Jon's stint as Ben Weatherstaff had ended a few nights ago, after the final curtain fell on The Secret Garden. The play itself had gone well, but as always it had taken him a few days to relax and get back into Daddy mode after being in actor mode for the last month or so. The play had given him a few things to think about, but nothing overly worrisome. Working with children had been an interesting experience and one he was hoping to repeat sometime in the near future. In fact, he and Mataya had been discussing doing something for Children's Week, but they hadn't decided just what as yet. Now that work was done, it was time to switch gears, and though Jon loved the theater, there was one role he loved even more and that was that of husband and father.

It was just as well he loved it, given that Vicki was back full time at the Shanachie now. She loved her children, but it was a relief to speak to people her own age during the day and not be at the mercy of a toddler and her increasingly ambulatory little brother. As it happened, she was late home today, stopping in the study to say hello to Humphrey and Cosmo before heading upstairs to the suite of rooms she shared with Jon and their terrible twosome. "Honey, I'm home!"

"In here!" Jon called when he heard his wife's voice announcing her arrival home. Some might think the tables were turned, with Jon playing Mister Mom while Vicki was away at work, but Jon enjoyed these occasional breaks from the theater to spend with his children, and as crazy as their schedules were, it worked for them. He was currently found in the living room bouncing Ben on his lap while Emily was curled up at his side, the three of them watching Frozen for what had to be the millionth time.

Hearing the unmistakeable sound of that film, Vicki paused just inside the door to wince before moving into the living room to join them. "Well, hello, my intrepid band of marauding princesses," she teased them, bending to kiss Jon, then Ben, and finally to be virtually throttled by Emily in a hello hug. "And how are we this evening, hmm?"

"Mommy's home!" Jon exclaimed with a grin, pausing the movie a moment so Emily could tackle her mother with a hug. Even Ben, who'd been perfectly content on his father's lap a moment ago, was reaching for his mother's arms and whining for attention. "Have you eaten" I saved you some dinner," he told her as he got off the couch and handed Ben over to greet his mother.

Laughing as she was handed the children, Vicki hiked Emily onto one hip, and Ben onto the other, smothering both of them in ticklish kisses for a long moment. With the two of them giggling insanely, she offered Jon a warm smile. "You are a life-saver - thank you, stud muffin," she nodded. "Lucius somehow managed to lose the finalized blueprints for the next rep production, so we had to scramble to get them made up again."

"Nothing my amazing wife can't handle, I'm sure," he replied, rescuing her from at least one child once they'd said their hellos. "All right, you two little imps. Finish up with Anna and Elsa and then it's time for bed," he said, plunking first one child and then the other on the floor in front of the movie. "Give your mother a chance to breath."

Having been allowed to strain their mother's arms to breaking point holding both of them at once, Emily and Ben didn't offer much in the way of argument as they were sat down in front of the movie once again. Vicki rolled her eyes, chuckling to herself as she lost her children to Frozen. "If only there was a way to distill what that film does and have it in a form we could dose them with," she mused playfully, moving to wrap her arms around her husband. "How have you been today?"

"I think they're already dosed," Jon remarked as the two small ones settled right back into watching the film. Ben's thumb went right into his mouth and he leaned over to rest his head against his big sister's shoulder. "I tried to talk her into watching something else, but she insisted," Jon whispered back. He - perhaps like other fathers with young daughters - couldn't wait until Emily discovered something else to obsess about besides Anna and Elsa. It wasn't that he disliked it exactly; it was only that he'd seen it so many times he could recite it from start to finish.

"I'd forgotten how tiring it is chasing after a couple of kids all day," he remarked honestly, though he was smiling. "How do you feel about alfredo' I had the cook save some for you." Apparently, they had eaten with Humphrey that night, so Jon hadn't had to worry about cooking.

Vicki chuckled, kissing his chin affectionately. "Right now, love, I think I'd eat a horse if you could get it onto the plate in bite-sized chunks," she told him with a grin. "It feels very good to be home tonight." She glanced at the cuddling duo on the floor. "At least they're not trying to kill each other."

The only member of the family that was missing was Cosmo, who was downstairs keeping the Old Man company. "No, you wouldn't," he said, chuckling. Jon had learned early on that Vicki was a strict vegetarian. It had been a bit of a challenge at first, since he was not, but they'd managed to sort that out, too. He snorted at her remark as he started toward the kitchen. "You should have seen them earlier. Ben got a hold of one of Emily's dolls, and you'd have thought the world was coming to an end."

She laughed. "I can imagine. I swear she flips a switch and turns into a vengeful Fury until she thinks all is right with the world again." They'd both been blessed with Emily's tantrums from time to time, and Ben's, too. Vicki didn't think she was ever going to forget the visit to the funfair that had almost ended in disaster when they both won a game and both wanted the same toy. "I think I would rather have been here than at work, all the same," she chuckled quietly. "You have no idea how weird it is to have Mataya in full costume and make up panicking over your desk at you while you're trying to work."

Jon couldn't help but laugh, especially about that bit about Mataya. "On the contrary, darling, I have experienced that more than once." He peeked into the living room once to make sure Frozen was still occupying the children before going to the oven to retrieve the fettuccine that he'd been keeping warm. "But you want to keep working, don't you?" he asked curiously. He knew what it was like to feel torn between family and career. It wasn't easy to juggle them both, and it would only get harder if they ever decided to have more children.

"I would, yes," Vicki nodded, easing down into a seat at the table. She frowned a little as she looked through the door to where the children were sitting. "I should talk to 'Taya about reducing my hours, though. Once the initial briefs are done for each production, I'm not needed at the theater all day every day. I should work out when I'm needed, and present her with a work schedule that would suit all of us better."

"I'm sure 'Tay would be agreeable about that." As agreeable as he was with Liv and her schedule. She and Johnny were in New York visiting family right now, and Jon never begrudged her that time away from Rhy'Din. The truth was, despite the success of the Fifty Shades... series and the Oscar he'd won the year before, he hadn't received any movie offers recently that tempted him much. Jon slid the fettuccine onto a plate before setting it on the table in front of her, along with a napkin and fork. "Coffee, tea, or me?" he asked with a smirk, as he reached for a cup.

"Mmm ..." With her mouth already full, Vicki had to chew and swallow before she could answer, chuckling as she licked her lips. "I have to choose just one?" she asked plaintively, grinning at Jon as she loaded her fork again. "How about tea, and you stir it with your wang, would that work?"

"Hmm, how about tea and you can have some wang later?" he compromised with a smirk. Though the children were busy watching Frozen, he wasn't taking any chances. He didn't really want Emily talking about his winkie the way that Lyneth talked about Desmond's. And speaking of Desmond ....Jon put the kettle on for some tea, frowning thoughtfully. "I got a phone call from Desmond earlier," he started.

"Now that sounds like a plan," she nodded in agreement, slipping her shoes off under the table with a quiet groan of relief. His mention of his brother made her grin - she remembered what Piper had been like with a newborn Lyneth, after all. "Oh' And how is he coping with having a newborn in the house?" she asked teasingly, knowing full well Jon's older brother was going to be operating on auto-pilot for a few weeks.

"I think he's still in a state of shock, to be honest," Jon said as he went about preparing two cups of tea. He had always been a faithful coffee drinker until he'd met her. While he still preferred coffee in the morning, he liked a nice cup of tea in the evening after dinner. "They, uh ....They decided on a name," he started, sounding a little baffled for some reason.

"They did?" Vicki looked up, pleased at this development. "They've been arguing over names for months, it's wonderful they managed to choose one. What did they decide on, in the end?"

In the meantime, someone had let Cosmo in and he had gone straight to the living room and settled down near the children, as if he was as responsible for them as his master and mistress. "They didn't," Jon replied, returning to the table with two cups of tea, one of them just the way she liked it. He set the cup down and took a seat at the table, where he was easily able to look in at the children and Cosmo. "Lyneth named him."

"Oh dear." She couldn't help laughing a little. As much as she loved Lyneth, Vicki took everything that little madam said with a pinch of salt. "They're braver than I thought they were." Pausing to take another mouthful, she lifted her cup to sip her tea. "What did she decide on, then" You seem bemused."

"She, uh ....she actually made an interesting choice," Jon said, obviously a little surprised by the choice that she'd made. Bemused was certainly the word for the way he felt about it. He wondered if Humphrey had felt bemused when they'd chosen the honor him by naming their son Benjamin Humphrey. "Dylan Jonathan," Jon replied, with that decidedly bemused expression on his face.

"Mm?" Her meal finished, Vicki set the plate aside, giving him her full attention as he finally got around to actually telling her what Des, Piper, and Lyneth had decided to call the newest member of their family. The name made her smile deepen. "Oh, Jon, how lovely. They named him after you!"

"It would seem so, but why?" he asked, looking completely befuddled by it all. "Why me?" he asked, hoping to pick his wife's much wiser brain. "They want us to be godparents, along with Piper's sister and her husband. Why us, Vic?" Yes, he was Desmond's brother, but there were other far more deserving candidates, he thought.

Vicki paused for a moment, giving herself a chance to absorb and respond with actual thought, rather than the immediate reaction that sprang to mind. "Sweetheart, why did we name Ben after Humphrey?" she asked him gently. "Because we love him, and we want him to know that. And why did we choose Johnny and Liv to be godparents" Because there's no one we would trust more with our children. Why do you think the reasons are any different for your brother?"

"Yes, but ....I never even knew I had a brother until a few years ago," Jon insisted. He could have pointed out how Jason or Rufus or even Humphrey were more deserving, but in the end, he felt more than merely honored by the gesture - he felt deeply touched by it. But maybe it wasn't just about being Desmond's brother; maybe there was more to it than just that.

"So?" she shrugged. "You're family. More than that, you're family to more than just Des. Piper's been leaning on you like a brother for as long as we've been together - you were the only person who noticed something wasn't right with Oliver. You helped her feel as though she wasn't alone. And Des ....well, he's been lost for a long time. He's found somewhere he belongs, and you're a part of that."

"Yes, but ....Des said it was Lyneth's idea," Jon went on, as if he was trying to find a reason why they shouldn't name their son after him; as if he wasn't deserving of the honor. "I just ..." Jon trailed off with a shrug, not trusting himself to continue without giving away his feelings.

"And why shouldn't she name her little brother after you?" Vicki pointed out. "She's named after Kaylee, after all, and you are her uncle. Lynnie's very big on family, Jonny. I think it's lovely that they want their little boy named after you."

Jon nodded his head, agreeing with his wife but too choked up to say so in so many words. Instead, he cleared his throat and took a sip of tea, turning his head a little so she wouldn't catch sight of the telltale shimmer of tears in his eyes.

He really should have learned by now that Vicki always knew when he wasn't fully in control of his emotions. With a gentle scrape of the chair over the floor, she shifted close to him, curling her arm about his back. "You silly man," she said fondly, kissing his shoulder. "There's nothing wrong with being touched by such a sweet gesture,"

"I wish I'd known him sooner," Jon said quietly, setting his cup on the table and turning to his wife, who knew him better than anyone, even those who'd known him all his life. "But then, he probably wouldn't have liked me much if he'd known me then," he added. Then again, would Jon have liked Desmond" It was nothing short of a miracle that they'd never run into each other or known of the other, until just a few years ago.

"Everything happens for a reason, love," she reminded him gently. "Even the order in which they happen. Des would never have countenanced having anything to do with any of us before his mother died, and if Piper and Lyneth hadn't been at that Christmas party' He probably wouldn't have come back. Like you and me ....without everything that went before, I doubt you would have looked twice at me." She smiled affectionately, stroking her fingers through his curls. "And now look at us. Old married couple with two children."

"Don't say that, Vicki ....Yes, I would have," he insisted, feeling just a little bit guilty about a past he couldn't even remember, though he knew she was probably right. "It doesn't really matter anyway. Getting shot was probably the best thing that happened to me, besides you," he admitted. It might have sounded harsh, but it was most likely true. If he hadn't been shot, if he hadn't lost himself and his memories and his past in the shooting, there was a good chance he wouldn't have ever become the man he was today. That man had been buried deeply inside him somewhere, but it had taken a near-death experience to bring it out of him.

"Besides," she said softly, "it doesn't matter that you're still only getting to know each other. I think having your first nephew named after you shows a real desire to have you in Des' life, don't you? It doesn't matter what went before. A new baby means a new future, and it's clear that Des and Piper, and Lyneth, want you to be part of that."

"And I want to be part of it," Jon replied, swiping at an errant tear he hoped she didn't notice. "I'm just ....I'm shocked, that's all. I wasn't expecting it, and ....I really don't know what to say." And with that, his voice broke, crackling with emotion. Actor or not, he never could manage to hide his true feelings from his Victoria.

"Oh, sweetheart ..." She abandoned her coffee, curling her arms around him to hold him close. One thing she had always admired about Jon was how very close he was to his own emotions, how willing he was to express them, no matter how embarrassing it might be. Stroking his hair, she kissed his neck gently, unsurprised when a little hand touched her back.

"Daddy cry," Emily's little voice said behind her.

Vicki turned, smiling down at their son and daughter, and released Jon, bending to insert Emily into his lap before lifting Ben into her own. "Daddy's happy," she explained to them affectionately. "Because Auntie Piper and Uncle Des named their new baby boy after him."

Jon drew comfort from Vicki's embrace, unsure why he was feeling so emotional about all this. It had just been so unexpected. Jon sniffled back the tears, happy as they were, a little embarrassed to have been caught out by their daughter. From the mouths of babes or something like that. He took his daughter from Vicki to set her on his lap, an arm going around her so that she wouldn't fall, smiling at the little family gathered round him. His life truly was complete - everything he'd ever wanted was right there in that room. "You have a new baby cousin, Em. His name is Dylan."

"Ben baby," the toddler pointed out.

Vicki chuckled to herself, cuddling the little boy on her lap affectionately. "Yes, sweetie, Ben is our baby," she nodded. "Lynnie has a little brother now, just like you do."

Emily beamed her understanding, cuddling into Jon warmly. "My daddy."

Cosmo came wandering into the kitchen in search of a little attention or maybe just to check on his charges. He nudged Vicki's leg with his nose, as if to remind her he was there. In a way, he'd been the first of their children. "I will always be your daddy, Em. Yours and Ben's," Jon added, letting the toddler know she'd have to share him, but only with her brother.

Reaching down, Vicki rubbed the collie's ears, more than happy to include him in their little family scene even while Ben was slowly dropping off to sleep on her lap.

"Love daddy and mummy," Emily nodded happily, giggling as she pointed at her brother. "Sleepy bun."

"And Daddy and Mummy love you, too, peanut," Jon told her, nestling close to rub an eskimo kiss against her nose. He chuckled a little along with her to see Ben dropping off on Vicki's lap. "If you're all finished with Anna and Elsa, I'd say it's probably time to tuck two little angels into bed for the night."

"I think you might be right, Daddy," Vicki laughed quietly, gently shaking Ben to wake him up a little. "Bedtime, little man. You can finish watching the princesses tomorrow." The baby boy protested at being woken, grumbling as he was set up on her hip when she stood up. Vicki grinned at Jon. "What do you reckon, can we get them into bed before either one realizes they've been tricked?"

Whatever had prompted Jon's tears, they were gone now, replaced by a soft smile. "We can try," he replied, moving to his feet with Emily propped against one hip. "Time for bed, Em," he told her. "Even princesses need their sleep." Cosmo wagged his tail up at them and followed along toward the nursery, like he was herding his charges into bed.

Laughing at Cosmo's eagerness, Vicki fell into step with Jon, glad he had the joy of undressing Emily, who had something of a wicked backswing when she was sleepy. "Yes, yes, Nanna, we're coming," she teased Cosmo, letting the collie precede her into the children's shared bedroom. They'd have to separate them at some point, but for now, sharing a room seemed to cut down on the painfully early mornings.

Jon had to chuckle a little at the comparison to the Darlings' nanny in Peter Pan, though Cosmo was likely as vigilant as any human would be, at least as far as watching over the children was concerned. Having children seemed to have calmed the hyperactive collie and given him some purpose. He'd adopted the children for his own and spent most nights sleeping nearby, like their own personal guardian angel. "Do you think he thinks they're his puppies?" he asked Vicki, not for the first time.

Smiling as she laid Ben down on the changing table to get the little boy ready for bed, Vicki glanced at the collie as he supervised the bedtime preparations. "Well, I'd rather he thought that than he considered them invaders," she grinned. "I think we got very lucky with our hyperactive little bundle of fur. Didn't we, Benny-boo?" With the baby boy distracted by her silly tone of voice, practiced hands got his diaper off, his bottom wiped, and the clean one on before he realized he had a cold rear.

Meanwhile, Jon was getting Emily changed into her jammies before ushering her into the bathroom to tinkle and brush her teeth before bed. Jon agreed they'd gotten lucky, but not just with the dog. "I'd blame luck," Jon said as he herded Emily into the bathroom. "But we sort of cheated." Or Dom had cheated; he wasn't sure which.

"Well, I cheated," Vicki agreed with that one, maneuvering Ben's flailing arms into a onesie for sleep time. "I knew what was coming, because you told me all about it. You didn't have a clue." She chuckled quietly, aware that Cosmo was watching her like a hawk as she popped the buttons on the baby's nightclothes.

"I didn't tell you everything," he pointed out. How could he had have when he couldn't remember most of it and what he did know of his past, he didn't like so much. None of that really mattered anyway. All's well that end's well, after all. The only sound that came from the bathroom after that was that of Jon helping Emily brush her teeth, until they finally returned, with a very sleepy Emily against his shoulder, apparently too sleepy to do a proper job at brushing her teeth. "She was practically falling asleep standing up."

"Definitely bedtime, then," Vicki grinned, raising her own sleepy bundle of floppy baby to her shoulder. Ben took hold of her hair, as he was wont to do, and sighed heavily, making her roll her eyes. "Maybe I should make a wig for his cuddly out of my hair, what do you think?"

Jon chuckled softly at Vicki's question as he laid his own little bundle of snuggly girl into bed and tucked the covers up around her. "I think a stuffed bear might be a better idea," he said, grabbing hold of Emily's favorite little stuffy and tucking it in beside her. "Now I lay you down to sleep, I pray the Lord your soul to keep. May God guard you through the night and wake you with the morning light," he whispered softly to his dozing daughter before kissing her tenderly on the cheek.

Easing Ben down into his crib, Vicki tucked him in with his very own Velveteen Rabbit, chuckling as he hugged it close. Brushing a kiss to his forehead, she stroked his cheek tenderly, murmuring her own prayer over him. "From ghoulies and ghosties and long-leggity beasties, and things that go bump in the night, the Lord preserve you, my little darling."

Jon frowned a little at Vicki's choice of prayer, hoping to God there would never be any ghoulies or ghosties or long-leggity beasties to worry about in their children's lives. Whether they raised them in Rhy'Din or on Earth, there was always the chance that some harm could come to them, no matter how vigilant they were. "Good-night, sweetheart," he whispered, Emily sighing softly in her sleep in reply.

Though she knew Jon wasn't comfortable with her choice of prayer, it had been the prayer her own father had said with her every night; the prayer her mother had taught him. It was a little piece of Emily Marshall that Vicki could share with her own children. Easing back from Ben, she moved over to kiss Emily's forehead gently before backing toward the door.

Jon switched places with Vicki so that he could do the same for baby Benjamin that he had for Emily, kissing him on the cheek and wishing him "Sweet Dreams", before joining Vicki at the door. "They really are angels, aren't they, Vic?" he asked, as he reached over to flick the nightlight on.

"When they're asleep, yes," she drawled through her smile, crouching to ruffle Cosmo's fur as the nightlight flickered into life. "Good boy, Cosmo," she praised him affectionately, for once not objecting to the lick that slathered her cheek in dog spit.

Cosmo was no prisoner here in the nursery. He was free to come and go as he pleased, choosing to spend his nights here on guard over the smallest and youngest master and mistress. Now and then, he'd find his way to Jon and Vicki's room, but mostly he watched over the children these days. Jon scritched between the dog's ears. It was said that a dog was man's best friend. While Jon couldn't speak for anyone else but himself, it was no secret that he adored Cosmo, who was just as much a part of the family as any of them. "Night, Cos. Good boy!" he echoed Vicki's praise.

The hyperactive collie barked once, his tail wagging like crazy, and licked Jon's cheek cheerfully, turning about to begin his own inspection of the nursery as Vicki chuckled quietly to herself. With Jon's hand in hers, she drew him gently out of the room, leaving the door open for Cosmo's ease on their way. "Thank you for letting them stay up until I got home," she murmured to her husband. "I miss you when I'm at work."

There was a solution to that problem and that was not to work, but both of them knew all too well that no matter how much they loved and missed each other when they were apart, their careers were as much a part of them as their family. It was what defined them and made them who they were. Though each choose their own way to express it, deep down, they were both artists and needed some creative expression in order to thrive. "I miss you when you're at work, too," he replied, touching a kiss to her cheek as they exited the nursery. It wasn't a big deal to leave the kids up a little bit late. It was no big secret that Jon wasn't overly fond of being alone, and he cherished every moment he had with those he loved.

She smiled, hugging her arm about his back as they eased away from their children. Adult time could be anything from adult time or curling up together on the couch - as much as she loved their children, it was nice to have Jon all to herself sometimes. "I think I could put it down straight as ....I miss you when you're in another room," Vicki admitted with a wry smile. "I spent so many years agonizing over whether or not you'd be ready for me when I got here. I still have irrational moments of panic sometimes, when you're out of sight."

He frowned a little at her brief mention of the past. He hadn't been ready for her when she'd arrived in Rhy'Din, but she had listened to everything he had told her during his brief sojourns into her past and she had believed in him. It had not been easy for either of them, but they had found each other in the end. And then, there had been the vampires and the ghouls and everything else that had tried to come between them. Jon halted, turning to face her, touching gentle fingers to her cheek. "I will never leave you again. I promise," he told her, before sealing that oft-given promise with a tender kiss.

His redhead smiled as he kissed her, turning into the embrace tenderly as she wrapped her arms about his waist. "Good," she murmured. "Because if you ever show even the slightest hint of it ....you, me, super-glue, it's going to happen."

He laughed at his wife's ever-present sense of humor. They balanced each other in that way, as he was often given to moodiness and she was almost always full of mirth and merriment. "That could be awkward," he replied, blue eyes dancing with mischief. "Though I wouldn't mind getting tangled up in you for a little while. That is, if you don't mind, Mrs. Granger."

Laughing, Vicki rose up onto her toes, her shoes forgotten beneath the kitchen table, nuzzling close to kiss him. That inquiry didn't really need an answer, did it' With the exception of two necessary breaks following the birth of their children, their sex life had never been anything but robustly healthy, and she couldn't see that changing anytime soon. "You, me, bed," she grinned between kisses, reaching down to spank his backside mischievously. "It's going to happen."

"No time like the present, cheeky wife of mine," he replied with a grin, scooping her up into his arms to take her to their own bedroom. Whether they made love or simply lay tangled in each other's embrace didn't matter. What mattered was that they were together and that they'd always be together, so long as they both lived.

((Such a cute little fambly ....Huge thanks to Jon's player!))
