For Jon and Correy

Quite how she managed it, not even Kaylee could say with any certainty. The anger and upset of the night before had fuelled her sobbing run through the streets of the city, and she had eventually found her way to a friend's house. Taken in, she thoroughly wet said friend's cushions with salt water and snot before pulling herself together.

She wasn't innocent of the harm that had been thrown around last night. But she, at least, wasn't too proud to apologise.

When Correy and Jon woke up, they would each find a small packet waiting for them on their bedside tables, wrapped in newspaper and with a small note, which read,

"I'm sorry."

Each packet contained a dictaphone, with a little label attached to the Play button, marked with 'press me'. And if they did press that button, they'd hear the faltering chords of a minor key, and the gentle cadence of Kaylee's voice, putting to tape something that had come to her overnight.

"Look into the night Searching for the light Given into fate and all that hate is now Turning into fight How did this go wrong" Should anger make us strong" Take away the love and trust, and you will be Alone and still belong

Falling into pieces Forgetting all that keeps us from the dark Folding at the creases Stealing faith with one unthinking remark

Don't scream Don't cry Don't bite the hand that feeds you Don't think Don't feel Don't remember that all we do is real

So make a sacrifice Swallow down the price Of pride and angry words, and now I realise You can't take my advice The pain has made us hard With hurt and anger scarred Instead of keeping warm, the homely hearth will soon Be a cold forgotten yard

Making accusations Hitting out to soothe the ache inside Seek evaluation Before the hate becomes a part of the tide

Don't shout Don't scream Remember that the pain is in us too Don't jump Don't fall Don't forget if one slips, won't we all ..."
