Cosmo, at least, seemed happy to see them, and Johnny was just as happy to see the silly dog, who he'd somehow allowed himself to get attached to. He'd been thinking about getting one of his own, but he wasn't sure he was really ready to take care of a dog on a full-time basis, and so his visits with Jon and Vicki's dog were that much more special. It really seemed like the dog was talking Johnny for a walk, rather than the other way around, but after an hour or so, they were back at the main house, dog looking happy and Johnny looking frazzled.

"Have you seen all the refugees moving in around here?" He'd had no idea what was going on at Maple Grove, until he'd seen it for himself. Refugees wasn't really an accurate term, but Johnny tended to blurt whatever popped into his head without worrying too much about being politically correct.

"They're not refugees, love," Liv told him gently, more than a little out of breath from the effort of keeping up with Johnny and Cosmo as the collie had all but run them both ragged to let off steam. "There's trouble brewing in the Old Temple District - a few deaths, a couple of kids got attacked, that sort of thing. Apparently Caroline opened up the empty houses in the Grove for anyone who wanted to vacate the district while the trouble's ongoing." She shrugged, leaning down to firmly pat Cosmo's rear end as the dog barged in between them.

"I heard a little about that," Johnny admitted with a frown. He'd have to be living beneath a rock not to have heard about it, but he didn't know all of the details. A lot had been going on lately, and he wasn't all that good at keeping up, but there had been a few suspicious fires about town lately, and arson had been suspected. Thankfully, no one had been hurt in them yet, and Johnny hoped it stayed that way. But that wasn't why there were at Maple Grove. This was a happy occasion and they were there to visit the newest member of the Granger Clan. He stepped out of the way as Cosmo flew up the stairs in front of them, as if it was his personal duty to lead them inside and show off his new charge.

"Well, to be honest, the only reason I know about it is because Jon called me when Caroline decided to open up the doors," Liv confessed with a shrug, undoing her coat as they followed the excitable dog inside. She was just a little bit nervous about seeing the new baby; being Jon's P.A. had somehow gotten her a phone-call on the precious family list to announce the birth before it appeared in the papers, and though she was excited, she was also a little wary. She'd never been around a newborn before.

The only baby Johnny had ever been around was his nephew Franklin who'd just made his entry into the world in January, and neither he nor Liv had felt too terribly comfortable with the baby. It was no big secret that Johnny was fond of kids, but babies were another matter. Part of it was his own secret wish for him and Liv to start a family of their own, and though they were in no hurry, patience wasn't one of Johnny's strong points. "Sometimes I really don't understand this place," he commented dryly as he followed Cosmo up the stairs, pulling open the door for both dog and fiancee.

She laughed quietly, knocking on the door as she stepped through in warning to the new parents inside that Cosmo had company. "Neither do I, but they pay my salary, so I don't ask questions," she said, none too quietly, pausing inside the door to wait for Johnny to join her.

Vicki was on diaper duty as Cosmo bounded inside, muttering laughingly down at baby Emily as the infant squirmed, ignoring the threat to cry at the cold slather of cream all over her skin. She glanced up at their visitors, tired but smiling. "Well, look who the dog dragged in."

"No, I mean..." Johnny trailed off as he followed Liv inside. He didn't mean he didn't understand Maple Grove or the people who lived there. It was Rhy'Din that confused him sometimes, but he supposed no matter where you lived, there were always going to be problems. No place was perfect, and as weird as Rhy'Din was, it was slowly becoming home. Johnny glanced from Vicki to the wriggling baby, looking just a teensy bit nervous.

"Honey!" A male voice called from one of the rooms nearby. "Is that Liv and Johnny?" Jon called, working on fixing a tray of tea and biscuits for the foursome.

"Unless my dad's suddenly learned how to shape-shift, yes," Vicki called back to her husband, pausing in the middle of her greeting to swoop down suddenly and blow a loud raspberry on Emily's exposed tummy. The baby girl gurgled, kicking out as the sensation tickled, distracted long enough for her mother to get her back into her onesie with relative ease. The redhead looked over at their friends once again as she lifted Emily up to her shoulder, carefully cupping her hand to the back of the wobbly little head. "You can come in, you know," she told Johnny and Liv with a smile. "She doesn't even have teeth yet, so biting isn't a danger."

Liv laughed a little nervously herself, her hand tangling with Johnny's where they both lingered in the doorway. She looked up at her fiance as if to say, "After you?, shy of approaching even when invited.

Johnny gratefully linked his fingers with Liv's, feeling a case of nervous jitters coming on. Even after all the things he'd faced in his life, all the dangers, the bad guys, the dragons, everything, why was he so nervous of one teensy baby' He knew he'd better get over it quick before they decided to have one of their own. He flashed a look back at Liv as if to say, "Thanks a lot," but led the way inside toward the dreaded little bundle of joy.

Jon made his way back from wherever he was carrying a silver tray laden with the tea fixings, smiling broadly even though he looked more than a little weary. "Have you said hello yet?" he asked as he greeted their guests. "Isn't she beautiful?" he gushed, like the proud Papa that he was.

Glancing between Johnny and Liv, Vicki felt a smirk touch her lips. As jealous as she was of letting anyone but Jon hold Emily, this was just too good an opportunity to pass up. Turning away from the changing table, she gave the Human Torch a prod in the chest. "Here you go, kiddo, mind the head." And she handed him her daughter, just to see the reaction.

Liv, on the other hand, had turned her attention to Jon as he came in, her nervous smile a little more relaxed as she took in the exhausted pride on her friend and employer's face. "With you two for parents, she was never going to be a troll," she pointed out shyly, her hand releasing Johnny's as the little bundle of squirming baby was handed off to him.

"What"!" Johnny exclaimed, a stunned look on his face as he suddenly found a small wriggling bundle thrust into his arms. "No, I can't, I..." But it was too late, and it seemed Vicki wasn't taking no for an answer. He suddenly had a panicked look on his face, but he couldn't just hand her back or drop her, forced to cradle the small bundle whether he wanted to or not. "I, uh..." He glanced down at the baby, his heart melting, even if he was a nervous wreck.

Watching, Jonathan only chuckled at the superhero's reaction and turned his attention to pouring tea. "We did good, that's for sure."

"Sit," Vicki suggested to Johnny, pointing at the couch beside him as she grinned at his stunned reaction. "Drop her and face the wrath of the Grangers."

Relieved that she hadn't been the focus of Vicki's somewhat cruel but funny joke, Liv dared to giggle softly, casting an apologetic look to Johnny before she turned her eyes back to Jon. "How are you finding it, so far?" she asked softly. "You don't seem as tired as I was expecting."

Johnny's eyes widened, though he was thankfully not visibly shaking. If the baby liked warmth, she was, at least, getting plenty of that, as heat seeped into her from her close proximity to the walking furnace. He took Vicki's advice and backed up to settle himself on the couch, afraid to move lest he drop her. Gulp.

Jon was still smiling, looking pretty happy and relaxed for a guy who hadn't gotten much sleep in the last few days. A load had been lifted from his shoulders the minute he'd gotten that call that his older brother had woken and that they were hopeful he was going to make it. He was then free to throw himself into being a good husband and father and not worry over the rest of his family or his career for a while. He shrugged his shoulders lightly, as if it wasn't a big deal. "I'm tired, but it's a good kind of tired." He didn't really feel the need to explain what a bad kind of tired was. They knew enough about his past to fill in the blanks there.

Liv smiled faintly, perching nervously on the edge of the couch beside Johnny, not daring to look at the precious little bundle he held in his hands so awkwardly as she spoke with Jon. "It was a good idea to ask us to keep Cosmo busy on his walks for a while, then," she approved quietly. "Although between them, I think Johnny and your dog are going to run me into the ground."

Chuckling at Johnny's somewhat terrified expression, Vicki had perched herself on the arm of the couch as she watched the Human Torch endeavor to relax a little. Emily apparently thoroughly approved of the warm body holding onto her, stretching out her limbs for a moment before relaxing, falling easily back to sleep with a gentle smack of her lips. "There now, see?" Vicki smirked faintly. "She likes you."

"She's..." Johnny faltered. "She's beautiful," he said at last, in complete agreement, apparently, with his companions. Of course, parents were always more than a little biased when it came to their own child, but Johnny had to admit that Jon and Vicki had created the most beautiful little creature he'd ever seen. He was in love.

Jon poured out the tea, making Vicki's and his own just the way they liked it, his sweet with lots of cream. As tired as he was, he looked like he was about ready to burst with pride at Johnny's praise of their daughter. He could see that his daughter was already charming the men around here and she wasn't even a week old yet. "Maybe you'll have one of your own someday," he said with a smile.

Vicki's own smile was at least as wide as Jon's when Johnny passed comment on their little girl, taking her tea cup into her hands. She exchanged a look over the rim with Jon, warm and brimming over with pride.

Beside Johnny, Liv finally got her courage together to lean into his side, looking down at the tiny baby cradled so carefully in her fiance's hands. A very small smile erupted on her face, one trembling finger reaching out to stroke the little rosy cheek. "She's enchanting," she added her own praise to the compliments, glancing up at Johnny as Jon smiled his way through a prophecy of their own future. "Maybe we will."

Johnny exchanged looks with Liv as Jon practically suggested they have one of their own, but they weren't even married yet, and having a baby wasn't quite the same thing as having, oh, say, a puppy. "Maybe, someday," he replied, looking back at the baby, flushing just a little.

Jon noticed the other couple's reaction, remembering when having a baby was the furthest thing from his mind. It wasn't all that long ago, after all. A lot had happened over the last few years, and Jon couldn't be happier. He crossed his arms against his chest as he exchanged looks with Vicki, remembering themselves when they were still dating, meeting her father for the first time, a soft smile on his face. "It'll happen when it happens," he said, taking a lean the side of the chair where Vicki was sitting.

As though sensing the nerves in the room seeming to calm themselves, Cosmo clambered up onto the couch on the other side of Johnny, settling himself down proprietorially next to the Human Torch and his precious handful, as though declaring Emily as belonging to him. Liv giggled softly at the sight of the dog looking reprovingly at her for daring to touch the baby, drawing her hand back. Her eyes met Johnny's, soft hope written in her gaze that someday they would be the proud parents showing off their newborn baby to their friends. Someday.

Across from them, Vicki leaned into Jon's side, her blue eyes lifting to look up at her husband with a tired, tender smile. Emily had been a surprise for them, but she had a feeling that Johnny and Liv already had their lives planned out. It was only too easy to imagine Johnny surrounded by a passel of small people, adoringly calling him Daddy. "Mmm, I'm willing to bet you'll have so many, you'll start feeling like a vending machine, Liv."

Jon's arm wound its way affectionately around his wife as she leaned into him. He saw how tired she was and felt a little of the same, the excitement and adrenaline the only thing keeping them both awake. He knew this first visit needed to be short, so that Vicki, at least, could rest before the baby made her middle of the night demands. "Twins run in families, don't they?" Jon asked, helpfully, or maybe not so helpfully.

If only Johnny knew what Vicki was thinking, he'd tell her how wrong she was, how he had no idea what was in store, how he was fumbling through life and just doing the best he could. His eyes widened a little at Jon's remark and he looked back at the small needy bundle in his arms. "I don't even know what to do with one of them. What would we do with two?"

"Panic?" Vicki suggested with a low chuckle, sipping from her tea cup to suppress the yawn that wanted to rise up. As much as she wanted to stay awake, the lack of sleep was beginning to catch up with her now, every opportunity taken to get a couple of hours here and there just so she didn't doze off in the midst of feeding their daughter.

Liv blushed at Jon's suggestion that twins were a distinct possibility for herself and Johnny, relieved when Johnny brought up the same concern that instantly flashed through her mind. "One thing at a time, I think," she offered up softly. "We should get married first." But her eyes strayed back to the tiny baby girl in Johnny's arms, coveting the new life and how happy Jon and Vicki seemed to be parents.

"Maybe Lucy and Steve will save us from twins," Johnny remarked with a smile, not that twins would be a bad thing necessarily. Twice the trouble, twice the fun. Two little Livvies might not be so bad, but he wasn't quite sure about two little Johnnys.

Jon knew his wife well enough to know she was getting sleepy. Short visits, Humphrey had suggested. This wasn't the time to entertain. "If you two don't mind, I need to tuck my wife in for a nap. Can you wait here for a few minutes" I'll be right back." And yes, he was planning on leaving them with both Cosmo and the baby. He turned to Vicki, taking the cup from her hand. "Time for bed. You've been up long enough."

Liv's jaw dropped for a moment, her lips parting as she stared up at Johnny. "She would have told us if they were expecting twins, wouldn't she?" she asked, a little bemused at the thought of Lucy handling not one, but two little people. Steve, she could see having little or no problem there, but Lucy'

Vicki rolled her eyes up at Jon as he took her cup away from her, this time failing to stifle the yawn at all as she smiled ruefully over at the couple curled protectively around her daughter. "Looks like General Granger is laying down the law," she teased her husband fondly, lifting her hand to wriggle her fingers in a goodbye to the pair who had come to visit. "I'll see you another time."

Jon chuckled at his wife's teasing reproach as he moved from his lean to set the tea cup down and take his wife's arm to help her from the chair. The gentleman in him was showing, and if it was any hint at what kind of father he'd make, there was little doubt Emily was going to be a Daddy's girl.

Johnny smirked at Liv, but before he could reply, there was that look of panic again as Vicki seemed ready to take her leave of them. She was taking the baby with her, right"

Drawn up from her seat, Vicki grinned at the look in Johnny's eyes, exchanging a downright evil glance with Jon. Reaching out, she ruffled Johnny's hair, gently stroking Emily's nose. "See you later, baby girl," she murmured, adding just for kicks, "You too, Emily."

Liv, despite the minor flare of panic on her end at the thought of being left alone with the baby, couldn't help snickering a little at Vicki's leave-taking. The redhead had definitely adopted Johnny as a kind of little brother.

Johnny scowled, but he really couldn't get mad or stay mad for long, especially at Vicki's good-natured teasing.

Jon didn't seem to mind. He knew his place in Vicki's life was secure, and he simply waited to collect and escort his wife to bed. He couldn't help teasing a little himself though as he tossed back, "Diapers are on the table if you need them."

Johnny gawked again. Diapers" What"

Vicki's laugh was audible, if a little muffled, as she tucked herself under Jon's arm, letting him lead her from the room. It would have been nice to stay and watch Johnny freak out over the prospect of changing a diaper or giving Emily a bottle, but she was tired. She could enjoy it next time.

Beside Johnny, Liv had gone very still, her wide brown eyes lowering to look accusingly at the baby in her fiance's arms. "Don't you dare poop or pee," she informed the sleeping Emily softly. "We came to visit, not get a crash course in baby."

Jon chuckled as he led Vicki from the room, trusting the other couple with their baby. Nothing bad would happen, after all, while Cosmo was standing guard.

"Poop or pee?" Johnny echoed, not really wanting to deal with waste products of any kind, not even those of a very cute, very adorable little baby girl. Until he was ready and had one of their own, that is. Anyway, he suspected he and Liv would get enough crash course lessons when little Stucy was born. "You....you don't want one yet, do you?" he asked, unsure how Liv felt about the prospect, unsure how he himself felt.

The look he got in return for that uncertain question was wide-eyed enough to answer it without words. Liv was pretty sure she could barely look after herself, much less a baby right now. "Not ....not yet," she admitted with a gentle stutter. "Unless ....do you want one yet?" Beside Johnny, Cosmo had lifted his head as the door to the bedroom closed, peering at the friends left with his new puppy warily. One hint toward any funny business, and the collie would pounce.

"I, um...." Johnny stammered, looking from his fiance to her boss's baby, uncertainly. She was beautiful and adorable....and small and needy and helpless and frail and a million other words that scared the hell out of him. It will happen when it happens, Jon had said. And when it happened, he'd be ready for it, but it was probably better to do things in the right order. "I think maybe we should get married first," he replied, tentatively.

The rush of breath that exploded from Liv was reassurance that it was exactly the right answer. "Oh, thank goodness," she sighed with deep relief. "I was so worried that you might really want to start as soon as possible. I mean ....Well, I'm really not ready for that much responsibility." Says the woman entirely responsible for Jonathan Granger's public persona and his continued career on Earth and Rhy'Din.

"No, I..." Johnny seemed to relax a little, too. Just because everyone around them was having babies didn't mean they had to. At least, not yet. Not until they were ready. "I was worried maybe you might want to." He paused, smiling down at the sleeping angel in his arms. "She is cute."

It was more of a relief to see Johnny relax with her, deeply grateful that he was just as unprepared for that next huge step as she was. "I thought maybe I did," she confessed quietly, resting her cheek against his warm shoulder as she dared to reach over to Emily once again, gasping in delighted surprise when a tiny hand uncurled to wrap tight around her fingertip. "Gosh, what a grip ....When Lucy told me she was pregnant, I thought I might be a bit broody. But, um, no; I think I was just jealous. She's never made any plans or taken things one day at a time, and everything just happens for her, you know?"

Johnny looked over at Liv, brows furrowing as he listened to what she was telling him or trying to tell him. "Livvie, you don't have to do things the same way as Lucy. There's no right or wrong. When we're ready, it will happen. I'm not in any hurry. I love you, but before we start a family, I want us both to be ready." Then again, who was ever ready really' Were Steve and Lucy even ready? Time would tell.

She tore her gaze from the little hand holding on so tightly to her finger, meeting Johnny's eyes with the soft smile that was his to enjoy. "I know," she promised him. "It's just hard not to feel like I'm always playing catch up, you know" Not that I want to hurry and get there first, but you must know what I mean." Her smile turned a little wry; he did, after all, have a big sister himself.

He knew exactly how she felt. Sue had always done everything first. She'd been the perfect firstborn daughter, and he'd been the rebellious kid brother. For a while, he'd thought he couldn't do anything right, but then he'd met Liv. "I want so many things, Liv," Johnny admitted quietly as he adjusted his hold on the small bundle. As tiny as she was, his arms ached after holding her in the exact same position for any length of time. "I want us to get married. I want to give you the wedding you've always wanted. I want you to meet your brother and....get to know him. I want us to live our own lives and make our own choices. I don't want to raise a family in a condo. I want us to have a home. And maybe a dog or a cat. I want everything I didn't have, couldn't have as a kid. Does that sound too corny?" he asked, frowning uncertainly.

She shook her head, smiling tenderly. "No, it's not corny at all," she promised him, wondering why he was wriggling about. Had Emily pooped" "I want those things, too. The wedding, the home, the practice of having a dog or cat." She deliberately didn't mention the brother; Liv had yet to truly come to terms with that, especially since there had been no word from New York about whether or not Tony wanted anything to do with his half-sisters. She was trying not to think about it, so it wouldn't hurt. "We both missed out on so much when we were little," she said quietly, stroking her fingertips against his hairline fondly. "It would be nice to be able to get it right for our kids."

He smiled as she seemed to understand precisely what it was he'd been trying to say. No more mistakes, no screw ups. Their children, when they had children, weren't going to have to suffer the same things they'd suffered. Everything was going to be perfect, or so he hoped. He leaned close, his arms tightening around the bundle in his arms just a little, the baby contently soaking up Johnny's warmth, so content in fact that an odor suddenly rose up from her than was less than pleasant. Johnny brushed a kiss against Liv's cheek, wrinkling his nose as that odor reached him. "Is that you?" he asked, almost hoping it was.

Sarcasm didn't usually come to Liv's lips, but that question was just asking for it. She pinned Johnny with a raised brow, her lips quirked into a lopsided smirk, and said, "Why, were you hoping it was me so you can change my nappy?" One finger pointed at the culprit, who was going to start complaining pretty soon. "She's the guilty party. And it's probably your fault, because you're ridiculously easy to relax around." Liv's smile warmed as she teased her fiance, fully intending to sit back and watch him struggle for a bit.

"My fault?" he echoed, eyes widening. "I'm not the one who had the baby burrito!" He quickly remembered himself and the baby in his arms and lowered his voice to a whisper. "What are we supposed to do now?" He looked a little bit lost and wished Jon or Vicki would get back here soon. As cute as she was, she didn't smell so cute at the moment.

"Um ..." As much as Liv might have wanted to make Johnny suffer a little bit - because he was adorable when he panicked - she couldn't really countenance leaving a baby in a pooey nappy just for that. She sighed as she realized she was going to have to step up - two weeks of working at a daycare center during her break between Lelah and Jon were apparently about to be put to the test. "I, uh ....I suppose we should change her?" she suggested warily. "Where did Jon say the nappies were?"

"On the table?" he asked, swinging a glance around, which was hard to do with a baby in his arms, especially one who was starting to feel a little gooey. He wrinkled his nose again. Though he was willing to help, he really had no idea how to change a baby's diaper. "You change her," he said, attempting to hand the baby off, albeit carefully.

The sight of Liv taking a baby was certainly one never to be forgotten. The wide eyes, the panicked grimace, the very careful placing of her hands - with the baby held as far away from her as possible - it was a shame Johnny didn't have a camera on hand, really. And to cap it all, Emily was starting to wake up. Sharing a worried grimace with her fiance, Liv bit the bullet and stood up, moving over to lay the teeny girl on the changing table, one hand on her tummy as she rummaged around for a nappy, cream, and wipes. "Oh, now, you shush," she told the wriggling little girl as the first threat of a scream made itself known. "Your dad will crucify me."

Johnny got up and followed Liv to the changing table, peering curiously over her shoulder, despite the smell. He reached around to pick up a little fuzzy toy of some sort that made a rattly sound when he shook it. "Emmy," he singsonged, trying to distract the baby from the ill temper that was threatening. "Shh, no crying," he cooed as he leaned, shaking the silly toy to get her attention. Behind them, Cosmo barked a single warning. If they didn't do something soon, they were going to have both a screaming baby and a barking dog on their hands.

"Oh, don't you start, too," was Liv's response to Cosmo's warning, envisioning a collie trying to tell them off for making the baby cry while Jon and Vicki came bursting in to rescue their little darling from the two bumbling imbeciles they'd left her with. Still, distraction seemed to work, quieting the threat of wailing as the little blue eyes crossed in an attempt to focus on the toy Johnny was waving around. With a confidence she was hoping no one could see through to the shaky terror beneath, Liv quickly unbuttoned the onesie and pulled Emily's legs free, easing it up to begin the frankly disgusting process of changing a dirty diaper.

Johnny was watching all this with rapt attention, impressed by what seemed like Liv's expert diaper changing. "And you say you're not ready," he teased with a smirk, as he lowered the toy and leaned over to brush a soothingly warm fingers against the baby's cheek, humming some random tune which wasn't a lullabye and was slightly off key, but the baby didn't seem to notice or care. "She has her father's eyes," he said, noticing it for the first time as the baby peered up at the bumbling duo.

"We can give this one back when we're done." Liv snorted with laughter, folding up the dirty nappy into a neat little bundle and dropping it into the bin nearby before sliding the clean one underneath Emily's squirming backside, averting her eyes from the ugly remnant of umbilical cord even as she dumped a load of powder onto it. Johnny's comment on the baby's eyes made her look up at the little face, which was trying very hard to focus on Johnny's face now. "You know, um ....most babies have blue eyes when they're born," she offered up from something she'd read years ago. "But Jon and Vicki both have blue eyes, don't they' I don't think she's going to change."

"Well, how am I supposed to know if they're Jon's or Vicki's" They're both blue!" Johnny pointed out. He stroked the little one's cheek gently, in hopes of soothing her with his warm caress. "What do you think our baby would look like?" he asked, curiously, wondering now, imagining a mini-Liv or a mini-Johnny.

"Before or after they spontaneously combust and burn off the nappy?" Liv asked with a faint smile, nudging him teasingly as she wiped the excess cream from her fingers onto the clean diaper and set about taping Emily securely back into the thing. She glanced toward the bedroom door, wondering why Jon and Vicki hadn't come out to see what they were doing to the baby. "I don't know. Every baby is different. But big blue eyes would be nice. Just like their dad."

"They're not going to..." Johnny started, trailing off to chew on his lower lip. Actually, he wasn't quite sure if they would or not. It hadn't quite been determined yet whether his so-called gifts were his alone or could be passed down to the next generation. Thus far, baby Franklin had exhibited no extraordinary abilities, other than for inheriting Reed's ability to put Johnny to sleep, but it was probably too soon to tell. "Brown eyes are nice, too," he remarked, being somewhat biased to brown eyes. "Especially if it's a girl."

Liv smiled, hearing the implied compliment with a little thrill as she looked over at him, fingers popping the buttons on the onesie back together again. "You'll be a great dad," she told him fondly, ignoring the fussing coming from the table for a moment as she kissed his cheek. "When we get there." After a moment's hesitation, she scooped Emily up off the table and laid her against her shoulder, patting the freshly changed backside for something to do.

Johnny set the toy down, frowning a little worriedly at Liv as she scooped the baby up. "Maybe. I don't know." He knew Liv would be a great mom, but he wasn't so sure about himself. He was pretty sure about Lucy and Steve. They were perfect. They seemed to do everything right. He idly rolled the toy back and forth, a bit nervously. "We should probably pick a date, you know," he said without looking at her. He'd been meaning to bring it up ever since he'd proposed but didn't want to push her.

She bit her lip, absentmindedly rocking the baby as a pair of gummy lips explored her neck with a distinctly slimy sensation. "I didn't want to mention it," she admitted quietly. "I didn't want to put any pressure on you before you were ready, you know, because ....well, you seem so intense about having enough money for a big wedding, and that takes time to get together." She brushed close, not daring to take either hand off the baby as she touched a kiss to his lips. "Don't worry so much, love. But wouldn't it be lovely to have a summer wedding?"

"A summer wedding?" he echoed, arching brow as her lips parted from his. "You mean like a wedding on the beach during sunset?" It did sound romantic, so long as they were far enough from the waves that he didn't get wet. "It doesn't have to be a big wedding, Liv. I just thought that's what you wanted."

"Yeah, something like that," she smiled, startled but pleased to find that Johnny was on the same page as she was. "I don't need a huge wedding, Johnny. I just ....I'm still sort of stuck on the fairytale, you know? White dress, family, romantic setting, all that. But it doesn't mean I need to have the whole world and his mother there, too." She paused, an interestingly disgusted expression crossing her back. "And I have spit-up rolling down my neck."

"I'm not exactly a prince, Liv," Johnny pointed out, chuckling a little at the spit-up comment. "Here, I'll take her," he volunteered, reaching for the baby. She seemed to like his warmth, and he'd held her once already without much fuss, so he was willing to give it another go. "I think we've been abandoned," he smirked, with a glance in the direction that Jon and Vicki had disappeared. "Wanna bet they fell asleep?" he asked, wondering if that made them babysitters for the afternoon.

Strange, that the nervousness that had infected both of them so much in the presence of the parents had all but evaporated after one diaper change. Maybe they were readier than they thought. Liv was happy to hand the baby to Johnny, though, her eyes straying to the little fridge and bottle warmer on the dresser with a sense of relief. If Emily needed feeding, they weren't going to have to crash into the bedroom and wake up the grumpy mummy. Wiping her neck dry with a cloth, she laid it over Johnny's shoulder, smirking with him at the quiet assumption he was making. "Can you blame them' Even Mr Granger looks tired, and he's not even directly involved." Mr Granger being Humphrey, of course. Liv was still scared of the Old Man.

"Yeah, but..." Johnny frowned, having heard the bad news about Jon's brother via Liv. She was, after all, Jon's personal assistant and knew just about everything that was going on in his life. "It's been a long couple of days for them." What with a new baby and running back and forth to the hospital. He settled the baby against his shoulder, rubbing her back gently, his warmth seeping into her little body. He was like a walking hot water bottle.

Liv paused, a slightly sneaky look on her face as she glanced toward the bedroom door again. "You know, if we manage to keep her happy for a couple of hours while they sleep ....we might be able to bump Kaylee off the top of the babysitting list," she pointed out with a mischievous smile. Yes, being responsible for a baby was a scary thought, but they could give this one back after a few hours. Besides, Emily was very cute.

"Is that a challenge?" Johnny asked with a grin. He might not be all that good with babies, but they had to start somewhere, and he was always up for a challenge. Tell him he couldn't do something, and come hell or high water - well, maybe not high water - he'd do his best to prove you wrong. "They look exhausted. I have no plans for the afternoon. Do you?"

The bolder side of Liv was actually finding the idea of stealing Kaylee's spot as exclusive babysitter genuinely appealing, as evidenced by the decidedly cheeky cast of her smile as she winked at Johnny. "Aside from Cosmo's walk this afternoon ....nope," she admitted with a smirk. "Maybe just a couple of hours this time," she added, thinking of the barely jealous flash in Vicki's eyes as she'd handed over her precious newborn in the first place. "And we have Nana over there keeping a beady eye, anyway." Cosmo raised one brow as he picked up on the gesture in his direction, apparently satisfied for now that the visitors weren't upsetting the puppy.

"Nana?" Johnny laughed at the reference. He'd never read Peter Pan, but he'd seen the Disney version on TV. "Who in their right mind has a dog for a...." He cut himself off as Cosmo picked his head up and pointedly looked in Johnny's direction. "Okay, never mind. Anyway..." He paced the floor slowly as he patted the baby's back. "I think I have the touch." Whatever that meant. He'd heard it used by other people in reference to someone who was good with babies. Emily wasn't complaining anyway.

"You cheat," was Liv's automatic response, grinning as she said it. "You're a walking hot blanket. I bet you'll be her favorite person as she gets older, after the sleeping beauties, of course." She cast around the room once again, wondering when the last time was that Emily had been fed. There wasn't any clue as to when that had been, but hopefully they'd be able to guess if she decided she was hungry before Jon and Vicki got up again.

Johnny laughed at Liv's remark. "Me" I doubt it. Why would I be her favorite person' It'll probably be her Dad. He's gonna spoil her to death. Cosmo is proof of that!" He retook his seat on the couch, carefully shifting the baby from his shoulder to rest in the crook of his arm. "Think we'll spoil ours like that someday?" he asked, looking down at the tiny bundle as Liv looked around the room.

"Definitely," she giggled softly, flipping the television on as she passed by on her way to the couch. It was quiet, evidence that the parents had been watching with their newborn. Cosmo yawned as Liv stepped past him to settle on the couch beside Johnny, toeing off her boots to curl her legs beneath her. "You're a sucker for the big eyes routine."

"I've only got eyes for you now," he smiled over at her as she curled up beside him, his heat radiating into both Olivia and their little charge. He glanced over his shoulder at Cosmo, smirking in amusement. "I wonder who's babysitting who," he remarked quietly aside to Liv.

She glanced over at the collie, who still hadn't taken his eyes off them as they tended to his new puppy. "Ever get the feeling he doesn't trust us?" she laughed softly in return, her gaze snapping to Emily as the tiny girl stretched in Johnny's arms, turning her head toward his chest. Ah, so not fed so recently then, she found herself thinking with a smirk as the little mouth opened, rooting against Johnny's chest for a nipple.

"Constantly," Johnny replied, adding, "Except when he's wanting something." The dog actually seemed rather fond of Johnny, so long as he was being taken for a walk or chasing a ball or being given a treat or scratched behind the ears. Johnny was equally fond of Cosmo, but both knew Jon was his real master. Johnny turned his head back to the baby whose little bow lips seemed to be searching for something he didn't have. "Uh, Liv" I don't think I have the right equipment for this."

"And you think I do?" was his fiancee's response to that uncertain comment, but she'd already noted the location of bottles and equipment. "Hang on, Betty Boop, let me get a bottle warmed up. And, no," she added as she rose from the seat, smiling down at him, "you don't know what temperature to heat it to, and I think Jon might actually kill us if we accidentally scald the inside of his daughter's mouth."

"What?" Johnny snapped, but there was no anger in his voice. "I didn't say anything!" He might have been about to, but she cut him off at the pass. He couldn't help adding, "It would be faster if you let me do it," but the baby seemed in no great hurry. She was content for the moment to search Johnny's chest for a non-existent nipple. He turned his attention toward her and smiled. "You are a cutie pie, aren't you, EmilyWemily' I bet you're going to break a lot of hearts someday, just like your Daddy." It seemed odd to put it that way, but he had a feeling it was probably true. Jon was a movie star, after all. His likeness probably hung on hundreds, maybe thousands of teenage girls' walls, especially now that 50 Shades... was a smash success.

Liv couldn't help laughing at that appalling bastardization of the baby's name, choosing not to comment on it. After all, she hadn't mentioned that there was now an Emergency Room Granger in the family, so EmilyWemily probably wasn't too bad, really. Pulling a bottle out of the fridge, she inspected the warmer for a moment before inserting it and turning the thing on. "God, can you imagine just how Scary Dad Jon's going to be when she's old enough to have boyfriends?"

"I can imagine how Scary Dad I'd be." For perhaps the first time in his life, he felt almost relieved that they didn't have to worry about that. No parents to approve or disapprove or try to control their lives. No father to have to meet, no mother to have to impress. Just an older sister on each side who only wanted them to be happy. And an older brother that might or might not want to be part of the twins' lives. "If we ever have a daughter, she's going to be a nun," he declared, matter-of-factly. Either that or he was going to escort her on every date with every boy she ever met.

"Uh-huh." Liv didn't sound convinced, smirking as she leaned against the dresser, arms folded over her stomach as she watched him with the baby. "And the second she gives you the big eyes and the pout, you'll fold, and we'll be grandparents within the year," she predicted impishly, just to see the reaction. She had a feeling that, of the two of them, she was more likely to be the evil parent than Johnny was.

"What' No! That's what birth control is..." Wait, that implied that his daughter - their daughter - was going to have premarital sex, which he was going to make sure she wasn't. Even though he and Liv were clearly living in sin, but then Johnny was twenty-five years old. He was no pimply teenager. He had, in fact, never been pimply. A teenager, yes, with several girls chasing him. He remembered the first time he'd....No, he banished that thought from his head. His daughter was not having sex until she was at least thirty. Johnny got very quiet as his mind turned on all these thoughts, before a certain little person's smacking lips drew him back. He watched as she screwed her face up, working up to a little mewling cry. "Livvie, you better hurry!" he warned.

"Mmhmm. Something tells me that is a conversation I will be having with any daughters we have," his fiancee giggled softly, glancing down at the bottle warmer as he warned her ahead of time. "I can't exactly convince the machine to hurry it up, sweetheart," she pointed out. "Try distracting her for a bit."

"How am I supposed to do that?" he asked, a hint of Johnny Storm panic in his voice. "Um..." She had sort of liked his singing, hadn't she" That was worth a try. He got to his feet, instinct taking over, rocking her gently in his arms, to and fro, as he sang soft and lo, the first song that popped into his head. His voice was a little off-key, but at least he got points for the effort. "The long and winding road that leads to your door will never disappear; I've seen that road before it always leads me here; Leads me to your door..."

It was rather charming to see Johnny dancing around with a baby who was going to give up on being fascinated with his slightly off-key voice sooner rather than later. Liv found herself suddenly quite close to tears, touched by the sight of a man who'd been terrified of his own nephew settling into soothing their friend's new daughter with ease. Even if he was singing one of those songs she couldn't stand. Turning to the warmer as it dinged, she turned it off, lifting the bottle out to dry it and check the temperature of the milk on her hand. "Okay," she croaked, clearing her throat to chase the threat of mushy tears away. "Okay, we're ready."

Johnny was completely ignorant of the threat of Liv's tears, a little bit lost in the moment as he practiced at being a Daddy. He knew this wasn't their child. Their child would be different, he thought, but no less beautiful. More beautiful because he or she was theirs. They'd get there someday, he promised himself. He'd give Liv everything she wanted and then some, no matter what. He didn't realize she was feeling emotional at all until the crack in her voice gave her away, and he broke off his crooning, lifting his head to look over at the woman he loved with a curiously pointed gaze. "You okay?" he asked, as he turned to face her with the baby in his arms.

The smile she gave him was a little watery, but genuine. "I'm having a mushy moment," she confessed, moving to join him with the warm bottle. "It's just ....You look really natural with her. It suits you." She reached over to tweak his nose fondly, and Emily erupted into a demanding wail.

"I do?" he asked, brows lifting in surprise. Him natural with a baby' She felt good in his arms, warm and soft and needy, but he had no sooner lost himself in the spell when Emily broke it, letting them in no uncertain terms that she was hungry and she was hungry now. He blinked as his nose was tweaked and he went to hand the baby off to Liv, unsure which of them was to accomplish this next task.

"Lucky me," was Liv's quiet complaint as she found herself with an armful of noisy baby. "Goodness me, little madam, what a ridiculous amount of noise when everything's right here!" After a bit of a struggle, the cap of the bottle went flying off across the room, and Liv introduced Emily to her milk, carefully lowering herself to sit down on the couch with a relieved sigh. "I hope we didn't wake them up."

Johnny snorted, unworried if they woke Jon and Vicki up. They were, after all, the baby's parents. "You know what I think, Liv?" he asked, as he went to find the bottle cap that had gone flying across the room. His voice sounded muffled a moment as he bent down to retrieve it from under a chair. "I think we were hoodwinked, that's what I think," he said, not waiting for her reply. "I think they planned on us babysitting all along. After all, you are his assistant."

"What, you don't think they would have just handed her over with a bag if that was the plan?" she asked with a half-smile, grateful that he'd gone looking for the cap. And grateful that Cosmo hadn't decided to tell on them by waking up his master and complaining that someone else was feeding the puppy. "This is Vicki we're talking about, you know. She's not one for subterfuge." She glanced down at a strangely dry sucking sound coming from the teat of the bottle, and found that Emily had sucked it flat and was still sucking. "Hey, silly girl, that's not going to work," she chuckled softly, taking the opportunity to adjust her arm onto the big cushion beside herself as she broke the air-tight seal the baby had made in her own mouth.

"No, I guess not," Johnny replied thoughtfully as he came up for air, his hand closed around the found cap. He'd only been kidding, after all, but he wondered how long the other couple might expect them to remain on duty. It wasn't as if they had any plans for the day. It just felt a little strange that they'd been trusted in such a way, or that he'd been trusted. No one had ever really given him that kind of trust back home. It was his turn to watch while Liv took her turn tending the baby. As nervous as they both were, she seemed as natural with Emily as he had, both of them relaxing now that they were no longer being watched by anyone but the dog. It felt strangely domestic to be here, and he got a small sense of what it was like to live here at Maple Grove, with family close by, a beloved dog, a wife, a child. Johnny felt a twinge of jealousy, not because he wanted Jon's life exactly, but because he wanted all those things, too, and knew he'd never have all of them.

Perhaps not never. There was a nebulous agreement between the Torch and his shy fiancee that Rhy'Din wasn't going to be forever, and though she hadn't mentioned it to him, Liv was pretty sure when they eventually chose to return to Earth, they would settle in New York. Near Sue and Reed, and Lucy and Steve. And, of course, they'd already told each other that a pet was the next logical step. Make sure they could keep an animal alive, in good health, and happy, before even considering trying it with a baby. "This feels so strange," she said suddenly, looking up at Johnny with her soft half-smile. "Not bad, exactly, just ....strange. Different." There was a pause, and she added, "Don't let me forget to add babysitting onto my invoice at the end of the month."

"You should add it to your resume, too," he remarked, the spell broken, his thoughts drifting away. Part of him missed New York. New York was home, but there was a part of him that belonged here, too. He'd made a few friends here, Vicki and Jon among them. What would happen when and if they left' Would they missed or forgotten" Were they missed or forgotten back home" He felt his mood turning, and he didn't want that, didn't want Liv to know how homesick he felt sometimes. He needed this time in Rhy'Din to find himself, to figure out who he was and what he wanted, to learn to live his own life without Sue and Reed constantly telling him what to do. It was strange, yes. Different. But it was all part of life, and at twenty-five years old, Johnny Storm was finally growing up.

Liv laughed quietly, so wrapped up in the tiny baby in her arms that she had missed the dip in his mood. A grumble from Emily's stomach made her frown thoughtfully, before some half-remembered bit of advice from years ago came back to her. Drawing the bottle from between the little girl's lips, she shifted the baby gently up onto her shoulder, rubbing her back in circular motions for a moment or two before patting her softly. Soft brown eyes turned toward Johnny once again. "What do you think, should we finish this, put her down to sleep, and run for it?"

Liv's voice drew Johnny back out of his reverie once again, and he turned to watch her with the baby, smiling softly as she put Emily on her shoulder and rubbed her back, that strange sense of longing prickling at his heart again. "I think we should finish, then tuck her into bed with her parents. You've amazing with her," he remarked, watching from where he stood, with the retrieved bottle cap in his hand.

"For an hour or two, maybe," Liv smiled a little ruefully, snorting with laughter as a resounding burp made itself known by her ear. She was enjoying being able to play mum for a little bit, secure in the knowledge that she could give the baby back if anything went weird. "Do you want to finish the feed?" she asked her fiance, her smile turning inviting as she offered him the bottle.

"Um..." Johnny's gaze slid uncertainly to the baby on Liv's shoulder. "You seem to be doing fine. I'm content to watch." He fidgeted with the bottle cap in his hand, until he nearly dropped it, feeling suddenly awkward or something, though he wasn't sure why. It wasn't the baby that was making him feel that way exactly, but the feeling of uncertainty about his and Liv's future. "You think we worry too much?" he asked, setting the cap on a table and setting it spinning.

"I know I do," she admitted freely, but then, worrying was a way of life for Liv. She worried about everyone and everything, which was why she was so good at her job and, if she let herself think about it, so good at being what Johnny seemed to need. She lifted a free hand, crooking a finger to invite him over. "Come here and help, at least. It's not as scary as it looks."

He frowned at her, but couldn't tell her no, gaze shifting again from Liv to the baby on her shoulder. Would they ever be as lucky as Steve and Lucy or Jon and Vicki" Everything seemed to have come easy to Steve and Lucy, though he knew that wasn't really true. Still, they'd taken a chance, leaping without looking, while Johnny and Liv seemed to agonize over every decision. What had happened to him that he'd become so careful lately' He left the cap on the table, a finger tracing the table edge before he found his way back to the couch and took a seat beside Liv. "Do you think anyone is ever really ready to be a parent?"

For some reason, that question brought blaring to mind the parents she'd never known; the mother who had died, and the father who hadn't tried hard enough. Liv cast her eyes down to Emily, trying to cover her moment of tumultuous confusion by handing the tiny girl to Johnny. "Here," she handed him the bottle. "Um, move it around a little bit every so often, so she doesn't suck the teat dry." As she settled herself by his side, draping the spit up cloth over his shoulder, she reflected quietly on his query. "I don't know," she admitted softly. "Some people, it just all seems to come so easily to them. And then there's other people who can't cope with it at all. I don't know what makes the difference."

He held his arms out to collect the baby from her, furrowing his brows at her instruction, unsure how he was supposed to do that, but so long as she was there with him, they'd figure it out. The baby seemed content anyway, so that was something, and if things got out of hand, he'd just bang on the bedroom door until he got an answer. "Like Steve and Lucy, you mean," he remarked, regarding the former. He didn't think they fell in the latter distinction, but were somewhere in between, or so he hoped. "I envy them sometimes," he admitted as he turned his eyes back to the bundle in his arms and coaxed her into opening her little bird mouth so he could give her the rest of the bottle.

"Like Steve and Lucy," Liv agreed softly. "It just seems like they got everything without any of the heartache or upset. And we both know that's wrong, because Lucy was a wreck before she went to New York, it's just ....Yeah, I'm jealous. Not of her being with Steve," she hurried to add, knowing Johnny had a bad habit of comparing himself to his hero. "Just how quickly everything sort of fell into place for her. Married and a job she loves and expecting a baby, all in the space of a few months. And then you look at me, and I don't know. I love my job, I love you. Maybe I'm a bad influence on you. Instead of me getting more impulsive, you're starting to over-analyze everything the way I do, and that's not a good way to be. Take it from someone who knows."

"I'm not over-analyzing," he said, frowning, watching as the baby greedily sucked away at the bottle. "Okay, maybe I am a little. I just..." He sighed. "I don't know." It wasn't that he was unsure about being with Liv; it was more that he was worried she was unsure about being with him. "Sue says I'm too impulsive, reckless, that I don't think. I don't know what I'm afraid of, Liv. I guess I just want to make sure you don't regret it."

"Sue says?" she repeated very gently. It had taken him a long time to break her of the habit of "Lucy says"; perhaps it was time she should do the same for him. "I don't regret anything to do with you, Johnny. None of it, even the painful start. And I don't want you to change because you think you should, because you think people expect you to. I love you, not the perfect little brother you keep trying to conform to for Sue. Without your impulsiveness, I would still be a boring nothing who doesn't know how to have fun. I certainly wouldn't have learned how to growl." She smiled, brushing a kiss to his cheek as her hand descended to the bottle, wrapping her fingers about his to gently tilt the teat in the baby's mouth with a telltale sucking noise. "I get scared sometimes," she confessed quietly, "that I'm too quiet for you. But I know I'm getting better, and that's because of you."

Johnny arched a brow at her as she helped him with the bottle, but the look of surprise on his face was really more due to her quietly-admitted confession. "Quiet' You're not too quiet. You're perfect. I'm the one with the big mouth and the impulsive personality. Sue says I'm my own worst enemy, and she's right. Like the other day at the shower. What if you hadn't come home when you did" What then" I'd have had to steal some clothes or something. It was just stupid. I'm always doing stupid things like that. If we're gonna have a family, I can't do that anymore. I have to be responsible. I have to think things through."

Releasing his hand, Liv met his eyes with a gentle smile, his smile. "You're perfect to me," she told him softly. "I think the big stuff comes when you have to think about it, when you've got a little person or whatever in your life. I think you'll be a great dad, but I know you'll be an amazing husband. I feel very blessed that you'll be my husband."

Johnny felt something break inside him, shatter like glass, tears prickling at the back of his eyes as he struggled to contain his emotions. No one had ever believed in him the way Liv did, not even his sister, and as much as he loved her, that fact alone made him love her even more. "Then....why are we waiting?" he asked, tears in his voice. "I love you, Livvie, and I'm not gonna change my mind about that." He almost forgot about the little bundle in his arms until he felt tiny fingers brush his and Liv's, as if to remind them she was still there.

"Because I'm a worrywart," she told him, her smile warming as she leaned close to kiss him, jumping a little as tiny fingers brushed over hers to grip Johnny's forefinger tight. She laughed a little, looking down at a baby who appeared to have contentedly eaten her fill and was about to drop off again. "You need to burp her before she falls asleep, or she'll get wind," she told Johnny softly, brushing the tip of her nose to his. "And I need to make a phone call. I'll be ....be right back."

Johnny sniffled to gather his composure and nodded his head, smiling through the tears he was trying hard not to let Olivia see. He couldn't really do anything but obey her orders, as he was being held hostage by the hungry little girl on his lap. He wasn't sure what she was up to, but he assumed it probably had something to do with her job. "I'm not going anywhere," he replied, as he Eskimo kissed her back.

"If you did, you'd be hunted down until you gave Emily back," Liv chuckled softly, rising to her feet. She bent to pull her phone out of her bag, and slipped from the room into the hallway outside, staring down at the display with nervous eyes. A moment later, she was listening to the ringing at the other end, smiling in relief as a familiar voice answered. "Hey, it's me ....I have a favor to ask ..."

As if Cosmo sensed that Johnny needed company, he lifted his head curiously, before getting up and padding up to hop up on the couch beside the Torch and the new "puppy". "At least you don't have to worry about making these decisions. You just eat, sleep, and play. No worries, no decisions," Johnny said to the dog, whose ears lifted curiously at one of his favorite humans. Johnny turned back to Emily, furrowing his brows as he tried to sort out how to get the nipple out of her mouth before she started sucking on air.

From the hallway came the sound of Liv speaking quietly into her phone, the door open just enough to offer a glimpse of her as she paced back and forth in her tights on the polished floor. She seemed excited - not nervous or worried, but truly excited about something - a feeling that lasted as she hung up the phone and slipped back inside, wearing a grin that seemed to be in danger of eating her nose.

By the time she got back, Johnny had Emily on his shoulder and was gently patting her back to coax a few burps out of her, her eyes dropping closed sleepily, soaking up his warmth, while Cosmo rested his head against Johnny's lap, doing the same. Johnny seemed to have things well in hand, two burps elicited from the little one before she started drifting off. He looked up Liv rejoined him, arching a brow at the grin on her face. "You're up to something," he said, knowing her a little too well.

She utterly failed to wipe the grin off her face, but her eyes snapped wide as innocently as possible. "Only a little something," she attempted to appear ingenuous through the secretive mischief radiating from her. "And it's a surprise, so no poking for more information, okay' Do as you're told for once, and it'll be awesome." She stuck her tongue out at him in the midst of doing that silly impression of him, and knelt on the couch, reaching over to scratch Cosmo's ears fondly.

Johnny eyed her suspiciously. He knew her well enough to know something was up, but he wasn't quite sure what. He smiled as a thought came to mind, which might not be even close to what she was planning, but one could hope. "I know! You bought a French Maid costume! Or....Oh! Are we going for ice cream?" he asked, hopefully, thinking only of those things that brought him immediate gratification, a silly grin on his face.

She offered him a secretive smile, although it was a pretty good bet that now they'd be going for ice cream since he'd put the idea in her head. "I'm not telling," she told him with a soft laugh. "You'll just have to wait and see. It'll take maybe a week to sort out, so you're going to have to be patient."

"You know what this place needs" It needs Dippin' Dots. They're like little balls of ice cream that melt on your tongue." He would have demonstrated but his hands were too busy burping a baby. "They take longer to melt than regular ice cream." The grin faded a little as she hinted that the surprise wasn't going to happen for another week yet. "Oh, it's not ice cream then." He pouted. Maybe she was adopting a dog"

"Well, I'll have to see what I can do about fulfilling the immediate desire, then," she grinned, leaning over to kiss his brow. "Stop pouting, anyone would think I just stepped on your pet gerbil." She winked teasingly at him, leaning into the back of the couch to take a look at the baby girl sleeping on his shoulder. "I think she's all done in for now, you know."

"I don't have a pet gerbil," he pointed out helpfully, his brow smoothing out at her kiss. And he wasn't sure he really wanted one either. A dog was another matter. He couldn't really see himself having a cat, unless it was Catwoman. "Is she?" he asked, almost forgetting about the baby who was resting against his shoulder. He glanced down at her, smiling warmly, lowering his voice. "I think she's asleep."

Liv smiled fondly, pleased to see that her little subterfuge had already pulled Johnny out of his dip in mood, and would hopefully keep him guessing until she had all the details sorted. "So, do you want to risk the wrath of the sleeping parents, or wait until they wake up?" she asked softly, glancing toward the closed bedroom door. There was no doubt by now - Jon and Vicki were definitely asleep themselves.

"What if they sleep for another eight hours?" Johnny asked, with a worried frown. As much as he enjoyed playing babysitter, he didn't really want to spend all day doing it, not now that the possibility of ice cream was on the day's to-do list. Besides, they had to eat and sleep sometime, too. He glanced thoughtfully at the bedroom. "Should we sneak her into bed" But what if they're....you know..." Cosmo lifted his head and glanced toward the bedroom, as if he was reading Johnny's mind.

Liv looked absolutely horrified at the thought that had wandered through Johnny's mind. "Three days after she gave birth?" she asked in a vaguely disgusted voice. "That's ....Johnny, you do know women bleed for at least three weeks after giving birth, right' As well as, you know, being more than a bit loose and, well ....knackered."

He made a face, not really having known that, but now he did. "Yeah, of course, I knew that," he replied, in an attempt to cover-up his ignorance. "But that doesn't mean they aren't....you know....naked....or....um..." He frowned, trailing off. "Why don't you go take a peek and I'll wait here with the baby?"

"I'm not going to peek in on my boss and his wife!" Liv laughed softly, shaking her head. What if they were canoodling" "Send Cosmo, he can warn them ahead of time."

"Cosmo will wake them," Johnny replied. He thought it might be better if they snuck the baby into bed and then snuck out, but maybe they should let someone know they were leaving first. Maybe sending Cosmo in was the better idea. They wouldn't get angry at him, would they' "Okay, you send him in. I've got the baby!" He smiled up at her, using the baby as an excuse again; besides, Jon was her boss. He was just along for the ride.

Rolling her eyes, Liv sucked it up with a sigh. "Fine, I'll go," she muttered, sticking her tongue out at him with a faint smirk. "If I'm horribly murdered for waking one of them up, you know who to blame." Smirking, she moved to the bedroom door, leaving Cosmo where he was, and gently knocked before turning the handle, calling softly through the gap to the sleeping couple in the room beyond. "Jon' Vicki?"

Johnny smiled smugly, and why not' He had charmed the little Granger, Liv had a surprise in store for him, and they were going for ice cream. Life didn't get much better than this, even if not long ago, he was feeling moody. Cosmo watched from the couch, too lazy to get up, and too busy guarding his charge. No movement came from inside the bedroom, but a muffled grunt from Jon, both of them exhausted and out like a light.

Pausing in the doorway, Liv looked over her shoulder at Johnny, gesturing for him to join her. "Bring her in," she told him quietly. "Her basket is by the bed." She knocked again, a little more sharply, and called to the half of the couple that had stirred as she ventured further inside. "Jon' Wake up a moment, it's Liv." Beside the sleeping actor, his wife didn't even stir, apparently even more exhausted than he was, despite her refusal to admit it.

Jon pried one bleary eye open. He'd been awake off and on except for a few brief naps for a couple of days now and it was starting to catch up with him. Thankfully, he and Vicki were completely clothed, having passed out cold in bed, without having meant to. Realizing what had happened, he rolled over, carefully and quietly so as not to wake Vicki. "Sh*t, Liv. I'm sorry," he whispered. "I didn't mean to fall asleep." He shoved a hand through his hair as he rolled to his feet, just as Johnny peeked a head in the doorway, with Emily contentedly asleep in his arms.

"Don't be sorry," his assistant told him with a gentle smile, waving a hand to make him get back into bed. Her voice was deliberately soft, to avoid disturbing Vicki, who did nothing more than roll over as Jon got up. "You obviously need it. We changed her, and she just had a bottle. We were going to put her down in here before we go." She glanced over her shoulder at Johnny, crooking a finger for him to come in.

"What time is it?" Jon asked, through a yawn, as he sat back down on the bed, gently so as not to disturb Vicki.

Johnny peered warily into the room as if to see if the coast was clear. He didn't want to see anything he wasn't supposed to. He pushed the door open and stepped inside, looking around for the baby basket, Emily cradled in his arms and Cosmo at his heels.

"About half past eleven," Liv told him quietly. "We'll come back this afternoon and run Cosmo ragged for you." She bent to pick up the Moses basket, moving it over to the little stand beside the bed and securing it there.

"We will?" Johnny asked, before noticing Vicki asleep on the bed. "Oh..." He lowered his voice as he made his way toward Liv and the basket with the baby in his arms. "After ice cream," he said with a smile. He leaned over to settle the little bundle in the bed, unsure if he should lay her on her side or her tummy or what, hoping Liv would make any necessary adjustments. "Do you want us to bring you anything back?" he asked as he slid his arms from the baby and settled her on her tummy. It felt just a little weird to be inside the couple's private domain, even if it was for a good reason, and as far as he was concerned, the sooner they left, the better.

Jon seemed satisfied that the pair had things well in hand and tried to hide another yawn behind a hand. "No, it's okay. Humphrey keeps us well fed."

Vicki groaned a little in her sleep when Johnny first spoke, one arm flailing to grab a pillow and pull it over her head in a startling display of grumpy from the usually cheerful redhead. Liv snorted softly to herself, waiting until Johnny had stepped back before very gently turning Emily onto her back, tucking the light blanket over her as she sighed loudly in her sleep. "Okay," she nodded to Jon, stepping back with her fiance. "Go back to sleep, we'll see you later."

Johnny glanced at the groaning Vicki and smirked a little, wondering briefly what Liv would be like in her place. "Goodnight, Sleeping Beauty," he whispered, as he crept from the room, waiting at the door for Liv to join him. Cosmo took his usual place in the corner, on guard until his master and mistress awoke.

"Thanks," Jon replied, peeking over at his daughter to make sure all was well, before tucking himself back in beside Vicki to catch as many winks as Emily would allow.

"Anytime," Liv whispered with a faint grin. "At least until she starts talking back." Her hand wriggled fingers at Jon in a wave goodbye, dropping to pet Cosmo as she slipped past Johnny and out into the sitting room beyond, starting the hunt for her boots.

No other sound came from the bedroom, the pair dropping off to sleep again as quickly as before, taking advantage of the short respite. If Jon was smart, he'd start taking turns with Vicki, swapping baby duty, instead of insisting on joining her. Johnny closed the door behind them and tiptoed his way back to the sitting room to gather up their things and be on their way. "Think we just got bumped to the top of the babysitter list?" he asked with a smile.

Liv chuckled quietly, shrugging into her coat before sliding on her boots, remembering that it was still chilly outside, even if it did seem a little warm in here. "I hope so," she smiled back to Johnny, making no effort to disguise the hope in her eyes. It had been fun, playing at being a parent, even if it had only been for an hour or so."

"We did good, huh?" he asked as he moved over to help her with her coat. Let it not be said that Johnny Storm could not be a gentleman from time to time. He'd brought a light jacket of his own and already had it on, not really needing much to keep him warm. Keeping dry was another matter.

"I think we did, yes," she agreed, practically beaming with the success of their unexpected opportunity to prove to themselves that they could actually survive being in charge of a little person all on their own. "And now ....ice cream."

"Yes!" he exclaimed with a grin and a fist pump, making an effort to keep his voice down. "You ever been to Coney Island?" he asked as he started toward the door that led to the hallway. "They have the best hotdogs on the planet and all the ice cream you want." It was no big secret that Johnny liked amusement parks. He'd taken her to the Wonderplex several times, but it wasn't quite the same as home.

The last time he'd asked her that, he had thought she was Lucy. Liv snickered softly to herself as she slipped past, remembering how much she'd teased him that day before things had gone downhill with the revelation of the twins' cruel deception. "No, I've never been to Coney Island," she reminded him with a grin, snagging his hand in hers as she passed into the hallway and closed the door behind them. "Until last year, I'd never even been to America."

"I've never been to England," he countered, as he linked his fingers to hers and started down the hall to the stairs. Though it was true he could probably fly there, he'd never tried flying quite that far and certainly not over such a large body of water as the ocean. If he happened to run into a rain storm, he'd be screwed. The only way he could do it would be to fly above the clouds, and that took a lot of energy. "Maybe you can take me there someday."

"Oh, I will," she promised him, squeezing her fingers through his. He would have to come with her when she screwed her courage to the sticking place and found the will to visit her mother's aunt, still alive in England, but an old woman now. Lucy and Steve had already made plans to visit themselves, but Liv had cried off joining them. She wanted Johnny there when it happened. "We'll just have to find the right portal. Although it does rain a lot in England, even in summer. You may not like it much."

"I'll buy an umbrella," he promised with a smile, leaning close to brush a quick kiss against her lips. His heart felt lighter for having confessed the worries that had been plaguing his mind. It seemed that no matter what happened, Liv always knew just how to make things better and how to make him smile again. He just hoped he did the same for her and hoped he always would.

Smiling still, she released his hand as they reached the bottom of the stairs, tucking herself under his arm with her own thrown around his back, heedless of the thick layer of her coat between them making her clumsy. "Now then," she mused as they stepped from the big house and into the wintry chill, "where do you want your ice cream?"

"Wouldn't you like to know?" He smirked, waggling his brows at her playfully. That was a bit of a loaded question, as he imagined licking it off her body, but with his luck, it would more than likely melt too soon and create more of a mess than it was worth. He slid an arm around her shoulders, partly to keep her warm, partly just because he liked her close. Whatever happened next - ice cream or no ice cream - the dark mood that had been hanging overhead was gone. They had proved to themselves and each other that they could be responsible adults, if given the chance, and that just maybe there was hope for them yet.

((Another cute scene with the new baby! And just what is sweet, well-behaved, staid Liv up to, I wonder? Keep your eyes peeled for clues! And as always, a huge thank you to Johnny's player!))
