Maranya Valkonan

So many things have changed in the past three years, and more.

The Director of Riverview Clinic surveyed her kingdom from outside the large, sprawling antiquated structure. Appearances were deceiving, however, for inside the rough, handmade brick and mortar walls, the clinic hummed and thrummed with the electronic life-beat of an ultra-modern medical facility.

*And you're responsible for those changes, Maranya. You have every right to be proud.*

The statuesque dark blond woman in a white knee length labcoat paused at the top of the concrete steps. Her fingertips pressed against the bridge of her nose in a habitual gesture. But a smile bloomed on her lips, too.

"Da, Ben, I am. Even after all the headaches from fighting every step of the way to wrest control from that zasnarec Renger and his toadies" da, it was all worth it," she murmured aloud. The scuttlebutt that passed among certain members of the staff like a communicable disease around that time claimed that "Doctor Valkyrie" either slept with the former Director, or engaged in equally illicit activities in order to get the position. The after-effects of those rumors lingered for months after she took over the job.

Maranya's palm pressed against the heavy oak door to open it enough to allow her easy entry into the main reception area. After a brief check of her wrist chronometer, she quickened her long legged stride, and headed for the west wing. Within a few minutes after her arrival, a group of medical residents in thigh length white labcoats flocked around the area.

"Good morning, everyone. Before we go on rounds today, I wanted to inform you of a new addition to our staff. Her name is Star Runner, and she will be assisting us with our more critical cases. So, don't be surprised if you see what may look to you like a floating dolphin roaming our halls in the near future. Any questions before we begin?" Receiving no responses, she nodded with approval. "Excellent. Time to begin."

With a press of her palm against the door, Doctor Maranya Tatiana Valkonan entered the ward marked Recovery. The residents silently followed in her wake.

Star Runner

Star Runner floated about two feet off the ground, grav-harness humming slightly as she dipped her head to inspect another piece of the equipment laying on the floor. The small atrium was the perfect place to set up the Mobius transit pad, so after checking with Maranya, Star and a group of three technicians from the Ambrosia had wheeled in a large crate of equipment and started setting up.

There, the last data-link was in place, and now they only needed to connect the power supply, and the teleport device would be up and running. Giving a soft squee of satisfaciton, Star folded up the robotic arms on the back of her harness and 'swam' through the air to a safe distance. Looking to one of the techs, a male Taerren, Star let out a burst of whistles and clicks in Trinary language. The elf-like man nodded and started typing out control sequences on the holographic interface.

In the center of the atrium, a circular dias roughly half a foot tall sat. Towards the rear of this dias was a pillar, from which a series of rings began to close, almost like a ribcage, around the circumference of the platform. When the last ring closed fully around the platform, the inner surfaces of the rings began rotating in alternating directions, picking up speed as a low whine filled the air. Static energy crackled, and the air above the platform began to shimmer, distorting as if through a flawed lens. Finally as the whine rose in pitch and volume, the distortions tore a hole in the air, a subtle current of air pulled along into the rent.

Star watched as the Mobius bridge formed and the capacitors gave up their final load. A brief burst of red and white light, and something resembling an elevator cage 'dropped' through the hole and landed on the platform with a muffled thump. The hole in the air quickly closed with a final crackle, the rings slowed and finally stopped, and the 'ribs' of the machine retracted into the pillar at the back. "Well done! First transit test is complete. Thank you for your help Argus, Derrek. I'll see you back on the Ambrosia later tonight."

The two males nodded and waved back, climbing into the 'cage' on the platform and activating the transfer back to the Ambrosia in orbit. A mirror of the previous display, only this time the cage hovered above the platform and the 'hole' opened just below the cage. As the carriage 'fell' through the bridge, Star clicked to herself and turned in the air. 'Swimming' through the doors of the atrium, Star moved down the hallways of the clinic to find Maranya and introduce herself to the staff and patients of Riverview.

The bear waddled down the halls, adjusting the fit around the broad white coat. He patted some cursive hand-stitching over his right breast, reading "Snorlax, M.D." It was a little sung from when he had last put it on years ago, but that was only an extra 70 pounds or so since then. The coat would cope.

He squeezed himself through the Director's door, nodding to the lady with the big desk. Reaching into the folds of some hidden pockets, he placed a set of stapled papers on Dr. Valkonan's desk.
