As the sun began sinking towards the horizon, the Governor stepped into the little-used press room at Rhydin's Town Hall. Reporters, cameras and microphones from almost two dozen media outlets—radio and television, the Rhydin Post and other newspapers, and a fair number of blogs—were spread in clusters throughout the room. They exchanged gossip and stories as only media folk can manage. Then one of them spied Ebon approaching the podium, and soon all had taken their seats wearing expectant expressions.

After a brief moment collecting his thoughts, Ebon smiled and began. "Good evening, and thank you all for coming tonight. As has been well documented, this city has been awash under a swelling tide of chaos and violence. It started in Dockside with what appeared to be an unfortunate but relatively unremarkable apartment fire, and has grown into a wave of madness that has seen blazes strike up across the city, bombings, and murder." He paused a moment to consider his next words. "The worst of this activity has struck the Seaside district, allegedly under the urging and inspiration of the Baroness there."

"Now Rostol has been ousted, but the incoming Baron apparently wants to bring his own brand of insanity to the people of Seaside. This will not do."

A hushed murmuring spread through the assembled members of the press. "Until recently the Watch response has been focused on protecting the homes and businesses that have been hit the hardest, keeping them safe from looters and worse, and also doing their best to deter additional outbreaks of violence. In this they have been bolstered by troops from the Duchy of Navarra, graciously provided by Baroness Mairead Harker and her family."

One of the reporters rose to her feet. "Coco Walters, Rhydin 5 News. Is this build-up of troops a sign that Rhydin is moving towards martial law?"

Ebon managed to keep his face a mask of serenity, not giving any sign of his inner struggle to avoid smacking the woman. "You just love asking that, don't you, Coco' The answer is no, so please sit down. I'll take everyone's questions in a moment. Now....where was I?"

"Watch response?" replied a male voice from somewhere.

"Ah, yes!" Ebon replied with a gentle chuckle that was answered in kind across the room. His expression quickly sobered, however. "In the wake of all that has happened, and following the announcement this morning from Seaside's iminent new Baron, I would like to make one of my own."

"Noon tomorrow, Thursday the 19th, several squads of the Watch will take up positions within and throughout Seaside, joined by a detachment of Navarran troops and Batten Industries security forces, all under the direction of my chief of security, Katt Batten....herself, it should be noted, a resident of Seaside for about a year now. They will also be supported by Isuelt DeRomiano and the Sisters of Scathach, likewise based in Seaside."

"Their mission will be a simple one: to assist in maintaining order, and to prevent any unnecessary bloodshed. Simply put, the people of Seaside have had enough of this madness, they would like it to end, and I intend to help make that happen."

Glancing at his notes, Ebon nodded as if to himself. "Before I open the floor, I wanted to thank Baroness Jewel Ravenlock and Baron Kalamar Ar'Din for their offers of refuge to the citizens of Seaside left homeless and fearful in the aftermath of this violence. It warms my heart to see such charity. In similar spirit, the residents of Den City have offered relief supplies, and I have suggested that those be sent to the baronial shelters."

A heavy silence hung in the air as Ebon looked out. "Any questions?"

Looking more weary than usual, Governor Ilnaren stepped up to the podium and gazed out at the media. "Good morning, and thank you for coming. As you are, no doubt, all aware, early yesterday morning the Dockside district was shaken by a pair of explosions and a rapidly-escalated firefight that left casualties on both side, as well as innocents caught in the crossfire and general chaos." He managed a slight smile. "I will say that it does my heart good to witness the city's response in the wake of this unpleasantness. Response to the RhyDin Social Works Division's call for aid and volunteers has been outstanding, particularly from the rest of Dockside and from the Old Market district, which has also known more than its share of explosive chaos in the past. I encourage others to join those of us who have already given time and support to their fellow RhyDinites in need during this chill winter. Your press packets include the Watch/RSWD hotline and website, and I do ask that you include this information in your reports."

A grim look swept across Ebon's face as he went on. "Unfortunately, those released from captivity so far may only be that start. As I myself found while visiting the scene yesterday, there's a network of passages riddling the area, connecting to surface warehouses and subterranean chambers: holding pens for captives guarded by desperate cultists, rooms that housed unspeakable experiments....and a few unhinged monstrosities that we managed to put down."

A hand went up, and Ebon pointed with a nod. "Coco Walters, Channel 5 News. You mentioned monsters. Is there any chance that some of them escaped and pose a danger to the city?"

"Coco, this is RhyDin; monsters on their own are fairly run-of-the-mill. However," and here Ebon drew a sigh, "the passages I mentioned do lead down into RhyDin's undercity. I've instructed the Watch and Public Works to block off any entrances they find, but it is possible that some of the cultists or their creatures may have escaped." That same hand went up and he qlared. "No, Coco, we are not instituting martial law. Hush. Yes....Mr. Adeniji, from the Post."

"Governor, do you have any comment on reports that a Mr. Elitia Turner was responsible for the explosions?"

"The Watch is still investigating the incident and I will not risk hampering that investigation by commenting on unverified allegations. However, it is my understanding that Mr. Turner is certainly responsible for freeing many of the former captives, and I dare say that he has been instrumental in working with the Watch to investigate this cult." Ebon let a slow smile spread across his face. "So I do hope that such acts are weighed alongside any destruction wreaked during this incident when he is judged in public opinion."

A few more hands went up, and Ebon scanned them before choosing the tallest. "Diane Woll, KRDN Channel 7. Is it possible that the incident at the Docks was connected to the wave of chaos that swept the southern neighborhoods of RhyDin earlier this morning?"

"No, the explosions at the docks were, as previously reported, tied to an ongoing investigation. What happened last night appears to have been yet another round of hooliganism." Ebon shrugged, almost apologetically. "As Detective Stanley said in his comments, repairs and cleanup are underway."

"A follow-up question, Governor....you said that this was part of an ongoing investigation. How long has this cult been at work?"

Ebon paused for thought, one eyebrow gently arched as he considered how much or how little to reveal. "We believe that they are been in existence for at least two years, Diane, and that they are based on some tenet of priveleges for those who wield magic. I'm afraid that none of those who were captured or surrendered have been particularly forthcoming." He glanced to one side where Katt had entered, standing there like a Secret Service or CIA "suit" before she jerked her head, almost imperceptibly. "I'm afraid something has come up, so no more questions now. Please contact my office with further inquiries. Thank you for coming." Stepping away from the podium, he quickly joined her and they headed out.

Standing behind the podium she glanced at the papers in front of her. Eventually, she turned them over and looked up to the small crowd before her. She was dressed in black slacks and a jacket over a white blouse. Clean and simple as it were. Clearing her throat she looked at the unfamiliar faces of the press. This was...different.

"If I could have your attention please..."

She waited, ever patient, for the press to take their seats. This wasn't to be a question and answer. Not today...

"I would like to thank you all for coming today on such short notice. I must say I am surprised to be standing before you all as I am now. For many years I have worked behind the scenes for other governors and the city alike so I am not accustomed to the spotlight. Nor do I look to be in it..." Which really did leave a question in her mind why she became a candidate in the first place. Oh right - because she was asked to.

"I want to continue to extend my appreciation to all of those who helped make this election possible. The other candidates, the press, and those behind the scenes doing all the work. As well as to all of those that voted. Thank you for allowing me to be your voice.

With that being said I would like to go ahead and say that I will be continuing the monthly meetings - starting next month. Those with questions, suggestions, news, events, and general announcements, that they would like to share with the community are welcome to leave them at the office for me to review and prepare for.

Also, any who would like to apply for a seat on the council can leave their name and contact information at the office as well as their reason for wanting to be on the council. I will be reviewing each person individually and taking four into position.

Now I would like to turn to some of my agendas over the next few weeks:

Medical Outreach. I am wishing to put together a list of places that people can go for medical. Firstly, I would like the caregivers to reach out to me. I want to start keeping a list for the public of who keeps their doors open to everyone - no matter their race, gender, or what have you. I want to spread the word that people can go to get their wounds treated or get care without the concern of any hate towards them - for any reason. This list of places and names will go several places - including at the welcome center and any of the welcome leaflets and maps.

Self Defense Classes. Any schools or people who are willing to teach others to defend themselves, in the case it is needed, I would like you to step forward and give me your names so they too may be listed. These too will be listed for people to find.

Schooling and Private Education. There are a number of schools in Rhydin and I'd like them to be better known. I'd like to list the schools and what they have to offer so people are more informed.

I would also like those who want to be teacher or tutors in homes for those who are unable to make it to school grounds.

I'd also like any information towards grants, funding, or any who would like to fund learning for students who lack the means to pay."

She was pretty sure she had never spoke so much at once in her life. Taking a moment for herself she'd listen to the number of voices in the crowd speaking to one another before continuing.

"Before I leave I would like to thank Ebon for his service to the city for the past two years. His shoes will be hard to fill for sure.

With that said I shall take my leave. Thank you, again, for your time and I look forward to serving the city and her people." With that, she bowed her head and slipped from the stage.

She quietly watched as the news reported prepared everything for her to speak. The backdrop was simple - the city of Rhydin with Katt standing over a bridge that joined two streets, the trickling of the river lazing under was relaxing. It helped with the chaos that was in her head, even if it were for a short time. Her dress was simple and crisp, as it tended to be for such things. Really she'd rather be in a hoodie and jeans right now.

The cameraman was ready and the news reporter gave her a signal.

Three"

She inhaled slowly and released it through her barely parted lips.

Two"

No' that didn't help.

One"

She wasn't cut out for this.

Go"

Her eyes tilted up to the camera to address it calmly, as if not shaken by the thought of being under the watchful lens or eyes of those that may of been watching on the other side. "Good afternoon to those who my voice is reaching. I know times right now are hard but please"hear me out.

My words may be harsh...may very well be hard to hear...but I ask you? Please at least listen to what I have to say.

Since the election there has been uprises, people attacking others due to racial differences. I have seen the protesters. I have heard the reports of people being attacked and some even killed. I am not blind to the ongoings that have been going on...

However?" She paused briefly, trying to make sure she collected the words properly, "I want everyone who can hear my voice to stop and think what they are doing. Both parties, humans and non-humans, are doing the exact same thing without realizing simple things...

Rhydin has never been just humans or just non-humans. It came into being by both, joined together to create a place that all walks of life can mesh. A melting pot if you will" There has always been other races. Yes, I get that some of you don't like a race for one reason or another. I have dealt with racial hate myself. There will always be hate for one reason or another"

Which leads me to my second point"People will always find a reason to start mass hatred and there are those who even don't really care for you or your cause. They are just there because they feel it gives them a chance to inflict damage while in the guise of if being just. And then there are those who strike out because they are afraid but fail to realize that they are harming another and thus only adding fuel to the fire. There is a difference between going out to find trouble and defending yourself from harm. "

Her hands move slowly, clasping before her with fingers laced tight enough that her knuckles were going white. "To me it doesn't matter if you are human or non-human. Your race does not define who you are. What defines a person is their actions. If you kill someone just because they did nothing more than breath...that makes you a murderer. Human..Non-human..it doesn't matter.

You do not get to chose what race you are born into"

I was hoping Winterfest this year would be a good one but instead I see people protesting in front of businesses, getting in the way of daily lives of people who have done nothing to them. I have seen some shallow acts in the name of a so-called cause. So I am going to ask...what do you gain from this" Instead of being with your family and friends you'd rather spend your time, that you cannot get back, causing disruption for other people" To what end" How does that make you look" Not your race...but you as a person.

In closing I am going to ask something very simple of people and I know that it will go unheeded but I guess it doesn't hurt to ask...

It's the holidays, people...Go be with your family and friends.

As I see that not happening I am going to repeat what I have said before"

To those who want help....

If you are afraid there are places you can go for ease of mind and there are precautions you can take to protect yourself.

Protect yourself" again there is a difference between going out there and attacking someone and defending yourself. There are self defense classes opened and willing to take anyone who wishes to learn.

Don't go out alone. Always make sure you have friends with you.

If you do not like someone because of their race, or for whatever reason, go on your way. If they are doing absolutely nothing wrong to you then why go out of your way to make their life harder"

And as always my door is always open and my ear is always willing to listen.

With that said I bid you all a good afternoon and wish you all a happy, and safe, holiday season."

The reporter made a face as she gave the "cut' motion and Katt huffed out quietly. That...felt rather pointless. Truly she felt powerless in the scheme of things. As the reporter approached she smiled faintly. "Thank you for the use of your time and resources." was spoken quickly to cut off any questions she was sure was lingering on the lips of the reporter.

One she was sure was what Katt planned on doing if there was a backlash from her speaking out her opinion on the matter.

Truth be? She had no plan. She spoke honestly and what came of it..well..she suspected nothing would really come of it. Maybe a pile of complaints and hate letters but anything uplifting" Not likely.

It had been a few weeks since she had stood upon that platform. After being shot at the podium there was no chance that Kyle or Mike would allow her to stand there without the area being highly secured. While the Batten team was good at hiding themselves she could still spot a few of them in the crowd gathered.

She didn't feel antsy standing up there but probably looked as she felt. Tired....Haggard"Not even dressed as nicely as she was could that be hide that. Crisp black slacks and a simple blouse was her attire for the moment and she found herself constantly messing with the buttons at her sleeves. Just something..anything..for her hands to do.

However, once the camera was turned her way and the signals began she stopped fidgeting and clasped her hands on top of the podium.

Three" ...two" "..one...

Her eyes tilted to the camera seconds before her chin dipped. "Hello to those who my voice is reaching this morning?" There was a pause as she simply lost words. There was so much to say and she didn't know what she wanted to say at the same time. "I wish to start by apologizing to each and every one of you. I feel as if I have failed this city but not being able to do more in protecting the people. I do not mean humans nor do I mean the non-humans. I mean the people, as a whole.

The chaos that this hatred has caused is horrific. Homes and buildings can be rebuilt but what about the lives taken" Innocent lives disrupted, destroyed, and in some cases ended. I have witnessed death during this time and I will admit I am disappointed in myself for not being able to do more to help. I feel I have, indeed, failed.

But answer me this" What is it that you fear"

Non-humans fear the humans because they do not understand and lash out because they don't understand. Attacking them in their very homes for this reason alone.

Humans lash out because something is different, they do not understand, or because someone from one particular race has done something.

But really..why' Everyone is different in their own way. That is what makes us individuals. Our race does not make up who we are, as people...Humans have done some horrible acts but that does not mean all humans are bad. This does not make up a race but an individual or individuals.

Moving on"

The people of this Temple are not Mister Collins" people so if you are a follower of his please be aware of this. This..so called Temple has defiled and twisted the ideals of what I believe were Mister Collins's campaign. This hatred and chaos was not what their campaign was based on and if any had bothered to listen to their last broadcast you would of heard their plea for this to stop. Blinded by your hatred, fear, and egos, you have become puppets for this Temple and they are quite happy to prey and expand on those fears.

So please, let it go. We need to rebuild not only our city but our lives."

She exhaled slowly. "In time I am going to progress the people I had removed from the city, back to their homes, but I refuse to do this until I am sure this clusterfuck has ended.

With my closing statement I want to thank all of those who have gone and placed their lives on the line to protect this city and its people. Many good people were hurt and killed. I wish I could of done more for them or with them and this is again where I feel I have failed.

I hope those of you that had high hopes for me helping this city will forgive me for my shortcomings. I will strive to continue to do what I can and if you have questions, comments, or concerns please feel free to find me. Without a gun would be preferred.

Thank you for listening to my words this morning."

The crowd was went into an uproar with questions and she shook her head to them. "I will not be taking questions at this time. Please forgive and excuse me.? She moved off the platform but found Kyle at her side even before the last step had been taken. Apparently he was concerned with the slow way she was moving. She was still on the mend after all.

No words between the two were passed as he followed at her side toward Batten Tower.

Colleen stood on the courthouse steps as she had done the previous year with members of her family as supporters. The news report was carried over various types of media.

"Fellow citizens, as you know, Election Day will soon be upon us. I wish to make a few announcements as this term of office comes to a close." She shuffled through the papers in her hands. "I will not be seeking another term of office at this time and will be giving my support to my daughter, Rhiannon Brock Túr Gairdín. Rhi will have the family's support as I have. Most importantly, I know she will have the active support of her husband, my son by heart, Eregor." Colleen flashed a knowing smile at the camera. As the camera panned to Rhi and Gory, the matriarch's smile faded a touch as she remembered being surrounded by those she loved save one.

"I have enjoyed marrying people at the courthouse, giving them bragging rights of some sort. Listening to the day to day concerns that many of you have has shown me that I am not really cut out to be a politician or diplomat. I am, however, still committed to helping the citizens of Rhydin lead better lives. This experience has shown me that much can still be done. As my last official act as your Governor, I will be cutting ribbons and officially opening the Dockside Emergency Services and Medical Center as well as Sarengrave House over Citizens' Day weekend in September. I look forward to training midwives and doulas to assist patients at the new women's clinic. If you have questions for me or concerns to address, please stop by the office. I am still there between the hours of eight and three, save for a lunch break about noon time. I thank you for the support you have given me in the past year."

Giving her best beauty pageant wave and smile, Colleen MacLeod-Fenner went into the courthouse. There were still papers to sign and people needing someone to listen.

Hello, Darlings!

Stuff has happened. We survive. Anyone who has not survived, please report to one of the medical centers, there are unicorns, high tech mechanics, and other rezzers on call. Unless you are okay with being undead, we support fully all of our people's right to exist in any life state, or none.

But, as we go forth bravely, I do need a bit of direction and assistance for the matter of the Winter Festivities. Specifically: do we have a large dome sort of building? It's been years since I did a flyover of the city, and when I did, I was dropping bombs on an enemy giant god, so....Not a clue.

I'm thinking a nice moderne sort of building with good facilities and acoustics. Drop a line to me! Let's get this winter season ready to sizzle!

Your Humble Mayor, Pharlen VonTombs
