The article didn't come out as an above-the-fold headline, but it was still on the front page. There was a picture of the Clinic exterior, with its half-completed murals, looking somehow shabby in black and white. Next to it, the damning print was easy to read. Riverview Clinic - the Dark Side of RhyDin's Bright Star

Riverview Clinic. The solitary jewel in the pasteboard crown of RhyDin medical care. The bright star of hope, shining the promise of medical care to all across the city. With a reputation for excellence, the doctors and staff of the Clinic make modern medicine accessible to every citizen. It is, therefore, not surprising that the dark foundation which supports this shining structure is usually overlooked " and indeed, hidden.

Recently I toured this facility. What I learned was " to say the least " disturbing. From the moment you walk into Riverview Clinic, you are treated to a glittering fa"ade, high-tech conveniences such as a thoroughly modern paging system scattered here and there. Phyllia Hawkwood, the very efficient receptionist, intercepts visitors before they can wander on their own.

I was greeted and escorted through the tour by the Chief of Staff herself, who spared generous amounts of her time to personally show me around. Then again, the Chief of Staff is Dr. Maranya Valkonan, and with her suspended medical license, she has quite a bit more free time on her hands. Some of it seems to be spent in the exclusive boutiques of New Haven, as she was wearing a Koy Original. When I asked about the suspension, she informed me she was "advised by her barrister not to go into details of the case" but that the 'suspension " was unnecessarily punitive on the part of the plaintiff."

But who can blame the plaintiff, Mr. Gorlak, who suffered at the hands of her care, for wishing to keep her from inflicting what he sees as substandard medical treatment on anyone else? And in my opinion, it was just in time. Dr. Valkonan proudly informed me that she "personally delivered many of the babies that were born here in the month of December alone, last year." In addition, she also boasted of her primacy in the ER and in surgery. Perhaps by trying to be all things to all people she let some things slide"

Or perhaps she was trying to make up for the appalling shortage of actual Doctors at the Riverview Clinic. Over the last few months, no less than three doctors have joined and abandoned the Clinic in short order. Currently they boast one licensed surgeon on their staff " a drow, Dr. Savaris. I hope not to need surgery when he's off-shift! While their Department heads are in fact licensed, those departments are shells " the "Head of Department' title seems to be awarded because they are the only doctors of that specialty who continue to work at the Clinic.

With such a desperate manning shortage, it is no surprise that the support staff is wildly overworked. This makes it even more shameful when the Director of Administration " Mr. Ali al-Amat " adds to their burden with appalling demands. The IT section of the Riverview Clinic is just as completely modern and up-to-date as their reception area. Their computer security is, to this point, unbroken (or so I was informed by the good Dr. Valkonan).

And yet Mr. Amat still demanded not only that paper records be maintained (which some view as a sensible precaution) but recently ordered all those records to be pulled. He then spent inordinate amounts of time locked in his office with the records " and his lovely assistant, Lorelei " before returning all the records in massive disarray. Which of course meant yet more work for those poor souls laboring in the Accounting department. All to "test the efficiency of the bank in cycling deposits," according to one letter I was shown by an anonymous source.

But how much efficiency is demonstrated by requesting paper copies of transactions which are handled primarily via electronic means" Then again " perhaps an efficiency test wasn't what motivated Mr. Amat. The Riverview Clinic, supported by "private donations?, has been leaking money at an alarming rate. Based on the typical operating expenses for this type of clinic compared to the statements of donations filed with the tax office and their current statement of earnings for non-profits, the Riverview Clinic is short on the order of a quarter of a million gold.

And Dr. Maranya Valkonan wears Koy Originals.

Personally, if I need medical attention, the Riverview Clinic will be the last place I go, rather than the first.
