Synopsis

The "Shrew" is Katherina Minola, the eldest daughter of Baptista Minola, a lord in Padua. Katherina's temper is notorious and it is thought no man would ever wish to marry her. On the other hand, two men " Hortensio and Gremio " are eager to marry her younger sister Bianca. However, Baptista has sworn not to allow his younger daughter to marry before Katherina is wed, much to the despair of her suitors, who agree that they will work together to marry off Katherina so that they will be free to compete for Bianca.

The plot becomes more complex when Lucentio, who has recently come to Padua to attend university, sees Bianca and instantly falls in love with her. Lucentio overhears Baptista announce that he is on the lookout for tutors for his daughters, so he has his servant Tranio pretend to be him while he disguises himself as a Latin tutor named Cambio, so that he can woo Bianca behind Baptista's back.

In the meantime, Petruchio arrives in Padua. Petruchio tells his old friend Hortensio that he has set out to enjoy life after the death of his father and that his main goal is to wed. Hearing this, Hortensio seizes the opportunity to recruit Petruchio as a suitor for Katherina. He also has Petruchio present to Baptista a music tutor named Litio (Hortensio himself in disguise). Thus, Lucentio and Hortensio, pretending to be the teachers Cambio and Litio, attempt to woo Bianca unbeknownst to her father, and to one another.

Petruchio, to counter Katherina's shrewish nature, woos her with reverse psychology, pretending that every harsh thing she says or does is kind and gentle. Katherina allows herself to become engaged to Petruchio, and they are married in a farcical ceremony during which (amongst other things) he strikes the priest and drinks the communion wine, and then takes her home against her will. Once they are gone, Gremio and Tranio (disguised as Lucentio) formally bid for Bianca, with Tranio easily outbidding Gremio. However, in his zeal to win, he promises much more than the real Lucentio actually possesses, and Baptista determines that once Lucentio's father confirms the dowry, Bianca and Tranio can marry. Tranio thus decides that they will need someone to pretend to be Vincentio, Lucentio's father, at some point in the near future. Elsewhere, as part of their scheme, Tranio persuades Hortensio that Bianca is not worthy of his attentions, thus removing any problems he may cause.

Meanwhile, in Petruchio's house, he begins the "taming" of his new wife. She is refused food and clothing because nothing " according to Petruchio " is good enough for her; he claims perfectly cooked meat is overcooked, a beautiful dress doesn't fit right, and a stylish hat is not fashionable. He also sets about disagreeing with everything she says, and forcing her to agree with everything he says, no matter how absurd; on their way back to Padua to attend Bianca's wedding, she agrees with Petruchio that the sun is the moon, and proclaims that "if you please to call it a rush-candle,/Henceforth I vow it shall be so for me". Along the way, they meet Vincentio who is also on his way to Padua, and Katherina agrees with Petruchio when he declares that Vincentio is a woman and then apologises to Vincentio when Petruchio tells her he is a man.

Meanwhile, back in Padua, Lucentio and Tranio convince a passing pedant to pretend to be Vincentio and confirm the dowry for Bianca. The man does so, and Baptista is happy for Bianca to wed Lucentio (actually Tranio in disguise). Bianca then secretly elopes with the real Lucentio. However, Vincentio arrives in Padua, and encounters the Pedant, who claims to be Lucentio's father. Tranio (still disguised as Lucentio) appears, and the Pedant acknowledges him to be his son Lucentio. There is much confusion about identities, and the real Vincentio is set to be arrested when the real Lucentio appears with his newly betrothed Bianca, and reveals all to a bewildered Baptista and Vincentio. Lucentio explains everything that has happened and all is forgiven by the two fathers.

Meanwhile, Hortensio has married a rich widow, and so in the final scene of the play there are three newly married couples at Baptista's banquet; Bianca and Lucentio, the widow and Hortensio, and Katherina and Petruchio. Because of the general opinion that Petruchio is married to a shrew, a quarrel breaks out about whose wife is the most obedient. Petruchio proposes a wager whereby each will send a servant to call for their wives, and whichever comes most obediently will have won the wager for her husband. Katherina is the only one of the three who comes, winning the wager for Petruchio. At the end of the play, after the other two wives have been hauled into the room by Katherina, she gives a speech on the subject of why wives should always obey their husbands and the play ends with Baptista, Hortensio and Lucentio marvelling at how successfully Petruchio has tamed the shrew.

((As always, my lovelies, the thread is open for experiences, either on the stage or off. All I ask is that you respect the setting, and have fun!))

Baptista Minola: Gentlemen, content ye; I am resolv'd. Go in, Bianca. (Exit BIANCA) And for I know she taketh most delight In music, instruments, and poetry, Schoolmasters will I keep within my house Fit to instruct her youth. If you, Hortensio, Or, Signior Gremio, you, know any such, Prefer them hither; for to cunning men I will be very kind, and liberal To mine own children in good bringing-up; And so, farewell. Katherina, you may stay; For I have more to commune with Bianca. (Exit)

Kruger exited the stage, doubting any had quite performed Baptista in the way he had. The fighter, the smith was many things but definitely not Shakespearian trained. Quite certain that there wasn't an ear out there that had trouble hearing the words he spoke, Kruger had the grin on his face that so often he found when going to the ring. If there were complaints, it would come from make-up as he'd come in yet again bruised about the head. They should at least be pleased he'd iced down the swelling from the previous night's fights.

There were a few who'd purchased backstage access to the actors. Long term patrons to the theater unless was mistaken. They had no eyes for him, they followed around Corina and Jonathan and spoke of them in pleased if hushed tones. That isn't to say that Kruger had no one looking to him. Two children were back there as well, their parents part of the hangers on to the stars of the show. Kruger took a seat in the back looking to the stage manager who gave him a wink and a bit of a snicker as he passed by. The smith curled his finger at the two youths, calling them over to him. "Pretty boring eh?" The pair of them nodded at him, there wasn't much of a play place for them. "What are your names?"

"I'm Jenna, this is my brother Jeremy." Jenna's voice was soft but not shy, she at least knew to be quiet back stage. Kruger managed to wheedle their ages out of them, Jenna was ten and her brother was eight. He kept looking at Kruger strangely before asking if he were "The Kruger". This of course made Kruger grin even wider, Jeremy began to ask question after question of him about the matches he'd been in. This didn't seem to entertain Jenna any more than watching the show had.

To the observant in the audience they might have noticed a small change in Kruger's costume, when he entered for his next big scene. The first two fingers on his left hand had the nails painted blue. Behind the curtain Jenna now stood watching a bottle of nail polish gripped in her hands. She practiced the application on her own nails as she waited for Baptista to exit once again.

Baptista Minola: Well, gentlemen, I am thus resolv'd: on Sunday next you know My daughter Katherine is to be married; Now, on the Sunday following shall Bianca Be bride to you, if you make this assurance; If not, to Signior Gremio. And so I take my leave, and thank you both. Gremio: Adieu, good neighbour. (Exit BAPTISTA) Now, I fear thee not. Kruger slipped behind the curtain again, his miniature entourage falling in behind him as he took up that chair again. Jenna was quick to grab up his hand once again having nearly perfected her brush strokes on her own fingers. Jeremy was all questions again, wanting to know who hit the hardest out of all his opponents. Kruger was more than happy to answer any and every question.

This process repeated itself with every exit from the stage, those same observant folks that spotted his strangely polished nails may even have noticed that they changed colors three times. Jenna had in fact painted his left hand blue and his right hand green at one point. Were there chuckles from the audience" Perhaps, and it was just as likely they were looking to see what else changed on Baptista from one scene to another.

Kruger delivered his lines like he craved the attention, for him it was no different than stepping into a ring and playing to a crowd. He knew how to do that and it didn't matter if the role were funny or serious. He would be what they needed him to be. At no point would he draw attention to the ever changing colors on his hands, neither would he blush at having the lacquer so obviously applied.

Baptista Minola: But do you hear, sir" Have you married my daughter without asking my good will"

Vincentio: Fear not, Baptista; we will content you, go to; but I will in to be revenged for this villainy. (Exit)

Baptista Minola: And I to sound the depth of this knavery. (Exit ) The end, at least it was for Kruger. What was left, an appearance at the end to applause" So that part appealed to him, in fact if he could coax a few whistles out of them he'd be even happier. It seemed a pity he couldn't go out and give one of those poses that he loved so much. The grin was still there, and if the cheers weren't quite what he hoped for in the audience, there were two right behind the curtain that were giving him enough attention that the grin glued itself to his face.

The after event would have him answering for his constantly changing costume. He wouldn't remove the polish, Jenna had worked hard on it. He wore it proudly, happily telling the story to any who would enquire. He stood back from Corina and Jonathan letting them soak up the limelight. This was their night after all, Kruger was just a supporting part. There had only been one request for him to sign a program, Jeremy folded it as carefully as an eight year old could before shoving it in a pocket and beaming at him. Kruger was more than satisfied, latched to their parents hands, he waved goodbye to them as they slipped out the door.
