There were few things more relaxing than a long soak in a hot bath, with a good book and a glass of wine. Vicki rarely indulged in such pampering, usually because she felt guilty about spending so much time to herself when Jon was around. He was at work for the evening right now, though soon to come home, and after being dragged around the park by Cosmo for an hour, the redhead had given in and run the bath. She was just beginning to go wrinkly, evidence that perhaps it was time to get out.

Cosmo was planted just outside the bathroom door, head resting on folded paws, waiting for someone to and play with him, as if the walk in the park wasn't enough. Pathetically sad eyes watched Vicki while she relaxed, head popping up every now and then in anticipation that she just might be getting out of the tub. But then he heard the familiar sound of footsteps in the hallway and he was off to greet his master at the door. The door opened and Jon stepped inside, closing it behind him and announcing his arrival. "Honey, I'm home!"

She wasn't unaware of the guilt-trip the dog was trying to pull on her, but Vicki wasn't about to give in. She'd had dogs when she was younger, and had learned very early on never to give ground. Her head did lift, however, when Cosmo bounded to his feet, laughing as she heard the door open. "Brace yourself, incoming!"

Jon laughed as the dog welcomed him home, leaning down to greet him in return. "Good dog. Are you keeping your mistress out of trouble?" He smirked when he heard Vicki's warning. "He's all excited. What have you two been doing all night?" He ruffled the dog's ears before straightening to toss his keys, wallet, and phone on a table near the door.

"Oh, you know," she called back, the bath water sloshing as she sat up, setting her book safely out of the way. "We've been planning a romantic getaway, just the two of us. Only he refused to go without you; seems to think you're too much sexy to be left behind." She twisted to lean over the side of the bath, peering through the doorway to try and catch a glimpse of her fiance.

She might catch a glimpse of him moving around the apartment, making sure the door was locked, taking off his shoes and jacket and putting them away, Cosmo at his heels. He heard her voice coming from the bathroom and craned his neck to take a peek that way. "You planning on staying in there awhile?" He started unbuttoning his shirt. Shriveled or not, she was about to have a visitor.

She grinned, deliberately remained pressed against the side of the bath so he didn't get the view he was looking for. With her hair twisted up into a claw on the top of her head and the bubbles of her chosen bubble bath almost gone, Vicki really should have known better than to tease. "Well, that all depends whether or not I'm going to be left in here all on my own to melt away, doesn't it?"

"A nice hot soak sounds good right about now." He shrugged off his shirt - a blue button-down, for the record - and sauntered on into the bathroom, a warm smile on his face. "Care to share or should I wait my turn?" A singular bark signaled a certain dog's desire for attention. "Hush, you..." Jon turned to the dog, and scrubbed his fingers into his fur. "Ladies first."

"Since when do I ever say no?" She laughed, the blue of her eyes sparkling with tender invitation as she watched Jon berate the dog for his impatience. "Think there's enough room in here for all three of us?"

Jon chuckled, but replied with an emphatic, "No." He turned back to the dog and offered a little more love, before sternly telling him to sit, which Cosmo then obediently did. Jon sighed as he turned back to Vicki. "He really needs a girlfriend." This was not the first time Jon had suggested it. "He met a poodle in the park the other day. I think he's in love." He smirked as he pulled off his socks and started on his zipper.

Chuckling at the excited obedience of the Collie, Vicki rose onto her knees, her hands batting Jon's out of the way to undo button and zipper herself. With that familiarly wicked grin lighting up her face, she leaned close to swirl the tip of her tongue around the indent of his navel. "Well, you have to admit," she murmured, "it must be pretty galling to be the only person in the house not getting any."

Her attention to his navel elicited a soft groan, all the tension of the day suddenly draining out of him. His eyelids drooped closed as he let her finish the job on his zipper. He loved the theater, but it was often draining and returning home was the favorite part of his day, especially when he was returning home to a woman (and a dog) who loved him. "Maybe we should sire him out."

Her fingers bunched in material, dragging pants and underpants down over his legs as she smiled up at him, glancing just once to the tail-thumping Collie watching them with playfully intent eyes. "Either that, or get him neutered," she said softly. "He'll be a lot calmer if we lop them off." Was that a fair thing to say to a man standing naked in front of her" Probably not, but at least Jon knew she wasn't going to bite.

Jon knew she wasn't talking about him, but he still winced. Stepping out of the pants and leaving them on the bathroom floor, he climbed into the tub and settled himself behind Vicki, spreading his legs to make room for him between them. "Sounds painful. Do we really want a calm Cosmo?"

She slid backward into the cradle of his thighs, tipping her head back to rest it against his shoulder, turning her face to brush her lips against his jaw in a fond kiss or seven. "Mmm, you're right," she agreed. "Maybe when he gets arthritis."

He chuckled, blue eyes shining with happiness. He really couldn't remember ever feeling happier than he did right then. "That won't be for ages." He brushed a thumb against the back of her neck, leaning close then to follow that caress with one from his lips, breath warm against her neck as he exhaled a sigh.

The sensation of his thumb against that specific point on her neck was wonderful enough, but when he leaned to turn that caress into a kiss and a sigh, Vicki almost melted against him. It was one of only a few places on her body that could turn her boneless and pliable to his will, and only Jon knew all of them. He was rewarded with the gentle arch of her spine as she leaned back against him, lifting her arm to curl her hand through the curls at the back of his neck. "Good night, love?"

"It's improving," he remarked. It had been a good night, but it was getting even better now that he was home. Everything was going so well, ever since he'd met Vicki and put the vampires behind him. He leaned back against the tub with a soft contented sigh, wrapping both arms around her to pull her up against him. "How was your day' How are things at the studio?"

She sighed with him, curling her own arms over his to stroke her fingertips against his skin, looking up at the ceiling as her temple came to rest against his cheek. "Oh, you know, heading into the final straits. A few more shooting days, and then my life gets a lot more hectic. I love my job, but the PR campaigns for movies are a nightmare."

"Can't say I miss it," he remarked, turning his head to brush an affectionate kiss against her cheek. "You could come back to the theater, you know. Tay would love to have you back. Lelah can find another art director." He frowned a little, his chin coming to rest against her shoulder after pressing several gentle kisses there. "We'd see more of each other."

"Mmm ..." She nuzzled tenderly to his cheek in response, her eyes closing as she enjoyed the unquestioning warmth between them as they lulled in the water together. "I might," she admitted quietly. "I love movies, but it's just a little too much. I've never worked on such a small studio before."

"Lelah will understand." At least, he hoped she'd understand. He knew how much Vicki enjoyed her job, as much as he did, but now that they were together, things had changed. "You know I'd never ask you to give up something you love, and I know your work is important to you. Whatever you decide to do is fine with me." He was leaving the decision in her hands. It was her life and her career, after all. But at the same time, he didn't want to see her overwork herself when she didn't have to.

"She'll be pissed," Vicki predicted regretfully. "It's tantamount to abandoning her." She sighed, frowning a little as she nestled back against Jon. "I need to think about it carefully before I make any decisions."

He was still frowning a little behind her, one hand slowly sliding up and down her arm, almost unconsciously trying to reassure and soothe her. He knew she was probably right, but he also trusted that Lelah would eventually understand, especially now that they were trying to build a life together. "You should know I invested in the studio."

"You did?" Surprised, Vicki twisted, lifting her head to look him in the eye. "How did you get the money for that' 'Taya sank a huge amount into the studio to invest, even she wouldn't tell me how much." Wriggling around until her knees settled either side of his hips, she smoothed her hands to his jaw, gazing into his eyes in gentle concern. "How much?"

He frowned a little guiltily, wondering if he should have consulted her first before making such a big investment, but at the time, they weren't engaged to be married and he judged it to be a sound investment. He hadn't lied to her yet, and he wasn't about to now, and now that they were engaged, they were going to have to have these little discussions more often. "I'm not hurting for money, Vicki. It was a good investment."

She studied his eyes, trusting him not to make such a decision without thinking it through, but uneasy with the knowledge of so much money sunk into an industry they both knew to be shaky. "I can't help worrying," she admitted with a rueful smile, brushing her lips to his. "I'm sorry. I've never dated a multi-millionaire before." Yes, she was teasing, and no, she wasn't. Jon was definitely more loaded than anyone else she'd ever been with.

Now that the subject had come up, it was time to come clean. He met her gaze, unflinchingly, wanting there to be no secrets and no lies between them. "Alain approached me months ago to buy out his shares. I asked him to keep it quiet, so it wouldn't look like nepotism or something. I borrowed the money from Humphrey. He agreed it was a good investment. I should have told you sooner."

"The Baron backed out on her?" His red-haired fiancee slumped a little, closer into his lap, as she took this in. "I had no idea. I mean, he hasn't been around the lot this time around, but ....I didn't think he'd .....He sold you his shares?" A faint smile curved her lips. "Or rather, he sold Humphrey his shares through you. Does Humph know he's an investor in 21twelve?"

Yes and yes and yes. But he didn't say that. He felt a little better when she smiled, hoping she wouldn't be angry with him for investing so much money without telling her, but at the time, it seemed the logical thing to do. "Yeah, Humphrey knows. I told him I'd pay him back, but if the studio does as well as it's been doing, it will be a piece of cake."

It was testament to Vicki's self-control that she didn't immediately point out how precarious a deal that was. The studio's survival depended on producing movies of high quality that people wanted to pay money to see at the cinema or buy on any format. With only one movie under their belt, it remained to be seen how successful Lelah's pet project would be, and it fell to her team to make it happen. Which, sadly, meant Jon had just put more pressure on his fiance to stay in the job that was frazzling her nerves, though she was never going to mention that. She leaned closer, touching her lips to his fondly. "I think he might already think that you getting married is payback enough," she teased lightly.

Jon had no way of knowing what Vicki was thinking or worrying about, but he wouldn't have suggested her going back to the theater if he thought the success of the studio depended on her. The fact of the matter was, he was not hurting for money nor was he dependent on his family's income. He was independently wealthy and knew all he had to do was say yes to any one of the variety of projects that were continually being offered in order to recoup his investment. But he shared none of this at the moment, smiling instead, happily enjoying the moment of quiet between them. "Think so' He seems pretty fond of you. If I didn't know better, I might even be jealous." He teased back, pecking a light kiss against her lips.

"Well, it's your own fault for introducing us, isn't it?" she chuckled softly, smoothing her arms about his neck fondly as she nuzzled to him. They weren't likely to talk about this again unless some big windfall or disaster drastically altered their income, but neither did Vicki want to turn this into a serious discussion of their finances. It was strange to know that she was with someone who wouldn't be able to equate to the years she'd had to live on baked beans and toast because she couldn't afford anything else. "Any more decisions made about the Grove?" she asked him lightly, blue eyes twinkling impishly as her nose stroked against his.

His smile faded a little as the conversation turned to the possible but still undecided move to Maple Grove, feeling a little bit torn about it. He was enjoying the privacy the condo afforded and his life there with Vicki and Cosmo, but he knew Humphrey wasn't going to live forever and the thought of the old man there mostly on his own saddened him. "I don't think that's a decision I can make on my own," he told her honestly, all the tensions of the day melting away in her embrace.

She 'mmm'd thoughtfully, resting her forehead to his as her hands began to slosh hot water over his arms and chest, holding to the pretence of his wanting a soak rather than just an excuse to snuggle naked for a while. "Well," the redhead offered thoughtfully, "maybe you should talk to your cousin. You know, the one who lives on the yacht' Because if she's in charge, she won't be able to live on a pleasure boat during the busy season, will she" She might be moving back to the Grove for the summer, which means you don't need to worry over that decision for a little while longer. But, uh ..." She grinned gently. "If it helps, I always thought we'd be moving in with Humphrey once we got married anyway."

He was still frowning and the mention of Caroline moving back, possibly with her own beau it tow, only made him frown further. He didn't want to get in the way or step on toes, and Caroline was the head of the household, not him. "I just don't like him to be alone so much. He's not going to live forever." He sighed as he rested his forehead against hers, his arms sliding around her, if they weren't already there. He was enjoying the quiet moment afforded them both, and the relaxing warmth of the water around them, not to mention her company. "You said something about spending weekends there. Maybe we should do that. Give it a test period. I can talk to Caro and see what she thinks. I get the feeling Humphrey would welcome the company." The big house wasn't called the big house for nothing, and it saddened Jon that it had gone empty for so long.

Vicki smiled, pleased that he'd finally made a decision in the right direction. "Weekends it is, then," she agreed, brushing a kiss to his lips. "And still visiting on Tuesdays, because that man just doesn't know how to lose at Tiddlywinks properly yet."

He returned her kiss, chuckling at her remark. "He hasn't thrown the mat yet, has he? He's got me beat at chess. I won once, but I think he was feeling sorry for me and let me."

She laughed softly with him, stroking her fingertips lovingly over the silvery scars left on his shoulder months before. "Well, I would suggest Twister, but I think he'd guess that I was cheating then," she conceded with a grin. "That, or he'd enjoy the sight of us writhing around on the floor a little bit too much."

The scars on his shoulder were mostly forgotten, as was the entire incident. Now and then, he'd awaken in the middle of the night with a nightmare, but they were growing less frequent, the trauma of that time in his life slowly fading from memory. He laughed at her suggestion. "Or he'd try to join us and hurt himself."

"And you won't let me play poker with him," Vicki added with a snicker, "not after he suggested we play strip poker next time." She loved the by-play between Jon and his great-grand-uncle, pleased to be a part of it even in a small way. Humphrey had worked out very quickly that it was fun to poke Jon's green-eyed monster where she was concerned, and Vicki wasn't going to stop him.

Jon laughed. "Don't get him started. I think he'd enjoy that a little too much." He leaned back against the tub, pulling her up against him, sighing contentedly, even as the water started to cool. "He likes you, and it's nice to see him happy." Not to mention, it felt good to be finally finding a little happiness of his own. His life was finally coming together in a way that he had always hoped for, and it was mostly because of Vicki. What had started as harmless flirtation had quickly deepened, taking him completely by surprise. All his dreams, remembered and not, were finally coming to fruition.

Maybe one day she'd tell him just why things had worked out as they had. But for now, Vicki was happy to wander through their life together, learning those little foibles about one another that otherwise might have stayed hidden to them if they had just remained friends. With a tentative date set for their wedding, and the beginnings of a decision on where they would be living very shortly, she could quite honestly say things had never been so good.

((Thanks as always to Vicki's player for the above scene. Also, as a result of this scene, Jon and Vicki will be spending weekends at the big house at Maple Grove on a trial basis starting next weekend.))
