The heroine is a young Gypsy girl called Paquita. Unbeknownst to Paquita, she is really of noble birth, having been saved by Gypsies when her home village was massacred by Napoleon's troops. She saves the life of a young French officer, Lucien d'Hervilly, who is the target of a Spanish governor who desires to have him killed by I"igo, a gypsy chief. By way of a medallion, Paquita discovers that she is of noble birth, being in fact the cousin of Lucien. As such, she and Lucien are able to wed.

((OOC Note: Although this ballet was staged with regularity world-wide from the time it was first presented by the Moscow Imperial Ballet in 1846 until the 1920s, it has fallen out of style and was nearly forgotten. The Grand Pas Classique is still included in the repertoire of many theatres all over the world, however, including the Bolshoi Ballet.
