Ember Pallin strode up to the glass doors of the Riverview Clinic and pulled them open. He walked into the busy lobby and headed right for the receptionists desk. He gave the lady a roguish smile.

"I am here to see Director Maranya Valkonan. I have several medical supply and equipment donations to offer to her. Here is a list of things she may choose from for free. You may send them to her ahead of time."

The receptionist looked at him with a little annoyance. Why did she seem to get the weird ones demanding Maranya" She took the clipboard, scanned the lists and handed the papers back to Ember.

"Mr. Pallin, the Director is very busy today. Without an appointment you may have to wait a few hours. Is this okay?"

Ember just smiled. "Point me to the nearest cafeteria and I will be out of everyones hair until she can see me."

He noted her directions and left for something to drink and a good meal that was not space rations.

The receptionist left a message for Maranya on her phone and sent a email with the list scans as follows:

After a long morning of wrangling with paperwork, which was made a lot easier than it normally would have been, thanks to Xenia's efficient help, Maranya finally sent her poor overworked assistant to go get lunch, and asked her to bring back a sandwich from the cafeteria that, more than likely, would grow stale by the time she remembered to eat it.

Her brows furrowed in thought while she reviewed the latest budget reports against the procurement requests filled out by the various departments.

So many things that this place needs and too little coin to divide up between them. It's not like apples, where you can make six apples into applesauce to spread them out evenly among seven people.

Her expression grew pensive as she caught sight of another flagged message from Reception on her flatscreen, as well as the flashing button on her phone.

What new crisis do I have to stomp on now?

Taking the voice mail message first, Maranya nodded to herself, and turned her attention to the electronic message next. Her hazels widened a bit when she started reading, then widened more as she went down the list of supplies.

Bozhe moi. It's as if Ember read my mind.

Laughter, rich and full, briefly escaped her.

Well, he is a Force user. Telepathy is in there somewhere, if I recall correctly. I wouldn't be surprised if he did some peeking a while back.

The post-subscript at the end of the message brought a flush to Maranya's face.

He remembered my wish.

When Xenia returned with a tuna melt an hour later, the Chief of Staff still remained in silent, red faced contemplation of her computer screen.

Ember sat back and relaxed at a cafeteria table. A good cup of coffee in one metal hand, the other metal hand flipped a view metallic cards over. He was playing some solitare with Sabbaac cards. He paused during one round and continued eating his shepherds pie with gravy.

"Indeed better than space rations." he chuckled to himself.

Gray eyes swept around the cafeteria and noted patients, families, and workers all alike here. He just smiled more. It was nice to sit back and watch the energy in a room that was not a perpetual pit of chaos. The energy was calm, and tranquil. Only a ripple here or there where sorrow or unfortunate news reached waiting ears.

He nodded to himself. That was calmness being balanced slightly by a touch of chaos. The energy was balanced well in this hospital. He caught some motion near his table. A few little ones were looking in awe at his metal arms and hands. He flashed them a warm smile.

"Ah, good afternoon younglings. I see my metal arms have caught your attention. Let me show you something even more fascinating."

With that the, the sabaac cards floated off the table and began dancing around the children. He smiled more as the laughed and tried to catch the cards.

The Chief of Staff finally noted the presence of her executive assistant with a sheepish smile. "Sorry, Xenia. I received some very good news, from an old friend of mine." Her left index finger lightly tapped at the computer monitor to indicate where the news came from. "Oh, and you brought lunch! I could eat the proverbial horse, may Angus and the rest forgive me for saying so."

Maranya reached out for the recycled cardboard takeout container, and set it to one side. "Oh, and could you please have Phyllia page an Ember Pallin to come to my office? Spasibo." She flashed Xenia a grateful smile.

When Xenia left the office, her boss cracked open the takeout container, and took the first big, gooey bite of that tuna melt.

*Paging Ember Pallin. Paging Ember Pallin. Will Ember Pallin proceed to Director Maranya Valkonans office. Once again, paging Ember Pallin to report to Director Maranya Valkonans office.*

Ember looked up at the ceiling and then around the cafeteria. The sabaac cards stopped their dancing and flew back to the table into a neat stack. He placed the cards in a pocket of the robe and smiled at the kids.

"I must go now younglings. You take care." he stood and walked out of the cafeteria.

His boot steps were heard down the hallways. He didn't ask for directions or look at any of the maps. He was following the energy of Maranya. It was a visible red trail among the other energy waves. He nodded to those close by, and stopped outside the office door. His metal hand gave the knocks a metallic tone.

He stepped back and waited for Maranya to answer.

Maranya looked toward the slightly ajar door when she heard the rhythmic taps of metal against solid wood. She quickly brushed the crumbs that remained from her lunch into her wastebasket, and dabbed at her melted cheese stained lips with a paper napkin. Crumpling the used napkin into a loose ball, she then tossed the napkin ball and the takeout container into the oval metal wastebasket with a pair of soft thunks.

"Come in!"

Ember Pallin

Ember pushed the door open softly as Maranya bade him to come in. He smiled to her and approached her desk. He stood by the chair a client would set at and remained politely standing.

"So glad to be able to see you today. I trust things are not too chaotic in the administrative department, Maranya. I hope you received a list of medical supplies I was allowed to salvage from a recent battleground. The items listed are what I have left over after Healer Fleet Wolf took what was needed. I hope I can offer some of them to you, free of course. They were after all, a compensation for the other more hazardous military hardware salvaged for the primary contractor."

He remained standing and waited for an answer. He looked out her office window to the sky.

"The stars are quite lovely when you get past the river of blue."

Maranya Valkonan

Maranya flashed Ember a friendly smile when he stepped inside her office. "Please, sit down, Ember. Da, I did receive the list of your very generous donations to Riverview." Her left index finger tapped the flatscreen display on her desk in emphasis. "Are you sure that Fleet took everything that he needed for his Clinic? Because if not, please, make sure that he gets what they need first. They're starting everything from ground level up, after all."

She settled back in her cordovan leather ergonomically designed chair, and steepled her hands together. Her fingertips tapped her lips in contemplation while she followed the spacer's line of sight. "Mm, I have heard that, da. I would not know, as I have never been anything but planet bound."

The river of blue. Oh, to swim in an ocean of stars. Perhaps someday...

Maranya felt the heat rise in her normally chilled cheeks from her blush. "But then, you already know that, of course."

Ember Pallin

Date: 2009-05-07 19:08 EST
He smiled and took a seat.

"Fleet Wolf has taken what he needs. He said he knows your clinic is in more desperate need of advanced equipment than his small clinic. He will be happy to take anything left over if you have no need of it."

He leaned back and gazed at Anya. He folded metal hands together and just smiled.

"Worried about all of the paper work, the lives, and the needs of this hospital? You need a small break. You're going to snap from strain. My shuttle the Addaptus, is sitting just outside your hospital. 30 minutes should be a long enough brake to help clear your mind."

Another smile as he waited to see what she would do and also see how her energy rose or fell.

Maranya Valkonan

Date: 2009-05-16 15:20 EST
Maranya turned her attention from the blue sky outside back to the red haired bearded man who sat on the other side of her desk.

"You understand things with m—here, all too well, Ember. It is pravilno that I worry about those who are outside the four walls of this office a great deal. I have had to take up that responsibility once again, and, frankly, my shoulders are tired of bearing the strain."

The internal debate to go or to stay could be easily read on her features only by someone highly trained in kinesics. She had so much to oversee at Riverview, even with Xenia's expert help. How could she possibly take time out for something as frivolous as a ride to see the stars when there were far, far too many people and lives that depended on her decisions?

That delicious tuna melt now lay like lumps of quick drying cement in the pit of Maranya's stomach. "So very tired," she whispered with regret, and turned her pain filled hazel eyed gaze back to the window filled with seemingly endless blue skies.

Ember Pallin

Date: 2009-05-17 18:51 EST
He heard her whisper. Maranya's energy also plummeted as if in defeat. Ember put metal fingers together in thought for a moment. Gray eyes just stared at Maranya and how she kept looking out the window at the sky.

"A Sith would use the Force to make you leave. A Jedi would try to gently impose on you to take a break for your well being. I am neither but both. I do understand you are the heart of Riverview Clinnic and will not try to remove your vitality from it. However, Maranya, you are overworked. I can offer you a shuttle ride after hours if you would like, when you're not in the middle of administrative responsibilities."

Ember paused for a few moments to let that sink in. "I had a vision you would be moving down the path of not taking my offer. So, I have another, personal gift to serve as a raincheck for when your ready to relax."

He pulled from his sleeveless cloak a small box, plain, no wrapping and set it on her desk.

"Inside you will find a holographic cube with real time feed of what the stars look like and even Rhydin itself from on high. It is linked to one of many cameras on the Bi-Duran, my actual ship. Next to it will be a simple communicator keyed to my personal line. When you're ready to soar, let me know."

He just smiled and nodded to her politely. "Now then, back to business. What would you like on this list, and when?"

Maranya Valkonan

Date: 2009-05-24 09:55 EST
Riverview's Chief of Staff pondered over the words she heard as she returned her gaze, shielded somewhat by her tortoiseshell framed reading glasses lenses, to the red haired man that sat on the opposite side of her desk. She picked up the box, and turned it around in her hands without opening it.

To see the stars, close enough to touch them....

"The chance to soar. You're giving me too precious a gift, Ember," she whispered finally.

Maranya set the box back down on her desk with care. Her lips then pursed in contemplation of the list which remained in electronic display on her flat panel monitor. "As—as for the rest, again, whatever Fleet does not need from the list, I will gladly accept on behalf of Riverview, whenever it is convenient for you to deliver them."

Her hands steepled once again, and her fingertips pressed against her lips, this time to stop the urge her lips had to tremble.

Ember Pallin

"Maranya, I give a precious gift to someone precious to this community. You are a treasure. You heal lives. Taking one who gives others the chance to see the sun and stars again and chance to be among the stars herself is but a small token I can offer."

He leaned back. "I do have on the Addaptus 2 of the Medical Droids and 2 cases of Universal Plasma. If you wish, you may come and inspect them, or I can bring them in."

He mirrored Maranya's steepled fingers with his own metal fingers. You cary so much on your shoulders Maranya. You would be wise to let others bear the load for a few moments of time to allow you to breath. Ember thought.

Sometimes the ability Maranya had to perceive the surface thoughts of those around her was comforting and quite pleasant, like when she "heard" how pleased Antonio had been with the dinner she made for his birthday before he formed the words to express his thoughts on the matter verbally.

At other times it was painful, as it was during the times when she paid vigil for a dying child and, while she held their hand, she was privy to the last, fearful impressions of a young mind before death mercifully brought an end to their suffering, and hers.

But this time, when she perceived Ember's thoughts, it was as if he had whispered them into her ear, instead of into her mind.

To go and inspect the items myself, or to stay, and let Ember bring them here. Decisions, decisions. So many decisions to make. Too many.

A wistful sigh escaped from between her lips while she pondered, weak and weary.

By the Beyond, I am tired, to the bone tired of making decisions. Perhaps some fresh air will clear my head. I am suffocating in here.

Maranya nodded decisively to Ember as she rose from her chair finally. "I will go inspect the items with you. I could use some fresh air."

She stepped out from behind her desk. Weariness colored her movements as she headed to the door, and waited for the spacer there.

Ember stood as well and opened the door for her. As Maranya would pass, a metal hand would barely touch her shoulder imparting a small token of soothing Force energy. That was all he would offer without asking her for permission. He was a balancer, a gray Jedi, one kept the scales balanced and tipped them when needed.

He walked with Maranya down the main hall from her office lightly describing what each medical droid was able to do, the long list of species it knew, and so on. Once again he held the glass entry door to the clinic open for her. Chivalry, was not a foreign concept to him.

300 ft away from Riverview clinic, to ensure no debris was kicked up by the landing jets, stood the Addaptus. The Lhambda class shuttle, once in it's life was Imperial gray. Now it was a dazzling white Yin, Yang symbols on the main Ventral fin, and the two dorsal fins that folded up to meet the ventral fin. A set of las cannons bristled from the nose, and two small recessed ports on the sides of the underbelly. The only sign that advanced concussion missiles were within.

Ember sent the Force out as they walked and the rear loading hatch could be heard opening. Sun glinted off the mirrored view ports in the hull and cockpit.

"Maranya, I present the Addaptus. Not much in spacing terms, but she gets the job done. The supplies are in the rear bay." He walked slowly towards the rear bay hatch, metal fingers gliding along the belly of the ship.

Today, perhaps more than ever, Maranya appreciated the gestures of gallantry that Ember showed toward her. That boost of energy to supplement her flagging reserves was even more appreciated, if a bit of a surprise when she felt it course through her system, which quickly and greedily absorbed it.

Her hazel eyes widened in undisguised delight at the sight of the shuttle. Then they glazed over a bit as the rogue part of her brain that had Aja often tease her as being "in geeker heaven" took over, analyzing details about the technology in front of her.

Finally, Maranya shook her head to dispel those contemplations, and returned her focus to the situation at hand. She followed Ember to the hatch, and once again waited.

Ember lead Maranya up the lowered ramp and into the small cargo bay. Two small pallets on antigrav sat to the left. They were stacked 6 boxes high, and 5 boxes long. 2 cases of universal plasma sat on top of them. He removed the cases and sat them on the decking for Maranya to inspect as he walked towards the right corner of the cargo bay and unlatched two tall, spindly looking robots festooned with arms. The arms were bare and would have the surgical implements attached to them after activation.

"Now then, the class E34X Medical Droid is unique. It can be charged and run for 3 days before needing 5 hours of charge time. Each droid comes with 15 appendages. Each one is specially outfitted giving the droid the full range of equipment found in any Emergency Room. The boxes on the two pallets are all of the equipment, supplies, and replacement power cells to keep these two droids running for 3 years. They will equip themselves once activated." His voice was soothing, somewhat technically edged, and a hint of pride.

Ember manually moved the droids to the entrance for inspection. "They have over 3,000 races stored in their internal CPU's. Any not found will be compared against the database for similarities and then adjusted for that race giving the E34X Medical Droid the function to learn. 2,000 more races can be stored as well."

He watched Maranya look over the plasma and then at the droids. He leaned against the cargo bay wall and just watched her. A mental sigh. I could easily will you to step in and enjoy the ride. Enjoy being a loose term for captive entertainment. But that is not who I am. I am a fried.

"Maranya, may I call you Anya? Also, now that you are here any second thoughts on an offer for a shuttle ride. 30 minutes is all that is needed. Call it stress rehabilitation therapy if you need to." he grinned wryly and scratched his red beard with his metal hand.

Maranya Valkonan

Maranya looked over the droids and the equipment. Her brain easily absorbed all the technical information about the items like a thirsty sponge did water.

All this is mine, for the Clinic. The patients that can be helped".

Her dark blond brow ticked upward as another series of thoughts brushed against her surface awareness of them. Then she shook her head to dispel them from consideration.

"Da, you may call me Anya, Ember. As much as your offer is tempting" and it is very very tempting? I will have to decline once again at this time." She backed down the entry ramp to the shuttle, and once again stood on terra firma. "I promise that one day soon I will take you up on your generous offer. But that day is not today."

Maranya watched Ember's kinesics carefully as she spoke again, "If this means that you will rescind your generous offer to fill the Clinic's equipment and supply needs, then so be it."

Ember Pallin

Date: 2009-06-30 22:36 EST
Ember's grin just broadened, an he clapped his metal hands together. "Well done Anya. You would make a fine Jedi with that will of yours. The medical equipment is yours by all rights. I am not a petty person to hold back valuable resources for a clinic in need."

He moved behind the anti grav lifters, coded them to follow him, and switched the Med droids to slave mode. He walked down the ramp with the supplies following him. "I will remember you have a raincheck for a shuttle ride. Forgive me for pressing. Now then, shall we go store your supplies?"

Maranya Valkonan

Date: 2009-07-01 06:30 EST
Maranya's brows briefly furrowed in confusion while she listened to Ember.

My strong will? By the Beyond, Ember doesn't know how close I came to giving in.

She shook her head with a faint smile. "You're forgiven, Ember. Of course. We can go around the back, and store these supplies in East wing storage. Follow me, please."

The Chief of Staff waited for the Jedi to follow her, before she headed toward the back of the main building.

Ember Pallin

Ember followed Anya around to the east wing with the supplies. He hoped he hadn't pushed to hard on her. His social graces were rusty being amongst the stars. The Clinic was a grand place, full of healing energy. One day he would love to help. For now though, he felt a lot a disturbing things through the Force yet to come.

He kept his face calm, but those gray eyes of his glinted like steel with the unsettling events that kept coming to his mind. He needed to get away from this place of piece soon or he would have innocent blood on his hands. Wars were coming, and he was in a few of them. He couldn't tell why, the future always a cloudy thing. Ember followed Anya with his periphery vision while he thought on this things.
