An Open Letter to the Leaders & Members of the Coven of Bristle Crios:

Dear Fellows,

I write to you now in an open letter to invite camaraderie & cooperation among the Coven members, and if you find it suitable, others within our extended community.

In an effort to revitalize the sense of community, I am proposing the construction - or rather, addition - to each of the Houses of Bristle Crios which, a particular piece of equipment of an arcane nature. These pieces are outside the ken of one man to construct, and they would remain forever with the Coven to use as best befits the membership, at the discretion of the Coven Leaders; additionally, this equipment would be available to the Academy in order that they may pursue a variety of disciplines, using the equipment to augment their studying regime.

In order to pursue the construction of these pieces of equipment, these artifacts, I would draw upon the skills and talents of the membership of our Coven, and - if the Leaders see fit, and there are not enough within our walls to satisfy - some of the skilled artisans, magic workers, and technomancers within our extended community of Rhy'din; perhaps where there would be no interest within our walls, interest could instead draw those from without inside, perhaps for the first time.

I admit that in the main, some of the constructs I propose will seem strictly valuable to those with a magical nature, but their uses will be more than that, at least how I envision them - and will require more than those skilled in magic to construct.

It is in fact my intent in the construction of these works, that the lines between magic and science be blended in their aesthetic design at the very least to highlight that particular avenue of cooperation; after all, any sufficiently advanced technology, at least in most cases, is indistinguishable from magic.

I will note as well that not only will these works benefit the Coven of Bristle Crios, but in some cases the extended community within the city of Rhy'din as well. I note this mainly for its importance in determining whether or you would welcome outside artisans - granted, perhaps with some sort of screening procedure.

I will detail now, in some small detail the functions of some of those things which I would seek to have built:

The Looking Glass - and forgive my nicknames for the projects, they are an affectation I seem unable to escape, for they seem somehow right - which is a device to study alternate or parallel realities.

The Pendulum, which is very similar except in the fact that it would be used to examine time;

The Labyrinth, an arcanotech machine which would enable the moving of objects large or small through a multi-dimensional field to hide or obscure them; the Lamp Post which is a similar device except that it works in the opposite way, allowing things in multi-dimensional fields to be found.

The Aegis & The Cage, both of which would serve the more martial minded among the Coven especially in testing the limits of their battle prowess - as I realize that some value it highly; the more technical details of these are somewhat more complicated, and would prefer to share on a one on one basis as to avoid confusion to make sure my ideas on them are understood.

Finally, the Maelstrom. Essentially, this last piece is in essence a type of voltaic cell which is charged through energies gathered in the two previously mentioned devices, and sent back to the rest, giving them power. The key to its power generation is the assimilation of a variety of energies, and transferring them into one usable by the rest of the devices.

I eagerly wait a response from any and all who would be interested, either in person or in written format; either can be attained with me at my office in the Academy, or barring that, during what I would call 'regular hours', in Mage House.

Sincere regards, Lord Atticus Kiergaard D'Arcstorm High Mage, First Company, First Sword

Kruger

Warrior House was waking up, the sounds of residents readying for their day echoed in the corridors. The inadvertent clash of weapons and armor would have woken Kruger if he hadn't been up long before going over his notes for the latest class. There was time before he needed to be there, but he could smell fresh coffee brewing in the kitchen. He descended the stairs into the lobby and began to pass through when he noticed the gleam coming from the board. He stood there for a moment as people moved around him, none seeming to see what he did.

He bypassed the board intent on his original idea of coffee. He found a ceramic mug and poured to just below the brim. As quickly as the house woke up, it also had a tendency to empty out. Kruger passed back through the lobby ignoring the parchment. It kept pulling at his attention, despite an iron resolve. He stepped out the front door content to shiver a little in order to finish his coffee in peace.

The other houses sat quietly on the grounds. It wasn't the sound that bothered him, but the glow that seemed to come from each house. Light pushed around the front door of each building, including Kruger noted with some degree of disturbance, the one behind him. He spit out the mouthful of coffee he had just taken. He looked to the grounds again, people on their way to the academy for training bustled along. He saw a few then at odd intervals staring at the houses. "Fine, you win."

Kruger heaved a frustrated sigh that left his breath visible in the cool air. He passed back into the house and tore the parchment from the board. He half expected the page to stop glowing the moment he took it, but it continued to burn at him. He read through to the bottom before deciding what he was going to do. "I don't know what regular hours are brother, but I'll be there in about ten minutes."

Malka

Date: 2014-01-17 07:46 EST
People could use a lot of strange means to keep in touch these days, but if anyone took a moment to study the open bejeweled silver compact in the redheaded woman's hand they would perhaps, be surprised nonetheless. The compact was equipped with the latest in communication technology whirring silently away behind the enclosed mirror's surface, and the jewels were every shade of blue and green that ever were. The strange thing, the thing that would give anyone looking over her shoulder pause and reason to wonder was the fact that reflected in the mirror - was just a white horse.

The woman holding the compact communicator in the flat of her palm as she walked through the chilly morning air was new to Bristle Crios entirely, Malka rarely left her caravan at the Market, even rarer still was for her to leave the horse on the other side of the mirror who she now and again looked at while she talked - making the odd remark about how they needed to remember to do this, or asking if the horse had remembered to do that - still she thought that she couldn't stay in her caravan forever, tinkering away on this invention or that genius idea. She had signed up to have a place at this Coven and by gum - she was at least going to walk around the grounds once! It was cold that morning and she was buried into the folds of a bright, emerald green coat, a small top-hat resting at a jaunty angle on top of her head. She almost looked like a ringleader at a circus, a horribly out of place ringleader, but still.

Quietly Malka slipped through the front door of Alchemy house, her eyes busily darting hither and yon, taking it all in as her feet carried her further inside the massive building. "Vivi" she spoke in a hissed whisper, looking at the horse in the mirror of the compact, who replied by planting a hoof on the ground in front of itself and bobbing its head in acknowledgement, "Vivi, this place is huge! If I can find an empty room maybe I can sneak you in —" Malka was cut off mid thought, rare for the Changeling, who's mind always seemed to be going ten miles a minute, her attention instead captured by a piece of paper that seemed to be shining, of all things. Despite the fact that the horse on the other end of the communicator neighed and snorted its impatience, willing Malka to finish her thought she ignored it, her slightly heeled shoes clicking against the floor as she crossed the space to tug the piece of paper free and read it. Out of habit she read it aloud so Vivi could hear. Create objects of fantastical power for a random stranger? It was pretty much her life's work in a nutshell.

Once she had committed the contents of the letter, including the name person who'd written it and the sorts of things he was after, which admittedly did not take very long at all Malka's gaze returned to the compact mirror in her hand and the white horse reflected within her brown eyes blazing as a million and one ideas began willing themselves into existence in the confines of her mind.

"Vivi take a letter -" she began, the horse snorting again in acknowledgement. "To whom it may concern - heck yes." She paused, considering the content of the letter before hastily adding, "best regards, Malka Brevas." Manners mattered after all.

Lydia's secretary came into her office and handed her a letter that was recently delivered. Lydia began to read it as the secretary left to return to her desk. She loved the idea of members of the Academy and Bristle Crios working together to create unique locations. Another part of her realized the potential the proposed locations had. Not only could they benefit the students in furthering their studies, but they might also be able to use them as tools to protect the campus and the entire coven.

Ms. Tolmay was completely on board. She would go to meet Atticus to discuss his plans and make efforts to help in any ways she could. As the Headmistress of the Academy, she hoped to be able to influence as much as the staff and student body to help in these efforts as well. Teachers could offer aid through tailored classes to work on the projects. Students could work directly with Atticus on a work-study basis to earn credit towards their programs. Opportunities to work together on these community projects were limitless.

Sitting on the floor in a sea of letters and papers, sat Miranda. Her foot tapping softly to the music that piped through the room making Angel twirl about with her stuffed bunny. A freshly brewed cup of tea with honey and cream sat on a side table, little wisps of steam rising into the air.

Most of the writing before her, Miranda could pick out it's owner by handwriting without looking at the name. Christine's reply with the list of drinks she would serve at snow moon, a letter from Lahan about how the green house was doing, Angel's teachers giving her updates.....the concise script did catch her attention.

Plucking the letter out of the sea her eyes drifted straight down to the name. Atticus" Taking her time reading through the detail it was clear that there would be several benefits from these creations and part of her hoped that it would lead to more in the future. Granted there were questions still to be asked before the work began, but this was a noble thought none the less.

In the mess Miranda managed to locate a pad of paper and pen. Her flowing detailed penmanship in stark contrast to Atticus'.

Dear Sir Atticus,

It is most thrilling to hear of these projects and I am happy to add my name to the list of those willing. I look forward to discussing this in further detail with yourself and other at a later date. I will see to it that some members who are off grounds are forwarded your letter in the hopes they might join. As always my door is always open.

Sincerely, Miranda Branson Coven Leader

Fiona collected her mail and sat down at her desk in the front office room of her suite in Demon House. She opened and read Atticus's letter intently, beginning to devise a plan to help. She began to handwrite a letter of response. Never being able to sit still when excited about a new project, she would frequently get up to check her files, blueprints, and other records in order to research what might be beneficial for the community projects he proposed. Once she collected enough information, she completed her letter and sent it to Atticus.

Lord D'Arcstorm,

I would love to lend my aid in the production of your proposed artifacts.

Please allow me to ask a few questions regarding their construction.

Where would you like to build the aforementioned artifacts" You mentioned adding one to each of the Houses of Bristle Crios. Will some need to be on ground level, below ground, or in an elevated floor" Depending on the space, other areas of the Houses may need to be moved or altered to make suitable space. Also consider the high number of people traveling around the construction areas during production. These areas may need to be modified to better withstand the increase in traffic patterns. Detours will need to be planned in advance to keep current routes flowing as smoothly as possible.

What type of supplies and equipment will be needed" Planning will be required for every material needed from lumber to tile spacers. Necessary items will need to be ordered and brought in to the grounds for construction. Will magical and arcane elements be required" If magical aspects are needed, what types of schools of magic would be necessary for the production' What areas of science based skills would you require" Technology and engineering would undoubtedly be helpful. Natural sciences may be of use in some of the projects as well.

How much manpower do you be expect to be required" Is there a certain timeframe by which the artifacts must be completed" All of these are essential to determine a possible schedule for construction. I would hope that the main work efforts would be provided by the Bristle Crios community and the Academy, though outside involvement is very much encouraged. Skilled artisans, magic workers, technomancers, and anyone else who may be able to contribute towards these efforts would be welcomed. Due to the need to keep Bristle Crios as safe as possible, a screening procedure as you mentioned would need to be implemented.

These are just a few of the initial planning questions and concepts. Other concerns can be discussed as the projects progress, such as financial investments. The coven has a substantial amount of resources, but a reserve is always preferred. If we spend all of those resources on this project, we may put ourselves at financial risk after the construction, or even during production. The Academy of Bristle Crios has some funds as well, but I would not like to dictate its spending procedures. Outside sources of donations or investments may also be considered, but that is something to be considered on all ends involved.

I look forward to working with you. Please feel encouraged to reach me at any time.

Sincerest regards, Fiona O"Neill of House Knightfall

Ammy Spiritor

After a final examination of the prototype Auto-Mail arm from her second year students, Ammy listed off satisfactory mechanics, several flaws needing attention and a lot of compliments for the elegance and simplicity this years project had produced. Arm set aside on her desk, Ammy sifted through grade reports from all four classes, essays to mark, lab reports to cross check and a few counseling reports for the Academy. She rubbed her neck wondering how she managed this plus run a city and a family bent on the unusual every day. An envelope stuck out among the blueprints she'd been sketching up for making Den City float in the air.

Envelope taken with care, she opened it and read the letter from Lord D'Arcstorm. She reread it a few times and tapped her chin a bit. The complex arcane machine she was seeing out of this public goal had her curious but it also had her wondering if a few things had been consider. Ink well opened, she'd forgo the usual pens and with her own claw inked a letter to Lord D'Arcstorm.

Greetings Lord D'Arcstorm,

The public proposition of building anything together is a warm change compared to the world's events of late. I can see you have a very keen, clever and elaborate mind with these artifacts fitting together in a grand artifact. However, I am curious, and maybe a little hesitant about some things without additional data.

My simple questions are:

1. Have you built this on a small scale yet to test out all power theories and arcane interactions and reactions"

2. Public projects are great when they are memorials, art or parks, but this collection of devices seems to offer a substantial amount of power and possibilities. Who will be in control over the use of these artifacts alone or combined, who will be in charge when it is misused"

I do look forward to this collaboration between the two academies. I hope I do not look like one to doubt the merits, just call me a hesitant Alchemist with unknown reagents.

Sincerely, Ammy Loraine Spiritor, Catalyst of Alchemy House, Professor, Councilor Den City Governor

Letter finished she sealed it into an envelope addressed it and sent it on its way to Lord D'Arcstorm. She really needed to get out and meet more mages. Soon she was back to her office routine, working away again on the next Alchemy lab involving lead and a result to make it into steel.

Another letter, written in what he hoped was not too much haste, using the power of Bluefire to create copies while penning the original; the stack of crisp, white paper residing beside him on the desk as he wrote emitting a blue glow which slowly pulsed in time to the loops and whorls Atticus made on the page as he wrote. As the copies were created, Bluefire added tracing and homing enchantments onto each of the pages, attuning specific copies to those that Atticus had already had contact with; the attunement was realized by virtue either of Atticus physically meeting the person, or using the missives sent to Atticus as foci to locate their senders. In addition of course to the ones specifically attuned, were those sent again to the leaders in general, and to the Houses to be posted in common areas.

An Open Letter to the Leaders & Members of the Coven of Bristle Crios:

To My Brethren and Fellows of Coven & Craft,

Let me first thank you for your attention, those of you who have found time from your schedules to address and consider my offer and request. Forgive as well, I beg you, the time it has taken me to formally address you again; I sought to contact as many of you as I could, those whose correspondence signified interest but whose offers of interest were vague " although to be fair their reply was no less vague than my initial approach.

I will attempt to address in this correspondence with you, summary answers or concepts on the questions and concerns regarding my proposal to you all. The main, initial concerns seem to be as follows:

1. What will the endeavor require, in terms of material, and other like " mundane " queries, such as physical location"

2. What will the endeavor require, in terms of labor and effort on the parts of those wishing to be involved in the actual construction"

3. The third notion of concern is more one of responsibility, and the morality of the existence of said artifacts, I believe.

With these three things in mind, here are my adjustments, and first addendum, to the proposal I have already submitted to you all. Pray I am not too circuitous, and make my thoughts clear.

By reasoning that I believe it shall be the smallest section to elaborate on, let me first cover the more mundane aspects of my proposal " and I mean no disrespect, the notion of what kind of materials might be needed for a project the size of the one I described would in most cases be vast; thankfully that is not necessarily the case with this one. I will state, I believe for a second time, that I intend to use the transdimensional field inherent within the Coven grounds to settle many issues of space and size for this project.

To be clear, each House will "house" one of the proposed artifacts " which will be made in small scale compared to how my original proposal must have sounded (forgive me, in my own notes I did make allowances for just the problems you're asking about " and took it for granted, in my scattered thoughts, that my notes were in my mind's eye, and not public). Each of the artifacts in question will be no larger than the size of a large chest, and their final deployment will be a matter of placing them in the location of choosing within each of the Houses, and attuning the artifact to the transdimensional field there " allowing it to expand to fill the space of the room.

Obviously, the location within each of the Houses to this end is important, as the small scale initial versions must be to scale with at least the main point of entry to the rooms which will House them " as it is from the point of entrance and egress that the lesser version will be attuned to the inherent fields.

The financial aspect " besides the donation of the space to House, and the time aspect for those interested in taking part, will be minimal, due to the small size of the initial construction.

It is worthwhile mentioning at this juncture, I believe, that I have in fact performed numerous experiments with the magical theories I'm proposing instilling in these artifacts " and that the functioning of them is quite sound, though I must admit that I have some synergistic goals for how some of the pieces can, or should be able to interact, that I haven't been able to test on a smaller scale.

The secondary aspect that I will address is resolving the question of what is expected of those who choose to participate in the implementation of these artifacts. I'll preface what is expected by saying that my initial plans involved much less in terms of manpower " that is to say, only myself. However, my initial plans also involved a far different location than the one I am now presented with, and less chance of assistance, so I am changing them accordingly. I will also add that taking others into the creation process will make the process more difficult, I believe " but will achieve greater potency when the ordeals are finished.

The participants will be required to perform twofold duties; the first and easiest of these will be in the actual physical creation of the small scale versions of the artifacts " which we will now call the Vessels. For the most part, the creation materials for the Vessels will be relatively mundane, but in some cases there will be call for more exotic materials; in addition to the construction and conjoining of the materials, plus arcane and scientific preparation of materials - the materials themselves will, in some cases, need to be sought out.

The second requirement of the participants would be " to the dismay of some, at my wording I am sure " that they partake in the actual ritual of installation, in which the scale models are insinuated into their corresponding Houses. This will, I feel, be the more difficult of the creation process, as people from different backgrounds will have to come together to participate in a ritual that will challenge them in the way they see reality.

Though this may sound like something grand, consider the mundane task of creating light. It is done through ritual, from friction between two pieces of wood, to the act of turning on a switch which in turn activates an artificial light source; both these things are Ritual, yet we understand them. But they do not work because we understand them, we understand them because they work (I realize my potential fallacy here, brothers and sisters, yet humor me this attempt at a stable metaphor, I pray).

I will not detail the ritual here; suffice to say that it will not involve anything as barbaric as child sacrifice or any such unsavory act.

More a willingness to believe, and the willful decision to suspend Consensus " that thing which is the product of the common belief, and separates the notion of magic and technology. For this endeavor, it is Consensus that we must not overcome " but change. I digress; this simple letter is not the time or place for such an explanation.

To those who are skilled in the creative arts, I must allow this " it is likely this will be a chance to look at the act of creation in a way which might have originally seemed different, but will end up showing you parallels to other modes of creation you may not have originally considered.

Though I have had the pleasure of meeting numerous new colleagues as a result of this endeavor, Sir Kruger, Headmistress Tolmay, Lady Knightfall, Wolfbrother Thorne, Lady Breva, and of course the Lady Branson, who I had the pleasure to know before " my favorite inquiry which has been raised as the result of this endeavor is not one of can we, or how do we, do this thing. It more accurately comes down to the question of should we, which was voiced by the Lady Spiritor.

It is a question of moral accountability, should something go amiss.

To this end, I would have the artifacts be in the control of the Coven, or its leaders or Council members " access given out as they would see fit. To this end, each of the artifacts will only be able to be accessed in very particular ways. Two methods of control must be used, in the initial failsafes that I have already designed. Each of the Houses, within the rooms which house and are in fact the artifacts, will additionally have a Throne within it; the purpose of these Thrones, is to serve as the method of activation of the artifact in question. In addition to this, each Throne will have a particular key " which only the Council will have access to " that will allow a user to be paired with a Throne.

Once a user is paired to the control Throne of an artifact, they will remain paired and able to use it until that pairing is revoked by whoever uses the key last; for those in the technological parlance, the equivalent of granting temporary administrative access to the device " which may be revoked at any time by a Councilor who is also paired to the device.

To give an example of the layout that I mean; I feel strongly that the artifact known as the Aegis will be imbued within Warrior House, and the corresponding Throne of Access is thusly the Throne of War; anyone may sit upon this physical representation of a control device " but it will not serve them unless they are keyed to it. Once they are keyed to it, they may ever sit the Throne of War, and access the Aegis " unless a Councilor removes that privilege.

One final note I will add in this correspondence: caution is welcomed, so long as it comes in the form of questions and not ignorance. The support I feel I have received in this endeavor I find exceptionally pleasing, and genuinely mean to fashion something which would be the benefit of not the few, but the many. Perhaps my folly, that I am too much a dreamer, and not enough a realist; and if that be the case, then I would have your caution ground me, and perhaps I will benefit from your wisdom, even as I seek to share the gifts of my imagination. I realize in some ways, I have stepped from obscurity to ask this of you, my would be colleagues, - and I hope in some cases, friends" ? To trust in a relative stranger. I only ask that you meet with me, speak with me, and if you must judge me then only judge me thusly.

Sincere regards, Lord Atticus Kiergaard D'Arcstorm High Mage, First Company, First Sword
