Second Chances

She'd left Rhy'din a couple of days ago. In fact, she wasn't all too far from the city yet. She'd finally come to a stop for the night, and settled down on the bed roll she had brought with her. She stared up at the sky for a long time, just studying the two moons and the stars as they shone in the darkness. Eventually she stretched out, and closed her eyes. Within seconds, a heavy sense of peace fell over her.

Then it felt like she was falling, and falling, and falling some more. It felt like forever. Then it felt like she hit a cement floor. She jolted awake, and simply stared at the room around her. In fact' she stared for a long"long time. It was mid-day, and the sunlight filtered through the window, and illuminated the bedroom of her childhood. Her dolls, her clothes, her everything was still there. Still untouched, and untainted by screams and smoke. She'd always had dreams of what had happened. Not of how things had been before. And this" it didn't feel like a dream to her. But it had to be, right' Slowly, she uncurled her body, and moved to get to her feet, since she was somehow on the floor.

Slowly, she inhaled, and stepped forward a couple of steps. Towards the door. Her hand hesitated briefly above the door knob, and in that time, someone else had the knob turning. Immediately, she scrambled backwards, tripped over her own feet, and landed on her butt. By the time she had looked up, there was a younger version of herself standing before her with wide amber green eyes. She lunged forward, and jerked the girl towards her, before she pushed the door shut.

"Hey! Lemmegowhatareyoudoinginmyroom' MOOOO-" She clasped her hand over the girls mouth, before she could continue the wail for her mother. "Shush. Please don't scream. It's not' I'm not going to hurt you? Or would it be me" I ah.." she paused, and let go of the girl, who scrambled back and turned to face her.

"What?"

"I don't know anymore! I thought this was all a dream! You! You're me, just younger" and momma" and daddy...they're still alive. And Josh too?"

"Uh-huh. And I think you're crazy. Why wouldn't they be alive" Nothin's happened to anyone. And there's no way you're me. You're" well" You're old."

Her younger self's words made her head hurt. They made her want to curl up and pray that she'd be woken up from whatever god awful, and cruel dream this was. It was torture, knowing her family was still alive" and well, she could go and see them. She'd make them as confused as she knew her younger self was. Seconds later there was a black shimmer in the air, and then she felt like she was falling again. Maybe she was falling through time. That'd explain what she just experienced. Once again, she hit concrete, and jolted, hopefully, into what she thought was being awake.

Smoke. Screams. Panic. That's what she appeared in. Her house was burning down all around her once again. This" This seemed like her normal nightmare. Maybe it was all dreams. What had happened before. It'd be wonderful if it was. But this was different. Normally this nightmare started upstairs in her room, when she had woken up. This time she was in her living room, watching her mother cry over her brother's dead body. She heard soft footsteps rushing down the stairs. Silently, she watched as one of the raiders stepped forward, with his sword raised, and thrust it down, into her mother's back.

"NO!"

Her scream was echoed by another. Her younger self, who had fallen to her knees at the base of the stairs. She watched as the same raider that had dragged her off when she had lived through this, stepped up behind her smaller self, and grabbed her. She stayed frozen, stuck in a moment of time where she felt like she was watching it all in slow motion. The man's rough movements, and grabbing hands.

It was all a dream, right' It was that very thought that sent her rushing forward, towards the raider. She was quick, and he didn't even see her coming. He body slammed into his like it was a ton of bricks. It sent both her younger self sprawling, and the raider as well.

"Don't! Leave her be, and just take me instead. I'm older, better. She's just a little girl." Both her younger self and the raider had gotten to their feet in the time it took her to say this. The raider seemed to consider it for a second, before he moved to lunge for the girl. She was faster though. She lunged forward, and pushed the girl, right out of his reach, right into the black shimmering she had seen before. Only, this time, she didn't feel like she was falling. She still felt stable, smelled smoke, heard screaming, and crashing, and the crunching of glass.

She felt arms latch around her waist. It only took her seconds to realize that it was the raider.

A chill ran through her, despite the heat. "You're gonna pay for that, you bitch.? The raider growled into her ear. She was still there, locked in the dimensions of her nightmare, while the girl, her younger self was gone. She was stuck.

She felt like she was paralyzed. She couldn't move, couldn't fight, couldn't scream. He smelled the same, looked the same. Everything was the same; it was like living through the nightmare twice. She didn't know if she'd be able to do it.

Eventually, he started dragging her backwards, towards the same room. It was that, that made something within her snap. One of her arms jerked forward, then was snapped backwards with all her might, right into his ribs. She got the satisfying crunch of bones breaking in return. The man gasped, and released her from his grip, and howled in pain. She stumbled forward a couple of steps, and whirled around to face him. His arms were wrapped around his torso, and he was glaring at her.

"Come on. Try something else, you bastard. I've been dying to actually be able to have a chance to see you again." He stared dumbly at her in response. She snorted, and darted forward, before she grabbed him by his shirt, and jerked her closer to her. Then with her free hand, she pointed to the last spot her younger self had been, before she disappeared.

"That girl. Y"know, the young one" That girl is me. Innocent young me, who just watched her whole family get slaughtered before her. Who you were going to drag into that," she paused long enough to point to the door of the dining room, before she continued. "Blasted room right there. Where you'd force yourself onto her. Where you planned to rape her and further traumatize her. The exact room, where you'd leave her to die as her house burned down around her."

"I...I wasn't. I didn't plan to.." the man slowly trailed off when he spotted the feral look that crossed over her features. He stepped back a couple a feet, then turned to run for the door

Her head canted to the side as she watched him, before she smirked. Then she darted towards him, easily tackled him to the ground, and maneuvered herself so that she was sitting on his lower torso, and was pinning him down with her hands. Then she leaned down as he struggled against her grip, and whispered into his ear.

"How, does it feel to be helpless, trapped, with no way to escape from what?s holding you down" It's absolutely terrifying, isn't it' Being forced into something you have no clue about." She grinned here, before she continued. "Now, I'm no longer that terrified little girl, scared and confused about something that she was helpless against. How does it feel to be helpless" How does it feel to have no hope of escaping?"

She moved her head down a little so she could nip the flesh of his neck hard enough to draw blood, before she ran her tongue over the wound. She could feel him as he jerked underneath her, and renewed his struggle in trying to get her off of him, along with coughing several times, due to the smoke that was crawling into the house from a broken window, and the upper levels of the house. After a moment she leaned back so he could see her face, and the malicious grin that crossed it. "How does it feel, knowing that you're going to die here in the mess you created" You're not going to be able to continue on and continue to destroy villages and the mentalities of other girls and women. You know that, right?" Those words were spoken softly, and were more of a purr than a whisper.

She waited quietly for some kind of response from him. Other than a couple of coughs, and a terrified stare, she got nothing. So she fisted her hands in his shirt, and jerked him upwards, before she slammed him back against the floor. He yelped, because the movement jostled his ribs, and well" his head hit the floor with a dull resounding thud. In response, now that his arms were free, his hands shot up, and grabbed her wrists, before he rolled his body so that he had her pinned beneath him. Now, he grinned lecherously. "Who's going to die again?" He mused softly. She blinked a couple of times, before she grinned in response. "I already told you that." And with those words, she jerked her leg up into his groin, which caused him to drop like a ton of bricks. She grunted, and moved to wiggle herself out from under him. Eventually though, he groaned, and rolled off of her, clutching his pride and joy.

It was at this time, that there was a large cracking sound above them, and part of the upstairs collapsed feet away from them. She glanced towards the flaming mess, then towards the raider that was still rolling around in pain, oblivious to the danger he was in. She wanted to have more time with him. To make him suffer a little bit longer, but it wouldn't do her any good, if she died in her house with him. She took a deep breath, then turned, and ran for the door. She turned the knob, and pushed it open. Then she stepped out into the chaos of the rest of her village.

There weren't as many people as before who were screaming. In fact, it sounded like there were only a few people screaming, and the number was quickly dwindling. Fire was everywhere, as were animals, raiders, and the bodies of those that she had grown up with. She stood there for what seemed like an eternity, just taking in the whole scene. It hurt to watch it, and have it happening around her.

Eventually, a body collided with hers, knocked her to the ground. A snarl tore out of her, and her hands darted up in response to grab a hold of whoever it was.

"Ack! Hey. No. I'm here to help. Is there anyone alive in that building?" His attention shifted to her house. Dumbly, she shook her head "No." "Ah fine. Good. I'm just trying to get survivors out. That's about all that I can do, but still. She blinked rapidly at him. This man, must be the one that had saved her younger self in the past"present' One of those two. She immediately let him go.

"Good. Just...don't stop. I'm certain those that you save" will be grateful someday." She was. It took her a long time to get there, but she could certainly say that now. That she was grateful that she had been saved. She watched as he stood, and brushed himself off.

"I won't. Make sure you get somewhere safe. And don't leave that place for a little while.? And with that said, he turned, and ran. She stared after him for a long while, before she took a deep, unnecessary breath and pushed herself to her feet. She just wanted to go home now. She wanted it more than anything else. She turned, and walked, unknowingly into a shimmer of black. Apparently if there had been a lesson to be learned, she'd learned it. Once again, she was hit by the falling sensation, the feeling of hitting bricks. And when she opened her eyes, she was home, stuck in the nighttime glen. Knowing that, she curled up, and closed her eyes, content for the time being.
