The Dewdrop Inn occupied a corner of one of Rhy'Din's many busy market squares. With summer in full swing, all the doors and windows were open, a few tables and chairs set outside on the cobbles as the weekly produce market bustled with life in all its myriad shapes. Halfings, humans, orcs, minotaurs, elves, dwarves, even a few of the infernal races were noticeable among the crowd, and among the customers of the Dewdrop itself. The inn was built to a standard size, accommodating all but the most gigantic of races, though it appeared that a small annex at the back of the building had been built to size for the owners in part. It was toward this that Nali drew Rick, all but buzzing with excitement over seeing her family, and introducing them to him.

Rick was stunned to find himself surrounded by beings both familiar and alien, some the stuff of fairy tales and some of nightmares. Thankfully, he was possessed of enough self control not to openly gape or stare, understanding now what Nali had meant when she'd said that in Rhy'Din, anything was possible.

Leading the way down an alleyway, Nali paused at a secure wooden gate that had been painted in bright greens and yellows and white, unlocking it carefully to usher Rick into a sunlit garden that was clearly tended with love. It also contained two girls, one halfling and one tiefling, who charged at Nali the moment they saw her. She laughed as she suddenly found herself with her arms full of her little sisters.

"Nali! Look what I can do!"

"No, she's going to hug me first!"

He hadn't bombarded her with questions just yet, holding off on those until they were alone. The last few days spent at the Cove were equally comforting and confusing, as he and his long-lost brother struggled to get acquainted, but he was hopeful, not only about Jack and his family, but about Nali. Rick couldn't deny that he and the diminutive blonde were getting closer, and he was almost dreading the day when he'd have to make the return trip to Dallas. But he didn't want to think about that now. Today he was meeting her family, and he wanted to make the best impression he could.

So far, he liked what he saw where her family's home was concerned, except for the fact that he was a little too tall to comfortably navigate the low ceilings without having to stoop. But he liked the bright, sunny look of the garden, and he laughed when Nali's sisters practically tackled her in a warm welcome.

Merilee, the happy little tiefling, was still in the late stages of childhood before the tweens arrived, all rounded face and huge smiles, blue hair up in pigtails that gently emphasised the horns rising from her head. Bethan, the halfling teenager, was around the same height as her little sister, but definitely older in mannerisms and speech. It didn't stop either of them from wrapping themselves around Nali and squeezing happily to see her, only to notice Rick. Both little faces went wide-eyed, first at his height and then at his looks, glancing between him and Nali with cheeky smiles.

Merilee was the one who broke the moment, skipping over to Rick and raising her hands. "You have to kiss me to say hello, because you're my new brother."

Rick was dressed inconspicuously enough in a nondescript navy blue t-shirt, jeans, and sneakers, his dark-blond hair flopping forward onto his forehead, despite his best efforts to push it away from his face.

"Ah, you must be Merilee," he said, as Nali's youngest sibling approached. "Nali's told me all about you. I have to say your name fits your demeanor," he said, ignoring her request for a kiss and her assumption that he and Nali were married.

Giggling, Merilee instead threw her arms around his waist and hugged him, whether he wanted her to or not.

"Yes, that is Merilee," Nali supplied, half-turned back toward them with one arm still wrapped around Bethan's shoulders. "And this is Bethan. Babes, this is Rick; he's a friend." More than a friend, but she wasn't going into that with her little sisters.

Bethan let her head tilt back a long way to look into Rick's eyes. "Are you a giant?" she asked, almost sounding worried.

Rick chuckled, both at the impromptu hug and her sister's question. "No, just an ordinary human," he replied. Tall, but not overly tall. He was maybe a little taller than average, but at about six feet in height, not overly tall for a human. "It's nice to meet you both," he told the girls, one of whom was still clinging to his waist. He awkwardly returned the hug, patting the girl's back, unsure how familiar he should get with a child he'd just met.

"Merilee, I know he's a handsome goliath of a man, but you don't just embrace everyone you meet," a cheerful voice rang out from the open back door of the halfling-sized house. "At the very least, you warn them first."

As Merilee giggled, releasing Rick, the owner of that voice made her way toward them - a robust blonde hobbit woman, bare feet twinkling over the grass, wiping her hands dry on her apron. She stood in front of Rick, hands on her hips. "Now just you come down here so I can get a good look at you."

Rick didn't need to be told that this little woman was Nali's mother. Despite her size, she commanded the scene with a kindly twinkle in her eyes and a smile on her face. "Yes, ma'am," he replied, letting go of Merilee and obediently bowing toward Nali's mother and offering a hand in greeting. There was the slightest hint of a drawl in the way he said 'ma'am' that hinted at his home, but it wasn't too distinct or obvious.

"You're twice my size, young man, on your knees," Rosie Dewsun told him, with a wide grin and a twinkle in her eyes that suggested she was fully aware of the innuendo implicit in what she had just told him to do.

"Mom," Nali began, but broke into a low laugh at the utterly unabashed wink her mother sent her way.

Rick's blue eyes sparkled in amusement at Nali's mother's insistence that he come down even lower to meet her gaze and submit himself to her inspection. "Is this better?" he asked, as he knelt down on one knee, like one might to a queen - this little woman being the queen of her own domain. "Do I meet your approval?" he asked, unable to hide the amusement from his face.

She looked him over with a teasingly stern look in her eyes, and nodded decidedly. "First boy Nali's ever brought home" You'll do." She grinned then, and gave him a warm hug, one small hand stroking his hair briefly before she stepped back. "Now then, I assume you have a name? Bethan, Merilee, go and winkle your father and brothers out of whatever they're doing."

He couldn't help but smirk as she proclaimed him a boy, when he was most definitely a full-grown adult man, but he didn't argue about it. Having presumably passed inspection, nonetheless, he remained where he was on one knee so that she didn't have to tilt her head too far back to meet his gaze.

"Rick Connors, ma'am," he said, introducing himself. "Nali and I are ..." He looked to Nali for help. What were they exactly"

"We're working on it," Nali supplied for him as her little sisters ran headlong into the house. She just had to hope that Isaac wasn't too deep in his studies, or that rousting wasn't going to go down well. She bent down to hug her mother, lifting the little woman right off her feet in a peal of laughter from both of them before setting her back down again.

"Oh, you ..." Rosie shook her head cheerfully, patting her hair back into place. "Well, Rick, it's lovely to meet you. You can call me Rosie."

Rick finally rose to his feet as Nali embraced her mother, stepping back a pace to give the two women room. He smiled at the obvious affection between them, and felt a brief pang at the reminder that he'd never see his own mother again.

"I'm happy to meet you, Rosie," he replied, relieved that Nali had stepped in to explain their as yet undefined relationship.

"I hear you're quite the cook," Rosie commented, waving a hand to encourage them to follow her into the house. Given that it was built for a hobbit, it was surprisingly generous with door lintels - Nali didn't have to duck, despite being two feet taller than her parents. Rick was going to have to, however.

"I know my way around a kitchen pretty well," Rick replied, frowning a little as he was faced with having to duck his head as he entered the house and remain with his shoulders stooped. It wasn't going to make for a very comfortable visit, unless he could sit. He'd certainly found his way around and made himself at home in his brother's kitchen the last few days, whipping up a few creations that garnered few complaints.

"Finally, someone else who has the same problem I do," a young male voice commented as they passed into the house, drawing the eye into the living room, where an extremely tall and lanky half-orc boy was sitting comfortably on a pile of cushions, apparently attempting his homework while fending off Merilee with one arm.

"No one's got the same problem you do, Colt," Nali informed her brother cheerfully. "You're going to be enormous, you might as well accept it." She nudged Rick. "Sit down," she suggested. "Better than getting back ache."

"This house makes me feel enormous," Rick said, sympathetic to the boy's plight. If he felt knew her parents better, he might have suggested raising the ceiling, but he was not that comfortable yet. "Howdy," he said, greeting the teenager before finding a place to sit where he wouldn't be in the way.

"Hi." Colt offered him a smile, the tusks growing up from his lower jaw just visible as he opened his mouth. "I'm Colt. You're Rick, right' Nali's new squeeze?"

"I'm still your big sister, you know," Nali pointed out in amusement.

"Nah, you're tiny," was the teenager's response.

"As opposed to Nali's old squeeze?" Rick countered, a hint of mirth in his eyes. He didn't seem too concerned about whether there was or there wasn't anyone before him. "He's got you there, Nali," he said, making himself as comfortable as he could on the floor.

"If Nali's tiny, what does that make me?" Bethan demanded from the kitchen.

"Miniscule," Colt called back without looking up from his homework.

That turned out to be a mistake - apparently halfling teenagers can move very quickly when they want to, and wrestling with a big brother more than twice her size wasn't something Bethan was afraid to do.

"Are they always like this?" Rick asked Nali, ducking so that he wouldn't get smacked by an errant flailing arm or leg. Hers was certainly a lively family, and though he was grinning in amusement, he felt that pang of grief again at what he'd missed growing up.

"Yeah, pretty much." Nali chuckled, easing herself down onto the cushioned floor beside him as Merilee reappeared, clutching a piece of paper shyly. "What's that you've got, kiddo?" The little tiefling shuffled over and whispered into her ear. Nali's smile deepened. "Well, why don't you give it to him, then" You already hugged, you're practically engaged now."

Rick arched a brow as Merilee reappeared and whispered something in her sister's ear that he couldn't quite catch. He wasn't sure what it was she wanted from him, but he was curious. "I'm not famous enough to sign autographs yet," he teased the girl.

Merilee giggled, and quite abruptly thrust out the paper in her hands toward him. "I did you a picture," she told him. On the paper in front of his face was a picture of a very tall man, and a very short blonde woman. "It's you and Nali."

"Oh, I see!" Rick said, carefully taking the paper from the girl, a serious look on his face as he looked it over. Of course, it was a child's drawing, but not half bad for an eight-year-old. It was obviously a child's rendering of himself and Nali, and he felt strangely honored that she'd felt inspired to draw them, when she'd only just met him. "It's very good. Can I keep it?" he asked.

The blue head nodded happily, a bright smile back in place. "I did it for you," the little girl said again, and abruptly skipped away toward the hallway.

"Be gentle with your brother," Rosie called after her.

Gentle with her brother" Rick thought, brows arching upwards. The brother who had been teasing the other sister" They seemed like typical siblings, despite how little he knew of siblings.

"You have a nice family," he told Nali, unsure what else to say. At least, so far they seemed nice enough to him.

"You get used to them," she assured him. "We're not always this rowdy, I promise."

"I'd hardly call us rowdy, Nali-girl," a voice interjected from yet another door, and another halfling stepped into view. This one was male, wore glasses and shoes, was possessed of a wild crop of brown curls on top of his head. He smiled at his eldest as he crossed the room.

"Yeah, we're rowdy," she insisted cheerfully. "Dad, this is Rick. Rick, this is my father, Neza."

Rick moved to his feet to meet her father, promptly bumping his head on the ceiling, forgetting he was about a foot too tall for this house. "Oof, sorry," he said, rubbing his head a moment before bending down to extend a hand to Nali's father. "A pleasure to meet you, Mr. Dewsun."

"Well, now you are a tall one, aren't you?" the merry little man said, shaking Rick's hand heartily. "Sit back down, there's no need to stand on ceremony. My name's Neza, lad, and I'd be pleased to have you use it."

"Colt's gonna be taller," Merilee announced as she reentered the room, followed with obvious reluctance by a stooping young man of the human variety, possessed of bright red hair and a shy countenance.

"Good to meet you, Neza," Rick repeated, a bit of a smirk on his face at Merilee's remark, as if it was a competition. He noticed the young man behind her and made an assumption. "You must be Isaac," he said, mirroring the younger man's posture, as he extended his hand in greeting yet again. "I thought Nali said you were away at school."

Isaac just about managed to make eye contact for a split second, quickly squeezing Rick's hand before pulling it away. "I ....go to college in the city," he offered in a quiet voice, glancing at his big sister. Her answering smile seemed to make him relax a little, a flicker of a warm look on his face before he retreated into himself again. "I live here."

"Dude, you're as friendly as a popsicle in winter," Colt offered, apparently having given up on his homework as Merilee plunked herself into his lap.

"And you're as ugly as a night stalker, but who's counting, right?" Isaac countered in a mutter, folding himself down into the nest of cushions.

"Boys," Neza warned quietly.

"Don't mind them, Rick," Rosie announced as she came back from the kitchen, weighed down with a large tray of food and drink. "They're like chalk and cheese."

Neza moved to unburden her of some of her trappings, earning himself a fond smile from his wife.

"Chalk and cheese?" Rick echoed, never having heard that analogy before. He would have offered to help if Nali's parents didn't already have things well in hand. And there was the height problem, which made moving around difficult. Instead, he returned to his place among the cushions, choosing a spot near Nali.

"What are you studying?" he asked Isaac.

"Means they rub each other up the wrong way most of the time," Nali murmured to Rick, to clarify her mother's turn of phrase. It seemed as though lunch was being served, and that this odd, picnic-style inside the living room was the norm for the family, as sandwiches and drinks were passed around to everyone.

Isaac looked startled at having been spoken to directly again, glancing a little nervously at his father for a little encouragement before he spoke. "Um, magic," he offered. "Wizardry, not - not sorcery."

"I think most siblings do that, don't they?" Rick whispered back, though he'd had no experience with siblings until he'd tracked Joe down a few years ago. He turned again to the young man, who seemed the most timid of the bunch. "What's the difference?" he asked, genuinely curious as lunch was passed around.

Isaac looked genuinely panicked at somehow having become the center of attention, but despite their mother's comment on their relationship, it was Colt who picked up on it and reacted. The half-orc teenager drew Merilee and Bethan into conversation with him about what they were going to do this afternoon, with Rosie adding her two cents every now and then, and Isaac visibly relaxed again.

"A sorcerer is born, a wizard learns," the red-haired young man told Rick a little awkwardly. "It's arcana, not divine, too."

"Oh, I see," Rick said, realizing how ignorant he was of this place, their way of life, and their customs. "And why do you want to be a wizard?" he asked, his only real point of reference the Harry Potter films.

Isaac shrugged. "It's interesting," he said, choosing that moment to stuff his face with an enormous bite of his sandwich.

Neza chuckled quietly. "My brother is a wizard," he explained to Rick. "He's taught all of us one particular spell, but Isaac clearly has a talent for it. He also has the interest and the drive to succeed. So long as it gives him enjoyment, why should he not study it?"

Rick shrugged, unsure how to answer that. Were wizards here as common as doctors back home" He wasn't sure. "What exactly does a wizard do?" he wondered aloud. "I mean, for a living?" Did wizards go around casting spells for a fee" He wasn't even really sure what wizards did for a living in the Harry Potter universe, except teach other people to become wizards.

"Most will join a group and spend their lives researching the arcana and history," Neza said thoughtfully. "Although Yanik is a part of the Governor's office - he specializes in search and rescue, regardless of the risk."

"I want to learn how to enchant objects," Isaac offered, a hint of enthusiasm in his face and voice. "You know, things that make life easier for people."

Rick took this all in, though sometimes the more answers he got, the more questions those answers posed in his mind. "Uh, like an enchanted mop?" he asked, remembering the scene from Fantasia where Mickey loses complete control of his enchantments.

"Why not?" Isaac countered. "Or runes that anyone can use. There's a lot of poverty in Rhy'Din - a lot of people don't have clean water, or even the means to heat water, and a rune is an easy thing to make. If they could fill a bath, and drop a fire rune into it to heat the water, that makes life better, right?"

"That's an amazing idea," Nali said in surprise. It seemed as though this might be the first time Isaac had mentioned a real ambition.

"No, that makes perfect sense, I guess," Rick said, furrowing his brows, but not wanting to argue. It seemed he had a lot to learn about this place called Rhy'Din. To quote Dorothy, he sure wasn't in Kansas anymore - or Texas either.

Nali gently squeezed his hand. "They don't have magic on Earth," she explained to her brother, whose expression abruptly cleared from the almost rebellious scowl he was wearing into sudden understanding.

"I can show you a spell, if you want," Isaac offered, apparently oblivious to the sudden wide-eyed shock on his father's face.

"Uh, sure," Rick replied, easily enough. He wasn't skeptical so much as curious, though he hoped Nali's brother didn't choose a spell that would do anything too excessive.

A fierce light came into Isaac's eyes, the shy young man happy to show off something he was proud to be able to do. He pulled a small piece of wood from his pocket, muttering a few words under his breath as he broke it into four pieces and tossed them into the air. At the height of their rise, they changed into four small globes of light, dancing in place near the ceiling.

Rick tilted his head, following the movement of those pieces of wood to watch them transform and dance above their heads. Was he supposed to break into applause or merely watch enraptured" He arched his brows, surprised at the young man's trick. Whether it was truly a magic spell or merely an illusion, it was still pretty impressive.

"So that's ....transmutation?" Nali asked her brother.

Isaac's smile grew. "It is!" he said, his tone alone praising her for keeping up with what he was studying.

"How long do they stay up?" Neza asked, fascinated himself.

Isaac shrugged. "As long as I concentrate on them, I guess," he answered, not entirely sure himself. "I can make them move, too." He wriggled his fingers, and the four globes danced down toward their little group, separating to dance before each of them.

But how much was he concentrating on them while he was answering his family's questions" "You could make a fortune in Vegas," Rick murmured, though he doubted that was the young man's goal. Helping the poor was a far better use of his talents than performing for an audience anyway.

"What's Vegas?" was the inevitable question, though it came from Nali, of all people. Rick was suddenly the focus of several curious pairs of eyes.

"Vegas?" Rick echoed, as if he'd just realized he'd murmured that comment aloud. "Vegas is ..." He trailed off a moment, to find the right words. "It's a city on Earth that's almost entirely dedicated to entertainment." That was about as simple a description as they were bound to get. Adult entertainment, he failed to add.

"What, like with parks and slides and zoos and fun stuff?" Merilee asked, betraying that she, at least, had been listening to the conversation on the other side of the room.

"Not exactly," Rick replied. "Other cities have those, but Vegas is mostly for adults. I mean, there are things for families to do, but it's mostly gambling casinos and shows. Magicians, singers, acrobats, stuff like that."

"It's a city of sin," Rosie said, her lips twitching in amusement as Bethan gasped in horror.

"Have you ever been to Vay-gas?" the halfling teen asked Rick, almost accusingly, as though an affirmative answer would render him unfit to date her big sister.

"I wouldn't go that far," Rick said, not wanting to argue. "I mean, they've cleaned it up a lot the last ten years or so. They're trying to make it more family friendly. It's not exactly Disneyland, but it's not Sin City either." He hadn't said whether he'd been there or not, though from his reply, it seemed he had.

As soon as he said the word Disneyland, every eye was suddenly shining, some with amusement, but some with excitement.

"There's a whole country made out of Disney?" Bethan breathed in amazement.

Merilee leapt off Colt's lap and into Rick's. "Can we go' Will you take me" Is it magic?"

Rick chuckled as he found the youngest of the Dewsun children in his lap. It was probably a good thing he hadn't mentioned Disneyworld. "No, no ....They just call it that. It's not really a land, per se. It's an amusement park. It is pretty big though!"

"But it's Disney?" Bethan asked again, leaning toward Rick with a hopeful look on her face.

"Whether it's Disney or not, darling, it's on Earth," Neza reminded her gently, his smile turning just a little sad at the disappointment that covered the two youngest girls' faces.

"Nothing saying we couldn't go to the Wonderplex, though," Nali commented mildly.

Rick frowned, realizing it would be almost impossible to take the Nali's siblings to Disneyworld without risking undue attention. They just didn't look human enough to blend into a crowd without attracting notice.

"What's the Wonderplex?" he asked, hoping to change the subject and wishing he'd never mentioned Disneyland.

"It's an amusement park," Nali told him with a smile, gently stroking Merilee's cheek as she spoke. "We haven't been there as a family yet."

Rosie and Neza exchanged a look, and Rosie smiled. "Well, then, it appears we shall have to correct that oversight," the matriarch of the little house said. "And Rick will have to come along as well, of course. He's part of this family now, too."

"I am?" Rick asked, brows arching upwards and looking from one face to another. He and Nali weren't married or even engaged yet, though it seemed their relationship was getting more serious, even after only a few days.

"The queen has spoken," Neza intoned, laughing as his wife poked his shoulder. Neither of them seemed to have noticed that Nali was wide-eyed and bright red.

"Of course you are, Rick," Rosie told him. "Some things don't need big gestures to be real, you know."

"I suppose not," Rick admitted, smiling over at Nali, as he noticed her blush. "Well, I'm game. I haven't been to an amusement park in years. What do you say, Meri?" he asked of the girl, who'd made herself comfortable on his lap.

"Can I go on the rides?" The little tiefling's disappointment had ebbed instantly with the promise of a visit to another amusement park, her bright smile back in place.

"I'm not the one to ask," Rick said, as he had no authority where she was concerned. "But I don't see much point in going to an amusement park if you aren't going to go on the rides," he was quick to add. She was young - maybe eight or nine years old - but not so young that she couldn't enjoy the rides. "What kind of rides do they have there?" he asked, finishing up his sandwich.

"Plenty of them," Neza said, absentmindedly tidying up the empty plates. "For all ages and sizes, too - it was created with Rhy'Din's diversity in mind."

Bethan perked up. "So I can go on rides, too?"

"Why couldn't you?" Rick asked, turning his gaze to the teen, before realizing she was probably worried her diminutive height would be an issue. If that was the case, he might have the opposite problem, in that he might be too tall.

"Because I'm three foot tall, and I'm probably not going to get any taller?" Bethan pointed out.

"Yeah, and I'm 6'3" and still growing," Colt told her, resting his chin on the top of her head. "I kinda think I'm the one they're going to want to keep off the rides."

Rick arched a brow. He hadn't stood side by side with Colt yet and hadn't realized the boy was already taller than him and wasn't done growing yet. "You and me both, buddy," he assured the teenager.

"Oh, don't be daft, either of you," Rosie said in a bustling sort of voice. "If those rides can take minotaurs and forest gnomes, they can take all of us. That reminds me, have you met Celia yet?"

Nali snorted with laughter. "Believe it or not, Mom, Rick hasn't actually even seen my apartment yet."

"Who's Celia?" Rick asked, looking between the two women. It was a name Nali hadn't mentioned yet, and he wasn't too sure whether she was a friend or family member or maybe even a pet.

"She's my landlady," Nali began, but Merilee beat her to the big reveal.

"She's huge, and she has horns but not like me, like cow horns, and hoofs, and she wears bows on her ears and an apron with all flowers on it," the little girl burst out.

"Combine these physical traits and extrapolate from there," Isaac murmured, displaying what seemed to be a rare sense of humor.

"Uh ..." Rick murmured, with an uncertain shrug. He was trying to imagine this Celia in his mind but the only thing that came to mind was Elsie, the old Borden Dairy cow logo.

"She's a minotaur," Nali supplied helpfully. "And she doesn't have hooves, Li-li, she just likes wearing high heels."

"Very attractive trait in a minotaur, a good height," Neza said mischievously.

"A minotaur," Rick echoed doubtfully. Either they were teasing him or he still had a lot to learn. "Like in Greek mythology," he added, remembering again what Nali had told him about this place. Was there nothing that wasn't possible here"

Nali raised a brow at his doubt. "Honey, you have a tiefling in your lap," she reminded him. "And minotaurs are a stretch for you?"

Rosie chuckled. "Well, I'm sure it won't be such a huge shock later this evening when he meets her," she said cheerfully. "That woman likes to know who's coming and going from her house."

"I suspect there might be some things that would be a stretch for you, too, if you hadn't grown up here," Rick replied, with just a hint of defensiveness. He'd only been in Rhy'Din a few days, and most of that time had been spent at the Cove, where the weirdest thing he'd seen had been Rhy'Din's twin moons.

"I know." Ignoring Merilee, who was beaming at her big sister and said sister's new "squeeze", Nali leaned close to Rick, drawing his brow to hers for a long moment. "You're doing great," she murmured to him. "And you're safe, I promise."

So far he hadn't seen anything in Rhy'Din to be afraid of, though a female minotaur might prove an imposing figure.

"I know," he assured her, with a smile. "I'm not worried." At least, not among her family, who all seemed welcoming. "So, when do we visit this Wonderplex of yours?" he asked, changing the subject yet again.

"How long are you in Rhy'Din for, Rick?" Rosie asked, shooing Colt, Bethan, and Neza out of the room to wash up in the kitchen for her. "I should think we should have a good day out soon."

"That's a good question," Rick said, looking pointedly at Nali for an answer. She'd said there was something she needed to check on before he returned, but as yet, he still didn't know what that something was.

Nali smiled back at him. "What about next Saturday?" she suggested. "Time enough to get staff to cover our shifts at the bar, right?"

Rosie considered this. "Yes, that is very doable," she agreed. "Isaac?"

The red-haired brother blinked, looking up. "Hmm' Oh. Yeah, sure."

Rick glanced curiously at Isaac, wondering what had distracted him from his thoughts, and glanced up to find the lights still dancing against the ceiling. "Maybe you should end the spell. I think you've made your point," he told the younger man, with a friendly smile.

"Hmm?" Isaac glanced up at the lights. "Oh. Sorry." He made a small gesture, and the lights snuffed out, leaving no sign they had ever been there.

"Miles away, huh?" Nali asked her brother, her voice gentler with him than it was even with the baby of the family.

Isaac shrugged self-consciously. "Maybe."

Rick might have offered an ear to Nali's brother, had he known him better, but for now, he said nothing, letting Rosa and Nali handle things. "Hey, Merilee, why don't you show me the rest of the house?" he asked, thinking maybe if he and Merilee weren't there, Isaac would be more apt to open up to his sister.

"Oh! Can I show you my room?" Merilee jumped up out of his lap, tugging on his hand excitedly. "And the playroom, and the roof, and the garden, and ..." She didn't stop babbling even as she all but dragged Rick out of the living room.

Rick chuckled as he got tugged to his feet, ducking his head so he didn't whack it again as he was physically dragged out of the room. It looked like she was going to give him the grand tour.

The house wasn't quite as cramped as it first appeared, though Neza and Rosie's bedroom had clearly been built purely for them, as had Bethan's. Isaac, Merilee, and Nali's rooms had all been built to a human scale, and Colt's had higher ceilings than all of them. It was a disparate house built for a disparate family, but still felt like a home. And, of course, by the time the tour was done, Rick was treated to the sound of Bethan practicing her flute before Nali offered him an escape.

Though he didn't say so, Rick was relieved to find that not every room of the house required him to have to duck. He was surprised to find that Nali still had a room here. Even though she had clearly moved out to live on her own, it seemed she was always welcome at home, just as he'd been when his mother was still alive. He thanked Merilee for the tour and praised Bethan on her playing before accepting Nali's offer of escape.

"Don't forget, you're coming to dinner with us on Tuesday!" were Rosie's parting words as Nali drew Rick out onto the street at last.

The bustle of the market had calmed down as the vendors packed up, the day coming to an end in the rosy glow of the afternoon. Nali looked up at Rick with a smile.

"You handled that pretty well," she told him. "Never seen Isaac open up to a stranger that fast."

"He's a quiet one," Rick said, wondering what had been eating the young man, but too polite to ask. He hoped it wasn't the fact that he was dating his big sister, if dating was even the right word to use with regard to their relationship.

"He's shy," she murmured as they walked along together. "We didn't get him until he was ten, and the circumstances of him being put into care were horrific. I think he's afraid of being seen as too different."

"Different?" Rick echoed, a little incredulously. "Why is he different' Because he was born with a talent for magic?" he asked. Of all her siblings, Isaac was probably the most like him, but mostly just because he was human.

"Okay, you cannot let him know that you know any of this, okay?" she warned, drawing in a breath. "Isaac's birth parents ....they were rich. Like, super rich with an emphasis on the super. Only it was all from illegal activities. His birth father was gunned down in front of his wife and son, all the money was taken away, and Isaac ended up living in really deep poverty. He was picked up off the street by the social care services a couple of years later; turned out his mother had been strangled during a robbery two weeks before. He'd got so used to being victimised for being that rich kid, and then that poor kid, he's never really got over being different to the people around him."

Rick arched a brow, astounded to hear Isaac's story. He'd assumed that since they'd all been adopted, each of the Dewsun siblings had a story to tell, but he hadn't expected anything quite that tragic.

"So, that kind of shit happens here, too," he murmured with a sigh, though back home Child Protective Services generally made sure the kids didn't fall through the cracks.

"Rhy'Din's not so very different, really," she mused softly. "But Isaac's always going to be a little anxious and a little awkward. I'm just glad he's found something to study that makes him light up and keeps him interested."

Rick chuckled at her remark, not because he thought it was funny, but ironic. "Are you kidding" Rhy'Din is very different," he told her. At least, from what he'd seen so far. Life at the Cove wasn't all that different, but here in the market, it was like another world - which is what it was, after all. "Anyway, I'm glad he's doing well. Stories like his are partly why I got into criminal justice."

"There are plenty of ways to make a difference to someone's life for the better," Nali mused. "Like Isaac said, even a hot bath can change someone's day and turn it around. A good meal. A smile. Rampant sex against the wall with the right person ..."

Rick smirked, at that last suggestion. "Uh huh. Have anyone in mind?" he teased, leaning close to nudge her shoulder as they strolled along, hand in hand.

She played along, drawing out her answer as though really needing to think about it. "There is this one guy," she said. "Tall, handsome, gorgeous smile. Manly in all the best ways, and gentle, too. Just a really good man. Although I think he might be in love with my little sister now."

Rick laughed, knowing she meant him. "I'll be an old man by the time Merilee grows up. I think she might have a crush on me though," he added with a smirk. Compared to her little sister, he already was an old man.

"You really think that would stop her?" Nali laughed with him, rolling her eyes. "She was never really comfortable around Suranna, but she tried. She does really like you, though."

"Why didn't she like Suranna?" Rick asked curiously, recalling the fact that Suranna had been an old girlfriend of hers. Apparently, she did not limit herself to relationships with males, though he wasn't yet sure if she limited herself to humans.

"Su didn't really like anyone who wasn't human," Nali said unhappily. "It took me way too long to work that one out. She was so careful not to say anything, or to do anything in front of me, but toward the end, she was getting more and more obvious with the way she looked down at my family."

"I see," he replied, realizing there were definite prejudices here, too. "Well, you don't have to worry about that with me," he assured her, though all of this was pretty new to him. And just why was he telling her this when he'd only known her a few days"

"I know," she said softly, looking up at him as they walked. "Like I said, you're a good man. And you handled being in a room with three halflings, a tiefling, and a half-orc like you do it every day. So I think we're definitely on the right track there."

"They're just people," Rick said with a shrug, slowly getting more accustomed to the differences between this place and Earth. "Am I taking all this too well, do you think?" he asked curiously. He'd agreed to come here, after all. Originally, he'd come here to meet his brother, but it seemed the longer he remained, the more it became about something - or someone - else.

"I think you're doing wonderfully," she told him. "Everyone is different, after all. Some people don't see race or species, other people are always looking out for it. You're doing fine, honey."

He quirked a brow at the term of endearment, which seemed to have slipped very easily from her mouth, almost as if she hadn't realized it. "I see the differences, but it's hard to be prejudiced when I have no pre-conceived notions to go by." He paused a moment as another thought occurred to him. "Why was Suranna so against non-humans?"

"If I had to guess, I'd say the way she was raised," Nali said thoughtfully. "Her grandparents came to Rhy'Din as refugees from a place where humans are persecuted. It's not a surprise that she'd have those prejudices, I just thought that maybe she'd grow out of them."

"Were things between you serious?" he asked, content to follow along at her side as she led the way to her apartment. He'd certainly had his fair share of relationships, but there had only been one who'd gotten away.

"We had about five years together," she told him quietly. "She wanted me to move in with her and sell my place, but something always held me back from doing that. Weird, how your mind protects you, isn't it?"

"That's pretty serious," Rick remarked, frowning, remembering something from his own past. "Something my mother told me once - when you marry someone, you're not only marrying them, but their entire family."

"She was right," Nali agreed warmly. "It won't ever work if your families can't even be in the same room with each other without going quiet and not speaking."

"It might work if you distance yourself from your family, but that's not really a good enough reason for that," Rick remarked. "But Jack and Jaz adore you, so I guess it's not a problem," he teased.

"Oh, Mr. Connors, are you proposing?" she teased, laughing as she turned down an avenue lined with trees.

A shadow in an alleyway to his left caught their attention. "You, you there, big one!"

The figure emerged just a little. It was about four feet tall, wore a thick green cloak with the hood pulled low, and all that was really visible of it was the rat-like muzzle and paws peeking out of the cloak. There was a moment, and it drew its cloak open, revealing a series of pockets stuffed with mushrooms.

"You want to buy sthome fungusth?"

Rick chuckled. "I think you did that already," he teased, bumping her arm again.

It wasn't quite true, but she had been shamelessly flirting with him, and it wasn't the first time one of them had mentioned marriage. The smile quickly disappeared from his face as they were accosted by something - or more accurately, someone - who looked a lot like an oversized rate in a trench coat. He looked startled even at the unexpected encounter.

"Uh, no thanks," he muttered, moving to step around the ratman.

"Okay, fair enough." The creature closed the cloak and stepped back into the shadows.

Nali rolled her eyes. "Someone really needs to talk to the kobold clans again if some of them are peddling their hallucinogens out on the public streets," she muttered.

Kobolds" Hallucinogens" Rick blinked. Maybe things weren't so different here, after all - except for the fact that it was kobolds, whatever those were, who were peddling illicit drugs here, instead of ordinary humans. He frowned, turning back around to take another look at the mushroom peddler. "You want me to talk to him?"  Even if he was DEA back home in Dallas, he held no such distinction or authority here in Rhy'Din.

"He'll just run away," she told him, shaking her head with a smile. "They're harmless, and it's not like they force people to buy or try. You saw that. They understand what no means."

"If you say so," he said with a shrug, the mushroom peddler further bursting his bubble about Rhy'Din being some kind of Paradise. This place certainly had its fair share of problems. "So, I assume you have some sort of security here to keep trouble at a minimum," he said, more statement than question.

"Well, we have the City Watch," she said, though her tone suggested that this organisation wasn't as on top of things as it could be. "But we don't really have codified laws here. Most communities police themselves, and pretty much everyone knows how to defend themselves if they have to."

"What's crime like here?" he asked further. He wasn't sure he wanted to trade one thankless job for another, were he to decide to move here, and yet, someone had to keep people safe from the criminal population.

"It depends where you are in the city," she told him. "Around here, we don't have much in the way of crime. The occasional attempt at a bag snatching, if that. Nearer the central districts, there's more pick pocketing and burglary, but the really violent stuff happens around the Docks, and sometimes around the Red Dragon Inn. It's not as bad as it sounds, I promise."

"Every city has its seedy elements," Rick allowed. "You said something before about Isaac having gone from wealth to poverty. Just how bad is it?" he asked, not really knowing much of anything about Rhy'Din or its social issues.

Nali hesitated, not entirely sure how to answer. "Most people earn enough to live comfortably without worries," she told him. "But there are a lot of people who struggle from one day to the next, and the gulf between them and the richest of our population is staggering. That isn't to say that everyone who is wealthy hordes it," she added hurriedly. "There are good people with money who do as much as they can, but ....well, pride is the main issue, really. A lot of the poor refuse to take something for nothing."

It was an old story that wasn't exclusive to Rhy'Din. There were plenty of people back home who'd fallen through the cracks or who were just too stubborn to ask for or accept help. "Then maybe someone should figure out a way that makes them feel useful, so they don't think it's just charity," he suggested, though he didn't know enough about Rhy'Din to know what could be done.

"There are a few things like that," she said, drawing him down the next street toward a row of neat, narrow, tall houses. "There's a soup kitchen my parents donate to - it's run entirely by volunteers from the lower end, and they get paid for their work with a good meal and just enough in their pocket not to piss them off."

"There must be jobs they could be given, so that they can earn money and feel productive," Rick considered, though again, he wasn't sure what kind of jobs those might be.

"I really don't know," she murmured. "I'm not in a position where I can make a difference for anyone like that." She shrugged. "It's sad, but they're good people, mostly." Pausing at the bottom of the steps up to one house's front door, Nali offered him a faint smile. "If we sneak up, Celia might not loom out to find out who you are tonight, but she will definitely be lying in wait in the morning," she warned in amusement.

"That's okay," he said with a chuckle, regarding her nosy landlady. "I'm not shy," he added, beaming a cheesy grin. "Are you upstairs or downstairs?" he asked curiously, though there was a reason he was asking.

"Upstairs." She was smiling once again, her usual smile, leading the way up the steps to the front door. "Does that make a difference?" she asked curiously, rummaging in her pocket for her keys.

"It might if your bed has squeaky springs," he pointed out, that cheeky grin still on his face, as he followed her up the porch stairs. He didn't think the remark would shock her; after all, she'd done more than her fair share of flirting.

That produced a cackle of laughter from her as she opened up the door, leading the way into a very small hallway. Two doors lead off it - one to the right, and one straight ahead - and it was to the one in front of them that Nali moved with her keys in her hand. Not quickly enough, though - the heavy clack of heels on wood made itself known from behind the door on the right, and it was thrown open, revealing an extremely tall minotaur in bright pink heels, and a pretty floral dress. Her bovine face creased into a delighted smile.

"Nali! You found one!"

Thankfully, Nali had warned him or he might have looked even more shocked than he did. She did kind of remind him a little of the Borden cow though. Instead of shrieking or bolting in hysteria, he merely smiled and extended a friendly hand to her landlady. "You must be Celia. It's a pleasure to meet you. I'm Rick."

Her hand was huge compared with his, but she was surprisingly gentle as she took his hand to shake. "Glad you got advance warning," she boomed cheerfully. "I surprise most people. Pleasure to meet you, Rick. You going to be dusting out the cobwebs between her legs tonight?"

There was a thump as Nali let her forehead hit her own door with a groan.

"I wasn't aware there were any, but I promise to do my best," he grinned back, happy to play along. "You might want to wear earplugs, if you have them," he added, though it was hard to tell if he was kidding or serious.

"Oh, darling, I had the whole place sound-proofed before she ever moved in," Celia told him cheerfully. "I like to make noise when I'm entertaining."

"And that's enough of that," Nali announced, pushing open her own door. Her hand claimed Rick's, pulling him with her onto the stairs immediately behind it. "Lovely to see you, Celia."

"Always a pleasure, Nali-girl!"

Rick got yanked along by Nali, chuckling at her obvious discomfort with the conversation. "Nice to meet you, Celia!" he called as Nali tugged him along, up the stairs. "I don't see what the problem is. She seems perfectly friendly," he teased her.

Laughing, Nali rolled her eyes, slowing as they reached the top of the stairs and an open-plan living room and kitchen set up. A door on the other side of the room stood open, showing a glimpse of a bedroom. "She's very friendly," she agreed. "She's just overly concerned with my lack of a sex life, that's all."

"Lack of a sex life or lack of a boyfriend?" Rick asked, though he wasn't too sure he fit that description or ever would. Then again, it seemed Nali wasn't particular about gender when it came to her lovers. "Or girlfriend," he added, as he took a look around.

"Celia's all about sex," she told him with a grin, moving to the fridge in the kitchen area to pull out a couple of beers. Handing one over to him, she took a sip from her own. "She, uh ....her race don't really adhere to the conventional idea of love, exactly. At least, that's what she told me."

"What does that mean exactly?" he asked curiously as he took the beer from her and twisted off the cap. He knew not everyone believed in love, and there was nothing really wrong with having sex without it, if both partners were agreeable.

"As far as I know, there are more male minotaurs than there are female," Nali said thoughtfully. "According to Celia, they don't subscribe to the family unit or the idea of sharing your life with one person. Sex is about pleasure and breeding for them, and it doesn't seem to get any deeper than that."

"And how do you feel about that?" he asked, taking a lean against the counter while he took a swig of his beer. He'd already deposited his overnight bag on a chair on their way in, assuming he was staying overnight.

She shrugged. "It's none of my business how another species approaches intimacy," she pointed out. "If it works for them, that's great. But I wouldn't be able to do that."

"I wasn't talking about another species, Nali," Rick clarified. "I was talking about you." After all, she had been shamelessly flirting with him since they'd met; some might even say teasing, but what he wanted to know was how she really felt about it. Nothing had happened last night at the Cove, but he couldn't deny that he'd like knowing she was curled up beside him.

She watched him, resting the cool bottle against her cheek for a long moment. "I know I'm a flirt," she told him honestly, her smile a little wry as she spoke. "But I wouldn't have invited you into my home if I didn't feel something for you. I wouldn't have introduced you to my family. And I wouldn't have shared your bed, either. Sleeping next to someone is almost more intimate than making love to them."

He frowned, turning serious and almost ashamed for having teased her about it. No, of course, she wouldn't have introduced him to her family, unless she had feelings for him and wanted something more than just a fling. "Sorry, I guess I'm just having trouble sorting this all out."

"What do you want, Rick?" she asked softly. "All I'm hearing as questions about my thoughts, my feelings. I don't want to walk down a road on my own, I want to walk it with you. But if you don't want to take that walk, you need to tell me."

"If you'd asked me that question a few days ago, I might have told you I wanted a career. That I was content with just that, with trying to make a difference, trying to make the world a better place. But that was before I met you, before I met my brother and his family, your family. Before I knew the world - hell, the universe - is a lot bigger than Earth," he replied, frowning uncertainly. "You know something I don't, and I have a feeling you don't want to tell me because it might change something, but how am I supposed to decide what to do if I don't know, Nali?"

She stared at him, suddenly feeling cornered by the question, not managing to look away fast enough to hide the sudden brimming of tears in her eyes. "I shouldn't tell you," she said, her voice thick as she looked down at the counter under her hands. "I wanted to ....I wanted to see if I could change it. Because if I can change it, then you don't need to know."

"Are you afraid I'm going to marry someone else?" he asked. There were so many things she could be alluding to - things that might keep them apart. He set his beer down on the counter and moved closer, so that he could tip her chin up to meet his gaze. "There's no one else, Nali. No one serious anyway. You aren't going to lose me to someone else," he assured her, leaning in to press his lips to hers, as if he could banish that fear with a kiss.

Whatever she tried to say in answer was lost in a soft sigh of sound as his lips covered hers, her body turning on instinct to curl her arms about him, melting into that kiss. She might have smiled at his assumption that she would try to prevent his marrying someone else, if only the truth was not so tragic.

He had no idea what the truth was, not even an inkling, and in that moment, it didn't seem to matter. All that mattered was that they were together, here and now. If there was a way for them to stay together, they'd find it, but for now, it didn't matter. Nothing mattered but the two of them; nothing existed but the two of them. That was what his kiss told her; that was what mattered in that moment.

The tension ebbed from her frame as he kissed her and she kissed him, pressing closer than she had dared to before now. There was so much more in her kiss than simple physical attraction; she poured her heart into him, though she knew he would likely not be comfortable to know that was what he now held. She'd make it right, somehow. She was not going to lose him.

He had no idea what she was thinking or what the future might hold. Even if she knew what was to come in his future, hadn't she already changed that by bringing him here" But he didn't want to think about that right now. All he wanted to think about was Nali and her kisses. While the tension was ebbing from her frame, for him, it was the exact opposite, as his body reacted to her kisses and closeness. Up to now, he'd been an almost perfect gentleman, but here, alone and with no one to interfere, he didn't think there was any reason to hold back any longer.

There was a faint clink as her beer bottle was set clumsily down on the counter, her hands traveling upward from his waist to slither over his shoulders and into his hair as she teetered on tiptoes. No one had ever kissed her like this, as though it meant so much more than a simple kiss. How could she possibly let this go"

He not only welcomed those kisses, but savored them, his desire for her rising with each kiss and caress, until he could barely see straight. At last, he pulled away, gasping for breath, but only momentarily before scooping her up in his arms and looking around for a bed.

"Bedroom?" he asked, though the apartment was small enough he could probably have found it without asking.

Lifted up off her feet, she wrapped her arms and legs around him, nipping affectionately at his lips even as she gasped with him. One hand waved absently toward the open doorway behind her, through which was just visible a wide double futon. Her fingers teased through his hair as she drew her lips down over his jaw, seeking out the sensitive throb of his pulse to lave with wicked warmth.

He smirked at her reaction to his question, even more impatient than he was apparently, though he had to admit, he'd kept her waiting a few days. It had taken all his self control not to give in to his needs last night, with her sleeping right next to him all night, but he'd promised to wait until they were alone, and a promise was a promise. Now, though' All bets were off. He found the bedroom and the futon, but instead of laying her down, he set her on her feet, not before taking a breath at the way she was teasing his jaw. He drew away, just a little, taking her hands in his as he met her gaze.

"Are you sure?"

She did him the courtesy of not blurting out an immediate answer, letting her eyes drag over his face slowly before she answered him.

"I'm more sure about you than I have been about anything in my life," she said, and there was the absolute sincerity that colored everything she said all over again. Her hand rose, her thumb drifting over his cheekbone. "Are you?"

Rick Connors

"I'm sure," he replied, though he wasn't quite sure what it was he was sure of.

There was no question he wanted her - that fact was hard to hide - but what else was he sure of? He had only known her a few days, and yet, somehow he could imagine spending the rest of his life with this pint-size package of sweetness. He smiled down at her, leaning in to touch another kiss to her lips, soft and sweet, while his fingers deftly worked the buttons of her dress open.

She shivered sweetly as the buttons came open, her own hands slipping beneath the hang of his t-shirt to caress her fingertips over his skin. Her mouth curved into a smile against his own as she felt the fabric covering her fall open, rolling her shoulders to let the dress drift to the floor before pushing his shirt upward. "No turning back," she whispered impishly.

"No turning back," he echoed, pulling away a moment so that he could yank his t-shirt over his head before letting his gaze appreciate the view of her in just her lovely, lacy under things which left very little to the imagination. "Has anyone ever told you how gorgeous you are?" he asked, stepping close enough to trail a finger against her bare midriff.

She opened her mouth to answer, but the words were lost in an uncontrollable giggle as she unconsciously flinched away from the ticklish touch.

"Damn, you're just uncovering all my secrets today, aren't you?" she teased, stepping close again to tug his pants open as she pressed an open-mouthed kiss over his heart.

He smirked at her question, realizing she was ticklish. "Don't worry. I won't tell," he teased back, looking amused at the way she took charge of his pants and marked him hers with a kiss. Hopefully, he didn't disappoint either. It probably came as no surprise that he was in good shape, muscles sculpted from either hard work in the gym, good genes, or both.

She definitely wouldn't kick him out of bed, if that was worrying him. In actual fact, she all but kicked him into bed, pulling his pants down to his knees and tugging his ankles out from under him so he landed on his back on the soft sheets, both of them now equally half-dressed as the other.

"You going to take advantage of my weaknesses, honey?" she asked, crawling up and over him with a teasing smile on her face.

He laughed as he found himself flat on his back on the bed and at an obvious disadvantage. "I think you might have that backwards, darlin'," he said, reaching to wind his arms around her waist, just the hint of a drawl making itself known.

She let him draw her down until she laid over him, braced on her elbows, fingers playing in and out of his hair. "I like that," she murmured, brushing the tip of her nose to his. "Darlin'."

"Not too cliché?" he asked, all too aware of the way she was toying with his hair, not to mention the fact that she was half naked. He was having a hard time keeping his eyes focused on her face, rather than roaming over the lush curves of her body. She might come in a small package, but she was still all woman.

She shook her head, the corners of her eyes crinkling as she smiled all over again. "No one's ever called me darlin' like that," she pointed out affectionately. "I like it."

"I'll have to remember that," he told her, smiling as his hands, if not his eyes, started to wander, leaving her waist to grab hold of her rear. His smile turned playful, a mischievous gleam in his blue eyes, as he gave her backside a squeeze.

She giggled in response, pressing her lips to his as she shifted over him, one hand beginning to trail her fingers down over his arm, his side, flicking the waist of his boxers as playfully as he squeezed her rear end.

He smirked against her lips, amused at her playfulness and relieved she was as playful in bed as she was out of it. Some women took sex too seriously, while he thought it should be fun. If she was observant, she'd notice how his body was reacting to hers in a favorable way, confirming the fact that he wanted her as much as she wanted him. He gave her rear one last squeeze before his hands trailed upwards to unhook her bra.

Oh, she had definitely noticed. And it was good to know that he could relax into the silly side of love making for her, as well - he was oddly stern most of the time, yet that smile of his was breathtaking, and the fun he let out from time to time made her heart sing. If they couldn't have fun together doing this, they couldn't have proper fun any other time, in her opinion. The gentle release of the clasp at her back made her arch, just a little, in response, her hands leaving him one at a time to remove the lace bra from between them with an unabashed moan at the sensation of skin to skin.

It wasn't so much that he was stern, as he was a little confused by this whole situation, especially where she was concerned. There was a lot to think about, but right now, he didn't want to think at all. He smiled at the moan he'd elicited from her, without having done anything at all, but unhook her bra. Now, though, his hands were even more eager to roam - eager to touch her, to kiss her, to explore every inch of her, and he started with most obvious place first, his hands leading the exploration but quickly followed by his lips.

His hands were not the only ones to roam, nor were his lips, but there was as much fun in that give and take as there was desire. This was no rushed, lustful affair, nor could it be called a truly romantic sharing of tenderness. It was something in-between, the kind of joining most pairings did not find until they had known one another a long time. Another reason to believe that there could be more to this than one simple visit to another dimension.

It wasn't that he couldn't be romantic, but the pair had been flirting back and forth almost from their meeting, and in a way, this just seemed like the obvious culmination of all that flirtation. He wasn't the type to say too much about his feelings, but if his actions were anything to go by, he was at the very least enjoying her company and certainly enjoying the latest romp. He was secretly hoping this wasn't just another fling, but there was something holding him back from saying so. Instead, he let his actions speak for him, his kisses and caresses both tender and passionate, his body eager for hers. He wasn't the kind of lover who needed to always be in control, just as happy to take as well as give.

It felt good, to be intimate without heavy expectations, to be hopeful without certainty. Nali felt safe with Rick; safe enough to let go and still be herself even as their bodies merged, still flirting even as they moved together, trading kisses back and forth that said far more than their lips would allow.

An unselfish lover, Rick took his cues from Nali, gauging her responses to his kisses and caresses, to the way their bodies responded to each other. Unlike some men, he was just as concerned with her needs and desires as he was with his own, and he made sure those needs were tended to before his own. He was experienced enough not only to know what most women wanted, but to know how to give it.

And skilled enough that she saw stars more than once before finally collapsing into his arms, nestling delightfully close in the last rays of the sunset through the window. "Never letting you go now," she murmured, her tone deliciously lazy and mischievous. "You're mine."

Wrapped in her embrace, feeling lazy and content, he smiled at her remark. "Be careful what you wish for, Nali," he said, a teasing gleam in his eyes. He didn't think he'd mind so much belonging to her, if it wasn't for the fact that his life was back on Earth, decades in her past.

"Why, are you a genie in disguise?" she asked, lifting her head to meet his gaze with a grin of her own. "Is this the part where you trick me into wishing out loud that you were mine, and you magic yourself into a cage that only I can open?"

He chuckled at her analogy. "That's not what you really want though, is it?" he asked, his fingers trailing against her back as he held her close, reluctant to let go, almost as if he was afraid of losing her.

"No," she agreed softly, resting her head down once again. Green eyes held his gaze, impossibly tender as her fingers stroked his chest, over his heart. "I love you," she said simply. "And sometimes it's true what they say ....that if you love someone, you should let them go, and if they come back, then it was worth it."

One brow quirked upwards briefly at her declaration of love. He knew she liked him. He had even come to realize that in the short amount of time they'd been together, he was quickly developing feelings for her he hadn't felt in a very long time, but he hadn't expected her to speak of love - not yet.

"Nali ..." he started, his voice softening with unexpected emotion, as he held her close, but then he was smiling, warmly and affectionately. "I think the saying goes, if you love something, let it go. If it comes back to you, it's yours forever. Are you worried I won't come back?"

She nodded, her cheek rubbing against his skin as she pressed into his arms. "I'm frightened," she whispered. "I'm so frightened that ....that I might never see you again after you go home. That's why I need to check something. I need to be sure about it before I can tell you."

He said nothing for a long moment, as if he was considering her words, or maybe considering his own future. He wasn't sure why, but sometimes the dark of night made honesty easier. It wasn't quite dark yet, but it was well on the way to becoming night. "There's nothing stopping us from being together, Nali." Nothing but time and distance, and with the help of the Nexus, those were not insurmountable obstacles. "You have family here. Your life is here," he pointed out. By that same argument, he had family here, too, but he hadn't quite realized that yet.

"You have family here," she murmured in reply, drawing in a slow breath as she forced herself to relax against him once again. "I'm sorry. I-I don't mean to be a downer, or to put pressure on you. Whatever you decide, it has to be your decision and no one else's."

He smiled at the reminder, remembering Jack. Even if Jack was a little on the quiet side, they were brothers; they were the only family each other had left, and Rick knew their mother would want them to be friends. "You're right, but what I mean is, you have more to keep you here than I have to keep me there," he said, letting her make of that what she would.

She gasped, surprised that he would already be so open to this discussion. Her head lifted, her eyes seeking his in the dimming light. "Are you ....are you really thinking of coming here" For good?"

He might have shrugged, if not for the fact that she was settled against his shoulder and chest. "Only thing I have back home is my job," he admitted, and just how attached was he to that' It was stressful and dangerous, and he'd only gotten into law enforcement because of his father. "There are a few things I need to tie up back home, but there's nothing really keeping me there."

Even in the dim light, her smile shone, relief setting her alight as she wriggled upward to kiss him once, twice, peppering his lips and cheeks and nose with delighted kisses. She would still need to make sure that he wasn't going to die, of course, but that was doable. And it was less stressful now he was seriously considering coming here to be with his family. With her.

He couldn't help but laugh at the way she was rewarding him with kisses. "I take it you like that answer." That much was obvious. "Maybe you'd like to reward me a different way," he suggested, waggling his brows at her playfully.

She giggled, wriggling just a little more until she was straddling him once again, leaning down until her lips just barely brushed his. "And what would you like for your reward, darlin'?"

"What are you willing to give me, darlin'?" he countered. If he had to guess, he thought she'd be willing to give him most anything, not excepting her heart. He wasn't a demanding lover, nor was he difficult to please, but he was curious how far she might be willing to go to please him.

"How about we start with ....a home with me, and go from there?" she suggested sweetly, the tip of her nose brushing his as she spoke. She couldn't remember ever having been this comfortable with anyone, comfortable enough to forget they were naked together while still enjoying that intimacy.

He chuckled again. "Not quite what I had in mind, but that works. What do you think your landlady will have to say about that?" he asked, amused at the way she brushed her nose to his. He'd been thinking about a more immediate reward, but if they were going to be together, they'd have to sort out living arrangements sooner or later. "I just have one condition ....maybe two."

"Well, if she has a problem, we can always find somewhere else," was Nali's practical solution, gently nipping kisses to his lips as she thought about it. "What are your conditions?"

"I'm not sure you'll like it," he warned her, though there was a gleam in his eyes that told her he was only teasing. His fingers slid gently up and down her back in caress of her spine, while his lips tended to her kisses.

"Mmm?" His caresses earned a tender shiver that followed the line of his fingers against her spine, a closer fitting of her body to his as her hand slid up to gently gather a handful of his hair and tilt his head just enough that she could claim a decidedly fiery kiss.

He smiled into her kiss, obviously pleased by the reaction his caress elicited in her. He still hadn't given her his conditions, but she didn't seem to care and neither of them seemed in any hurry. The kiss only further ignited his desire, distracting him from answering her question.

There was plenty of time for answers. They had all night ....and more, if they truly wished it.
