Stas set the box down and pushed open the front door of the house. Once the door was opened, he picked up the box and walked sideways into the house. "Amelia?" He called out as he headed towards the master bedroom. Still in his mauve colored scrubs, he didn't wait to get home with the newly acquired piece of equipment.

Thank God for Sarah, her friend at the antenatal classes, that was all AJ had been able to think for most of the day. She hadn't been certain at first, thinking perhaps that the babies were stretching or that she was confusing Braxton Hicks with ordinary backache - which had kept her awake most of the night - but after a conversation with Sarah it had become pretty clear that she was in the early stages of labor. She'd promised herself, if the contractions started to come less than five minutes apart she would phone Stas at the clinic. But they hadn't, though they grew longer in themselves.

So, when she heard her husband's voice at the close of yet another contraction, she straightened up in time to see him walk into the bedroom and smiled. "Well, hello, handsome," she grinned, leaning up to kiss him affectionately. "What's got you so worked up?"

Upon entering the bedroom, he put the box down and placed his hand in the small of AJ's back and gave her a gentle kiss. He knew the look and his brows shot up. "How long and how far apart?" The piece of equipment forgotten, for now. "When did this start?" He knew better than to usher her to a chair or onto the bed. He liked his head, just where it was. "Why didn't you call?"

She rolled her eyes with a smile. "Should've known you'd guess right when you walked in, huh?" She wrapped her arm around his waist and leaned against him. "I noticed it about ten minutes after you left," she admitted with a guilty glance up at his face. "And I didn't call, because I've been speaking to Sarah and Mylene, and they both said not to worry about it until they got closer together and longer. And there's nothing you can do apart from hover over me and make yourself a nuisance, is there?" Hazel eyes looked up at him in amusement.

His lips pursed as he listened to her and when she said he'd be a nuisance, he canted his head with a frown. "I wouldn't be a nuisance." A peck to her cheek, then he walks over and picks up the box. "So, how bad is it' Are you in a lot of pain" Did you lose your plug yet?" He fiddled with the box a little bit, debating on whether or not he should open it up. With his wife in labor, now was not the time to show her the changing table he'd bought that fitted perfectly beneath the window in their bedroom. He sighed and ran a hand through his hair.

"The plug went about three hours ago, my waters haven't broken, the pain's not so bad that I can't cope with it," AJ rattled off the list of information with a faint smile. She'd been expecting this. "So what did you buy that had you all excited when you walked i-" She stopped, pressing one hand to the wall and the other to her belly, breathing out shakily.

The box was tossed aside when she grabbed her stomach. "I can't examine you here." He glanced around as he put his arms around her for support. "Breathe, in your nose, out of your mouth. Slow, deep breaths." He didn't want to try to move while she was having a contraction.

Her face flushed as she breathed her way slowly through the contraction. Not quite a whole minute yet, she was fairly certain, but she had a feeling her opinion would be over-ridden by her professional husband's. She did lean gratefully into him, though, laughing a little when the tightness had passed. "Thanks," she smiled, looking up at him. "It's been really weird dealing with this all day on my own."

He smiled proudly at how well she handled the contraction. Kissing her cheek, he rubbed both belly and back. "Come on, love. Get dressed. I'm going to take you down the clinic so I can examine you. Call Mylene and let her know we're coming."

She nodded, trying her best not to roll her eyes as he issued his orders. "Yes, sir, right away, sir," she teased, squeezing his hand as she moved away to drag on a loose dress and cardigan. "Don't forget the bags," she remembered to call to him as she lifted the phone, waiting for Mylene to pick up.

Part of Stas hoped that Mylene didn't pick up the phone. As he whizzed through the house, gathering the bags, he felt a surge of protectiveness and possessiveness that he'd never known before. His wife, his children on the way. Hefting the bags all on one shoulder, he went back into the bedroom. He gave her an expectant look, a hopeful look.

"Okay ....thanks, Mylene ....bye." AJ put down the phone and turned to Stas with a grin for the look on his face. "She's phoning the ward for us, they'll have a bed ready for me. And why didn't you tell me I'd be delivering in what amounts to an OR?" Her expression was anything but disapproving; how could she not be touched by the sweet look on his face"

He couldn't hide the brief glimpse of disappointment, but he did try. Nodding as he listened to what Mylene the Mighty was going to do for them, he tried to shake it off. "The OR is just in case something happens." He put on a smile for her and placed his hand into the middle of her back. "I've got a car parked outside. No more walking, not where there isn't medical staff, anyway."

AJ caught the disappointment as it flickered across his face, sliding her arm around his back and kissing his cheek. "She's just there to help us," she murmured gently. "You're still going to be the first to hold our children, Stas."

"I know, it's just.." he shrugged and lead her towards the front of the house. "The doctor in me wants to do it all. I've never been on father's side of the bed. I've always been the Johnny Bench guy that nobody remembers their name."

"Well ..." AJ groaned and paused for a moment, rolling her eyes. "You'd think they'd stop moving when their big moment arrives, wouldn't you?" she complained lightly as she started ahead again, smiling at him. "As I was saying ....you're not just catching the baby this time, darlin'. You're the father; you're my property until they make an appearance, remember? Just don't pay any attention to anything rude I say to you."

Stas stopped at the door and reached down to feel her stomach. It was rigid, but a definite kick could be felt. It was a good sign the labor hadn't progressed as far as he originally thought. "Amelia, nothing a woman in that much pain says can be held against them." Soft chuckle and he opened the door, holding it for her. "This could take days, Amelia. Most women don't even notice when they go into labor."

She gave him a look that no doubt has been perfected by women enduring their first labor for thousands of years. "It had better not last days," she muttered, waddling over the threshold and out onto the porch. "Swear to God, Stas, if this goes on more than twenty-four hours, you are going to call my mom and your mom and they can come and argue the babies out of me."

"Each labor is different, Amelia." He explained as he joined her on the porch. He took her hand in his, and his other hand held her elbow as he started down the steps, one at a time. "And it's not going to make me think any less of you if you ask for pain medication." His eyes went wide then. "I need to call your mom, my mom!"

"Whoah, whoah, easy there, hotshot ....deal with this mom first, 'kay?" AJ laughed a moment, cutting off the sound with a short gasp that quickly turned into those regular, relaxing breaths she'd had all day to perfect. Her hand, however, squeezed around his like a vice for the duration of the contraction.

"Okay, okay. Okay!" his hand was squeezed and he came to a halt to help her breathe through the contraction. His hand moved from her elbow to the small of her back, once again. He checked his watch and noted the time.

Straightening up again, AJ nodded. "Okay, good to go." She heaved a soft sigh as they moved towards the car again. "Seriously, I'm going to get very bored of this if it lasts as long as you think it will."

"This is just the first stage." He got her to the car and opened the door for her. The bags were tossed into the backseat, then he stood back and waited for her to be seated. "The second stage, you'll probably nap between contractions."

"What, you're expecting me to pass out while pushing?" she laughed, lowering herself into the front seat carefully and twisting herself inside the car. To be honest, AJ really didn't know what to expect from any of labor. She'd read all the books, of course, but all that information was just so much smoke now she was actually doing it.

"That's the third, and final stage. That's when you'll want to sleep, because your body is hard at work trying to get the babies out." He didn't even try to seatbelt her in. It wasn't that long of a drive and he knew that the monitor belts were going to drive her insane. "But we'll get through it, together."

"Uh-huh. So what?s the second stage, then?" AJ leaned back in the seat with a soft sigh, anticipating hours and hours of struggling to get her own body back. "I thought this was the first stage and then the second stage was pushing and the third stage was the whole icky after-birth stuff."

He got into the car and started it up. "The first stage is what you're going through now. Contractions are uncomfortable, but bearable. The second, or transition stage, is when the contractions hit harder, faster. They last a bit longer. The cervix thins completely and dialates fully." He put the car in reverse and eased out of the driveway. Into drive, and they're on their way. "It's best not to push during that stage. It just bruises the cervix, making it take longer to thin and dialate."

"Okay ..." Well, at least she was taking it in this time. He had to have explained all this to her far too many times to count. "Did you remember to lock the house up" And when do my waters - oh, wait, don't worry about that." AJ winced, thanking her lucky stars that she had chosen to put on a huge pad and plastic knickers

Stas stared at her, wanting to laugh at locking the house up. Their babies were about to be born and she was worried about the house! But he kept his laughter at bay, just a smirk. But that smirk disappeared quickly. "What do you mean, don't worry about that?"

Opening her mouth to answer, AJ was forestalled by another contraction, a little stronger than before. She held up a hand to him, breathing in and out as slowly as she could, despite the strong urge to pant and panic. When it had passed, she let out a slightly ragged breath. "I mean ....I'm sitting in a puddle."

His head swivelled from watching the road to watching his wife as she went through another contraction. He breathed with her, in and out, slowly and calmly. He was so proud of how she was handling all of this. "A puddle!" he checked his watch, noting the time. His foot pressed the accelerator peddle a bit harder, the car moving sleekly and quickly along the road. Things were progressing much more quickly than he had anticipated. "When's the last time either of them moved?"

"When we were walking out the door," she reminded him, clutching onto the door handle. "Do we really have to go this fast?"

"You've been doing the breathing all day?" He didn't loosen up on the accelerator, not a bit. He was trying hard not to slip into a panic mode of his own. He didn't want to scare her though so he bit back the part where he didn't want the babies born in the car thought that raced through his head.

"Yeah, all day," she nodded, trying not to panic. If he was driving this fast, then he was close to panicking, and Stas panicking would make for a highly volatile AJ. "Started out at about six contractions an hour, then about two hours before you came home they got longer and started getting closer together."

"Amelia, why didn't you call me?" It slipped out before he could bite it back. It wasn't accusatory, not as much as it sounded anyway. "I'm sorry." He took a deep breath and stared at the road. "Why didn't Mylene call?" He was going to have words with the mid-wife when this was all over.

"Don't start." It was all she needed to say; after all, he had apologised. He was the expert here, not her. She was just the mommy. "She was waiting for me to call her when I got to minute long contractions," she explained quietly. "I wasn't expecting it to be so qui - oh!" In, out, slow breaths ....one hand slid over her bump, seeking out somewhere that wasn't a head, a bottom or a limb to press against and test the tightness of her uterus.

"She should have called." he ground out and was so glad to see Riverview Clinic just up ahead. "Breathe, Amelia." He pulled the car up to the front doors and came to a halt. He didn't jump out though. He reached over and gently pressed his hand against her bump.

Her hand gently covered his as her belly relaxed, and she looked over at him. "Unless they've somehow spun 180 degrees overnight, they're still pointing in the right direction, love," she assured him. "Scan yesterday, remember?"

He smiled reassuredly when the contraction eased and her stomach became somewhat less rigid. He wasn't testing whether the babies were turned, he was testing the rigidity of her uterus, as well. "Just wanted to be sure." He then got out of the car and reached for the bags in the backseat. The nurses had come out of the Clinic and had a wheelchair ready for her. Stas moved to her side of the car and stood behind the small flock of nurses, in the same scrubs that he still wore.

AJ took one look at the wheelchair and shook her head. "No. Not a chance, I can still walk," she objected, waving her hand as she pushed the car door open. "Stas, put the damn bags in the chair and help me, would you?" Quite frankly, she didn't care whether she was offending nurses; she had no intention of letting them shut him out of any part of this, and that included getting her out of the car and into the hospital.

The nurses backed off as Stas did just as his wife had asked of him. The bags were dropped into the wheelchair. Bending at the knees, he offered her his hands to help her to get up. "Easy, love. Easy."

Grabbing onto his hands, AJ managed to get herself upright before the next contraction hit, leaning forward against her husband with her hands clutching his arms. As it passed, she leaned back, hiding her grin from the nurses. "I am easy," she assured him within that grin. "Don't you dare let them treat you like that, or I'll get difficult."

He breathed with her during the contraction, then helped her to stand upright. "They're just doing their jobs, love." How many times had he seen dads pushed to the side" "Once we're inside, I'll have to go get changed. But I won't be gone long, I promise."

She nodded, taking a deep breath before beginning the walk into the Clinic itself, hoping like hell they didn't bump into anyone who wanted to chat. "Guess I shoulda put more than one change of clothes in the bag for you, huh?" she chuckled lightly, leaning against Stas more for the comfort than the need of it.

His arm was around her and he placed a kiss to her cheek. "No worries, love. There's plenty of scrubs here that fit." He laughed softly and walked with her into the labor and delivery admitting area. There was a certain buzz in the air; when they'd pulled up it had been announced on the intercom. So everybody that they saw had smiles and words of encouragement. They had the paperwork ready and Stas signed in the right spots. He almost signed in the areas he was used to, as attending physician. But he caught himself with a laugh. "I'll be right down, Amelia. Let me get changed." He gave her a kiss to the lips before he trotted off towards the doctor's lounge.

"You'd better!" she called after him, finally letting the nurses take over from him to help her towards the private room that had somehow miraculously been kept free all day. AJ made a mental note to waggle a finger at Mylene for that when all this was over. With Stas gone, the nurse that stayed in the room with her settled her belongings as quickly as she could, helping AJ change into her nightie and dressing gown between contractions. When Stas returned, he would find his wife bent almost double, leaning her forehead and arms on the bed, still breathing as slowly as she could. "Okay ....okay ....gas and air would be good ..."

With gauzy footies on and the dark green scrubs, a hat on his head, he walked into the labor room. "Amelia!" he rushed to her side and gently rubbed her back. "You're doing so good. Just keep breathing like that." The nurse was trying not to laugh, seeing the usually inflappable Doctor Ryan showing signs of becoming unglued. Stas ignored her as he concentrated on his wife. "Easy, take it easy." he whispered to her, pressing kisses to her cheek at every opportunity.

"Do you want to do this?" was snapped back at him as she stretched her back out, straightening up and leaned against the bed, which mercifully had been elevated so she could do that without overbalancing. "Sorry ....I'm sorry ..." She leaned her forehead on his shoulder. "Seriously, though ....days?"

He hadn't expected her to snap already. But he did his best to hide the surprise when she did. Stepping back a little bit, he pushed the button to lower the bed so she could get into it easily. "No, not days. The membrane ruptured. We're talking hours, at the most." He pat the bed and smiled to her. "Alley oop!"

Well, he did know about her temper - it had been a concern of his when they'd first met, if he was going to even attempt to remember that. She flopped backwards onto the bed, determined to only rest as long as she could get away with before getting back up again. After all, wasn't gravity supposed to do most of the work here" "Let me guess ....gonna look up my skirt, Dr Ryan?" she smiled, shifting up to make the most of the pillows.

When she was settled into the bed, he reached for the box of latex gloves. "How'd you guess?" He smiled, snapping the gloves into place. The nurse gave him a frown and shake of her head. But Stas didn't care. He wanted to know just how far along she was.

AJ gave the nurse a look over Stas' head, obligingly putting her knees up and opening her legs. She'd been in this position God knew how many times over the last few months as well. "Hey, when's my real doctor getting here?" She grinned teasingly, winking at her husband before dropping her head back.

When she assumed the position, he inserted two fingers. His other hand placed on her stomach. He gave her a scathing look at the "real doctor" jab. "Hmm." He looked towards the ceiling as he measured her progrress.

AJ giggled at the look on his face, unable to resist teasing him just a little bit more. "Mmm, a little deeper, honey," she put on a moan, and the nurse left the room, snorting in a pitiful attempt to hide her laughter.

For that, Stas grinned and ran his thumb over a certain tender part of her intimate anatomy. He could play this game, too. Then he pulled his hand out and took the gloves off of his hands. Straight to the anti-bacterial stand, he put on a good dollop, then rubbed his hands together. "You're doing good, really good." His smile showed the pride in his eyes. "Just try to relax until your real doctor gets here."

She shivered when he did that, smirking back at him. Her legs relaxed as she let her head fall back with a soft sigh. "He is here," she murmured, reaching out a hand to lace her fingers through his. "Did you phone your mom?"

He smiled and lifted her hand to gently kiss her knuckles. "Not yet. Do you think I should?" He pulled up a stool and settled onto it beside her bed. "How are you feeling?" His free hand gently pushed the hair back from her face.

"I get the impression I'm gonna feel much worse before this is over," she smiled, biting her lip as another contraction took hold. Her eyes squeezed shut along with her fingers, tight around his until his skin turned white. But it was over soon enough - again longer and stronger than before, but not unbearable. AJ opened her eyes and her smile returned. "You're the expert. When do you think they should be told" I'll lay good money on your mom getting here first."

"Don't close your eyes." He gently coached her, not once complaining about his hand being squeezed so tightly. When the nurse rolled the monitor into the room, Stas stood back and let her do her job of getting AJ strapped into it. The internal wires weren't to be inserted, as Orla wasn't as far down as Seamus was. Stas took a moment to text both sets of parents. He didn't want to waste a second talking to them when he could be at Amelia's side.

"Oh geez, does this mean I gotta stay here now?" AJ complained faintly, watching with interest as the monitor was strapped across her belly. It was a huge relief, however, to hear the two heartbeats, especially since she hadn't felt them move much at all today. "Stas ....I forgot to do my fetal kicks today, is that a bad thing?"

Stas misted up at hearing the sounds of the dual hearts beating within her. He squeezed her hand and lowered to kiss her softly. "You're doing everything just right, Amelia. I love you so much." His big blue eyes gazing into her hazels. "It won't be much longer."

"You're a bad lia- uhh!" Again her hand clamped down on his, as tightly as she could, and for the first time, she completely forgot the breathing exercises, doing what came naturally, a shallow panting that actually seemed to make her want to push. But no one had told her to push yet, so she somehow managed to refrain. "Please tell me the whole ouch business going on down there is one of them trying to get out ..."

He held her hand and remained close to her face when the contraction slammed into her. "Yes, it's Seamus, he's in a hurry to meet his mom and dad." When the contraction ended he glanced to the door, then back to her. He didn't like not knowing what was going on every second. Had she finished dialating" Was the baby crowning" So badly he wanted to know these things. But, as it were, he was glued to Amelia's side.

Her fingers released his. "Have a look, you know you want to," she gasped, relaxing back against the pillows. Already sweaty and flushed, and she had a feeling they were nowhere near done yet. "Just don't prod, or I'll kick you."

The heartbeats slowed during the contraction and then sped back up as it waned. This was to be expected and a good sign that things were progressing as they should. He gave her a grin and bent to the side to peek under that dressing gown. No head to be seen. Sitting back upright, he took her hand again. "So when you breathe, keep your eyes open. You don't want to internalize anything, because you'll start pushing too soon."

"Too soon?" AJ was aghast at that. "You mean it's not time yet?" She whimpered and shifted onto her left side, burying her face in the pillow to have a small scream of frustration without disturbing anyone else on the ward. "And where the hell is the damn midwife?!"

"Not yet, you'll know. It'll feel like you've got to defecate, only about a hundred times stronger." He rubbed her back and sighed softly. "Amelia, don't get worked up, love. It's not good. Keep your cool. You can do this, you're strong."

And in walked Mylene. Dressed in the mauve colored scrubs and a white lab coat, she carried Amelia's chart. "Well, what?s all the fuss about?" She smiled to the parents to be. Quickly, she moved to the monitor and lifted the ribbon. Making small marks where the contractions began and ended, noting the stretch between the inked peaks. Then she turned to AJ, on the opposite side of the bed from Stas. "Sorry about being late. But I didn't want to argue with the dad to be about exams. So how many centimeters, Doctor Ryan?" She gave him a smug grin and reached to gently touch Amelia's shoulder.

"I'm an impatient person, you'll just have to put up with this," AJ grumbled, but the scream had helped to some extent. She reached over and pulled her husband down to kiss him warmly. "Ignore me when I get ratty, I won't mean any of it, I promise." She smiled at him, pushing herself up to kneel in the middle of the bed as Mylene walked in. "Oh, that's better ....it's about time! Drugs, give me drugs!" She laughed cheerfully, a sudden change of attitude. It wasn't that she didn't trust Stas, but he was the dad, the birth partner. He couldn't be the doctor and midwife as well.

"I know, love, I know." He gently rubbed AJ's back and watched Mylene do what was his normal routine. "Five." He grumbled to her and sat back a bit. He continued to rub AJ's back, but with the arrival of the mid-wife, he suddenly felt redundant, unnecessary. He kept his face carefully hidden as he looked on. AJ was happy she was here. That was good enough for him.

Mylene laughed at AJ's sudden change and nodded. "if it feels good, do it. And five centimeters is half way there." She gently patted AJ's shoulders then stepped back. "Let me get a nurse in here who can tap a vein. I'll just leave you bruised, bloodied and scarred." And then she was gone, leaving the parents to be alone.

"God, is everyone's first port of call to inject me with something?" AJ demanded, settling onto her backside to lean against Stas. She knew her smile when Mylene came in must have upset him, but it was something she'd discussed at length with the midwife. Stas was going to be a lot busier than he might have first expected. She kissed his cheek. "Love you," she murmured. "But don't let them do the whole epidural first. If they have to site it, site it, but I don't want to be completely confined, not yet. Please?"

The nurse came into the room with her little basket of needles and the IV bag and tubing. Stas hugged his wife, placing soft kisses to her cheeks. "No epidural. I promise." He truly felt out of his league. The nurse placed a tourniquet around AJ's upper arm and when she found the best vein, pushed the needle into her arm. A soft pop and she knew she had the vein. The IV was quickly set up and the nurse left the room.

"Okay ....ow ..." AJ glared good naturedly at the nurse, flexing her arm as she looked down at the little intravenous catheter that had been left in her skin. She looked at Stas accusingly. "Isn't she supposed to warn me it's going to hurt?" Her belly tightened and she leaned forward onto all fours, dropping her head between her shoulders as she breathed.

Stas' good natured grin was back at her complaining about the IV sting. Gently, he moved with her as the contraction hit. "Look up at me, Amelia." He gently coached as his hand pressed more firmly into the small of her back.

Breathing deeply, she lifted her head, hazel eyes meeting the baby blues of her husband as she groaned in relief at the expert pressure on her back. There were definite advantages to having an OB/GYN for a husband.

Several hours later, in the early hours of the next morning, a very familiar voice was heard approaching along the corridor as the first of the parents arrived. "Oh, don't be ridiculous, the boy'll need a rest by now ....George, go and find a coffee machine, there's a good man." Alyson Ryan pushed open the door quietly and grinned at her son. "Morning, sunshine. How's it going?"

When the door was pushed open, three sets of tired eyes moved in unison to see who was there. Stas smiled tiredly and Mylene nodded to Mrs. Ryan before going back to look at the monitors. She had just examined AJ and found that she was nearly completely dialated and fully effaced. They had put up a mirror so that Stas could watch from his post next to AJ's head. Her hand was still in his. "Hey, Mom." he grinned and waved her over. "It's going good, she's doing so good." He was so tired and excited, at the same time.

"Hey, Mrs - whoah!" AJ bit the pillow as another contraction hit. She didn't think she had ever felt so tired as she did right at that moment, whimpering into the material. The contraction was slow to pass, strong and painful even as she struggled to keep her eyes open as Stas had continually told her to over the last God only knew how long. "God ....make it stop ..."

"Oh, sweetheart, you're doing so well." Alyson was quick with the praise, gently disengaging her son's hand from his wife's with a perfunctory kiss to his cheek. "Seems I'm just in time." She smiled encouragingly at Stas. "Go and wake up a bit, Stas - get changed if you've got anything. If she's this far along, it'll be a little while before she's ready to start pushing." She perched on the edge of the bed and stroked AJ's hair from her face. "Easy, girl ....with any luck you should get a chance to doze a bit now."

Stas really was in no mood for this. "Mom, go sit on the couch, where you'll be comfortable." He attempted to take his wife's hand from his mother. "I'm fine. We're both doing fine. And she's far enough along that she'll be pushing within the hour. So please, let me be with her." He looked down into his mother's eyes.

Mylene just grinned as she watched the drama unfold. As another contraction hit, she watched AJ carefully. She hoped that the mother/son scuffle that was about to ensue did not upset AJ. The labor was progressing beautifully and she knew AJ would not appreciate a set back.

"And I suppose you think you'll be all the help in the world half dead on your feet and smelling like a sweating horse," Alyson answered her son, not raising her voice but definitely using the tone that had always worked on him as a child. "Don't make me call your father in here to drag you out, it'll only upset her." She slapped his hand away gently, and smiled affectionately at her son. "You'll only be a few minutes."

AJ wasn't entirely sure she was happy with the fact that her mother-in-law had barged in and taken over, but she knew Alyson was right about Stas. Between the contractions, she'd been trying to make him go and at least have a drink, if not something to eat, herself. She lifted her head, managing a smile for him. "Go on, darlin'," she told him quietly. "I promise, no pushing til you get back."

Stas was very close to coming unglued and only his wife held him together. He sighed heavily and stood up from the stool. Stretching his arms over his head he then slumped his shoulders and trodged out of the room. He was mumbling under his breath and shaking his head. Now he really felt unneeded and unnecessary. Going to the doctor's lounge, he found a quick change of clothes, a swipe of deodorant to his pits and a strong cup of coffee.

Mylene smiled as she watched Stas leave the room. She continued to write notes in the chart as she curled her legs under her on the couch. "I've never seen him like that before. It's kind of funny, in a way. He used to make fun of the dads sometimes."

"He'll get over it," Alyson grinned. "Bless him, it's not everyday your wife gives birth to twins." As she spoke, she pilfered the cup of water by the bed, gently encouraging AJ to sip from it. "You'd be Mylene, then, yes" I'll move over for him when he gets back, don't you worry. But ten hours before you even get to the main event, that's a long wait for an expectant pa."

AJ sipped obediently at the water, collapsing against the pillows again with a loud groan. "How much longer before I'm allowed to scream?" she asked pitifully.

"And you must be Mrs. Ryan. Nice to meet you." The midwife smiled brightly and tapped her pen against the pad of paper. "She's been in transition for a while, and doing remarkably well at staying calm and collected. I think it's what?s keeping Dr. Ryan so calm. If she were the screaming type, he'd have lost it, hours ago." She laughed and placed the chart to the side. Her eyes went to AJ and she laughed softly. "Now that he's out of the room, scream all you want. Your body is nearly ready to deliver and if it makes you feel better, then let it rip." She pulled out two small, yellow rectangular pieces of foam. "I've got earplugs."

AJ couldn't help it then, she laughed helplessly and that laughter turned to tears as another contraction began. Up on all fours again, she dropped down onto her forearms and sobbed into the sheets as she weathered the wave of painful tightness. Every time the contractions came now, she could feel somebody's head pressing downwards, a little further each time. But she'd promised her husband she wouldn't push until he came back, and she was going to stick to that unless Mylene told her she absolutely had to. But still ...."Oh, God," she sobbed helplessly, "please just make it stop ....I can't do this ..."

Alyson moved with her, her hand rubbing up and down her daughter-in-law's back firmly as AJ endured the contractions. "There, sweetheart, you just have a good cry," she cooed softly. "You've earned it. Get it all out of the way before the hard part begins." She looked up at Mylene. "Calm and collected, huh' Well, she's certainly doing better than me. By this point, I was screaming merry hell and doped up to the eyeballs."

AJ being on her hands and knees was the best place for her. It kept the pressure of the babies off of vital veins, arteries and nerve bundles. It also kept them off of the umbilical cords. Mylene stood as the contraction washed over her patient. "We've given her a mild analgesic to take the edge off. The rest, she's been doing. I think she's trying to keep it together because she knows that if she loses it, Stas will." She laid her hand on AJ's hip then. "Ok, Momma. On your side. Let me take a peek at what?s going on, ok?"

Stas came back into the room a bit rejuvenated after that cup of coffee and a stolen cigarette. He had made sure to rinse with mouthwash before coming into the room. "What's happened, what?s going on?" He quickly went to AJ's side. "I'm here, love, I'm here." he tried to calm her, the best that he could. Her tears frightened him, though. "Breathe, soft pants." His eyes went from his mother to Mylene, then back to AJ.

As she rolled onto her side, AJ thought she'd never been so relieved to hear Stas' voice as she was at that moment. She reached out blindly for him, grabbing onto his hands as she slowly calmed down, lifting her leg up to let Mylene have a good look at what was going on in the undercarriage department.

"Easy, Stas, she just needed a cry." Alyson was pretty quick to get out of the way, though; if Stas was anything like his father, he'd commit bodily harm to get to his wife right now. She squeezed his shoulder and kissed his cheek. "Soon, lovey, soon." With one last gentle rub of her fingers against AJ's cheek, Alyson retreated to the couch, and pulled out a magazine. She was only there, really, to keep a lid on Stas.

With one hand, Stas resumed rubbing his wife's back. The other hand was a bit swollen and painful, but he uttered not a sound when it was grabbed. He just barely heard his mom's words, merely nodding to her as he leaned to whisper into AJ's ear. "I'm so proud of you, Amelia. You're doing so good. Not too much longer." He pressed his lips to her cheek. "Not much longer."

Mylene took a peek and smiled. "Not much longer is right. I'm can see some hair." She pulled up a stool and ran her finger along the baby's barely there scalp. "He wants to play peek-a-boo." She mused as the top of the baby's head disappeared.

George was the first to see his in-laws arrive. He smiled at the two of them and pointed towards Amelia's room. Then he lifted the magazine and began to read calmly. Lillian gave Richard a kiss on his cheek, then marched into the room. "My baby's having babies." She smiled to all those in the room already. Quickly she moved to AJ's side. "Momma's here now, baby. It'll be alright."

Alyson almost laughed when AJ groaned aloud on hearing her own mother's voice. "Oh geez, mom ....I love you, but go away," she protested, her tears drying up as she used Stas to find herself the most comfortable position. It was time, she could feel it. And being the unconventional young woman she was, she was soon up and off the bed, one foot firmly on the floor, the other knee bent up onto the bed, and both hands around Stas' neck as she leaned into him. "Come on ....any minute now ..."

Richard had poked his head in just in time to hear AJ's greeting to her mother, and smothered his own laugh as he ducked straight back out again, closing the door behind him. The grandfathers were probably going to wander off to the canteen for the next hour or so.

As for Alyson, well, she managed to bite down her laughter to smile encouragingly over at Lillian, patting the couch beside her. "Best come over here before she starts scratching," she joked quietly, and lifted a tupperware container. "Have a sandwich, you've had a long drive, Lillian."

Lillian looked a little hurt, but wandered over to sit beside Alyson. Really, no need to be rude. She blinked rapidly at the offered sandwich. "No, thank you." She smiled graciously and sat back on the faux leather couch. The snob in her wanted to scream at them about the deplorable conditions, but her daughter's antics had her attention directed to her, her jaw dropped.

"Amelia!" Stas and Mylene said in unison. "Get back up in the bed, AJ." Mylene's voice was a bit more calm. "The baby's going to be slippery and I'll have to catch him and be lucky if he doesn't slip through my fingers with you like that."

Stas merely nodded in agreement. He'd never seen a woman do that before.

"But this is more comfortable," AJ protested unhappily. "I - oh, okay, bed's good." The nightie was hitched up so high at this point that everyone in the room could see how her belly tightened and rippled as the next contraction hit. AJ clambered back up onto the bed and compromised, kneeling up and clinging onto Stas as she gritted her teeth. "For the love of God ....now can I push?"

Stas became a pillar for her to cling to. "Hold your breath, put your chin to your chest and push." He smiled, his arms under hers to keep her upright. "Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one." He blew out a breath, indicating it was time for her to do the same.

With thick latex gloves on her hands, Mylene gently pressed and ran her finger around the crown of the head she saw. Once Stas was done counting, she nodded. "Again."

AJ's jaw locked, her teeth jamming tight together as she squeezed her eyes shut, holding onto Stas tightly. She pushed down with all her might, trying not to grunt and groan the way people did in movies, especially not with her mother in the room. There was a hot, stinging sensation between her legs as she pushed, pressing her face into Stas' shoulder.

"Take a breather." Mylene saw the tear and quickly grabbed a pair of surgical scissors. AJ wouldn't even feel it when she was cut. Episiotomy completed, the scissors were placed on the dirty equipment table and Mylene gently dabbed the small amount of blood from the top of the baby's head. "Ok, now."

Stas put his head down to AJ's shoulder as he held onto her. "Okay, now. Push!" He counted down from ten once again. "You're doing so good, Amelia. So strong."

AJ really was barely aware of anything but what appeared to be a double-decker bus trying to force its way out of her womb. Her nails dug into Stas' shoulders as she pushed, just the barest keening sound coming from her throat as she reached the end of each push, panting for breath before beginning the whole process again.

Finally Seamus' head was delivered. "Ok, AJ, slow down a minute." Mylene suctioned out the fluid in his nose and mouth. She helped him to gently rotate into the final position to deliver the shoulders and the rest of him. "Ok, AJ, give it all you got. One last push."

Stas was counting down again when he heard Seamus' first wail in protest of the bulb syringe being shoved up his nose. "Irish tenor." He grinned and held onto his wife. Then the counting, again.

"Oh god, oh god, oh god ..." Her silence finally broke as she put everything she had into that last push, feeling the first of the twins pass through her pelvis and into Mylene's waiting hands. She vaguely registered the screaming coming from behind her, all too keenly aware that there was the afterbirth and another baby to go yet. She sagged against Stas, breathless, even as Alyson burst into a spontaneous round of applause, close to tears as she watched her first grandchild born.

Outside, Richard pushed himself out of his lean on the wall with a grin for George. "One down, one to go." He pulled a couple of cigars out of his jacket pocket. "Fancy a smoke, Pops?"

George grinned and opened up his jacket to show off the cigars he'd brought. "Congratulations Grandpa. Let's go have that smoke. Keep us from barging in before they're ready."

"Yes!" Stas felt his wife sag against him and he gently helped her to lay on her side. He was torn, wanting to hold his son, but worried about leaving her side. He settled on a compromise and when Mylene handed the screaming baby boy over, he held Seamus so that AJ could get a good look at their boy.

Mylene had cradled Seamus upside down on her arm, letting the fluids drain naturally as she rubbed his pinkening skin vigorously. "That's it, such a good boy." She cooed before wrapping him up and handing him over to Daddy. She prepared for the second arrival.

Lillian's eyes went wide as saucers and her face went pale. When that squirming, slimey little lizard came out, she passed out cold on the couch.

Tired but somehow completely elated as well, AJ took full advantage of the opportunity to rest on her side, unaware of the afterbirth for her son, but very much aware of the baby girl's heartbeat over the monitor as she looked at her son. "Hey, lil' guy," she whispered, stroking her finger down Seamus' cheek and laughing as he turned his face with his mouth open towards her fingertip. "Be patient, I gotta get your little sister out first." She smiled at Stas warmly. "Look what we did."

Beside Lillian on the couch, Alyson was all but bouncing up and down excitedly. She spared one withering glance for the unconscious Madam Drake before turning her attention back on the squirming, screaming baby boy in her son's arms. She'd never felt so proud of him as she did at that moment.

Stas was all smiles and tears as he held his son in his arms. A small, happy laugh as Seamus turned towards his mommy with his mouth opened. Bending over, he kissed AJ sweetly. "Look at what we did." He smiled from ear to ear.

"Stas," Mylene had been watching the monitor and delivered the afterbirth without a single problem. The placenta was placed in a small pan for weighing later. "Come cut the cord." Her smile was radiant. Stas quickly stepped over and snipped between the two plastic clamps. Still with Seamus in his arms, Stas then walked over to his mother. He bent at the waist and presented his son to her. "Meet your grandma." He grinned at his mother, the tears still in his eyes.

Taking every opportunity to at least doze between babies, AJ could hear everything going on as she closed her eyes with a happy smile. One baby out, safe and healthy ....her ears focused on her daughter's heartbeat, still beeping cheerfully from the monitor strapped around her middle. One to go.

Alyson was up on her feet as Stas bent down to her, kicking Lillian sharply in the ankle as she took the tiny boy into her arms. "Well done, lovey," she murmured to her son tearfully as she kissed his cheek. "He's beautiful ....what?s his name?" Alyson knew Stas well enough to be certain that both twins had their names long before they were born.

"Seamus." he spoke quietly and kissed his mom on the cheek. He gave his mother in law a quizzical glance before stepping back. "Take good care of him." He absolutely beamed before rushing back over to be with AJ. He was ready for round two and knew that once it started, it would end quickly.

Mylene sat back and waited for the next round of contractions to start. She knew they'd be milder as AJ's body had already done most of the work with getting Seamus into the world. She waited patiently, simply watching the others and marking in the chart the date and time. A laugh when the nurse wanted to take Seamus to be weighed. There was no chance in hell of getting that baby free. Not this second, at least. "Apgar, 8," she murmured and wrote it down.

Lillian woke to the kick to her ankle and sat up quickly. "What's happened?" She looked startled and then saw the baby in Alyson's arms. "Oh, oh my. So tiny!"

"Of course he's tiny, mom, he's been in there with his sister for the last eight months," AJ laughed fondly, watching as Alyson relinquished the tiny boy to be weighed before having him back in her arms. Her hand found Stas' gently, stroking her thumb over his knuckles. "Almost there," she sighed with relief, blinking tiredly up at him.

Stas laughed happily as he sunk down onto the stool. "Almost done." He smiled as he gazed into her tired eyes. "I'm so proud of you, Amelia." He gave a gentle kiss to her lips, then nuzzled his nose to hers.

With her grandson back in her arms, exclaiming over how very small he was - '4lbs 2oz!" - Alyson was all for helping speed up the process so her son and daughter-in-law could have Seamus back as soon as they were ready. "Say hello to Seamus Ryan, Lillian," she smiled, gently handing the tiny boy to his other grandmother before moving to where a bowl and cloths were lying beside the sink. Might as well give him his first bath while he was still screaming, get it over with.

Lillian did what she could, which wasn't much. Simply content to be touching her grandson, she never knew that she could hold so much pride and love for a child. "Seamus?" she turned her head to look at her daughter and Stas. "That's...different?" She tried to smile. The boy would be called Charles, she was determined.

AJ lifted her head, hearing her mother's comment even as she nuzzled with her husband, glad of the break her body was giving her. "Seamus, mom," she said with quiet determination. "And Oliver, for grandpa ....if that's okay with you?"

Alyson busied herself with the nurse, getting together the bowl to wash Seamus, as well as towels and lotions, a sleepsuit, diaper and blanket. She moved over to the couch, more than happy to kneel on the floor with a grin for Lillian. "Come on, then, Nana," she encouraged the super-star. "Let's give the lad his first wash while he's still testing his lungs."

Stas couldn't help but chuckle. Knowing the wait between twins could be a long one, he continued to nuzzle his wife. Their son was born and he was on cloud nine.

Mylene stood with a stretch. "Call me when the contractions start again." She smiled to them all, then slipped out of the room for a much needed bathroom break. As she passed the grandpas, she smiled and congratulated them before running off.

"Seamus....Oliver?" Lillian smiled tightly and reached out to help give the little guy a bath. "You poor little guy. I'd be crying too, if they named me that."

Alyson smiled, up to her elbows in water with the firm grip only an experienced mother could have on a squirming newborn, leaving the actual washing down to Lillian. "Fine strong name," she grinned, tilting her head to look over at the door.

Richard was peering inside, making room for George to do the same. His eyes went first to his daughter, relief showing that she seemed well and strong, ready to go on, and then to the boy splashing in objection to being washed up. "What a pair of lungs!" he laughed softly. "Well done, Ammy. Congratulations, Stas."

Pushing herself to sit up a little and make room for Stas to sit beside her on the bed, AJ giggled a little at the antics by the bowl, looking over to smile gratefully to her father. "Don't pass out the good wishes yet, dad, there's another one to go," she grinned, relieved to give up the centre of attention as she leaned warmly against Stas, kissing his cheek lovingly.

"Yes, fine strong name." Lillian nodded and with a swift precision she didn't know she had, the little, squirming and squawking one was wiped clean of the slippery white protective coating. "He is so darling." She cooed, her heart absolutely melting. Already, Seamus had her wrapped around his little finger.

George grinned as he watched his wife and grandson, water being splashed. "He must be a Drake. Listen to how loud he is." A huge grin on his face as he turned his eyes on his son and daughter in law. "Well done you two." Then he stepped back and tugged on Richard's sleeve. "Come on then. Let them finish."

Stas snuggled up onto the bed beside her. His arms around his wife and her nearly deflated belly. He heard the conversations going on around them, but his eyes and ears were for her only.

Between the two grandmothers, Seamus was quickly washed, dried and dressed, still mewling but definitely quieter than before. Alyson was more than happy to let Lillian coo over him while she cleaned out the bowl, ready to recieve the next baby for washing before they would have to relinquish both to the new parents.

AJ rested her head against her husband's shoulder, trying to snatch a little more rest before the whole palaver started all over again. But Seamus' sister didn't seem to want to wait any longer. She tensed as her belly contracted again, and groaned. "Here she comes ..."

Stas sat up quickly. "She's coming?" He glanced around, looking for Mylene. Grabbing the emergency cord, he pressed the button and talked into the intercom. "Mylene, to room 103, Mylene, room 103." He let the cord go and went down to see just where his daughter was. "Oh.." He quickly donned a pair of gloves. "Her head is right there. Push, Amelia, Push!"

Her hands braced on the metal head rest at the top of the bed, AJ closed her eyes and pushed as hard as she could, completely trusting her husband to get the job done. She panted and gasped, gritting her teeth as she pushed as hard as was possible, given how tired she was.

Already, the head was out and Stas was in doctor mode. He guided her head to rotate to the side as he suctioned out her nose and mouth. "One more, Amelia. One more." He watched with eyes widened. "Come on Orla, cry for Daddy."

Mylene ran from the bathroom and burst into the delivery room. Slightly out of breath, she quickly went to relieve Stas of delivery duty. Stas was reluctant, but he forfeited the bulb syringe to the midwife and returned to his wife's bedside.

One more push, and she felt her daughter being born. But AJ was far more concerned about the fact that her daughter was not making any noise, reaching for Stas' hand as she pushed herself half up to look at the tiny girl in terror. "She's not crying ....why isn't she crying ....Stas ..."

Mylene laid Orla onto the table and began to vigorously rub her down as four anxious sets of eyes looked on. Finally, a soft, frail wail escaped the little one. She was pink and alert, but very quiet. Mylene clamped the cord and handed Stas the scissors. "She's a girl, not a fussy budget either." Mylene smile proudly as she handed Orla to Stas.

He smiled as he gazed into his daughter's face. "Look, Amelia. She looks like she wants to ask me something." He lowered himself so that mother and daughter could become acquainted. And, indeed, she was pink and alert, brow furrowed as if confused by what all the fuss was about.

"Like what the hell you were doing pulling her out of her nice warm cave?" AJ suggested, giggling with relief at the sound of her daughter's quieter cries. Just as she had done with Seamus, she stroked her finger down Orla's cheek, letting the little girl suck on her fingertip for a moment. "Aren't you a serious little sweetheart' She's definitely a Ryan," she added, grinning at her husband, ignoring the busy end of the bed, where Mylene was dealing with the afterbirth.

Alyson watched, speechless, as her granddaughter came into the world, already demanding to know why in a much quieter tone than her brother. "Chalk and cheese already," she murmured to Lillian with a grin.

Stas laughed at the suggestion. "Probably right." He caressed the top of his daughter's head, relishing the feel of her pulse in that soft spot. "She's beautiful, just like her mom." Stas gently kissed AJ's cheek, then walked over with the bundle in his arms. "Grandmas, meet Orla. Orla Morrigan, meet grandma and grandma." He laughed and handed her over to a very surprised Lillian.

"Chalk and cheese?" Lillian watched her son-in-law walk over and was amazed at how much tinier Orla was than Seamus. And even more surprising, she found herself smiling, cooing, and suddenly loving both of their names. "We'll just have to make the biggest fuss over her. Prettiest baby pageants, everything."

As Stas moved over to their mothers, AJ shifted around in the bed, helping the nurse get her as clean and comfortable as possible as quickly as possible. While the adults cooed over the babies, she was dressed and sponged down, thankfully only needing a couple of dissolving stitches to tidy her up. Then she settled back into the pillows, smiling tiredly over at the other end of the room. She'd managed it.

With Seamus in her arms, Alyson watched as Lillian was handed their granddaughter. "What a little precious," she cooed happily, hefting Seamus as though he could see. "Look how clever your momma is, bringing you two into the world. How much does she weigh, Stas?"

Mylene did her part in helping to clean up the mommy. When Stas was over with the grandmothers, she went to sit on the stool next to her. "Hey, beautiful work." She smiled and placed a hand on AJ's shoulder. "You take it easy, but I want you up and walking in about an hour. Okay?"

Stas stood tall and proud as he watched the women fawn and coo over the babies. "Three pounds, fourteen ounces." He smiled as he watched the pair. "Well we know who was beating the hell out of your momma, don't we?" He reached for Seamus. "I bet he's a hungry little man." He smiled at his mother fondly.

With Seamus safely ensconced in his daddy's arms, Alyson moved to help the nurse prepare the bowl and towels to clean and dress Orla, this time letting Lillian keep the baby restrained while she did the washing.

AJ smiled at Mylene, absolutely exhausted. "Oh, I can manage that," she smiled. "Hey, can I get a bottle so Stas can feed Orla?" she asked softly. "I promise, I'll use the pump later. I just don't want him to miss out on anything."

"Of course you can." She smiled and rose from the stool as Stas brought Seamus over. Stas, of course, walked with a certain swagger. He was the proud poppa, after all. Mylene simply smirked. "Looks like I won the pool." She laughed and left with the order for the nurse to bring in a bottle of warmed formula.

Stas rolled his eyes and then sat down in the now vacated stool. "Amelia, this little guy's been wanting to eat." He held Seamus, letting AJ situate herself. He knew that nursing the baby would help to recondition her uterus back into shape.

Propped up on the pillows, AJ didn't feel even the slightest shame about exposing her breast to her son in front of her parents. With Seamus settled surprisingly comfortably in the crook of her arm, and Stas helping, she got the little boy latched on and feeding with more than a slight sense of satisfaction. "Hey, the little guy likes the boob," she grinned proudly, watching as her son finally shut up and got down to the serious tasking of eating.

"Just like his poppa, no doubt," Alyson muttered for Lillian's ears only as they washed the quieter girl, glancing up in expectation of the men entering at any moment to be allowed to be manly and melt over their grandchildren.

"I heard that." Stas chuckled and watched as his son latched on, naturally. "That's a good boy." he smiled and gently caressed the top of his head. "I love you." He leaned to give AJ a gentle kiss. "So much."

Lillian was simply beside herself with her granddaughter in her hands as they took the task of washing the little one. Orla merely made a face and squirmed when she was placed in the warm water. "Will you look at that?" She cooed and made little kissy faces.

George was the first one back into the room. "Looks like the gangs all here, finally." Smiling proudly he embraced his son and kept his eyes from the nursing grandson. "Congratulations, son." He stood back and clasped his hands in front of himself. "So, what are we calling them, besides Kid 1 and Kid 2?"

"How about Teeny and Teenier?" AJ suggested with a laugh, almost automatically rocking Seamus gently as he fed. She'd never expected it to feel so natural, holding her son so close. She couldn't wait to see the look on Stas' face when the nurse came back with a bottle for Orla.

Alyson rolled her eyes at her own husband as she nodded to Lillian, little Orla washed and ready to be dried. "Listen to you," she tutted at him. "If it were up to you, they'd be called Stonewall and Jackson, regardless of gender. Happen I like Seamus and Orla just the way they are named, right, Lilli?"

"Very Irish names, kids," Richard commented mildly, ignoring the little girl fussing with her grandmothers in favour of moving over to shake Stas' hand and lean down to kiss AJ's forehead. He remembered all too well the fuss made over babies when it was the parents who had done all the work. "Hope you didn't buy a nursing chair, Stas ....we've got a couple of them in the car for you both." Just because Stas wasn't going to be breast-feeding his children, didn't mean he shouldn't be comfortable while he was doing it.

"I think that they'll give us their own nicknames. For now, it's Seamus and Orla." Stas sat on the edge of the bed, one knee up on the edge as his lower leg hung down. He leaned on his arm beside AJ. "You're such a natural at that." He smiled fondly. "I didn't get the chance to buy nursing chairs. Thanks, Richard and Lillian."

"Stonewall and Jackson are fine names." George laughed and paced a little. He really didn't know what to do with himself. He glanced over at his son and smiled, remembering the day Stas was brought into the world. "He's going to be ok, Aly." He ended up standing beside where his wife sat.

Putting a diaper on the tiny granddaughter and getting her dressed was proving to be a frustrating job. Lillian Drake never changed a baby's diaper in her life. With the diaper half hanging off of Orla's tiny body, she lifted her up and held her out to Alyson with an embarassed smile.

AJ watched her mother struggle with the diaper, wondering what Lillian would say if she knew her daughter had been volunteering in the baby unit here at the Clinic for the last five months. She smiled at Stas, kissing his cheek. "Can you grab me a towel, handsome?" she asked softly, watching as Seamus pulled his mouth away from her breast, smacking his little lips.

"Oh, no, lady, you're going to learn how to do this right now," Alyson grinned at Lillian, guiding her to put the tiny girl back down on the mat. "You nearly had it. The sticky on these things can be real tricky." She knelt beside Lillian, talking her through actually completing the task, and helping to guide flailing arms into the sleepsuit.

Richard didn't really know what to do with himself. Like Lillian, he'd never changed a diaper, or done any real parenting in his life. He hovered next to George, hoping some of the man's calm would rub off, along with a little of his experience.

LIllian was shocked, and more than happy, to receive the instructions on how to care for an infant. Once Orla was properly dressed, Lillian, uncharacteristically, hugged Aly. "Thank you."

"Of course." Stas rose from the bed and passed the two grandfathers, standing as sentinels. "Good job, Dad, Mr. Drake." He chuckled and disappeared into the bathroom, only to return moments later. He sat on the edge of the bed and offered the soft, fluffy towel to his wife.

George cleared his throat and smiled at Richard, then his son. He watched as the ladies fussed over the very unfussy Orla. "Easy as pie." He smiled, head turning towards Richard. "Just stand here and try to look important. Don't drop the baby when they had it to you. Simple, easy."

Alyson froze for a moment as she was hugged, before very carefully hugging back, wary of squashing Orla, who was beginning to fuss a little more. "You're very welcome, Lilli," she smiled. "Better late than never. I have a feeling these two are going to be just the tip of the iceburg when it comes to children in this family."

Richard smiled uneasily. "I dropped Ammy once when she was tiny," he admitted in an aside to George. "Not something I will ever do again, I can assure you."

Taking the towel from Stas with a smile, AJ was just spreading it over her shoulder when the nurse returned to the room, looking around curiously at the crowded space. As she lifted Seamus onto her shoulder, rubbing his back gently, AJ grinned at her husband. "Better get comfortable, daddy, the work starts now." She nodded towards him, and the nurse advanced, bottle of warmed formula in hand.

"The work, what?" He turned to see the nurse advancing with the bottle. "Oh, I see. Sharing duties already." He grinned and got up off of the bed. Quickly he rushed over to the couch where his mom and mom in law sat. "I will be taking this." He grinned and gently pulled his obviously hungry daughter up to his chest. "Hello, you." He found a chair in the corner and settled into it. "That's it, good girl." He smiled lovingly as he looked into his daughters deep blue eyes. "Daddy's little princess, aren't you?" He bent his head to place a gentle kiss to her tiny forehead.

"I dropped Stas, too." He whispered behind his hand. "On his head." He nodded, then smiled brightly to the grandmothers who suddenly found their hands empty.

Lillian sat back once Stas took Orla away. She simply smiled happily. The word grandmother growing on her.

As his sister settled in to eat her fill with her father, Seamus burped hugely in AJ's ear, letting a little dribble of spit up spill down the towel she was glad she'd asked for. "Goodness, what a loud noise," she laughed, lowering him into her arms again, and glancing up at George. "Would you like to hold your grandson, Major?" He wasn't actually given much of a choice as she lifted the baby towards him, looking over at her own mother. "What do you think, Mom' Still mad at me for falling in love?"

Alyson nudged her husband over towards AJ, rummaging in her handbag for the camera she was sure she'd brought with her and grinning at the way her own son took charge of his daughter.

Stas laughed loudly at the sound of his son's burp. "He sounds like you after a big meal, Dad." The grin he wore, the air about him, bristled with the pride that he could not hide.

"Oh, I, I do..." And Seamus was placed in his arms. A warm grin on his face as he looked down at his grandson. "Just like your dad." He looked over at Alyson. "He looks like your dad."

Lillian stood and walked over to her daughter. "Your falling in love is the best thing to ever happen to this family." She sat on the edge of the bed and lifted a brush. She started to comb her daughter's hair. "I just wish Devon could have been here."

"I'm sorry I snapped at you," AJ murmured, leaning comfortably into the pillows with a happy sigh. She could remember her mother brushing her hair when she was a child, but it had been years and years ago. Her eyes opened to watch Stas with Orla, her own lips curved in a fond, proud smile.

Richard stood a little behind George, peering down at Seamus, who seemed to be very well satisfied now, wriggling in his blanket to get comfortable before smacking his lips and staring around with that curiously serious look newborns have. "He's got Lilli's nose," he snorted, trying not to laugh.

"Well, at least between us ladies, the boy's going to be one handsome devil," Alyson chuckled, lifting up the camera to take a picture of her son and granddaughter. "Stas, you have to move the bottle around in her mouth, otherwise the nipple clogs up and she can't feed."

"No being sorry, Amelia. You were in pain. When I had Devon, I was knocked out cold. You too." She laughed as she dragged the brush through her daughter's hair. "You're a lot stronger than I am."

George turned and held Seamus out to Richard. "He certainly does not have Lilli's nose. He has your nose."

"Yes, ma'am." He moved the bottle and Orla continued suckling. Bowing his head so that nobody could see the tears that welled up in his eyes.

Nobody but his wife, who was quick to begin a group conversation to make sure the attention stayed off him for a few moments longer. "I don't know, George, I think Seamus kinda has your chin, and Mom's nose," she smiled impishly. "It's a bad combination."

Alyson burst out laughing at this, her full attention now on the men and baby beside her. "No, that's Richard's nose, all right," she objected, studying the child curiously. "Shame I've not met this brother of yours, I don't know if his nephew looks anything like him."

Richard looked slightly panicked on being handed the baby boy, but dutifully took the child and hurriedly sat down so he didn't drop the babe. He, too, inspected Seamus closely. "I think he's going to look a lot like his dad, personally," he suggested, "with his Nana's nose, of course."

Stas was physically and emotionally exhausted. Once Orla turned her head, smacking her lips, Stas put the bottle beside them on a little table. He didn't even consider a burping cloth as he pat her tiny back, now that she was laying against his chest. He was in a recliner, and pushed back to lift his feet into the air. With his hand carefully cradled on her back, father and daughter fell asleep.

"They're going to look like all of us. And that's final." George smiled and glanced over at his sleeping son. "There's a picture for you, mother." He gave Alyson's cheek a soft caress.

Lillian missed her son and speaking of him only made it worse. So she quickly jumped in on the other part of the conversation. "They're already beautiful babies. Let's not curse them with my nose, or Richard's chin or Alyson's mouth or George's....sense of humor." Dryly.

"And what?s wrong with my mouth?" Alyson jumped on that comment with a loud snicker, lifting her camera again to take the picture of the sleeping Stas and Orla.

"Here, Ammy, take your son back," Richard pretty much pleaded with his daughter, terrified that too prolonged exposure to the child might make some of his bad habits rub off on the baby.

"No, Dad, you hang onto him for a bit longer." AJ waved her hand at her father, shifting to the edge of the bed. "Mom, there's a bag in the cabinet next to you. Would you mind carrying it to the bathroom for me" I think I might only just be able to carry myself."

"Nothing!" Lillian laughed and got up to retrieve the bag for her daughter. "I think you've got a lovely smile, Alyson. But Orla and Seamus" the names rolled off of her tongue as if she'd been saying it all of her life, "are going to have their own." She waited patiently for her daughter.

George stepped to the side of the bed to offer AJ a helping hand if she needed it. "Richard, he's not going to break." A soft chuckle with a shake of his head followed.

"Here." Alyson moved into 'mommy' mode, pushing Richard back onto the couch and settling a cushion under his arm. "Just relax, the boy's just going to sleep on you." Richard gave her a panicked look, and stared down at his grandson, wishing the kid would wake up and start screaming so one of the mothers in the room would take him away.

Up on her feet, and AJ swayed, reaching out to take hold of George's proffered hand with a grateful smile. "Thanks, sir," she laughed lightly, shuffling across the room towards the bathroom. "Hey, at least I managed the walking within an hour thing, right?"

She paused in the doorway to the bathroom, looking back over at her husband and their tiny sleeping daughter, and her father cradling Seamus as though he was going to explode at any moment. George and Alyson seemed to be standing guard over both pairs, ready to leap in and help if they were needed. AJ turned and hugged her mother, squeezing warmly. The only down side to the day was that Devon was not there to see his niece and nephew on their first day in the real world. But she could get upset over that later. Because right now, she had a family, a real family, for the first time in her life. And she was never going to forget this day.
