All right, but will you let me talk to her first before you all spring it on her?" he asked, referring to the bride in question, who had no idea what was going on right under her nose.

"Of course I'm not going to drop it on her," the redhead scoffed. "I tease, but I'm not mean. Besides, you should really get the opportunity of asking her for yourself. You being the groom, and all." She flashed him a grin, turning away to greet Elle with a warm hug. It remained to be seen whether or not the little gathering was going to become a wedding breakfast.

Cian didn't seem to know quite what to do with that except draw Leilani aside and ask her, but that would likely take a little explaining. He took advantage of the distraction to slip away and find his mate and lover before she found out before he had a chance to explain.

"Vicki," Elle greeted the other woman, who she was starting to think of as a sister. They were both from England, after all, and had Granger men in common, among other things. "Thank you so much for inviting us. I thought Dom was going to go crazy playing Snakes and Ladders with Daisy for the fifth time today."

"Oh, I think you're going to enjoy more than just a barbecue and a break from interminable board games," Vicki chuckled to Elle. She liked the other woman, glad that Elle had decided to stay on Rhy'Din, not just for Dom's sake. "We're just waiting on Miranda and Rufus now, but I do believe we may have a wedding about to happen. If Cian can explain to Leilani what that means. It's touch and go." She snickered. "Have you met Gabi and George yet?"

"A wedding!" Elle exclaimed, both surprised and delighted. "It isn't me, is it' Because he hasn't popped the question yet." Oh, yes, she knew Vicki very well by now. She nodded her understanding, looking just a little relieved to find it wasn't about her and Dominic, after all. If and when she did marry him, she wanted enough advance notice to be able to dress the part, appreciating fashion almost as much as Miranda did. "That sounds ominous," she said with a teasing smirk. "No, I don't think I have," she replied to her question.

"Well, Leilani's not entirely human," the redhead explained to her quietly, drawing her friend over to the table to pour her a drink. "And she spent the first twenty or so years of her life in almost complete isolation. She has difficulty understanding social customs sometimes." Handing Elle a glass of sparkling pink something, Vicki flashed her a warm grin. "Gabi is Cian's sister, Gordon's daughter, and Miranda's niece," she explained, orientating Elle to this particular branch of the family. "The twin boys are hers, and the tall cool blond chasing after them with a wipe in each hand is her boyfriend, George."

Elle was a pretty cool cat herself, and she took this all in with her usual grace, looking around and putting names to faces, gaze lingering a moment on the tall cool blond. "Mmm, he is rather attractive, isn't he?" she remarked appreciatively, though she was more than happy with the one she'd snagged. "Are there any men on Rhy'Din who aren't attractive?" she asked with a grin, girlfriend to girlfriend.

Vicki snorted into her own glass, laughing as she came up for air. "Between you and me, I think Humphrey's responsible for all the lookers in the Granger family," she intimated impishly. "Look at him. Twiddiddilly umpty whatever, and he's a fox."

"A silver fox," Elle agreed with a conspiratorial wink and a girlish grin. Her heart belonged to Dom, but that didn't mean she couldn't still admire a good-looking man, like a fine piece of art. She took the glass from her, nudging her arm gently. "Your Jon is looking rather dashing today."

"Oh, he's on good form today." And yes, Vicki knew exactly what Elle would take away from that little comment. They were surprisingly similar; it was probably the English thing. "Dom seems overly energetic, I have to admit," she added, laughing as the man in question emerged from the pile of children and dog to grab Daisy and tickle her before she could get away. "Shame we got Cosmo done, really ....I would pay good money to see Dom humped by a hyperactive collie."

"Mmm," she murmured appreciatively, taking a sip of whatever the pink bubbly stuff in her glass was. "It's good to see him so happy, isn't it?" she said, glancing toward the man in question. "And I take full credit," she added, breaking into almost bawdy laughter at Vicki's remark, even at Dom's expense. "Now that would be something to see." All eyes turned toward the two women at Elle's laughter, but she didn't seem to notice.

"It is very good to see him so happy," Vicki agreed, toasting the curious with a wink and a grin. Pretty much everyone knew what Vicki's humor was like. "And you. No more moping and worrying about protecting him, I take it' Since his rather epic shagathon on your first date."

"Oh, I think I'll always worry a little. Isn't that what couples do?" she asked, knowing good and well that Vicki did her fair share of worrying. "But we both have so much to be thankful for. I've never been so happy really," she said, smiling softly as her gaze fell on the eldest of the Granger cousins.

"Well, I, for one, am very glad to hear that," the redhead smiled, nudging her friend warmly. "C'mon, come and meet the shyer end of the family while the monsters are giving each other indigestion." She gestured to Gabi, catching the woman's attention away from George for a moment, and laughed as the blond woman headed toward them, one twin around each leg. "I honestly have no idea how she does it."

"Good lord," Elle remarked as Gabi started their way, one twin wrapped around each leg. "They don't run in the family, do they?" she asked, though she and Dom were a long way off from that discussion.

"Not that I'm aware of in any other branch but theirs," Vicki assured her with a faint smile. "Miranda's daughter had twins, too, but same branch of the family. Besides, Dom's mum had two girls and a boy, all separately. I think you're safe. Need a hand there, Gabs?"

Gabrielle looked down at her overly heavy shin braces thoughtfully. "I'm not sure," she said consideringly. "It all depends which one you want to hold while I force him to eat ....potato salad!" With a squeal, both boys let go and scrambled away to hide with George, laughing and falling over each other all the way.

Elle laughed at the boy's antics. "That's one way to chase them off," she observed. "All I have to do is mention the word peas, and Daisy will hide in her room for hours." She offered the blond a hand, along with a friendly smile. "I'm Elle. I come with that one," she said, gesturing toward Dominic with her glass.

"Sometimes I just need ten minutes, and potato salad does the trick," Gabi smiled, taking Elle's hand warmly. "I'm Gabi. Oh! You're with ....gotcha." The look flickered to Vicki proved who was gossip central in the Grangers at the moment, but Gabi didn't say anything to get her in trouble. "Welcome to the family, I suppose. Or should I wait until he proposes to say that?"

"It's just a matter of time, I think," Elle said with a hopeful smile. "He won't admit it, but I think he's a little scared." And rightfully so, since he'd tragically lost his wife only a few short years ago. "Perhaps I should ask him first. What do you think he would say if I got down on one knee?" she teased, steering them away from a subject that could get a little too emotional.

"Well, he's not as proper as George," Vicki drawled, "so you probably won't get "Good lord, woman, get up before you ruin your stockings!" although he might just laugh and ignore the question."

Gabi leveled an accusing smile onto the redhead. "George isn't that proper," she defended her doctor fiercely. "I nearly have him convinced to move in, I'll have you know."

"How long have you been together?" Elle asked, not knowing very much about Gabi and her tall cool blond. "I think it took Dom a few weeks," she said, though that wasn't entirely true. It had taken a while before the cottage was ready for them, but they'd been seeing so much of each other before that, they were practically living together.

Blushing at the memory of quite how fast everything had moved from a chance encounter in the hospital cafeteria, Gabi smiled her soft little smile, her eyes seeking out George briefly. "We've been together about two months," she admitted quietly, looking back to the others she was with. "I never thought I'd meet anyone who'd be prepared to take the boys on."

"But it seems like forever, doesn't it?" Elle asked, eyes sparkling with a happiness of her own. It had only been a few short months since she'd met Dom, but it seemed like she'd been waiting for him all her life. "You just know when it's meant to be, don't you?" she asked, her own gaze drifting past George - as lovely to admire as he was - to the man who had stolen her heart, who was, at the moment, playing as merrily as any child with Cosmo and the children. "He's perfect," she muttered quietly to herself, obviously more than a little smitten herself.

"Elle and Dom, sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G ..." There was faint "oof? as Gabi thumped Vicki's arm, putting a halt to the teasing schoolyard humor.

Across the grass, Dom looked up, seemingly aware of when the woman he loved was watching him, and flashed his charming rogue's smile for his Belle. The view was only slightly marred by the fact that he was holding Emily and Theo upside down by their ankles at the time.

Elle seemed unruffled by her friend's teasing, and only beamed a smile back at Dom that was warm with love and affection. "I'd sit in a tree and kiss him all day long if I could," she remarked, hoping he didn't become so distracted by her smile that he dropped either child. "He needs one of his own someday, don't you think?" she found herself musing, almost surprising herself with the statement. As much as they both adored Daisy, she thought the finest gift she could ever give him was a son of his own ....someday.

"Hold off a year, and we can play Russian roulette with our wombs together," Vicki suggested with a snicker, including Gabi in that suggestion, despite the surprise on the quieter Granger's face. "What' The boys'll be three by then, using the toilet by themselves, sleeping in big boy beds. Perfect time to provide them with a new toy."

"You want to give that tall, cool blond a child of his own someday, don't you?" Elle joined in on the good-natured needling just a little. She didn't say as much, but she thought if Gabi didn't, someone else would. He was lovely to look at and seemed a perfect gentleman, though she still preferred her own man. "He's English, isn't he?" she asked, as observant as a thief in a jewelry store.

"Of course I do," Gabi protested, glancing back and forth between the two women with something quite close to alarm. "I just ....the boys need to be ready, and there are a lot of changes happening for them. And being pregnant wasn't exactly fun for me last time."

Vicki smiled gently. "All right, I'll back off," she conceded, glancing around the garden. "Seriously, how long does it take to pack up a man and a newborn?"

Elle smiled just as warmly, though her eyes danced with amusement and very little remorse. "Stranger things have been known to happen," she said, without an apology. Whether any of them had anymore children remained to be seen; what was important was that they were happy. "I'm not sure I remember how to be pregnant," she said with a laugh, though it would probably make Gabi gasp in shock to know what Elle had suffered these last few years. She had put it behind her, for the most part, trusting in Dom to keep her and her daughter safe.

"I don't know how to be normally pregnant," Gabi shrugged. "Twins is an experience."

Vicki gently squeezed an arm around Gabi's shoulders, grinning. "And one you survived with amazing aplomb. But honestly ....where is your aunt?"

Gabi laughed, rolling her eyes. "Well, it's not just packing them up, is it?" she pointed out impishly. "It's making sure they're dressed properly, and the bag is packed properly, and doing the toilet check, and then double checking everything, and then realizing that Ro has filled her diaper while you were finding your keys."

Elle might have said more, but she suddenly felt a little like the outsider who was trying too hard to fit in. Though she felt fairly comfortable with Vicki, she hardly knew Gabi and didn't want to put the young woman off. She was just about to excuse herself quietly when a slightly frantic woman's voice was heard from behind them.

"It's all right! We're here! Better late than never!" It seemed Miranda and Rufus had finally arrived.

"It's about time!" Humphrey called as the last of the little party arrived.

Rufus trailed along in Miranda's wake, loaded down with the diaper bag and currently empty car seat, since Ro was tucked close in a sling against his chest. He looked exhausted, but weirdly, it seemed to suit him.

Vicki caught Elle's hand to offer a reassuring squeeze, letting the other woman steal away if she wanted to. It'd take time, but eventually, Elle would be as comfortable with the Grangers as Vicki had become.

Miranda was dressed in a colorful sundress that covered her legs but bared her arms - part of a collection of summer-wear she had designed herself - and though she was looking a little tired and harried, she was her usual radiant self. She stopped dead in her tracks, however, eyes widening, when she spied all the Grangers in attendance - every last one of Gordon's branch of the family all gathered together in one place, along with a few noted extras. She made a mental count. "Is there something going on that I don't know about?" she asked, wondering if they'd all gathered together on account of Ro. It never occurred to her that this might be about Cian and Leilani, though Jon had mentioned they'd be in attendance.

"Since when is there ever something going on that you don't know about?" Dom asked her, emerging from the attack of the children to bend down and lift Miranda off her feet in a bear hug, purely for the fun of knowing that she hated it when he did that unexpectedly. And his grin told everyone watching he knew exactly what he was doing, too.

"Since ..." Miranda broke off, not wanting to spoil everyone's fun with the mention of Lei's death, which was still a little too fresh, both of them still raw with shock and grief. "Since I've become a mother ....again," she replied, squealing as Dom lifted her off her feet, but it did get a smile out of her, rewarding him with a playful swat. "Stop that, Dominic. I can still paddle your ass." Though she never really had. "Where is that lovely young woman of yours?" she asked, brushing some imaginary lint from his shoulder. "Oh, Elle! Can you please call your bear of a man off before he crushes my ribs?"

"You love me really," was Dom's cheeky answer to that, smooshing a kiss against Miranda's cheek before he let her go to reclaim his own lovely lady with a softer kiss and a smile.

"No rib crushing," Rufus agreed with a wry smirk. "Otherwise you and I will be swapping houses while she heals." Setting the bag and car seat down, he reached out a hand to greet Gordon and Humphrey, the other still on Ro's back.

Miranda grinned at Dom's open display of affection. She thought he'd been alone far too long and was glad to see he was finally moving on after the tragedy of Gwen's death. Of all her cousins, there was a special place in her heart for Dom. "Has he popped the question yet?" she asked, with a conspiratorial wink at Elle. Only Miranda would be so bold.

Elle laughed, an arm going possessively around Dom's waist. "No, not yet, but I'm sure it will happen sooner or later." "Well, what are you waiting for" Life is too short! Get to it already!" she scolded them both with a grin before giving Dom's ass a healthy whack.

The biggest Granger in the gathering barely even flinched at the healthy smack to his rear end, raising a brow as he looked down at Miranda. "Did you want to script it and do the kneeling thing for me?" he asked her with that charming smile of his. "I can do romance, you know. When I concentrate. Can't I?" This was directed, surprisingly, not at Elle, but at Daisy, who was Dom's partner in crime when it came to romancing her mother.

"Don't tempt me," Miranda replied, with a grin, before turning her attention to Dom's young accomplice. "Hello, Daisy darling. Would you like to meet Ro?" she asked, of the tiny bundle Rufus was lugging around. She didn't wait for an answer, but took the little girl's hand and dragged her off to meet the latest and youngest addition to the Granger clan.

"Hmm, she's spunky," Elle remarked, as she watched Miranda take charge of her daughter. "I like her," she said, smiling up at Dom.

"She's Miranda," Dom shrugged, chuckling as Daisy was dragged almost bodily away to help cajole Rufus into letting Ro out of his arms' reach for the first time in two months. "Fashion designer extraordinaire, I'm told. She's done a few wedding dresses in her time, too." He flashed Elle a grin, leaning down to kiss her affectionately. "You okay' Not too intimidated?"

"Yes, I've heard of her," Elle said, turning into his embrace, unafraid of his family seeing the open display of affection between them. "I'm fine, darling," she assured him. It would take time to get to know them all and to feel comfortable, but they seemed a friendly enough lot and no one had made her feel unwelcome. "How are you? Not feeling pressured into popping the big question, are you? I'm perfectly happy to live in sin with you for as long as you like, you know."

"Oh, I have my own timetable, don't you worry," he assured her, easing both arms about her waist as he lowered his forehead to hers. "We're sticking to it. The whole point is for you to be surprised, after all, otherwise the question doesn't really pop." He shared his grin with her again, nose to nose. "You and Vicki seem to be getting along well."

She was only too happy to remain in his arms as long as he'd let her, forehead to forehead, nose to nose, lips to lips - whatever he preferred. She knew his heart was still healing, and she only wanted to make him happy. "I'll try to look surprised when it does happen then," she told him, grinning up at him. Not if, but when. "Vicki and I are both English, darling. We understand each other."

"You both have a very dirty laugh when you're together, I know that much," he teased her, wrapping his arms about her to pull her in close as he looked around at the family gathering. "Anyone here you haven't been introduced to yet' Anyone over four feet tall, that is?"

"Mmm, yes ..." she replied, seemingly content to stay right there in his arms as long as he'd have to. "But there's no rush." She lifted her chin to him and pressed a tender kiss to his lips, while her fingers slid up against his back, that kiss lighting a fire in her heart she hoped would never die.

But even the most tender kiss in the world could not keep Vicki's voice from intruding. "Now, Rufus ....I'll make you a deal. If you let me cuddle Ro, I won't put hot chili sauce into everything you eat today. How's that?"

Dom snorted with laughter, breaking the kiss to look over and see how that was going to be resolved.

Elle laughed at the interplay going on between the family members, only too happy to linger in Dom's arms as long as she could.

"Rufus," Miranda was saying, trying very hard to be patient with her husband. It was like trying to reason with a child sometimes. "For God's sake, she won't break. The woman has had two children without incident. You've had her all day. Take a break."

Rufus was looking a little cornered, one hand still protectively holding Ro against his chest in her sling as Vicki and Miranda worked on him. He might well have been able to defend himself and the baby against all kinds of demons, but he didn't stand a chance against the women of the family, and everyone knew it. "Oh, all right," he gave in with bad grace, sighing as Vicki's expert hands were right there to lift Ro out and tuck the newborn against her shoulder. "I told you it was a woman thing," he complained to Miranda, gesturing to how easily Ro settled as Vicki turned toward Humphrey and Jon. "She never settles that fast for me."

"Can I see?" a small voice asked from lower to the ground, where Daisy was waiting patiently for someone - anyone, really - to introduce her to the littlest Granger, pouting a little as Vicki turned away.

"That's because she senses your nervousness," Miranda explained to her husband with an affectionate pat against his cheek. "You just need to relax a little bit. No one is going to hurt her today, Rufio. Trust me."

"Oh! Of course, sweetie, I completely forgot," Vicki laughed, turning back almost immediately to crouch down and lower Ro into the crook of her arm so that Daisy - and the other children - could get a look at the newest member of the family. "I'm a forgetful old silly some days."

Despite his concern, Rufus found himself smiling as he watched this, a little relieved to have given in and let someone other than Miranda hold the tiny girl. He undid the sling, catching his wife's hand to kiss her knuckles. "I think I may indulge in a beer for once," he confessed to her. "Maybe you should wear it in your bra."

"I would, dear, if I were wearing one," Miranda remarked back at Rufus with a teasing sparkle in her eyes. Touche. He really should know better than to try to outsmart his wife. "Go have your beer and relax. I'm sure you and Jon could swap your adventures with diapers." She couldn't help but snicker a little at her own sense of humor.

Nearby, Daisy's eyes grew wide as she finally met the new addition to the family. "She's so tiny," she said in a hushed whisper of wonder, even as the other children gathered around. She was the eldest of them here today and would later help with the wrangling and entertainment.

"I love you," was Rufus' heartfelt response to Miranda's suggestion, dragging himself off to find a drink and a married man to commiserate with over lack of sleep and diaper duty.

Vicki, meanwhile, had one hand to keep her own youngest from poking at the baby in her arm while she smiled at Daisy. "This is Ro," she told the little girl, since the four toddlers couldn't care less. "She's only two months old, but she's already much bigger than she was when she was born."

"She's very pretty," Daisy cooed, looking to Vicki with apprehensive eyes. "Can I touch her?" she asked, lifting a hand in eager anticipation. At least, she wasn't asking to hold her ....yet.

Miranda smiled as she watched the two of them and knowing Ro was in good hands, took the opportunity to disappear and let someone else take charge of the infant for a little while, the shoe on the other foot, so to speak. Though she was tired, she'd raised a child once already and had this whole mothering thing down pat. "Oh, Gabi!" she called, waving a hand at her niece. "Where's George" I want to meet him!"

With the children distracted with a baby to coo over, it was the perfect time for the adults to grab some food, which was what Gabi was doing as Miranda hailed her. With hot dogs set aside to cool for when the twins decided that Ro was boring, she smiled, waving to her aunt fondly. "He's inspecting the meat with the boys," she told Miranda, reaching over to hug her. "And be gentle," she added teasingly. "I don't want to scare him off."

Miranda hugged her niece back and smiled warmly. She loved her brother's children like they were her very own, and this gathering was exactly what the doctor ordered, especially after the tragedy of Lei's death. "The tall blond?" she asked, peeking over at men huddling over the meat, like it was something profound and important. "Oh, he's lovely. Do you think he'd like to model for me sometime?" she blurted, unable to separate work from play, but in a good way. "I'm so happy for you, sweetheart," she told her further, touching a kiss to her cheek. For once, Miranda did not mention marriage, knowing better than to tease Gabi, unlike Dom.

Gabi blushed, but there was no disguising the happiness in her smile as she answered. "He is lovely," she agreed softly. "Almost perfect. And the boys love him. Hell, even Ennis gave him the stamp of approval." She giggled; it was an odd situation, and certainly not one anyone would have expected to find Gabi in a few years ago. She lowered her voice for Miranda's ears only. "I know it's early days, but I love him. I just want him to be happy with us, that's all."

"Sweetheart, he wouldn't be here if he wasn't happy," Miranda reminded her niece. She had tried to fill Felicity's shoes after she'd died and be there for her niece and nephews, but she had her own life and her own child to raise and could only do so much, though she loved them like her own. "Almost perfect is about as close as you're going to get," she said. She made no mention of Ennis, but was glad Gabi had his approval. He could have made things very difficult for Gabi if not for that. "I hear he's been staying at Beecham House. How does your father feel about that?"

"To be honest, I don't know," Gabi admitted with a quiet chuckle, pausing a moment to call the boys over and give them their hot dogs. With two little faces quickly covered in ketchup, she straightened up once again to continue talking. "Dad hasn't really talked to me about it, except to tell me that if George wants to move in, he's welcome to. I'm not sure. Maybe he feels like he's not my number one guy anymore, maybe he's relieved. He seems happy for me."

"I think it's good for your father to be with his family, so long as you don't think the house is too small for all of you," she said, leaning down to swipe a bit of ketchup from Jake's face and lick it off her finger, like any good mother would do. What she was trying to say was that she didn't think Gordon should be alone. Being alone was what had caused his problems with alcohol all those years ago, and no matter how much she'd tried to convince him, he just wasn't interested in dating.

Gabi raised a brow, understanding what wasn't being said. Of everyone, she had been the one who had weathered Gordon's alcoholism with him. "It wasn't too small for us," she pointed out with a faint smile. "So long as we don't have more than four more children, I think we'll fit."

"Your father loves having you and the boys there," Miranda told her niece what her brother likely wouldn't. "I don't think he'd mind another man in the house," she told her. Or a few more children, for that matter. Gordon's life had been littered with tragedy, and it was good to see him and his children happy for once. "Honestly, sometimes I wish Bethany was closer," she said with a faint frown, though her daughter and grandchildren were only a portal trip away.

"I'm sure they do too, sometimes," Gabi assured her gently. "But you know you're always welcome to drop in, right' We're not so very far away, and if you need someone to take Ro for a night, so you get a break, we can do that. Or Vicki would." She chuckled, unsurprised to see Vicki cuddling Ro as she chatted with the others.

"Yes, I know, but ...." Miranda trailed off, that faint frown still on her face, which was very un-Miranda-like. "Rufus is really attached. He's very protective and ..." Her frown deepened, letting Gabi know something she had not shared with another living soul, but Bethany. "I think he's afraid her mother's killers will come for her next," she said very quietly, almost afraid to even put voice to that thought.

"Why would they?" Gabi asked softly. "Ro isn't a Slayer, she isn't a threat to them. And if they were going to try, wouldn't they have done it on the same night they went after Lei?" She wrapped an arm around Miranda, squeezing gently. "There's protective, and there's over-protective. It would be good for him, for both of you, to let her go to someone you trust for just a night, even just a few hours, and recognize that she isn't in any more danger than any other child."

Miranda sighed as she leaned into her niece's embrace, needing that little bit of reassurance. It was ironic in a way that the woman who was always so full of exuberance, always so supportive of all those around her, was the one needing a little reassurance. "Yes, but you all have your own families to take care of, and I don't want to impose."

"Miranda, I can handle twin boys and my own father," Gabi reminded her in a comical tone of voice. "You really think one tiny girl is going to be trouble in that situation?" She chuckled. "Or with Jon and Vicki, who routinely manage two children and a dog, not to mention the Old Man' Or how about Des and Piper" You're not alone, you know. We'll all pitch in; you just have to tell us what you need us to do."

Miranda shook her head, actually dashing an errant tear from the corner of her eye before it made her mascara run. "Des and Piper have a baby, as do all of you." Although ....Her gaze settled on Cian and Leilani who seemed to have separated themselves from the larger gathering and were absorbed in some private conversation or other. But no, she couldn't do it to them. Neither of them had enough experience with children to handle an infant on their own. It was the same with Taylor and Kaylee, though Kaylee had served as the resident babysitter at Maple Grove for years.

Gabi snorted with laughter, rolling her eyes. "Really' One more baby in a house full of babies is really going to make that much of a difference?" She chuckled gently, shaking her head. "All right. Lena. Or Jaz. They both need the practice."

"It's just hard, you know?" Miranda said, trying to smile but failing. "We were ready to be grandparents, but we never expected to be adopting a baby. We were never expecting Lei to ..." She broke off again, her lower lip trembling. "I love Ro. I really do. She's such a good baby. She's an angel really, but I'm not her mother, Gabi. What happens when she's older" When she wants to know why she doesn't look like us" When she wants to know what happened to her mother?"

"You tell her," Gabi said simply. "You tell her the truth, always. And you have a perfect example right here on the Grove of families that don't always look like each other - look at the Storms. Three children adopted, but no one would ever think they weren't family. It's not what you look like, it's how loved you are. And Ro will be loved. She already is."

Miranda nodded, knowing Gabi was right. Hadn't she told all that to Rufus already, when he was feeling uncertain of himself" She dabbed at her tears, still feeling the heartbreak of Lei's death. "I know. And we love her, we do. I can't even imagine my life without her anymore, but it's not easy being parents at our age. You know, we'll be in our seventies when she graduates high school." Maybe she was just feeling tired. She wasn't used to two o'clock feedings and diaperings and all the other work involved with having a baby, and yet, it was quite simply the most rewarding thing she'd ever done in her entire life.

"Oh yeah' Take a look at Humph over there." Gabi nodded toward Old Man Granger, who was holding court with a plate piled high with the choicest bits off the barbecue. "He's in his eighties. Does he seem like he's not enjoying having young people around him to you?"

"No, I suppose not," Miranda replied, looking over at Humphrey. She didn't even have to ask to know the Old Man was enjoying himself. He was always at his best when surrounded with family, especially the younger ones. "What do you think he'd do if I handed off Ro to him for a while?" she asked, with a trace of mischief in her eyes. She wasn't thinking of asking him to babysit, but she thought he might enjoy meeting his newest grandniece up close and personal. Whether she was a Granger by blood or not, she was still family.

"I think he'd probably refuse to give her back," Gabi laughed. He'd abducted her boys straight from their crib when he'd first met them. "Why don't you go and try it' Before Vicki starts thinking about coming off her birth control too soon." She smiled warmly at her aunt. "I need to find Cian and Leilani. They're around here somewhere - they're supposed to be socializing!"

Miranda brightened, full of new purpose. She leaned close and kissed Gabi's cheek again. "Thanks, Gabi, and I may take you up on that offer sometime soon!" she promised before rushing off to cajole Vicki into letting her have Rowan back so she could pass her off to Humphrey, like a tiny living football. "They're over there!" she called back with a nod of her head toward the tree beneath which Cian and Leilani were currently smooching.

"Oh ....thanks!" Laughing, Gabi moved toward her brother, changing her mind when she saw how wrapped up he was in his little mermaid. With a softer smile, she turned about to rejoin George, leaving them to their private interlude.

What the couple was talking about was anyone's guess, but when Cian went down on one knee, taking Leilani's hands in his and looking up with her with a radiant smile on his face, his eyes sparkling with tears, it became pretty obvious.

Only a few minutes earlier, the pair had been deep in private conversation, though no one knew what had been said between them but the two of them. Cian had led Leilani aside, to relax beneath the cool shade of a willow tree, as nervous as a schoolboy on his first date ....

"Lani, do you remember when Tommy and Lena got married?" he asked her tentatively.

Trusting as always, Leilani hadn't batted an eyelash when Cian had drawn her away from the others, sea green eyes soft as she looked up at him. "On the beach," she nodded. "Everyone seemed very happy that day." Of course, it had been a perfect opportunity for them to see her tail, and yet no one had noticed when she had pulled herself from the sea after steadying the surfboard for Cian and the twins to play on.

Even if they had noticed, they wouldn't have said anything to her about it. The Grangers were welcoming like that, and this was Rhy'Din, where nothing surprised any of them much - certainly not a mermaid. At least, he hadn't chosen a vampire or ghoul as a mate. "Yes, on the beach," he confirmed, taking hold of her hands. This was going to take some time to explain, but he hoped she'd understand. "Do you-do you understand what that was all about?" he asked patiently.

She seemed to consider this for a long moment. Social conventions and customs were not Leilani's strong point, but she was learning. Slowly but surely, with a lot of help from Cian, she was learning how mostly human society worked. "It was a ritual," she said thoughtfully. "About people witnessing them making promises to each other."

"Yes," he confirmed again. "Promises like the ones we made to each other when we became mates, remember?" he asked, knowing she would. They had followed the traditions of her people, but thus far, they had not followed those of his. He'd never thought much of it - not so long as they were away from Rhy'Din - but now that they were home and surrounded by family, his feelings on the matter had changed. "I-I've been meaning to ask you ....to talk to you about some things ..." he started, licking his lips nervously.

She nodded. "And it was important that people saw them making those promises," she offered, proving that she had at least known what was going on, even if she didn't understand quite why. Her head tilted, pouring blond hair over her shoulder as she looked up at him curiously. "What is wrong, Cian' You do not look like you feel very well."

"No, I ....I feel fine ....I'm just ..." He sighed. How was he going to explain everything he wanted to explain to her - everything he needed to explain to her - in a way she'd understand. "It's just I ....I think I'm ready to settle down, Lani. You know" To stay in one place. To-to raise a family maybe ..." he even ventured that far. He knew it was possible - she was proof enough of that. Her father had been human, just like him, and yet there she was.

"Here?" she asked, not questioning his desire to settle in one place. Whatever her Cian desired, she would give him, if it was within her power to do so. It was only the locale she was concerned with. "So far from the sea?"

"Yes," he started, but quickly shook his head and corrected himself. "No! I mean ....Yes, here on Rhy'Din, but ....We could build a house near the sea ....or even buy a boat." It was no secret that he loved the sea as much as she did, and it would break both their spirits to be too far from it, even if it were only to live at Maple Grove. Tommy and Lena lived near the sea; why couldn't they' And money was really no obstacle.

She laughed her joyful little laugh as he confused himself with his answer, still smiling as he made it clearer what it was he was hoping they would do. "Stay close to family, but on the water," she clarified herself, her fingers rippling in his grasp as she thought about this. She liked the permanence of having a place that was theirs, but the cottage was on the Grove, a good half hour or more from the sea. The only thing that would make that permanence perfect would be proximity to the medium that she was most at home in.

He would never ask or expect her to stay far from the sea, though they had been staying at Primose Place these last few months. Now that summer was here, there was no reason to worry about the weather, and he knew she would never be happy too far inland. "Yes," he confirmed, as she seemed to grasp his meaning, but he wasn't finished yet. "And I think I'd like to get married. I mean, I know we already promised ourselves to each other, but ..." He paused a moment again, terrified to continue, but not because of her - because of something else from his past that still haunted him.

"It would make me very happy if you would be my wife," he told her quietly. He drew a deep breath to gather his courage and went down on one knee in front of her, like a prince wooing his princess. "Leilani, would you marry me?" he asked, looking hopefully up at her, knowing all the eyes at the gathering were likely turning toward them, but the others were right. It was time he proclaimed his love for her in front of those who they loved and trusted. It was time to set aside childish dreams and wishes and settle down and start a family with the woman he loved and wanted to spend the rest of his days with.

Startled by the way he suddenly knelt down in front of her, drawing almost all eyes to them, Leilani's eyes widened as Cian spoke. She could tell that her answer was very important to him, so important it could change things if she answered the wrong way. But to answer the right way, there was one thing she needed to know first. Acutely aware of all those eyes on her, she hunkered forward, half-crouching to look him in the eye. "What's a wife?"

"A wife is the woman a man chooses to spend his life with," he explained, which was practically the same thing as mate really, though the word mate seemed to imply breeding, where wife did not. "If you would be my wife, then I would be your husband. Like Vicki and Jon, and Miranda and Rufus, and Tommy and Lena ..." he tried to explain, a serious look on his face. "I love you, Leilani, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you. I want us to be-to be joined in every way possible. If you will be my wife, then you will add my name to yours, and no one can come between us ever again."

It was clear from the look in her eyes that she didn't understand why it was necessary to put more words to a mating that already existed. But she could see how much this meant to him, and she loved her Cian with everything she was. Her smile flickered into sight, one hand untangling from his to smooth her fingers against his cheek as she leaned down to brush the tip of her nose to his in a gesture of affection she was growing increasingly fond of. "I love you, too. And yes, I will be your wife."

He surged to his feet, a brilliant smile spreading across his face, as he picked her up off her feet and spun her around in a circle laughing, while applause broke out among those who were watching the drama unfold. Laughing, he set her down gently, his arms around her waist and kissed her properly and in front of everyone who was watching. There was only one, "Ewww," among the group and that had come from Ben, who was having a taste of his very first pickle.

Leilani squealed with laughter as he spun her about, holding on tight even after she'd found solid ground beneath her feet to answer his kiss as fiercely as he gave it. She didn't even hear the applause, or the mild disgust of one small person, too caught up in how happy her Cian suddenly was. "What happens now?"

"I'd say now we tell everyone, but ..." Cian actually blushed a little as he chanced a glance at his family. One of them - he wasn't sure which but would have bet on Dominic - was actually wolf-whistling. "I think they already know."

A little intimidated by all the attention, Leilani huddled into Cian's arms, looking up at him curiously. "Does that mean we are married now?" she asked him, still not quite on board with how it all worked.

Cian chuckled at her question. He had a feeling she might have thought that. "No, not yet," he looked over at those gathered about, wondering if someone had hoped this would happen all along. "But that's easily remedied," he added, knowing Dom would easily be able to do the honors, as he had for so many other Grangers.

But it was Miranda who, unsurprisingly, swooped in to take charge - not until after she had finished chewing Jon out for not letting her in on the surprise. "All right, you two. First you have to eat, because if you don't eat, you're going to pass out," she said, dragging them both bodily toward the food. "And then, we'll get you cleaned up and properly dressed and have a wedding by moonlight."

"Very easily remedied," Dom called through a huge mouthful of beef and bread, saluting them as they were dragged toward the buffet table and the ever increasing piles of meat and fish that were coming off the barbecue.

"You heard the woman," Vicki added. "Well met by moonlight means you need a big dinner. Dig in!"

Cian was starting to feel like all of this had been a set up, but he was smiling brightly through it all. How could he be upset with a family who only wanted them to be happy' He laughed at both Dom and Vicki, even as Miranda dragged them both over to the buffet table and shoved plates in their hands before wandering off again to check on Rufus and Ro. "Yes, ma'am!" he replied, smirking over at Leilani. "You get the feeling we've just been set up?"

"I don't know," his little mermaid responded quite honestly, glancing down at the plate in her hands as various other hands piled it high with fish and salads. "What does being set up feel like?"

"It feels like this," Gabi interrupted, joining them with Theo dozing on her shoulder. "Congratulations. I suppose this means I need to go home and put a skirt on, hmm?"

Cian laughed at both his little mermaid and his sister, one with a plate being piled up with food stuffs and the other seemingly annoyed at the idea of having to change her clothes. "You don't need to do anything, Gabs," he told her. "We could all get naked and do it that way if you want," he teased.

His sister laughed, rocking gently to keep her trouble maker dozy on her shoulder for the time being. "You are joking, aren't you?" she asked with comical dismay. "If Miranda's going to make you two get changed, do you really think she's going to let me wear jeans to your wedding?"

Cian rolled his eyes. "Anything to make Miranda happy," he quipped, though that was half-true today. He'd heard through the family grapevine about Lei and though he didn't really follow all the family gossip or completely understand the situation, he sympathized. "Did you already know about this?" he asked, gesturing with a hand to everything and everyone around them and assuming he and Lani were the only ones who'd been kept in the dark.

Gabi shook her head. "Nope, not a clue," she told him cheerfully. "I thought it was a random we're bored come and have dinner sort of thing. Besides, Miranda didn't know. If she'd known, everyone would have, right?" Which was true enough. Dom was the only person who'd been warned about the possibility, but the only really guilty parties were Jon and Vicki, who were conveniently out of reach at this present moment.

"Jon called and asked us over for a barbecue," Cian explained, wondering how things had morphed from there or if it had all been planned in advance. He wouldn't have put it past Vicki, but didn't think Jon was quite that capable of scheming. Nevertheless, it didn't much matter now. "Are you okay with it?" he asked, not really liking being the center of attention and not wanting to force anything on anyone.

Gabi's smile softened at his query. "Ci, why wouldn't I be?" she asked him in a gentle tone. "It's long overdue, and so long as you're happy, so am I. You're perfect for each other, and you've been together long enough to know that. I'd say it's about time she became a Granger, wouldn't you?"

Cian laughed. "That's exactly what Vicki said," he told her, searching the crowd for the guilty party, but not finding her. "Remind me to thank her later," he told her, as he filled his own plate with food stuffs, though it seemed Leilani probably had enough for both of them. "How are things going with you-know-who?" he asked, spying George off chatting with Humphrey while he carried the other half of Gabi's twins on a shoulder.

For now, it seemed as though Leilani was content to try and make a dent in the food that had been piled onto her plate, nibbling on prawns and anything else to hand as the siblings chatted. There was no sign of nerves in her at all; after all, she didn't really understand what was going on.

Gabi glanced toward George as Cian did, her smile suddenly all kinds of happily secretive. "It's going well," she told her brother, deeply grateful to him for not letting her walk away from that crucial first date. Her voice lowered as she leaned a little closer. "Just between us, we already know where we're going. We're just ....taking our time getting there."

It had only been a few months since Gabi had met the gentleman doctor, and yet, Cian wasn't surprised. In fact, he was overjoyed that his sister had found someone at last that she could count on and who loved and cared for her as she deserved. "Don't take too long or you'll end up like me," he warned with a chuckle before popping a prawn into his mouth.

"Oh, don't you worry," she giggled softly. "We have a date, unlike you." She looked to Leilani, knowing a little bit more than most in the family about a surprise coming up that evening. "I'll have to find a camera for tonight. There's no way I'm missing out on pictures of this."

Cian narrowed his eyes at his sister, wondering what she was alluding to. "I'm not going to be forced into wearing a silly hat or something, am I?" he asked, knowing there were some strange wedding customs out there they could be forced into taking part in. "I'm not doing the Chicken Dance, either," he added, just for good measure. Just a simple exchange of vows in witness of their family was all that he wanted.

"No, you're just going to be dressed up properly the way you should," Gabi assured him with a smile. "Which is, of course, why Miranda wants you both fed sooner rather than later, so she can bundle you off to her house and make sure her creations fit properly with plenty of time. Are you sure you're okay with this?"

"Any excuse to play Dress Up!" Cian said with a laugh, referring to Miranda, not himself. It was a minor miracle that he'd managed to shave and cut his hair. He'd been looking a little scruffy the last few years, but Leilani hadn't seemed to mind. In fact, she'd seemed to like him that way. He looked over at Leilani with a thoughtful expression on his face, wondering if she was okay with it and if she had any idea what she was about to get herself into. "There's still a chance to back out," he warned her quietly.

The little Syreni looked up with her mouth full, hurriedly chewing to swallow as Cian offered her that quiet warning. She wiped her lips with the back of her hand, glancing between him and Gabi curiously. "Back out of what?"

"This wedding thing," he replied, though from the look on his face, it was obvious that if she did, she'd likely break his heart - a heart that had been broken twice before. "My very well-meaning aunt is probably going to want to dress you up in some ridiculously frilly outfit and put you on display," he warned further.

"Oh, be nice," Gabi broke in. "It's not frilly, Leilani, it's beautiful. And you will look absolutely amazing in it, I promise."

Blinking her way between the siblings once again, Leilani considered this in her thoughtful way for a long moment. "We are wedding now?" she asked, having somehow missed that in the rush for the food. Her smile grew as she looked up at Cian. "Your wish granted in one day."

Cian's smile softened. "No, not yet, but we will be soon." Not soon enough, perhaps, but his mother had once told him that good things were worth waiting for. He had waited a lifetime for Leilani, but it seemed the time for waiting was over. Before the night was over, they'd be husband and wife.

((Well, that escalated fast, didn't it' Wedding coming up soon, hopefully!))
